Steve Jenkins is a Specialist Orthodontic Technician, Deputy Manager at the Maxillofacial and Orthodontic Laboratory.

He said: “My first NHS role was as an Orthodontic Technician working in the West Wales Health Authority at Glangwilli hospital in Carmarthen. I was supported by the West Glamorgan Trust at Morriston Hospital Swansea to enable me to achieve an advanced certificate in orthodontics at Cardiff on a part-time course.”

Steve later qualified in the advanced orthodontic certificate at Cardiff and was self-employed for 35 years as a laboratory owner/ manager specialising in orthodontic and restorative work.

“Since joining the NHS 12 years ago I have been really inspired by the variety and complexity of the work I am now involved in. The role has taken me into new areas and stretched me to work in a complex and interesting hospital environment.

“I have found the NHS to be an excellent employer with opportunities to develop and grow as a person. It is lovely to be part of a big and diverse team who are all happy to offer help and advise.”

Helene Cloete is a Clinical Embryologist at The Shropshire and Mid Wales Fertility Centre. She is involved in most aspects of looking after embryos and deciding on the treatment path with patients once their IVF cycle has started. Part of her role also involves the freezing and preserving of sperm, eggs or embryos.

“Medicine was always something I always wanted to do growing up and I had an affinity to the maternity and pregnancy route.

“I came across embryology and it seemed the perfect fit – being witness to the origins of life and amazement that we can help patients who struggle to conceive naturally, and that great balance between a patientfacing role and working away from that quite clinically and methodically.”

Funeral of Dr Moira Kaye This year’s celebration of our scientists is tinged with sadness, given the untimely death last month of our valued colleague, Dr Moira Kaye.

Moira, as a skilled and knowledgeable Consultant Clinical Scientist in Microbiology, was one of those we would have looked to thank this week.

Today (Friday 18 March) is her funeral and our thoughts are with her family as they have been every day since her death.

Colleagues have spoken of their admiration for Moira and she is fondly remembered by all who were lucky enough to work with her.

Since re-joining SaTH in 2019, Moira was an important and popular member of our Microbiology team.

Moira’s contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic was incredible, providing guidance to our doctors and nurses in the hospital, IPC teams and supporting our lab staff to meet the demands of increasing testing requirements.

The first ever National Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) Day was held earlier this week and we joined other organisations to put the spotlight on our CNS colleagues.

They featured on social media and on our website. The aim of CNS Day was to raise awareness about this expert role and its contribution to cancer care.

CNS Day was founded by Greater Manchester Cancer Alliance, with support from others, to raise the profile of cancer clinical nurse specialists at a time when patients and the cancer workforce need them more than ever.

The National Cancer Workforce Plan (2017) and NHS England’s People Plan (2020) both pledge to increase and transform the cancer workforce to support the delivery of 21st Century care.

Santa’s a cut above for fundraising Rotarian Peter Love, AKA Father Christmas, boosted the Swan Fund when he shaved off his beard for three charities.

Every year Peter grows a beard to take up the role of Santa and traditionally is sponsored to shave it off after his festive season is over.

He is a member of Shrewsbury Severn Rotary Club which decided that the main beneficiary of the shave this year would be the Swan Fund, which received £1,039.

Lead Nurse, Jules Lewis, went along to Risdon’s Barbers at Shrewsbury Market Hall to watch the sponsored shave and to receive a cheque.

Hats off for brain tumour research Support Services Division, said: “A Facebook group dedicated to this tumour has about 106 members, only six are from the UK. There is no specific treatment pathway for this tumour, so initial treatment (33 sessions of radiotherapy) is the same as a Glioblastoma Multiforme IV, which is the most deadliest of brain tumours in adults.”

Doctor’s defibrillator plea as swimmer’s life saved A SaTH doctor has praised leisure centre staff for using a defibrillator to save the life of a swimmer.

Father-of-two Ben Phillips suffered a cardiac arrest when he was swimming underwater at Oswestry Leisure Centre pool and blacked out.

“Getting defibrillators out into the community is really important. If Ben had just had CPR and was waiting for an ambulance the outcome is likely to have been very different – the fact that they gave him a shock immediately is life and brain saving.”

Ben said: “I am eternally grateful that the lifeguards were there and reacted so calmly and swiftly in that situation. I am grateful that as a father of two young children I am still here and it is thanks to them and the fact that there was a defibrillator at the pool.”

His girlfriend alerted leisure centre staff who pulled Ben from the pool.

He was resuscitated by the side of the pool after staff administered CPR and the defibrillator - an electronic device that applies an electric shock to restore the rhythm of your heart.

Calling all knitters!

An appeal is being made to knitters to help create blankets for patients at risk of falls, for while they are staying at our hospitals.

The Falls Prevention Team is looking for people to knit or donate the blankets to use in a trial. The blankets will serve as a visual cue to staff that a patient is at greater risk of falls, and therefore requires closer observation.

Blankets need to be bright yellow – the themed colour for falls prevention – and 1m x 1m in size with no loose threads. The appeal is separate to the blanket appeal for Dementia patients.

Due to infection control, the blankets are single-use items and will be taken home with the patient when discharged. They must be knitted using new wool, or purchased brand new.

Ben who is an actor, director and teacher was later transferred from RSH to his hometown of Liverpool for further tests.

He was due to start a tour with his one-man show called ‘The Long Way Home’, but it has now been postponed until the Autumn.

Roses left by Prayer Tree A small bouquet of roses was left by the Prayer Tree at the Chapel door at PRH. SaTH chaplain The Reverend Keith Osmund-Smith said it was a lovely start to the weekend.

