Back in our Soulard living days (when Ninth Street Deli was actually on Ninth Street), The Nine was our go-to hangover meal 100% of the time, but it’s a truly great sandwich any day, any time. You can order it with shredded beef or chicken (we prefer the chicken), and its gooey pepper jack cheese lends a hint of spice, while oregano adds a verdant, herbal flair. Caramelized onions provide notes of sweet richness, and the mildly tangy green garlic aioli ensures nary a dry bite, plus there’s lettuce and tomato for extra freshness. It’s all enveloped by hearty seeded French bread with a crispy exterior and perfectly chewy interior.

Be sure to order a side of chips to add some crunch to every bite. Ninth Street Deli opened on Ninth Street in Soulard in 2007, then moved to the old Howard’s location a few blocks away in 2018.

Owner John Been Jr. credits his longtime cooks Brian Bonds and Gerardo Ambrosio, who have both been with the business for over a decade, as having a large part in the restaurant’s success.

MARCONI MERCATO If you think the Hill doesn’t need another Italian restaurant, think again because Marconi Mercato recently joined the throng and we’re totally here for it. The front of the new business is a market full of pasta, fun Italian drinks, meat from Kenrick’s, ready-to-eat meals and more. In the back, there’s a full-service restaurant complete with a bar. The whole experience was delightful. The bianca focaccia was perhaps the softest bread we’ve ever had — almost cakelike in texture and served alongside a creamy basil butter and generously topped with shaved Parmigiano Reggiano. The bibb lettuce salad was another hit with radicchio, red onion, shaved fennel, radish and provolone, dressed with blood orange vinaigrette and topped with pistachio crumbs. The wagyu sliders served on pretzel buns were juicy and flavorful thanks to basil aioli, onion jam and caciocavera cheese. For the entree, the tagliatelle Bolognese is a rich and hearty crowd-pleaser. On the cocktail list, we enjoyed the Brezza Floreale, a fruity sipper with notes of elderflower, and the coffee-forward Cafe Napoli, which was somehow reminiscent of root beer.

PAVILION Nick Bognar’s latest venture takes place behind Sado, his new(ish) restaurant on the Hill. It’s an 18-course, Thai-inspired omakase experience in an intimate, custombuilt wood and glass-enclosed pavilion in the back of the Sado property.

Here, Bognar combines his skills in Japanese, Thai and Southeast Asian cuisine and features his extensive dry-aged fish program, taking you on a journey through different types of nigiri and much more. Seating is extremely limited and reservations get snapped up almost immediately once released, so keep an eye on Pavilion’s social media for updates and your chance to try this unique experience.

From the team behind Fratelli Ristorante, Sauci Pasta is St. Charles’ new fast-casual Italian restaurant that’s absolutely worth a visit. You can build your own bowl, but we wanted to try the composed dishes like the deconstructed lasagna and pesto primavera, both of which were quite tasty. The meatballs were our favorite protein, but the chicken that can be added to the pasta was also juicy and tender. All the pasta dishes are available in regular or small sizes, so you can order the smaller portions and try more dishes — what a dream. While there’s not technically a kids' menu, an order of the canestri served with their delicious white sauce appears enough like mac and cheese to please any young child and tastes even better than the old standby. We totally fumbled and forgot to order one of their salads, but you can bet we’ll be trying one on the next visit.

Matt and Jess Longueville, the dynamic duo behind STL Barkeep, are bringing their signature approach to hospitality to Webster Groves with the opening of Off Elm in late 2024. This new cocktail bar is the second brick-and-mortar venture for the pair, following the success of The Vandy just outside the Grove in Forest Park Southeast.

Off Elm blends sophistication with approachability, offering guests a cozy yet refined space to unwind. Designed

by Brian Leenig, the interior combines the charm of Webster Groves with midcentury modern influences, featuring

seating for 16 at the bar, 20 at low-top tables, and an additional 16 at two communal tables in the near future.

The result is an intimate yet inviting environment perfect for connecting with friends or enjoying a quality drink by yourself.

Beverage director Pat Gioia, who brings years of expertise from his time at The Block and The Vandy, has curated a menu of classic and specialty cocktails crafted with premium ingredients. From timeless favorites to innovative seasonal creations, every drink is meticulously prepared to delight cocktail enthusiasts

and casual sippers alike.

The food menu, designed to pair seamlessly with the bar’s offerings, leans into top-quality seafood, with highlights like tinned fish, creamy dips, charcuterie boards and other seasonal small bites.

