These awards will highlight the incredible work and dedication made in our fight against COVID-19, and recognise the hard work made by our partners including volunteers and fundraisers.

There is also the Public Recognition Award which, as the name suggests, has been voted for by members of the public.

Colleagues across the Trust were treated to a tea break as SaTH joined NHS Charities Together’s NHS Big Tea. Refreshments were serviced up at the Mytton Restaurant and Ward Block at RSH and at the Apley Restaurant at PRH. For those who were unable to make it to the refreshments, volunteers visited a number of wards and departments to drop of bags of treats.

Parcels were also sent to Queensway, Shrewsbury Business Park, Atcham Business Park and the Severnfields Fertility Centre.

As part of the celebrations, raffle tickets were sold with the chance to win a ‘party in a wheelbarrow’. The winner was Annadurai SaiPrasad, with runner-up prizes going to Trisha Reynolds, Nick John, Jeanette Butler, Lindsey Barker, Simon Pugh, Clare Checketts, Siobhan Kilbane, Kim Humphries, Tracey (in Orthotics), and Angus Mcgregor

Remembering Captain Tom

A garden created to honour Captain Sir Tom Moore at PRH was officially unveiled on Monday.

The unused courtyard has been transformed into a peaceful space for rest and reflection for staff, patients and visitors. It features seating pods, private areas, lighting and flower beds with curved willow fences. It has been named Captain Tom’s Courtyard to recognise his incredible fundraising efforts for the NHS during the pandemic.

The garden was designed by scientist Emma Mayho, who works in the cardio-respiratory department across both sites; and who is also currently studying for her Royal Horticultural Society exams. Emma’s was the winning design in a Shropshire Star competition.

The garden was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Reconomy and a grant from NHS Charities Together, with support from CLC Construction Ltd and the teams in Estates.

For further information about our Values and Behaviours go to SaTH Intranet - PACT: Our Values The Cultural Ambassadors Programme is due to begin on Tuesday 7 September 2021 with the application process closing shortly on Tuesday 20 July.

The programme is open to all staff and is designed to upskill delegates to identify and challenge discrimination and cultural bias in workforce-related processes. This can include recruitment processes, disciplinary processes, formal investigations and grievance hearings involving staff from BAME backgrounds.

Swan Fund reaches £60k A fund set up to benefit patients who are receiving end of life care, and their families, at Shropshire’s two acute hospitals has raised nearly £60,000 since its launch six years ago.

The Swan Fund was set up by Jules Lewis, End of Life Care Facilitator at The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust, which runs the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital (RSH) and Princess Royal Hospital (PRH) in Telford.

Jules launched the Swan Fund in July 2015 with a £500 donation collected at the funeral of her own father, Harold, who died at the RSH. The fund has now grown to nearly £60,000.

The generous donations have come from individuals, families, and organisations and they have helped to fund many improvements – including new Swan Rooms across both hospital sites which provide privacy and dignity for patients who at the end of their life, and their families.

Most recently, the Swan Fund helped to purchase a skylight on ITU at PRH, and soothing mood lights for all wards. The Swan Fund also funds a

Wedding Box which allows staff to plan a hospital wedding for a patient, decorate their room and toast the bride and groom; and there have been two weddings in the last 12 months.

Jules said: “Since 10 July 2015 when I set the Swan Fund up, the fund has raised nearly £60,000. Considering the last 14 months, it is hard to believe that we have managed to raise on average £10,000 a year and we are so grateful to everyone who has donated.

“We have seen a drop in donations over the last 12 months, so this is an incredible amount and I am very proud of all that the End of Life Care team has achieved thanks to such amazing support.”

The fund is also supported by The League of Friends of the RSH and the Friends of PRH through Swan Memory Boxes, which can be used by relatives and loved ones to keep special items.

Rebeccah wins RCM Presidency Joint Staff Side Chair and Royal College of Midwives rep Rebeccah Davies has been elected as the new President of the RCM. Rebeccah brings over 30 years’ clinical midwifery experience to the role and is also a keen RCM Activist.

Last year she was named the Gabby Dowds-Quinn Members’ Champion of the year at the RCM’s Annual Midwifery Awards.

Rebeccah retired from her role as a Labour Ward Co-Ordinator at SaTH last year but has remained in her Staff Side and RCM roles.

At SaTH your wellbeing matters and that’s why we all need to take some time to consider t factors which have an impact on our wellbeing.

The COVID-19 crisis has affected us all, whether this is within our personal life or at work. This is why this week we’ve launched Wellbeing Wednesdays. Each Wednesday we will be touching on different topic ranging from exercise, nutrition, sleep, financial advice and mindfulness. You will be able to find useful tips, resources and we will also be arranging some online sessions.

Each Wednesday our staff wellbeing team will be walking round our two hospitals to speak to you ask how you are feeling and what we can do to support you and to promote the importance of looking after ourselves. They will be in their purple wellbeing t-shirts so do look out for them – the are there to help you.

As part of Wellbeing Wednesday, we’ve created a Wellbeing Wheel which is intended to help you think about your wellbeing and lifestyle. We encourage all staff to work with a trusted colleague or line manager to complete the Wellbeing Wheel and to develop a Wellbeing Action Plan which you should review regularly. This booklet also outlines the support available from SaTH to help improv and enhance your wellbeing.

This includes a support group, information booklet, manager’s guidance to support staff with long COVID and a breathing techniques video created by our Physiotherapists. There is a lot of research to support the role nature plays in protecting and supporting our mental health. Nature is all around us whether it be in a garden, outside our office window, a local park or on daily walks. We are very lucky at SaTH with the surroundings we have, therefore we have put together these walking route maps and a list of common wildlife for you to enjoy on your own or with colleagues, friends and family. This could be on your lunch break or maybe schedule in a weekly walk after work in the evening. More info here.

In many situations, having someone to talk to can lighten our load; when we are listened to this helps us to feel valued.

Therefore we have trained a group of staff from across the Trust as Peer to Peer (P2P) Volunteers to help support colleagues. P2P are trained to provide confidential, non-judgmental peer support, signposting to other internal contacts where appropriate. P2P listeners are trained in supportive listening skills but they won’t be acting as counsellors.
