Midwives retire with over 200 years’ experience
Last week, six of our fantastic midwives retired from SaTH after over 200 years of experience working in the NHS. Sally Dodd, Mandy Powell, Cindy Rich, Debbie Thomas, Melanie Johnston and Jan Latham who worked across our Labour Ward, Antenatal Ward and Bereavement, retired on Friday following a special sendoff organised by colleagues. Melanie spoke with us and shared about her time in the NHS, she said: “I initially began
my career as a nurse in 1980 in the Bangor School of Nursing, where I worked until 1985 before beginning my training as a midwife in Bedfordshire, before moving to Plymouth and then Liverpool. “I then worked as a community midwife based at the Wrekin Maternity Unit for seven years, where I also piloted caseload midwifery for a year in 1997, after which I worked part time on the community and labour ward. In the last three years I have worked full-time on the labour ward.”
Melanie added: “I have many special memories of my time here and have seen lots of changes. One particular highlight included the caseload midwifery pilot and having my own children was a dream, although I probably wasn’t a dream patient! “I have made so many friends among my colleagues and have loved working for this Trust.” Thank you and good luck to all our retirees, you will be greatly missed.