The menu is intentionally crafted to elevate the cocktail experience, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

“As our company grows, we are excited to expand into Webster Groves,” said Matt Longueville. “We are excited to be in the neighborhood. Everyone has been very welcoming.”

Off Elm is poised to become a neighborhood favorite for pre- and post-dinner drinks, offering an upscale yet relaxed vibe that feels right at home in Webster Groves. ften loaded with charm

and lined with historic buildings that have been repurposed into boutiques, bars and restaurants, there’s something about a small-town main street that has an undeniable appeal. A short 30-minute drive south on I-55 to the twin cities of Festus and Crystal City will take you to a thriving Main Street that offers plenty of charm, along with a craft brewery, coffee shops, a number of restaurants and local retail shops.

Although the Festus business district is a bustling area now, it wasn’t always.

Mattingly owns Daily Flavors Eatery & Juice Bar, a gluten-free restaurant located at 34 E. Main St. in Festus. “Main Street has really grown into a place that people love to come to. We have people that drive over an hour to visit us because we’re a one-of-akind restaurant,” she said.

Though buzzing with life now, not that long ago, only a handful of businesses were on Main Street, such as staples like Pogolino’s Pizza and More, a family-owned eatery that has been a part of the community for over 50 years and is still thriving. Even though there were some restaurants in the area, there wasn’t much else happening to keep

people lingering on Main Street.

Over the past several years all that has changed, with businesses opening along Main Street bringing more options for dining and shopping, drawing the local community as well as people from far outside of the Festus area.

Looking back on the growth, there are some things that served as a sort of tipping point in the business district. One of those instances started in 2012, when Festus native Denny Foster, along with his father, Barry, began renovating a building located at 240 E. Main St., with the goal of opening a brewery in the space. It took three years to complete the renovations of the historic building that dates back to the 1800s, but once they opened Main & Mill Brewing, the father and son brought not only craft beer

“There were bars and nightlife, but it wasn’t really a place to come to,” Ashlee Mattingly recalled of the area prior to its current revitalization.

The Corner Cup

“We felt if we spent our time and money investing in the community and creating something a lot of places don’t have, that people would support it,” Denny Foster explained.

Although it has taken a while to get to this point, the journey has been well worth it to Foster when he reflects on the way he’s seen business owners as well as the community at large take pride in the local area.

In addition to his involvement as a business owner, Foster is also a part of

the Festus Main Street Association, a nonprofit that aims to revitalize Festus and Crystal City’s historic downtown through business development as well as annual events like the Tanglefoot Art Walk, Stocking Stroll and Ladies’ Night Out. When it comes to the current businesses on Main, the dining options include not only Pogolino’s, Daily Flavors and Main & Mill, but The Corner Cup, a micro-bakery and coffee shop, The Brick Bistro & Brew, a pizza and bistro style eatery, Pedal ’n Pi, a bike shop and pizza joint and The Braided Bakery, to name a few. Retail and entertainment options range from a live entertainment

venue to a variety of specialty boutiques, resale shops and salons.

“We felt like putting more things on Main would increase foot traffic and hopefully make it where people could start on one side of the street and work their way down the other side,” Foster said of the street’s development.

The community growth doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Next up for Foster is a new concept in the home of an old car dealership, located at 10 E. Main St. It will house a taproom, called Central, which will focus on beer, cold brew coffee, seltzers, ferments such as kombuchas, as well as sodas, all of

which will be made in-house.

“We’re really pushing the envelope on beverages as a whole,” Foster said of the forthcoming concept.

But Central won’t be the only concept inside the old car dealership. There are plans to include a carryout restaurant, which Foster said doesn’t have a name yet, as well as a cocktail bar called Six and an event space at the back of the building.

We checked out Swade Cannabis’ infused happy hour

The mocktails – essentially NA versions of drinks on the cocktail menu – were infused with about 5 milligrams of THC per drink using a flavorless powder called Stirribles. The Spaghetti Western was made with a tropical

peppercorn hydrosol, tomato and cucumber cordial, pasta water brine and lime juice, while the Acknowledge the Corn had pine needle and citrus hydrosol, corn and corn cob cordial, lemon juice and hickory-smoked salt. The flavor profiles were vegetal and verdant but still plenty fruity and sweet, although a bit viscous, perhaps due to the lack of liquor.

