FTSU Freedom to Speak Up is speaking up about anything that gets in the way of us doing a great job.

The Freedom to Speak Up team are here to make speaking up business as usual and ensure that: When things go wrong, we need to make sure that lessons are learnt and things are improved.

If we think something might go wrong, it’s important that we all feel able to speak up so that potential harm is prevented.

Even when things are good, but could be even better, we should feel

able to say something and should expect that our suggestion is listened to and used as an opportunity for improvement.

Freedom to Speak Up Guardians are here to support workers to speak up when they feel that they are unable to in other ways.

We provide an alternative route and ensure those who speak up are thanked, that the issues they raise are responded to, and make sure that the person speaking up receives feedback on the actions taken. We also work proactively to support the organisation to tackle barriers to speaking up.

Speaking up protects patient safety and improves the lives of workers

PATIENT EXPERIENCE There are a range of definitions of patient experience but ultimately patient experience is what the experience of receiving care feels like for the patient, their family and carers. What does patient experience mean to you?

What do we mean by patient experience?

‘Getting the basics right so that patients are treated as we would wish our loved ones to be treated, with kindness and consideration, and as individuals with their own needs and wishes…

Why this is important within SaTH Our Vision is to provide excellent care for the communities we serve.

Experience is something we have lived through. It is about something that happened and it is our lasting story…

Our Vision is underpinned by four key Values, which have been developed in partnership with our staff, patients, their families and the wider community.

At the same time it is about understanding the dynamics of care in a 21stcentury clinical environment and making sure the systems are in place to ensure the experience is right every time – no matter which member of staff is involved.’ (The Kings Fund) It is defined in all that is perceived, understood and remembered… (The Beryl Institute)

Whilst we need to maintain perspective as the Trust receives considerably more compliments, thanks and expressions of positive feedback. It is important to recognise that the majority of concerns and complaints we receive are due to poor communication.If communication had been better within the patient story clip you just watched, would that have made a difference to their experience?

Ockenden Report ‘One of the most disappointing and deeply worrying themes that has emerged is the reported lack of kindness and compassion from some members of the maternity team at the Trust.’

‘There are some examples of midwives and doctors who have made a huge difference to the women and families due to the care they provided and kindness they showed. However, kind and compassionate care is something that every woman, baby and family deserve and should expect from all midwives, doctors and members of the maternity team.’

Hello my name is…

The hello my name is campaign focuses on reminding staff to introduce themselves to patients appropriately, as this is the first point of contact and an opportunity to put patients at ease.

The late Dr Kate Grainger founded the campaign following her diagnosis of terminal cancer as she found that staff were not always good at introducing themselves before delivering care however it made a great impact when they did.

In Kate’s words: ‘It felt incredibly wrong that such a basic step in communication was missing.

Introductions are about making a human connection between one human being who is suffering and

vulnerable, and another human being who wishes to help. They begin therapeutic relationships and can instantly build trust in difficult circumstances.

It’s not just about an introduction.

It’s about being decent to another human being and ensuring the person is not ‘lost’ as he or she passes through the system.’ (Dr Kate Grainger) Kate’s Story

How does this relate to SaTH? The experiences Kate describes are what happened to her, but as you heard from the patient story clip which was describing an experience within this Trust, we don’t always get it right. Yet it is within our gift to make a difference.
