Celebrating our COVID heroes Colleagues and teams across the Trust have been recognised this week in SaTH’s COVID Hero Awards.

The awards were launched to recognise the efforts of everybody who has gone above and beyond since the start of the pandemic.

During the course of this week, members of the Executive and Senior Leadership teams have been out and about presenting as many COVID Hero certificates as possible.

Louise Barnett, Chief Executive at SaTH, said: “After a year like no other it has been fantastic to celebrate the amazing achievements of so many colleagues throughout COVID Recognition Week.

“I’d like to extend my sincere thanks and huge congratulations to everyone nominated for your tremendous dedication and hard work in caring for all our patients and families within our communities.

“Words cannot express how grateful I am for everything you have done.”

A SaTH doctor who fled wartorn Afghanistan to start a new life in the UK has released his incredible memoir.

“In my memoir, I have recounted my time very fondly with my amazing colleagues at Shrewsbury and Telford hospitals.”

Waheed Arian’s earliest memories are of bombs. Fleeing the conflict with his family, he spent much of his childhood in refugee camps in Pakistan, living sometimes 10 to a room without basic sanitation or access to education.

Publicity for the memoir has seen Waheed interviewed on BBC Breakfast and featured in a number of national newspapers.

After he contracted tuberculosis, his first-hand experience of the power of medicine inspired Waheed, a radiologist, to dedicate his life to healing others.

He came to the UK at 15 and was told he should become a taxi driver. But he had bigger ambitions. Against the odds, he was accepted to read medicine at Cambridge University, Imperial College and Harvard, and went on to become a doctor in the NHS. But he wanted to do more.

In 2015 he founded Arian Teleheal, a global charity that connects doctors in war zones and low-resource countries with

their counterparts in the US, UK, Europe and Australia. Together, learning from each other, they save and change lives.

Waheed, who works in the Emergency Department, said: “"My ambition has always been to become a doctor. First for my family and then to serve Afghanistan and warzones, because there are so many people suffering and they don't have much help.

Forget the Famous Five—meet the Sepsis Six Critical Care nurse and former Sepsis champion for Recovery at RSH, Jess Davies, has created characters to represent the Sepsis Six. Sepsis Six is bundle of six interventions commenced for patients identified at ‘high risk of Sepsis’ to ensure timely intervention to prevent the development of Sepsis - a condition resulting from infection where the body’s immune system goes into overdrive and damages itself which can result in organ failure and sometimes death.

Jess’s characterisations were liked by all who saw them, so with help from Communications web and graphic designer Sam Parker the designs were brought to life - and the characters have been introduced around the Trust

“We are incredibly proud of Jess’s contribution to the Sepsis work and are overwhelmed by her dedication to engaging others.

Student Nurse Gemma Whitehead has been presented with a Golden Ticket.

During her renal placement Gemma has shown exceptional enthusiasm and eagerness to learn all aspects of renal nursing. She has been such a friendly, caring and adaptable student whilst using every opportunity to develop her skills and knowledge. Gemma has had a good rapport with both patients and staff receiving great feedback from both.

Praise also goes out to Gemma's mentors Staff Nurse April Napala and Sister Katie Proctor for being so supportive and sharing their knowledge and experience with her.

Gemma will be joining the renal team as a part-time Dialysis Assistant on the bank as she continues her university studies.

Get up, get dressed, get moving Deconditioning in patients may start within hours of their lying on a trolley or bed.

Up to 65% of older patients experience a decline in function during hospitalisation. For people over the age of 80, 10 days in bed can age muscles by 10 years and one week of bed rest and result in 10% muscle loss. This loss of strength could make the difference between staying independent or needing more help with daily living.

Every little bit of activity can help improve the health and wellbeing of patients. If they are able to, please encourage patients to:  Sit up for all meals, either on their chair or at the edge of their bed  Walk around the ward, either alone or with help  Do gentle exercises throughout the day  Let the ward team know what they are normally able to do so they can make sure care is aimed at returning them to their usual abilities or as near to this as possible.

To support patients in getting up, dressed and moving, please be aware that a laundry service is available to wash patient clothing. All items must be placed inside a clear plastic bag and taken to the linen room between 8am and 2pm (Monday to Friday). See the poster (right) for more information or contact the linen room.

SaTH is considering the installation of Electric Vehicle Charging Points at RSH and PRH, for use by staff and visitors.

The proposed locations are  RSH: Public car park to the left of Mytton Oak House  PRH: Rear car park near to the staff rear entrance off Hospital Street The Trust would like to understand how these charging points might be used.

RSH Staff Nurse for Theatres, Karen Ryan, is retiring after 21 years in the NHS – 11 of those spent at SaTH.

The cost of using them would be set at a commercial rate and would be in addition to usual parking charges.

Karen, who is also the Educational Link Nurse, plans to spend time with her children and grandchildren – but also has plans to return on the Bank. “I really will miss my colleagues and the camaraderie – and making a difference for our patients,” she said.

The Lingen Davies Cancer Fund has launched its summer fundraiser.

The charity wants to encourage everyone to join in with their WimbLDon Watch Party to celebrate the return of the grand slam event after it was cancelled last year.

Wimbledon fortnight runs from Monday, 28 June, and staff at the cancer charity are calling on supporters to get involved by hosting their own COVID-friendly get together.

Lizzy Coleman, Events and Fundraising Officer for Lingen Davies, said: “Everyone is really excited to be able to plan face-to-face events again, and while we must remember to stick to COVID-19 rules and regulations, there’s no reason everyone can’t get involved with the WimbLDon Watch Party.

