Blazer Chronicles The Douglas Elementary Newspaper Walk-a-thon and Homecoming week

by Eleanor Nelson and Stella Schippa Fans of the Saugatuck high school football team are having a bad weekend after a crushing loss to the Galesburg-Augusta. The upsetting score was 54-0 at the end of the game.

After the game ( which resulted in many injuries on both sides of the field) the coaches decided to cancel the last two games of the season, but the team is trying to find a junior varsity team that is willing to play are very own Saugutuck Trialblazers.

Let's wish them luck and hope that this game was not the last.

Walk-A-Thon

Just one day earlier the Saugatuck Walkathon raised over 65,000 dollars and got donations from 33 states as well as the UK and Australia. At the walkathon celebration a dunk tank was placed to the right of the home bleachers, where several teachers and staff members were dunked into frigid water. As tradition, it was 50 degrees fahrenheit and it was raining/snowing outside.

Does anyone remember a time when the walkathon wasn't cold and rainy? In addition to the dunk tank there were raffles, games and an unplanned football game was played by DES students on the field.

The parade ran by DES students and staff members went around downtown douglas and back to the school where pie in the face took place. 15 teachers volunteered to be pied in the face! To the kids this was an amazing experience.

Book Reviews by Joey Bullinger and Stella Schippa If you are looking for an action-packed fantasy book, I recommend Bravelands by Erin hunter, author of the Warriors series. Bravelands is a series of 7 books starting with Broken Pride. The story consists of 3 main characters who live in a grassland they call bravelands. This story has different languages, customs, and more.

In the book, a lion cub loses his father to an evil lion. The cub ends up in a nest, and is rescued by a baboon. Another baboon uncovers a treacherous act, and an elephant goes on a quest. Read more to see what happens in Bravelands: Broken Pride.

If you are looking for a fantasy/ Sci-fi book I recommend Keeper of the Lost Cities, by Shannon Messenger. In the keeper of the lost cities series there are seven books soon to be an eighth.

Keeper of the lost cities is a book about a girl who realizes that she is from another dimension! Read about how Sophie learns about a secret society and something called “Project Moonlark’ Read to find out more!

The Origins of Halloween

by Sai Parrish BACK ON HALLOWEEN A LOOOOOOONG TIME AGO IN ENGLAND PEOPLE CARVED BEETROOTS AND POTATOES TO SCARE AWAY THE DEAD.

The original tradition of Halloween starts with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain.What is Samhain you say? First of all, the word Samhain is pronounced SAH-win, second Samhain is a religion that comes from an ancient Celtic spiritual tradition.In current times, Samhain is usually celebrated from October 31 to November 1 to welcome in the harvest and usher in “the dark half of the year.” People who celebrate this holiday believe that the barriers between the physical world and the spirit world break down during Samhain, this allows more interaction between humans and spirits from the Otherworld.

Materials Needed:

• 3% hydrogen peroxide solution • 20-ounce bottle (Plastic is Ideal) • Dish soap • Active yeast • Lukewarm water (MUST be lukewarm.)

• Food coloring (Optional, makes the foam look cool.)

• Parent/guardian supervision • A space that will be fine to get wet foam everywhere

Why does this work?

Mad Science with Joey Bullinger How to Make Elephant Toothpaste 1. Pour a ½ cup of hydrogen peroxide,¼ cup dish soap, and your choice of food coloring into your bottle. Shake the bottle to mix the ingredients.

Do this in your clean space.

I would recommend putting a towel underneath the bottle, which you will see help a lot.

2. In a different bottle, mix your yeast with lukewarm water.

Make sure the water is not too cold (Not reactive) and not too hot (Kills the yeast).

Wait about five minutes before going to the next step. (During those 5 minutes, you can get ready for step 3)

3. When you are ready to do the project, pour the ingredients you just mixed into your bottle that you want to use for the “Explosion” . The reaction should happen right after you add the yeast mixture to the bottle. Sit back and enjoy! Tell your friends, (Or me) if you liked this experiment or what you want to change.

Hydrogen peroxide is a liquid that easily changes into water and oxygen. In this experiment, yeast makes the change faster.

Yeast needs warm water to reproduce, so the project won't work as well if you use cold water (no reaction) or very hot water ( kills the yeast). The Dish soap traps the oxygen that was let out, making foam. Food coloring can color the film of the bubbles so you get colored foam. The elephant toothpaste project is exothermic, (so heat is produced.)This makes the solution warmer, just not hot enough to cause burns.

Animal Care Horses by Adeline Pardo The first thing to do is to make sure your horse is fed. I feed my horse two flakes of hay so that way my horse's stomach doesn't hurt. When your horse eats too much of the wrong hay your horse can get very sick. If your horse is being good, you can give it a treat like a carrot or a mint. If you don't have either of those things bring your horse outside to eat some grass.The second thing is to make sure your horse gets enough attention. Horses love attention and I have a few ways you can give a horse attention such as brushing and braiding their main and tail. There is a type of order I have to brush my horse in. Some of the brushes you may need to use on your horse are: a hard brush, soft brush, curing comb, and the hoof pick. If you didn't know this, I should tell you now. Make sure you don't pick your horse's right in the middle of his/her hoof.The middle of the horse's hoof is called the frog. The frog is the same thing as your fingernail. When you accidentily cut your nail too deep it will hurt just like how it would feel for a horse. That's all you need to know about Horses.

Games to Play recommended by Orson Church and Hollis Brown Video/Computer recommendation The number 1 computer game is drift boss! It is a simple game where you steer a car along a floating track. If you fall off, you die! There are coins along the track.

Get exactly in the middle to get them. You can use them to buy cars, (the higher the cost, the better the grip) car insurance, (extra life) double score, and coin rush (more coins) there is a daily gift, and every once and a while you get to spin a prize wheel. That's all about the drift boss!

Board Game recommendation The number 1 board games is Chess is the most famous board game according to search engine GOOGLE. It is a very old timey game but it is still very popular. It is a game where you start with pieces in a certain order.

You only get one move every turn, so choose wisely! Each piece has certain moves that you can only use with that piece. If you can move on top of the other player's piece, that piece is out of the game. If a pawn reaches the other side, you turn it into either a queen, knight, rook or bishop. Note: they have to be dead. Trap the king to win the game!

Card Game recommendation Our number 1 card game is, of course, Exploding Kittens! This game is very odd. It has special cards such as: cats barfing rainbows, defuses, and a crustacean version of Abraham Lincoln.Each card has a special power. If you draw an exploding kitten, you die. It is a ton of fun and if you need a card game that will bring lots of laughter this is the game for you!
