Hospitals Transformation Programme (HTP)

Improving the way we deliver hospital care across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin, and mid Wales has been talked about for many years.

Local clinicians (doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals) and other specialists and local healthcare partners developed the proposed new way of delivering care with advice and guidance from regional and national teams and hospitals who have made similar, successful changes.

Plans to transform our acute hospital services through the Hospitals Transformation Programme received final national approval in May this year.

We are beginning construction work at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, which will enable us to deliver high quality healthcare through modern, purpose-built facilities.

About the Hospitals Transformation Programme The Hospitals Transformation Programme (HTP) plans to transform acute hospital services for communities across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and mid Wales. To achieve this, it is vital that we invest and upgrade our facilities to support modern healthcare practices.

The clinical model for these improvements was agreed upon following the Future Fit consultation in 2018, which explored issues and solutions across the Trust.

This new model of care was designed, led and supported by clinicians and will see patients benefit from fewer cancellations and delays for planned procedures.

The plans will deliver two thriving sites: the Trust will continue to develop services and invest at both the Telford and Shrewsbury sites, working closely with staff, local communities, and other stakeholders to deliver the most value.

Our plans for the Princess Royal Hospital A significant multi-million pound investment is already underway at the PRH in Telford to build the surgical centre to provide future planned surgical care.

The HTP plans will see PRH become the site specialising in planned care.

Princess Royal Hospital, Telford (PRH) and Hollinswood House, Telford Surgical Hub, PRH - Work has been completed on our £24million Planned Care Hub at PRH. This purpose-built facility consists of four theatres and a dedicated recovery area for elective care.

The hub enables the Trust to deliver day case operations all year round, which means: • Patients will face fewer delays for treatment, improving outcomes • We are not likely to postpone procedures due to winter and bed pressures The hub is a key part of our long-term plans to deliver improvements in care for the population and create two thriving hospitals.

Outpatients, PRH - The majority of visits to our hospitals are for outpatient appointments, which are unchanged for both children and adults at the PRH. Patients will also benefit from a new cancer treatment day centre, which will enhance the quality, capacity and efficiency of cancer care. There will also be a respiratory diagnostic and treatment centre.

Hollinswood House, Telford Since the county’s first Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) opened, located at Hollinswood House in Telford, over 57,000 patients had been seen by the end of June 2024 for diagnostic testing.

The centre offers appointments for pathology (blood tests) and radiology, providing extra capacity for non-urgent diagnostic testing.

A state-of-the-art MRI scanner is installed on site at Hollinswood House and means patients have faster access to diagnostic MRIs. Its location in the community also means that patients do not need to travel to a busy hospital site to access their care.

Facilities in our new surgical hub, at the Princess Royal Hospital

Renal dialysis services are also provided in the same building for lower risk dialysis patients, with acute services remaining at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. The new location is double the size of the old unit and is able to provide a more positive environment for patients.

We will continue to develop further services at Hollinswood House during 2024/2025.

The Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) at Hollinswood House

Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH)

Our plans for the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital The approved HTP plans will see the RSH site specialise in emergency care.

This will provide the community with faster access to the right clinical teams, which will deliver better care and outcomes for our patients.

The plans will see a remodelling and expansion of the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital across approximately: • A new 3,200 sq.m Emergency Department and emergency care facilities including an Urgent Treatment Centre and a Critical Care Unit • Emergecy medicine and acute medicine • Consultant-led maternity care • 3,200 sq.m of new children’s centre accommodation including children’s inpatient and surgery services • Gynaecological services • A new Oncology and Haematology Ward • A new entrance, reception and hospitality offer as well as enhanced drop-off facilities to cater for patients across Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and mid Wales.

Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH)

Outpatients entrance now closed On 29 July 2024, we closed the Outpatient entrance at RSH as part of construction works for the new hospital building. The closure will enable works to begin on the build of a new four storey hospital expansion.

To maintain hospital services, the entrance to the Treatment Centre is now the main entrance to the hospital during the works. All other entrances will be unaffected. A new entrance will be made available for the public to enter the hospital opposite the main staff car park leading to RSH Level 0 (basement services).

Signage has been installed at RSH to help patients and visitors navigate their way around the site and colleagues will be on hand to direct and answer patient and visitor queries.
