Different types of steel reinforcement bars used in construction

As technology began its spree of great advancements in the construction domain, the materials used in the construction became one of the barometers of the building’s quality, durability, and strength. And when we talk about construction, how could the mention of reinforcement bars be left out? As these bars are deployed to provide the necessary (and enhance) tensile strength of the concrete. So, when the concrete bears the tension, the unbreakability and resistance are due to the reinforcement bars.

Types of steel reinforcement bars – including deformed steel bars

Thermo Mechanically Treated Steel Bars

TMT steel bars are undoubtedly the most commonly deployed bars in today’s construction arena. This bar has a lot of advantageous factors and properties that make it stand out from the rest.

Features – uncomplex assembling, anti-corrosive, earthquake resistant

Mild Steel Plain Bars

These are rather simpler with round-shaped (and no ribbed) structures. So, for projects that do not need high steel strength, the mild steel plain bars are used – typically in RCC for slabs or beams.

Features – not ideal for big projects, up to 40000 psi tensile strength, not good bonding with the concrete

Prestressing Steel Bars

The structure of the prestressing steel bars is quite distinctive from others as it comprises multiple wires – a strand may have anything between 2 to 7 wires.

Features – strand’s tensile strength: 250000 to 270000 psi, highly flexible, structured with wires

Hot Rolled Deformed Steel Bars

The best part about the hot rolled deformed steel bars is that they can be used in any sort of project construction as they have great tensile strength. Generally, these serve the RCC structures.

Features – up to 60000 psi tensile strength, used in RCC, good bond with the concrete
