Friday 5 April 2024
We’re delighted to announce the launch of the PRH Park and Ride, which commenced this week.
The scheme is designed to address the parking challenges at the hospital, ensuring that crucial parking spaces are available for our patients, visitors, and shift-working colleagues.
Where do I park? The minibus runs from Bucks Head AFC Telford United Football Club in Wellington, Telford. You can access it via the Haybridge Road entrance (postcode TF1 2NW), with transportation directly to PRH (Paul Brown Centre). The service runs from 6.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, with minibuses departing every 15 minutes. The timetable is here
Where do I register? To utilise the PRH Park and Ride service, registration is mandatory. Please email sath.prhparkandride@nhs.net with your name, NHS email, and registration number (format: AB24 CDE). Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation email, allowing you to start using the service immediately. More information here.
Once registered, your car will be enrolled for
the duration of the scheme, offering you hasslefree access to the Park and Ride. We value your feedback and suggestions as we strive to enhance our services. Please share your thoughts at sath. improvinghospitals@nhs.net

With Go Live weekend fast approaching the Digital Team attended both sites this week to answer any questions you may have about EPR.
The team visited night shift workers to see how they were feeling about the switchover and how
the team can support you. It was great to hear everyone’s feedback and see so many teams prepared for the weekend.
If you have any questions, email sath.askepr@nhs. net

Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
This month is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, which is a fantastic annual opportunity to raise awareness.
The earlier bowel cancer is spotted, the more treatable it’s likely to be. In fact, more than nine in 10 people survive bowel cancer when it is diagnosed at the earliest stage. However, this drops significantly when diagnosed at the latest stage.
Knowing the symptoms is important to help spot bowel cancer early.
Bowel cancer is cancer that begins in the large bowel, which is made up of the colon and rectum. It’s sometimes called colorectal cancer.
Having the symptoms listed in the picture doesn’t always mean you have bowel cancer. But it’s still important to find out what’s causing them.
There will be awareness activities taking place throughout the month, starting on Wednesday 10 April, in the Mytton Restaurant between 122pm and on Thursday 18 April at PRH, in the conservatory outside the League of Friends shop.
SaTH Charity Football Tournament
Following on from the success of last year’s SaTH Charity football tournament, which raised over £1,000, colleague Mark Rawlings is organising another seven-a-side tournament for SaTH teams on Sunday 19 May, 10am-4pm at the Shrewsbury Sports Village.
There are two spots left for teams to enter. If you are interested, please email mark.rawlings@nhs.net
Renowned Historian to host an illustrated talk on Shrewsbury
David Trumper, renowned historian, and author of over 20 books, is giving an illustrated talk about the history of Shrewsbury to raise money for SaTH Charity’s respiratory fund and Crane Quality Counselling.
The event will take place on Saturday 20 April at 7pm, at the Masonic Hall (old St Michael’s Church). Tickets are £7 (cash on the door). David has been collecting pictures over several years and will be covering topics such as royal visits from various royal families around the world and the impact of flooding over the years.
David was inspired to raise money for SaTH Charity after the excellent care he received from the hospital. David said: “I am doing the talk to, in some small way, to repay the superb treatment I received when I was a patient on the respiratory unit in October 2022.”
Dr Jones-Perrott, Clinical Director for Respiratory Medicine, said of the event: “We are so grateful to David for organising this event, we know that the money raised will go on to support other patients.”
Julia Clarke, Director of Public Participation at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, said: “We are so grateful to David for organising this event inspired by his experience with our respiratory team, we know the money raised will make a difference to patients and their relatives.”

Ramadan celebrations
On Tuesday 2 April, the first hospitalwide Iftar took place in the Doctors’ Mess, marking a milestone in ongoing efforts to foster an inclusive and welcoming environment at RSH.
This gathering was attended by over 40 colleagues, both Muslims and non-Muslims, creating a tapestry of cultural and religious unity that truly encapsulates the spirit of Ramadan. It was an evening that went beyond merely breaking the fast; it was a celebration of communal harmony, mutual respect, and illustrating the diverse and inclusive culture we are proud to foster at SaTH.
The event was organised, together with two of his colleagues, by Dr Mahmoud Elsehawy, a medical registrar at RSH. At the 2023 Trust Celebratory Awards he was awarded the Unsung Hero Award, which further motivated his commitment to enhancing workplace culture.
The essence of Ramadan, observed from March 11 to April 9 this year, is profound, emphasising spiritual reflection, discipline, and community. The iftar event was a reflection of these values, aiming to deepen the understanding of each other and strengthen the bonds within the professional community.
Mahmoud said: “I believe it is vital to articulate the intent behind our gathering, emphasising that it was not merely about breaking a fast but was a deliberate effort to cultivate a sense of belonging and inclusivity among our staff. We imagine a future at SaTH where empathy and a welcoming atmosphere are prioritised, making our hospital an exceptional workplace for all.”
Eid commemorates the end of the period of fasting, the end of Ramadhan. After a month of daily fasting, prayers and spirituality, Muslims around the world will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr.
The actions taken by Allied Health Professionals (AHPs) to improve health and reduce health inequalities also help the NHS tackle climate change.

Diabetes event
The Diabetes Foot Care Team is to hold an event to discuss diabetes and feet with the support of Shrewsbury’s town mayor.
It will be held on Tuesday 16 April between 5pm and 8pm at the Shrewsbury Town Football Ground, in Oteley Rd, Shrewsbury. The team has put together an evening to discuss all about diabetes and feet with the mayor Mrs Becky Wall’s support.
Dr Probal Moulik, Consultant Diabetologist, said: “I am passionate about improving diabetes footcare in the area. There are more than 180 amputations caused by diabetes in the UK every week, that’s more than one amputation an hour. Many amputations are preventable with the right care, and we would like to take this opportunity to offer advice and support to help you get the right foot care.”
The evening will include talks from Dr Moulik and Miss Merriman, Vascular Consultant. They will be presenting sessions about diabetes foot risks, how to reduce them and what care to expect when things go wrong.
Nichola Beard, Podiatry Diabetes Lead, said that people with diabetes can lose the sensation in their feet and it was important that people attended their annual diabetes foot screening at their GP practice to check their feet and look for these risks. At a foot check, feet are tested
for numbness, their blood flow checked, the shape of feet assessed and the skin examined.
If you are considered high risk, you will be referred to the community Podiatry Team who will provide more detailed assessments and formulate a care plan to prevent problems including providing special insoles for shoes, ongoing podiatric care and any other specialist referrals if required.
A new social group for people with diabetes and foot disease is also being launched. The Diabetes Foot Group (DFG) aims to provide an open forum for people to discuss issues around diabetes foot disease. Support and advice will also be available, as well as guidance about diabetes services at the hospital and in the community.
If you would like to attend the event, please let the team know so they can arrange complimentary refreshments. Telephone 01743 261000 ext 3055 and leave a message or email sath.dfcadmin@nhs.net.
