National Recognition SaTH’s nursing team have received not one, but two nominations for this year’s Nursing Times Awards. Our Cancer Care Navigator team (above) are up for an award as ‘Team of the Year’ and one of our Professional Development Nurses, Jamie Henry (right), has been shortlisted in the ‘Rising Star’ category.

The Cancer Care Navigators have been doing amazing work in supporting patients from diagnosis, into treatment, and onto living with, and beyond cancer. The care and compassion they have shown to patients and families is why they have been recognised.

Jamie has done phenomenal work inside the Trust, helping over 200 international nurses prepare for and pass their exams, using her own experiences to support and guide them all the way. On top of that, she went back into intensive care during the last wave of the pandemic to help tackle the extra pressures in our hospitals.

Best of luck to Jamie and the Cancer Care Navigator team at the awards!

Success for COVID-19 Vaccination Programme in Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin The vaccination programme continues to be successfully delivered across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin with the area one of the top places in the Midlands for the number of people vaccinated.

As of 22 July 2021, 645,970 vaccine doses (including second doses) had been given. The percentage of adults that have received at least one dose is broken down by age group below:

Over the past week the mobile vaccination bus, “Bob the Bus”, has attended the Muller site in Ellesmere to vaccinate its workforce and there are plans for further visits in the near future.

Vaccinations are also being offered at community locations in areas of low uptake including Hub on the Hill food bank in Sutton Hill, Telford; Barnabus Community Church food bank in Shrewsbury and at the Windrush Generation Family Celebratory event in Hadley, Telford. The mobile vaccination clinics will continue in areas of low uptake to make access to the vaccine as easy as possible. The team have been running a number of walk-in vaccination clinics which you can read more about here.

Planning for phase 3 of the vaccination programme, including the delivery of booster vaccinations and vaccinations for certain groups of under 18s, continues. Work is being done with local primary care networks and community pharmacies to agree the locations of these vaccines and more details will be provided in due course.

Finally, a huge congratulations to the programme for winning the Community Support and Fundraising Award at the recent SaTH Awards in recognition of the work vaccinating the local population.

Going the Extra Mile!

Information Governance Manager Mick Hillman is going the extra mile (over 300 of them, in fact) to raise money for Cure Leukaemia in September, by taking part in the London 2 Paris cycle ride.

Mick is hoping to raise £1,400 for the Charity, which he was affiliated with in a previous role.

He’s also been motivated to take part in the challenge after a former colleague’s husband passed away from Leukaemia.

The impressive road event takes place over four days and spans over 300 miles - beginning in Grenwich Park, London before heading into France via the Eurotunnel.

Over the coming weeks we are celebrating South Asian Heritage Month which seeks to raise the profile of British South Asian heritage and history in the UK through education, arts, culture and commemoration, with the goal of helping people to better understand the diversity of present-day Britain and improve social cohesion across the country.

The Race Equality & Inclusion Network will be dedicating their meeting on 26 August to celebrating South Asian Heritage Month. This Network is open for all staff to attend. At SaTH your wellbeing matters and that’s why we all need to take some time to consider t factors which have an impact on our wellbeing.

The COVID-19 crisis has affected us all, whether this is within our personal life or at work. This is why this week we’ve launched Wellbeing Wednesdays. Each Wednesday we will be touching on different topic ranging from exercise, nutrition, sleep, financial advice and mindfulness. You will be able to find useful tips, resources and we will also be arranging some online sessions.

Each Wednesday our staff wellbeing team will be walking round our two hospitals to speak to you ask how you are feeling and what we can do to support you and to promote the importance of looking after ourselves. They will be in their purple wellbeing t-shirts so do look out for them – the are there to help you.

These sessions will be facilitated by Team Prevent and are available for all staff to attend. To boo please email l.westcott@nhs.net and you will be sent a link for the session.

As part of Wellbeing Wednesday, we’ve created a Wellbeing Wheel which is intended to help yo think about your wellbeing and lifestyle. We encourage all staff to work with a trusted colleague or line manager to complete the Wellbeing Wheel and to develop a Wellbeing Action Plan which you should review regularly. This booklet also outlines the support available from SaTH to help improv and enhance your wellbeing.

Long COVID support As part of our Wellbeing Wednesday’s we are pleased to launch our full Long COVID Support package for staff and managers. This includes a support group, information booklet, manager’s guidance to support staff with long COVID and a breathing techniques video created by our Physiotherapists. There is a lot of research to support the role nature plays in protecting and supporting our mental health. Nature is all around us whether it be in a garden, outside our office window, a local park or on daily walks. We are very lucky at SaTH with the surroundings we have, therefore we have put together these walking route maps and a list of common wildlife for you to enjoy on your own or with colleagues, friends and family. This could be on your lunch break or maybe schedule in a weekly walk after work in the evening. More info here.

Barclay’s Bank will be delivering seminars on “New to Investing” and “Move or Improve” throughout July 2021 and to ensure these are easily accessible to staff we will be delivering these online as well as streaming at both PRH and RSH sites.

In many situations, having someone to talk to can lighten our load; when we are listened to this helps us to feel valued.

Therefore we have trained a group of staff from across the Trust as Peer to Peer (P2P) Volunteers to help support colleagues. P2P are trained to provide confidential, non-judgmental peer support, signposting to other internal contacts where appropriate. P2P listeners are trained in supportive listening skills but they won’t be acting as counsellors.

The final word...

I felt so overwhelmed and anxious and scared as this was a traumatic birth compared to my previous births, but with her experience, instincts and quick reactions she made sure my baby girl Ronnie was delivered safely. Glen is an absolute credit to the midwife labour team and shows real passion in her job and I hope many new members to the team look up to her and learn from her. Thank you. You kept us safe along the way and this day I will always remember and I’m truly forever grateful for everything you did.
