Mair Pointon of Baraboo, Wisconsin, volunteered to serve in the 6th Wisconsin Infantry on May 10, 1861, as the Civil War unfolded. He served during the major battles of the war, receiving special dispatch assignments during the Battles of Antietam and Gettysburg. Throughout his letters home to his brother, he shares both the difficulty of battle and the times of humanity where communication passed easily between Union and Confederate soldiers.
