Thank you to our AHPs This week we are saying a very big thank you to all of our AHP (Allied Health Professions) colleagues.

Yesterday marked AHPs’ Day—an annual opportunity for AHPs to celebrate being part of the AHP family; and to showcase to others the impact they make to the delivery of high quality care.

There are 14 AHP roles which include dietitians, occupational therapists, operating department practitioners, orthoptists, osteopaths, speech and language therapists, physiotherapists, prosthetists and orthotists, diagnostic and therapeutic radiographers, chiropodists and podiatrists.

Beth Jones is an Occupational Therapist “I work within the inpatient therapies team. My role involves the assessing of patients’ function on the ward, in order to support with the discharge planning of them leaving the acute setting, either back to their home or further rehabilitation or assessment. A large part of my role is facilitating patients to remain or regain independence as much as possible.”

Kate Mitchell is a Therapy Support Worker on Ward 28 “I assist physiotherapists and occupational therapists by enabling assessments and reviews of patients, including mobility and transfer progressions. I also support patients in their emotional and physical needs.

“I provide recommended equipment, utilising a whole person holistic approach with information gathered about home life; and I liaise between all professions as required to enable the best and most appropriate outcome for each patient with considerations for their families too.”

from babies and children to end of life care. We also provide the largest therapy outpatient service in Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Dietetics and Speech & Language Therapy services across the whole county.

October is Black History Month in the UK, and the theme this year is ‘Proud to Be’.

The month is an opportunity to celebrate, educate and raise awareness of the contributions of black colleagues and communities, and is also a chance for all colleagues to show allyship and support.

NHS England and NHS Improvement (Midlands) in partnership with the Midlands Leadership and Lifelong Learning Team, are holding a series of events for all NHS staff throughout the month which aim to share lived experiences and highlight changes that should have or are in the process of happening.

The People Directorate at NHSEi are organising ‘Race Ahead – NHS Big Conversation on Race’ during October.

Race Ahead will be a series of conversations and panel discussions on Tuesdays 19 and 26 October, from 10am 1pm focused on the specific actions we can all take to improve the outcomes and experiences of our staff.

As the NHS is the largest employer of people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds in the country and across Europe, the objective of Race Ahead will be to tackle the workplace discrimination that some of our staff continue to face.

The themes of the sessions are: 

All part of Freedom to Speak Up month, there will be a virtual masterclass on ‘Civility Saves Lives’ on 25 October from 12noon until 1pm.

This will be delivered by our guest speaker Dr Chris Turner, ED Consultant University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire.

Girl Guides say thank you with rainbow mosiacs Girlguiding Shropshire have created two beautiful mosaic rainbows to be displayed at The Princess Royal Hospital and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

The girl guides held two activities days in Attingham Park’s ‘Field of Play’ where everyone was invited to add their own part to the mosaic.

At SaTH your wellbeing matters and that’s why we all need to take some time to consider t factors which have an impact on our wellbeing.

The COVID-19 crisis has affected us all, whether this is within our personal life or at work. This is why this week we’ve launched Wellbeing Wednesdays. Each Wednesday we will be touching on different topic ranging from exercise, nutrition, sleep, financial advice and mindfulness. You will be able to find useful tips, resources and we will also be arranging some online sessions.

Each Wednesday our staff wellbeing team will be walking round our two hospitals to speak to you ask how you are feeling and what we can do to support you and to promote the importance of looking after ourselves. They will be in their purple wellbeing t-shirts so do look out for them – the are there to help you.

As part of Wellbeing Wednesday, we’ve created a Wellbeing Wheel which is intended to help you think about your wellbeing and lifestyle. We encourage all staff to work with a trusted colleague or line manager to complete the Wellbeing Wheel and to develop a Wellbeing Action Plan which you should review regularly. This booklet also outlines the support available from SaTH to help improv and enhance your wellbeing.

Long COVID support As part of our Wellbeing Wednesday’s we are pleased to launch our full Long COVID Support package for staff and managers. This includes a support group, information booklet, manager’s guidance to support staff with long COVID and a breathing techniques video created by our Physiotherapists. There is a lot of research to support the role nature plays in protecting and supporting our mental health. Nature is all around us whether it be in a garden, outside our office window, a local park or on daily walks. We are very lucky at SaTH with the surroundings we have, therefore we have put together these walking route maps and a list of common wildlife for you to enjoy on your own or with colleagues, friends and family. This could be on your lunch break or maybe schedule in a weekly walk after work in the evening. More info here.

We have added more financial sessions to our wellbeing offer. Barclay’s Bank will be delivering seminars on “New to Investing” and “Move or Improve” throughout July 2021 and to ensure these are easily accessible to staff we will be delivering these online as well as streaming at both PRH and RSH sites.
