Embrace the Cross? by Joseph Earl

Embrace the Cross?

How does one embrace a cross

Without splinters received?

Surely did our Lord embrace

one such, though already grieved.

Why is it I expect at least

A planed and padded cross to bear,

Full polished and of fashion late.

And mirth of friends to banish care?

Is not this paved and level road

The one that leads to sweeter bliss?

A thorny crownmy brow adorn?

Am I to face a Judas' kiss?

May, surely not as to my friends

I say again, "This balsa cross I'll bear.

No hellish hill shall I ascend.

No blood shall mar the robe I wear."