Cervical screening service for SaTH colleagues Lead Colposcopy Nurse Claire Carr has been talking about the cervical screening service she set up for colleagues at SaTH. She runs lunchtime smears three times a week so you do not have to take time out of work to have a cervical smear.

Anyone due for a smear test can make an appointment at either PRH or RSH by calling the colposcopy secretaries on 5967, 5968, 5969.

Claire set up the service because she realises how difficult it is for colleagues to get an appointment out of work to coincide with their time off.

Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month Gynaecological and the Patient Experience teams have linked up to promote Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month during March.

They have set up a noticeboard in the entrance of the Women and Children’s atrium at PRH to provide information on ovarian cancer.

Target Ovarian Cancer charity kindly provided resources free of charge for the noticeboard.

Each year 7,400 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer in the UK. Diagnosed early, ovarian cancer is easier to treat, yet only 20% of women in the UK are aware of the symptoms.

Symptoms include: Feeling bloated, feeling full quicky, pelvic or abdominal pain and urinary symptoms. By raising awareness, it is hoped it will help improve early diagnosis and ensure more people get the treatment and support they need.

Family of Steven Fisher visit hospital to give their thanks The family raised money through several different events including charity walks, a memorial for Steve, and donations from friends, family and colleagues.

In total, £17,000 was raised; £12,000 has been donated ITU, £2,000 to WMAS and £3,000 will go to a local Long Covid clinic where Marsha, Steve’s wife, works.

On 21 February, which was Steve’s birthday, the family visited the Princess Royal Hospital to personally deliver hampers for staff on ITU as well as taking the opportunity to thank them again for taking care of Steve during his time on the Unit.

Artist presents work to junior doctor Prominent local artist Sue Campion presented one of our junior doctors with a print of her work and a letter of thanks after he diagnosed that she had had a heart attack.

Sue attended A&E at RSH and Junior Doctor Ben Passmore-Webb was one of those to look after her.

She feels that Ben may have saved her life as he could have sent her away easily as the visible signs of condition had gone.

Ben having picked up the heart attack, Sue was sent over to PRH where she stayed for two weeks and then had a stent fitted at Stoke.

Sue wanted to recognise Ben and say a big thank you with the presentation.

She also said that she would like to donate some artwork to the Trust to brighten up areas as a further way of recognising the quality and compassionate care she has received.

Donation of ‘kindness snack boxes’ to staff Donations of ‘Kindness snack boxes’ were delivered to staff at PRH with thanks to The Ironbridge Lions Club. This is the third donation they have made since the start of the pandemic.

As father-in-law to Matron Claire Marsh, John Marsh, a member of the Lions, knows first hand how busy a shift can be and how it can be difficult it can be to grab a drink or snack. The snack boxes are there for staff to grab and go whilst busy and on the move.

John Marsh said: “We wanted to give these bags for the staff rooms to say thank you to our wonderful NHS for all their amazing care during the pandemic, which is still far from over.”

Safer Sleep Week

New buying and selling annual leave process

This week is Safer Sleep Week and The Lullaby Trust has created a display pack containing vital safer sleep information for professionals.

The Trust has revised the Annual Leave Procedure (part of the Leave Cluster of Policies).

Safer Sleep Week this year focuses on the digital world. Social media plays a huge role in parenting nowadays, with anyone looking after a baby going onto Instagram for advice and parenting hacks.

All staff will be able to request to buy and sell some annual leave from the 2022/23 leave year for Agenda for Change staff, and for Medical staff from the start of their next leave year.

However, there are lots of images and tips that go viral which can sadly increase the risk of SIDS occurring. This year we are saying #letskeepitclear and reminding everyone of our simple and easy to follow safer sleep advice.

I am a great believer in getting the basics right which will then be passed on to the next cohort and so on and before you know it you have an army of amazing nurses. I also realised that working in health care the impact of the demands we are faced with daily means that the stress we experience can stop us from remembering to be kind to one another. This is where FTSU has become such an important tool and why I decided to become an ambassador.

I felt that everyone needed someone to talk to the title of manager and colours of uniforms can frighten people. FTSU is a way of connecting with people and often people don’t want to escalate their concerns but a safe space to talk. I’m also a qualified coach and I felt those skills were transferable to FTSU.

Karen Forrest Following working as a carer in a nursing home for five years, I qualified as a nurse and starting working at SaTH in 2000, which is where I have pursued my career for all but four of the last 22 years.

The majority of that time I worked on the dialysis unit which I loved but in 2018 I decided that it would be good for me to work on a ward and I joined Ward 28 as a vascular nurse. Then COVID came along and it became a renal ward and the vulnerability of our patients meant there were lots of deaths, which was very hard. I also acted up as ward manager on Ward 28 when it became general medicine and it was during this time that I reflected on what next in my career.

I think SaTH is a great place to work and I hope that all of my 6000+ colleagues do too. I’m passionate about the changes we have already made from improving our care to being more open and transparent and I’m excited about further improvements to come. We are an amazing community here at the Trust and we need to make sure we all look after each other.

And something you may not know about me is that I’ve been a passionate horse rider for 40 years and love getting down in the muck!

We are extremely pleased that following a recent Environment Health Officer’s inspection that the Food Safety Rating awarded has been maintained with the highest level of 5 for the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital with no non compliances and only two recommendations.

In summary the inspection required us to provide assurance on compliance with: •

Cleaning the two-step cleaning method

I have over the last 30 years had many appointments at the Princess Royal Hospital and I have been treated with courtesy and professionally by all the staff.
