Jamie is a Rising Star Congratulations to Jamie Henry, Professional Development Nurse in our International Nursing Team, who has been crowned the winner in the ‘Rising Star’ category at the Nursing Times Awards 2021.

Her exceptional work at the Trust has seen her help more than 200 international nurses prepare for and pass their exams, using her own experience as an overseas nurse to support and guide them.

Jamie (pictured right) helps to educate, train and support international nurses to take their competence exams, called the nursing OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examinations).

Jamie said: “It is a great honour and privilege to be named the winner of the Nursing Times Rising Star Award for 2021. Nursing has always been my dream as I have always loved looking after patients, but I have never imagined that looking after nurses would also be immensely gratifying.

“This recognition highlights the great work and effort the whole team has put in to deliver one of the best pastoral packages in the country and our commitment to ensure our nurses know they are looked after from the moment they arrive. The work continues to evolve and this will drive us forward in our conviction to deliver high standards of nurse training and support.”

SaTH’s innovative new team of Cancer Care Navigators were finalists in the Nursing Times Awards 2021 Team of the Year Award.

The team was shortlisted for their work supporting patients with suspected cancer from the point of referral to diagnosis, and through to living with and beyond cancer.

Jessica Greenwood, Lead Cancer Nurse, said: “To be shortlisted for Team of the Year by the Nursing Times is such an achievement and recognises the care and compassion that our Cancer Care Navigators have shown to our patients and their families. We are so proud of the team and congratulate them all for their hard work.”

The sound of steel drums came to PRH this culture, style and challenges of the Caribbean week—in celebration of, and to mark the end and Africa in the UK. The month was an opportunity to celebrate, educate and raise awareness of the contributions of black colleagues and communities, and was also a chance for all colleagues to show allyship and support.

We look forward to joining the Chair and other colleagues to provide a forum for colleagues, patients, and families to share their experiences, support each other and network, whilst also supporting the organisation’s strategic Diversity and Inclusion ambition.

Saying goodbye

This week, SaTH said goodbye to Dr Cerys Burrows and Steph Kane.

When she switched off the microscope for the last time in 2020, many of us lost a great friend as well as a great colleague, so we were delighted that Cerys stayed on a little longer in her role as Medical Examiner, a service which she pioneered at SaTH.

Cerys joined the Cellular Pathology Department in June 2006, Cerys was the first female Consultant in the RSH Histopathology Team, and brought subspeciality interests in breast, head and neck, and gastro- Happy retirement today too to Falls Practitioner intestinal pathology, as well as covering all aspects Steph Kane. of general histopathology and autopsy work.

At SaTH your wellbeing matters and that’s why we all need to take some time to consider t factors which have an impact on our wellbeing.

The COVID-19 crisis has affected us all, whether this is within our personal life or at work. This is why this week we’ve launched Wellbeing Wednesdays. Each Wednesday we will be touching on different topic ranging from exercise, nutrition, sleep, financial advice and mindfulness. You will be able to find useful tips, resources and we will also be arranging some online sessions.

Each Wednesday our staff wellbeing team will be walking round our two hospitals to speak to you ask how you are feeling and what we can do to support you and to promote the importance of looking after ourselves. They will be in their purple wellbeing t-shirts so do look out for them – the are there to help you.

As part of Wellbeing Wednesday, we’ve created a Wellbeing Wheel which is intended to help you think about your wellbeing and lifestyle. We encourage all staff to work with a trusted colleague or line manager to complete the Wellbeing Wheel and to develop a Wellbeing Action Plan which you should review regularly. This booklet also outlines the support available from SaTH to help improv and enhance your wellbeing.

Long COVID support As part of our Wellbeing Wednesday’s we are pleased to launch our full Long COVID Support package for staff and managers. This includes a support group, information booklet, manager’s guidance to support staff with long COVID and a breathing techniques video created by our Physiotherapists. There is a lot of research to support the role nature plays in protecting and supporting our mental health. Nature is all around us whether it be in a garden, outside our office window, a local park or on daily walks. We are very lucky at SaTH with the surroundings we have, therefore we have put together these walking route maps and a list of common wildlife for you to enjoy on your own or with colleagues, friends and family. This could be on your lunch break or maybe schedule in a weekly walk after work in the evening. More info here.