“We know how many people love the Wimbledon fortnight and as a nation we really missed it last year.

“We’ve created our very own fundraiser around it and hope as many people as possible can get involved. We wanted to do something to get people together again so we’re asking supporters to host a party where friends or family can meet to watch a Wimbledon match, catch up with each other, take some selfies in the dedicated frame and raise cash for us.

“People can sign up through our website and for just £10 they will get a party pack with a novelty selfie frame, themed decorations, sweepstake sheet and more. People can either ask for further donations to attend the party, run a sweepstake, or hold a cake competition, there’s lots of things that are fun and will raise money for us.”

Every penny raised by Lingen Davies Cancer Fund goes directly to supporting local cancer services for the people of Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin and Mid Wales, ensuring they have access to the best possible care, close to home.

The team is out selling raffle tickets for the NHS Birthday Raffle. The prize is a party in a wheelbarrow— and includes the barrow!

Tickets cost £1 or £4 for 5 and, as they say in the National Lottery, you have to be in it to win it.

The draw will take place on 5 July.

Entrants must be over 18 and be a member of staff or a volunteer. You can purchase tickets with cash or card either when you see the teams out and about, or you can visit the SaTH Charity Office – Flat 2 Stretton House, RSH. All funds raised will go to supporting staff through The Small Things Make a Big Difference Fund.

Take-away lockers now available

A focus on Protected Mealtimes was a key part of Hydration and Nutrition Week which has been marked by the Trust throughout the week.

Food Safety Adviser, Shelley Simpson, highlighted the importance of Protected Mealtimes during ward visits at both RSH and PRH on Monday, with RSH Catering Operations Manager Ian Stuart and PRH Catering Operations Manager Kate Teece.

Shelley delivered new Protected Mealtime Coordinator badges, along with the Aide Memoire and Code of Practice, to ward colleagues; and random checks were also carried out to ensure the MUST (Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool) score had been completed.

The aim of Protected Mealtimes is:  To provide a calm and peaceful environment conducive to the enjoyment of a meal on the ward allowing patients to eat their meals without disruption  To ensure that patient mealtimes, and the importance of nutritional and hydration care, are respected across the organisation  To focus ward activities into the service of food and providing patients with assistance at mealtimes  To increase the understanding of all staff, patients and visitors on the importance of mealtimes as part of care and treatment for patients Shelley said: “The role of the Protected Mealtime Coordinator is important and the new badges will help them feel empowered to be in charge of the mealtime and to be the main contact for the Host/ Hostess.”

There was a focus on the refresh of the IDDSI terminology, thickener safety and yellow signs for specific patient advice led by Emily Davies, Therapy Operational Manager for Speech and Language Therapy on Tuesday.

On Wednesday inpatients received cakes, organised by the Catering Team as part of a global afternoon tea party to celebrate Hydration and Nutrition Week, to have with their afternoon drink. Today, look out for colleagues from the Quality Team who will be on their walkabouts at both PRH and RSH with educational stands and a treat for staff.

A group of newly qualified nurses have identified the need to review how fluid balance charts are completed.

Aravind Bhaskaran Ashmi Shibu, Brittany Williams, Aleena Raju, Jodie Harvey and Alice Taylor have come up with a questionnaire, which has been launched during Nutrition and Hydration Week The Fluid Balance Preceptorship Questionnaires are being delivered to all wards and departments during this week with an addressed envelope attached.

Mark Brandreth has been appointed Interim Accountable Officer for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Group.

Mark has already been working as Executive Lead for the Integrated Care System over recent months. He will remain in this position.

As a result, Mark is stepping down from his role as Chief Executive of The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, a post he has held for the past five years.

Mark has been appointed to the AO post following a rigorous and competitive recruitment process, where he showed himself to be the outstanding candidate. He will officially take up his new joint role on Monday 2 August.

Mark said: ““Working with colleague in recent months, I have seen the passion and the desire to do things differently so that he we can improve health outcomes and health inequalities for all of our population.

“I am confident that we are on the right track, and I look forward to leading our fledgling organisation as we work towards becoming a new statutory body from April next year.”

In many situations, having someone to talk to can lighten our load; when we are listened to this helps us to feel valued.

Therefore we have trained a group of staff from across the Trust as Peer to Peer (P2P) Volunteers to help support colleagues. P2P are trained to provide confidential, non-judgmental peer support, signposting to other internal contacts where appropriate. P2P listeners are trained in supportive listening skills but they won’t be acting as counsellors.

The final word...

I had to contact you to express my gratitude and thanks for the way I was treated on my visit to your endoscopy unit.

The stuff we have to take at home before the procedure was disgusting and I set out with some trepidation and was very unsure of myself and what I was about to face. The staff were welcoming and pleasant and the paperwork was done.

I went into the operating room and was welcomed by a team of three ladies. I was informed of what was going to happen and made comfortable.

The youngest member of the team showed me how to use the Entonox machine and operations commenced. I found that I was not using the Entonox as I was having a conversation with the team members and did not need it. I was watching it all on the monitor and the lady in charge was explaining things to me from time to time and answering any questions I had. I felt safe all the way through the procedure and all I had was a small amount of pressure sensation inside me from time to time. The team of 3 young ladies were chatty and I was treated very gently and with dignity and respect. I wish to thank them very much indeed. The staff in the recovery room were also excellent people and we chatted and had a laugh.

This was my second time in your Telford Hospital. The first time you saved my life.

Thank you ALL at Telford. Excellent job well done.
