SABR team treats its first patient Our multi-disciplinary radiotherapy team has treated its first patient with SABR (Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy) after many years of extensive work.

SABR is a treatment for early-stage lung tumours. It delivers an extremely high dose of radiation and targets the tumour more precisely than other radiotherapy treatments.

As it is treating a smaller area it limits the effect on other healthy organs such as the spinal cord, heart and the healthy part of the lung.

SABR treatment also cuts back on the number of radiotherapy treatments a patient has to have – reducing it from 20 treatments every other day to just five every other day.

Extensive work was carried out by a multidisciplinary SABR team over many years before it could treat the first patient. Cleaning colleagues keep our hospitals safe Cleaning colleagues at our two hospitals have been a key part of our frontline workforce in ensuring that our hospitals are kept clean and functioning.

They have played a pivotal role in keeping our wards and departments clean and safe and this year the Cleanliness Technician team was awarded SaTH’s Chief Executive Award for Team of the Year as it was recognised that the hospital would not be able to function without them.

Letter of thanks to colleagues for arranging wedding

The happy couple on their wedding day and the thank you letter, below A letter of thanks was sent to staff on Ward 35N after they arranged a wedding for a patient and his fiancée in just five-and-a-half hours.

Patient Wayne Hassall and Joanne had been together for over 30 years and thought it was time to tie the knot.

With the help of ward staff and the couple’s daughters a registrar was organised, wedding outfits were arranged for both Wayne and Jo, a posy for Jo, button holes and Cava was authorised as a toast. Measurements were taken using elastic fabric so wedding rings could be bought, SaTH catering assistant Sarah Downing decorated a cake for the couple and a few wedding invitations were designed and pulled together so they had a keepsake.

Jo’s make-up and hair was done in the doctor’s office and silver decorations were put around the door. A video call also took place with Wayne’s mum to show her him in his finery, Jo getting ready and also the cake in the run-up to teir happy day.

Ward Clerk Lydia Griffiths said: “We wanted to make it really special for them.”

Wayne was admitted to hospital in August and sadly passed away on 15 November.

Getting ‘sorted’ As part of our efforts to further promote improvement across the Trust, we are holding a two-day “5S Sort” event across both RSH and PRH, giving all areas the opportunity to dispose of unwanted clinical and nonclinical items.

The idea behind this event is to provide an opportunity to remove the unnecessary items from areas that may have built up over time to ensure the working environment remains safe and clutter free.

At SaTH your wellbeing matters and that’s why we all need to take some time to consider t factors which have an impact on our wellbeing.

The COVID-19 crisis has affected us all, whether this is within our personal life or at work. This is why this week we’ve launched Wellbeing Wednesdays. Each Wednesday we will be touching on different topic ranging from exercise, nutrition, sleep, financial advice and mindfulness. You will be able to find useful tips, resources and we will also be arranging some online sessions.

Each Wednesday our staff wellbeing team will be walking round our two hospitals to speak to you ask how you are feeling and what we can do to support you and to promote the importance of looking after ourselves. They will be in their purple wellbeing t-shirts so do look out for them – the are there to help you.

As part of Wellbeing Wednesday, we’ve created a Wellbeing Wheel which is intended to help yo think about your wellbeing and lifestyle. We encourage all staff to work with a trusted colleague or line manager to complete the Wellbeing Wheel and to develop a Wellbeing Action Plan which you should review regularly. This booklet also outlines the support available from SaTH to help improv and enhance your wellbeing.

There is a lot of research to support the role nature plays in protecting and supporting our mental health. Nature is all around us whether it be in a garden, outside our office window, a local park or on daily walks. We are very lucky at SaTH with the surroundings we have, therefore we have put together these walking route maps and a list of common wildlife for you to enjoy on your own or with colleagues, friends and family. The final word...

I brought my elderly mother for an audiology review, our first time visiting the Royal Shrewsbury hospital following a move to Shropshire.

I wanted to let you know how impressed we were with every member of staff we met including the car park attendant, canteen staff and reception staff, they were polite and helpful and cheery.

A special thanks to Annsmaria, the audiologist, who was professional, kind and patient with my mum and showed her a great deal of respect.

Many thanks for all they, and I'm sure all staff, do to make a visit run as smoothly as possible.