On the food side, there were grilled white fish skewers, pork belly nachos (my personal favorite of the evening), a mini spicy chicken sandwich, a salmon burger and beef fat fries that were served with ranch infused with about 2.5 milligrams of THC. Between the drinks and the ranch, my total consumption for the event was perfect, coming in at just over 10 milligrams. The evening was spent

merrymaking and giggling with a light buzz but no over-intoxication.

For years, we’ve been asking Lazy Tiger co-owner Tim Wiggins (one of our favorite mixologists in town) when he was going to start doing cannabis-infused beverages, and it felt full-circle to finally have an answer. Cannabis-infused food and drinks are not legal to be served at the same time as alcohol in Missouri, but Lazy Tiger and its adjacent sister restaurant Yellowbelly are worth a visit any day, and we’ll definitely be on the lookout for their inclusion in another Swade collaboration.

Swade intends to keep the Best Buds series going, so keep an eye on their social media for updates.

Swade Cannabis launched the Best Buds series at multiple restaurants last year around 4/20 as a way for St. Louisans to celebrate culinary cannabis culture. The dispensary brought it back in January for “Happier Hour” events at Lazy Tiger and Press. We went to Lazy Tiger to check out the ticketed event and had a wonderful experience. It’s so nice to be able to go out and have a nice meal and beverages, catch a light buzz, and wake up feeling perfectly refreshed in the morning.

The business was purchased by the Hendel family in 1915 and operated as a specialty grocery store and butcher shop until August 1993 when Henry and Marge Hendel retired. The establishment was purchased by Florissant resident Ed Bennett who opened Hendel’s Restaurant in November 1994.

wife Christina. Given the place it has in Florissant’s history, and that the establishment is a family-owned and -operated restaurant, the vibe at Hendel’s can be described as welcoming and homey.

“I always say our tagline is there’s no place like home, and a lot of people feel like they’re having dinner at our home,” Christina Bennett said of the restaurant.

That homey atmosphere is attributed to the cozy, warm and inviting details found throughout the space. A few of those

elements include artwork on the walls, a fireplace in the bar room and original details in the building that have retained their antiquated beauty, such as the hardwood flooring and windows. Keeping the history of the space has always been important to the Bennett family, and even though they’ve added on to the structure over the years, the additions have remained in line with the age of the building so that they add to the structure’s charm.

Those additions include the expansion of the front porch space in 2003. The porch

is covered and features heaters to keep guests extra cozy in the space, since it is used as a sunroom-style dining area from October through May. Six years after the porch expansion, the establishment gained its bar room, which features the wood bar counter and shelving, exposed brick and a collection of high-top tables.

Guests can also sit in the main dining area of the establishment, as well as the outdoor patio. Keeping with the theme of making guests feel as though they’re visiting a friend’s house, with its plants saucemagazine.com I SAUCE MAGAZINE I 41

and pond feature, the outdoor patio offers an inviting, homey atmosphere when dining al fresco at the restaurant.

In addition to the inviting aesthetic, Hendel’s is known for its selection of comfort food and stellar cocktails. Bennett said some of the most popular dishes include the Cajun carbonara, which features shrimp, Andouille sausage, tomatoes and scallions in a Cajun cream sauce served over linguine. Another favorite is the salmon with a teriyaki glaze, served with a rice pilaf and vegetables, along with the 8-ounce filet mignon, which comes with

a guest’s choice of starch, such as mashed potatoes and a vegetable selection.

More casual fare on the menu includes salads, such as the Parmesan-encrusted chicken Caesar salad, burgers, like the Jameson that comes with blue cheese, bacon, a Jameson whiskey glaze, and crispy onions on a brioche bun and chicken salad served on a croissant. In addition to its regular menu, the eatery also offers special, reservation-only, fivecourse dinners to celebrate Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve.

The drink menu is developed by bartender Mike Powers, who has been a part of the Hendel’s team for 17 years. “Everybody that comes in regularly knows that Mike’s going to make them a fancy, great cocktail,” Bennett said.

With a cocktail program that focuses on newer takes on classics, while also embracing seasonal offerings, guests can find everything from fruit-based to botanical-infused drinks. Some of the house specialties include Hendel’s Sangria, made with Deep Eddy Peach Vodka, elderflower liqueur, Moscato, Sprite, club soda and fruit.

Other selections include the Perfect Maple Manhattan, which combines 1792 Small Batch Bourbon, sweet vermouth, dry vermouth and Angostura bitters with maple syrup and dark cherries to give the drink a sweet balance. There’s also a selection of wines, bottled and canned beers and a rotating draft offering, plus non-alcoholic choices such as ginger beer and kombucha, as well as several soft drinks.
