SaTH reaches the final Four colleagues from SaTH will find out next week if they are the winners in a national awards.

Rachel Armstrong, Lead Nurse for Education and Quality, Lara Evans, Clinical Practice Educator and Sister Helen Moore, Research Matron (pictured right) are finalists in the Nursing Times Workforce Awards - Preceptorship of the Year.

They co-delivered a patient improvement research project as part of the Trust’s Preceptorship Programme. Sath is the only Trust nationally that offers this fantastic opportunity to our newly qualified nurses and nursing associates. This award recognises programmes which demonstrate support, development, coaching and mentorship of new staff.

And Professional Development Nurse, Jamie Henry – recent

winner of the Nursing Times Rising Star Award – is also a finalist in the Overseas Nurse of the Year category.

The September 2020 Preceptorship cohort were the first to be involved in the research element.

The Overseas Nurse of the Year award recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to their employer since moving to work in the UK.

The Nursing Times Workforce award winners will be announced on 17 November – and SaTH will be rooting for Jamie, Rachel, Lara and Helen.

Celebrating World Radiography day SaTH has been recognising the great work of our radiology teams as World Radiography Day was marked this week.

World Radiography Day is celebrated on 8 November each year. The date marks the anniversary of the discovery of Xrays by Wilhelm Roentgen in 1895.

This year is particularly special as the Day looked at how radiographers have come together during the COVID-19 crisis and the great role that they play within the NHS.

The team consists of:  66 Radiographers and Senior Radiographers  Eleven Superintendent Radiographers  Seven Advanced Practice reporting Radiographers  Twenty-three reporting Ultrasonographers Here at the Trust, Radiology and  Three Consultant Imaging services provide CT, MRI and Radiographers Ultrasound scanning, Nuclear  Ten Assistants Practitioners Medicine imaging and plain film  Three Apprentice examinations to the A&E, inpatient, Radiographers and student outpatient and GP community as well Radiographers who come on as Mammography symptomatic and placement Breast Screening services.

Radiographers worldwide can use the day and the days around the date to promote radiography as a career, as a vital contribution to modern healthcare, and as an opportunity to increase public awareness of diagnostic imaging and radiation therapy.

The Radiography team is supported by:  21 Consultant Radiologists  44 imaging assistants  A Radiology Systems Team An Administration and Clerical team Here are some fascinating facts about imaging the team carried out in 2020/21.

“These initial roles paved the way for a pioneering workforce and brought ambition and innovation to the clinical workplace,” she said.

We currently employ 48 ACPs across a variety of specialities including medicine, paediatrics, Emergency Medicine, surgery and intensive care, and next year will also see the first Consultant ACP roles in Acute Medicine

In 2014 Emma Jones, Trust Lead ACP, and Dr Lacy-Colson established a solid and structured career path for all non-medical professionals who wanted to remain in patient -facing positions.

ACPs within the Trust come from diverse clinical backgrounds including nursing, allied health professions such as physiotherapy and paramedic science. They bring with them wide and varied experience from their separate fields, but ACP training provided at SaTH also seeks to build on that.

To date SaTH has been pivotal in supporting more than 45 ACPs on their path to achieving a Masters qualification in Advanced Clinical Practice.

In addition, all trainees complete a clinical curriculum which consists of core and speciality specific competencies. The curricula have been developed, led and delivered within the Trust to ensure ACPs have a solid foundation to enter qualified roles.

Looking to the future for ACPs at SaTH advance curricula have been designed and implemented for further ACP development. SaTH now supports training starting at a Band 6 ACP development post through to a formal Consultant ACP training programme where Acute Medicine will see the first of these Consultant ACP roles in 2022.

You will be required for two days per month for an initial six months, after which this will be reviewed, potentially ongoing with reduced time commitment for a further 12 months. To enable all staff to get involved, there is financial support available for teams that work with rotas or shifts.

Sally raises a fantastic £10,000 for equipment Former patient, Sally Jamieson, has been raising money for the SaTH Charity breast cancer fund since she was diagnosed in 2016 and has now raised a total of more than £10,000.

The money was raised from various events including most recently, a car boot, a Halloween Hunt for Radbrook School, a raffle, and a spooky trail. In the family friendly spooky trail, participants followed spooky clues in the Quarry to receive a prize from the cauldron at the end.

On her fundraising page, Sally said: "The final figure is in £2,465! Thank you all so much for your support. And of course most importantly we have raised awareness and this money will support local people with breast cancer. Thank you for your dedication As a Trust we observed Remembrance Day on 11 November in honour of the lives that have been lost in service and to thank our Armed Forces.

We are proud signatories of the Armed Forces Covenant, and Remembrance Day is a timely reminder of the strong ties between the Armed Forces and the National Health Service.

Our Chaplaincy Team held services within the hospital chapels on Thursday to remember and honour service men and women. The team will also hold services across both sites on Remembrance Sunday (14 November).

This beautiful piece of artwork has been donated to SaTH Charity by the family of a patient who recently passed away.

The patient was a keen artist who had been treated at the Princess Royal Hospital. This particular painting was inspired by her own experience and care.

Mike’s amazing Manchester Marathon to say thank you Mike Hazeldine had always wanted to challenge himself to run a marathon and, after his dad was hospitalised with COVID-19 in 2020, this gave him the motivation to do it.

In October, Mike ran the Manchester Marathon in 3.54 minutes and has so far raised an amazing £659 for SaTH Charity, and HDU fund Mike’s dad was treated at RSH. He said: “I wanted to raise funds for SaTH charity due to the excellent care and attention given to my Dad as he battled COVID in late 2020.

“With the care he received from the staff at the hospital he managed to overcome the virus and is progressing really well with his rehabilitation.

“We will always be grateful for the support given to my Dad and Mum and the rest of the family.”

Getting ‘sorted’ As part of our efforts to further promote improvement across the Trust, we are holding a two-day “5S Sort” event across both RSH and PRH, giving all areas the opportunity to dispose of unwanted clinical and nonclinical items.

The idea behind this event is to provide an opportunity to remove the unnecessary items from areas that may have built up over time to ensure the working environment remains safe and clutter free.

We would like all areas of the Trust to get involved to identify the unnecessary kit/stock/items in their dept/ ward/ area of work

that they no longer need.

On November 29 (RSH) and 30 (PRH) there will be a team on site to come and collect your unwanted items (clinical/ nonclinical) and a decision will then be made to see whether it can be repaired, put on “Warpit” for redistribution or scrapped. We will pull together a collection timetable and ask that areas wishing to be involved inform us prior to the event.

At SaTH your wellbeing matters and that’s why we all need to take some time to consider t factors which have an impact on our wellbeing.

The COVID-19 crisis has affected us all, whether this is within our personal life or at work. This is why this week we’ve launched Wellbeing Wednesdays. Each Wednesday we will be touching on different topic ranging from exercise, nutrition, sleep, financial advice and mindfulness. You will be able to find useful tips, resources and we will also be arranging some online sessions.

Each Wednesday our staff wellbeing team will be walking round our two hospitals to speak to you ask how you are feeling and what we can do to support you and to promote the importance of looking after ourselves. They will be in their purple wellbeing t-shirts so do look out for them – the are there to help you.

There is a lot of research to support the role nature plays in protecting and supporting our mental health. Nature is all around us whether it be in a garden, outside our office window, a local park or on daily walks. We are very lucky at SaTH with the surroundings we have, therefore we have put together these walking route maps and a list of common wildlife for you to enjoy on your own or with colleagues, friends and family.
