Your generosity has made a meaningful impact on my education and university experience.
I’d like to share a little about myself. Although I go by my English name, Eileen, my birth name is Minyu. I was born in Seoul, Korea and moved to Vancouver when I was five. Growing up, I helped my parents run their small café in West Vancouver, which sparked my passion for business, and instilled in me the values of hard work and perseverance. This foundation led me to pursue my studies at UBC Sauder.
As a first-generation immigrant, financial challenges often made it difficult to participate in extracurricular activities. To support myself, I worked part-time throughout high school, balancing academics and other commitments. Because of that, the bursaries I was lucky enough to receive have allowed me to focus more fully on my studies and continue engaging in meaningful opportunities at the university.
I am currently specializing in finance and have been actively involved in various programs, including UBC Sauder JDC West and the UBC Sauder Women in Finance Training (SWIFT) program. These experiences have helped me develop practical skills and explore different career paths. This year, I am excited to give back by leading workshops through the SWIFT program, empowering other young women to pursue careers in finance.
This summer, I have worked in Toronto and will be heading to Barcelona on exchange in the upcoming semester. I look forward to broadening my perspective, experiencing new cultures and stepping outside my comfort zone — all this would not have been possible without the support of donors. The kindness and support of donors have truly inspired me to make the most of my university experience and give back to others along the way.
A ‘vote of confidence’ scholarship turned the dream of a Toronto internship into reality

It was an honour and meaningful vote of confidence to receive the UBC Sauder School of Business Scholarship.
While it certainly validated my late-night study sessions, the award also provided crucial funding to realize my summer career plans: a Marketing Internship in Toronto with American Express Canada.
The financial leverage was a game-changer. Coming from a low-income household, it allowed me to afford cross-country relocation.
Beyond the balance sheet, this award was a powerful motivator. It was a signal that hard work at UBC Sauder is recognized and valued, making me feel immensely proud to be backed by a community committed to supporting its students unequivocally.
This award has not just eased my path; it has fundamentally strengthened my bond with our school. As a future alumnus, I am already planning how to pay this incredible investment forward. Thank you for believing in me, and for making me proud to be a UBC Sauder student.
