On-site Car parking
On site car parking is limited and colleagues that request to park onsite at RSH, PRH, SBP or WFH will need apply for a permit. User guides for creating an account and applying for a permit are available on the hospital intranet
Parking Charges
Staff and our NHS Partner Organisations (for example RJAH/GP Surgeries and MPUFT) who work with us have FREE access to park and ride services for both hospitals from Monday to Friday (if employed by SaTH you will need to show your ID Badge to the driver or if you are external you will need to show them a letter if you need a copy of the letter please email sth tr.carparking@nhs.net).
On site parking charges for medical staff are detailed below:

Night Worker Permits
Staff who work nights only 7:30pm to 08:00am are entitled to park on site for free with a valid night worker permit. You can apply for a staff permit on the hospital intranet home page (Application section) and by selecting Night worker from the pay band section.

For medical staff who may not need to park on site all of the time the Trust also has a pay as you go option. Again, you will need to apply for a permit via Nexus. The full instructions of how to access this option can be found on the intranet
Prices are as follows:
• Weekend day rate: £3 per day
• Monday Friday day rate: £4 per day
• On site for up to 20 minutes: No charge
• Up to 2 hours: £1.50
• Up to 3 hours: £2.00
• Up to 4 hours: £2.50
If you are a holder of a registered blue disabled badge there are designated spaces at various locations around the hospital. Parking for registered holders is free, however you still need to apply for a staff permit via the Group Nexus site, selecting blue badge holder under the banding section. Once the blue badge has reached its expiry date and you receive a new blue badge you will need to repeat the process and apply again via the Group Nexus site.
We are aware of how difficult the car parking situation is for patients, visitors and colleagues and we are committed to working with you to improve car parking for everyone. The Trust has an expectation that anyone who works during the operating hours of the Park & Ride should utilise this provision which is Monday to Friday excluding BH and weekends.

zone for on-call, cross site workers at RSH
The Purple zone at RSH is reserved for colleagues that undertake clinical on calls and who work cross site within the same day only and hold a valid parking permit.
This area can be found on the map below:

Who can park in the purple zone?
Clinical facing cross-site and on-call colleagues needing to travel between sites – You must already hold a valid staff permit.
The criteria for these permits are as follows:
• Clinical colleagues who need to travel between sites during the day who need to get into clinics or patient meetings urgently. This is for travel during the day and not for parking in the area at the beginning of the day or remaining in spaces for the whole day.
• Clinical colleagues who are ‘on call’ for a specialty and may be called to the other site in emergency circumstances during the day. This is not for out of hours on call parking or for on call which does not involve moving sites during the day.
• Colleagues who do not have an urgent need to get into the hospital should use the Park & Ride when moving between sites during the day.
Twilight shift - colleagues finishing work after 9.25pm
The criteria for these permits are as follows:
• Clinical colleagues who start work later in the day and their finish time would be outside of the Park & Ride operating times which is currently 9.25 pm.
• On the days that colleagues in this group are not doing a shift ending after the Park & Ride service ends they must use the Park & Ride or park in the other staff car park areas.
What to do if you think you are eligible for purple zone parking?
If you think you may be eligible to park in the purple zone you should ask your operational manager/rota coordinator to email sth tr.carparking@nhs.net
• They will need to provide the reasons why a permit is required
• They will need to tell us if the shift patterns do not fall within the Park & Ride timetable and the reasons why the Park & Ride cannot be used
• You will need to hold a valid parking permit
If you have any questions regarding carparking please email sth tr.carparking@nhs.net

As part of our ongoing commitment to the BMA Fatigue and Facilities Charter, we have a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) / Flow Chart for “Too Tired to Drive Home” to support our resident doctors. This process is to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our doctors, particularly after demanding/on call shifts.
Accommodation or Travel when ‘Too Tired to Drive Home’:
• If you feel unable to travel home safely after a night, long, or late shift due to tiredness, the Trust will provide appropriate rest facilities where you can sleep free of charge.
• If rest facilities are unavailable, the Trust will cover the cost of alternative arrangements for safe travel home via a taxi.
• For those requiring alternative travel home, the Trust will cover your return journey to work. This includes situations where your personal vehicle remains at work.
• If, following a non resident on call working pattern you need to rest due to fatigue, this SOP will be applied.
• If you voluntarily choose to stay resident during your on call period, standard accommodation charges will apply.
These measures reflect our commitment to a safe and supportive working environment. We encourage all doctors to familiarise themselves with this SOP and to utilise these provisions to prioritise their safety and the safety of others. We would also encourage doctors to ensure they are aware of the Operations Manager for their current placement/specialty in the event of needing to access this SOP.
