Kind donation by patient as a “Thank You”
The Sky is the Limit for Debbie! Good luck to Debbie Snooke, who is doing her third sky dive in September to raise money for our hospitals! Debbie, an End of Life Care Specialist Nurse, is raising money for the Swan End of Life Care Fund and the Maternity Bereavement fund. To sponsor, please visit Debbie’s Just Giving page.
A patient who was treated at PRH has kindly donated a picture to say thank you to the staff for the care he received at the hospital. Mr Bird has donated a picture to the MRI scanning suite at PRH (pictured above with Shireen Mitcham, MRI Superintendent Radiographer). He praised the care that he received by all of the teams that he was in contact with during his stay, and wanted to show his gratitude by improving on the experience for future patients. The picture is to be placed on the wall in the scan room so patients can look at it during their scan, which Mr Bird hopes will be of benefit to both patients and staff. This gift and the positive feedback was greatly appreciated by the Radiology team.

Alongside the Guardians; FTSU at SaTH have a team of ambassadors who assist with promoting FTSU and signposting people who have concerns they need to raise. Our ambassadors do this alongside their substantive posts and all must undertake training through the National Guardians Office and Health Education England. Over the coming months we’ll be introducing our ambassadors so you can get to know them better...
Hello…my name is Hannah I was inspired to become an ambassador because I am lucky to be in a role where we develop many relationships across the Trust and it gives me the opportunity to support others. The ambassador role enables me to be able to provide valuable information and signposting to a FTSU Guardian wherever necessary. From a personal view, being an ambassador allows me to develop my knowledge on a critical topic whilst not limiting or affecting my capacity in my substantive position.
Thank you Hannah for being a great Ambassador for FTSU. Hannah can be contacted at Hannah.furness@nhs.net Contact the Guardians at sath.ftsu@nhs.net
Celebrating South Asian History Month
Celebrations for South Asian History Month finished off on a very special note last week. Jas Smith, Race Equality and Inclusion Network Chair, organised the day of celebrations and said “In celebrating the National South Asian Heritage Month campaign, which runs every year, we organised an event to mark this month. “There were two displays at each site in August, manned by members of the Race Equality & Inclusion Network, which showcased many Asian traditions and costumes. Staff who visited the displays were given some insight and awareness to what South Asian Heritage month means to people in the Trust. “Indian sweets were distributed and both our canteens offered some wonderful Asian food for our staff to enjoy on this day, and all this was very gratefully received by our staff. “The Race Equality & Inclusion Network also dedicated their normal network meeting to this cause, where videos of our international nurses were shared and also some bhangra dancing took place at the end of the meeting. The event received some very positive feedback from staff and staff were pleased to be included and enjoyed learning about the history and different cultures.” If you’d like to know more about the Networks, you can visit the Staff Network Intranet page.

Rebecca takes the lead as Head of Occupational Therapy On the Buses! With the introduction of the X4 Service running between our Hospitals, here’s all the info you may need… Bus Fares
After 22 years in the Trust, Amanda Walshaw is handing over the reins of the Professional Head of Occupational Therapy (OT) role to Rebecca Martin. Amanda has expressed a wish to hand over this role in advance of her forthcoming retirement in November so that she has time to support the new post-holder and ensure a smooth transition. Dianne Lloyd, Therapy Centre manager said “I have always highly valued Amanda’s professional leadership and I am extremely grateful to Amanda for supporting Rebecca as she takes up this new challenge.” “I am absolutely delighted to welcome Rebecca into the Therapy Centre Management Team in the role of Professional Head of Occupational Therapy and I am sure she will be a great voice for the profession and provide sound professional advice and guidance to our Occupational Therapy staff along with driving forwards the agenda to improve the quality and safety of patient care. Rebecca has been an Occupational Therapist for more than 14 years and has a wealth of experience regarding our services to bring to this role.” Prior to joining SaTH, Rebecca worked in social services so she also has a broad understanding of community services. One of the early priorities for Rebecca will be to help shape the future strategic direction for the OT profession both within SaTH and to influence the new AHP strategy for Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin which is currently being developed by the AHP Council. Congratulations to Rebecca, and our very best wishes to Amanda as she prepares for retirement.

At SaTH your wellbeing matters and that’s why we all need to take some time to consider t factors which have an impact on our wellbeing.
The COVID-19 crisis has affected us all, whether this is within our personal life or at work. This is why this week we’ve launched Wellbeing Wednesdays. Each Wednesday we will be touching on different topic ranging from exercise, nutrition, sleep, financial advice and mindfulness. You will be able to find useful tips, resources and we will also be arranging some online sessions.
Each Wednesday our staff wellbeing team will be walking round our two hospitals to speak to you ask how you are feeling and what we can do to support you and to promote the importance of looking after ourselves. They will be in their purple wellbeing t-shirts so do look out for them – the are there to help you.
To find out more about the weekly activities, please look out for detail in the weekly staff informati bulletin and notifications from the staff app.
These sessions will be facilitated by Team Prevent and are available for all staff to attend. To boo please email l.westcott@nhs.net and you will be sent a link for the session.
As part of Wellbeing Wednesday, we’ve created a Wellbeing Wheel which is intended to help yo think about your wellbeing and lifestyle. We encourage all staff to work with a trusted colleague or line manager to complete the Wellbeing Wheel and to develop a Wellbeing Action Plan which you should review regularly. This booklet also outlines the support available from SaTH to help improv and enhance your wellbeing.

There is a lot of research to support the role nature plays in protecting and supporting our mental health. Nature is all around us whether it be in a garden, outside our office window, a local park or on daily walks. We are very lucky at SaTH with the surroundings we have, therefore we have put together these walking route maps and a list of common wildlife for you to enjoy on your own or with colleagues, friends and family. This could be on your lunch break or maybe schedule in a weekly walk after work in the evening. More info here.

In many situations, having someone to talk to can lighten our load; when we are listened to this helps us to feel valued. Therefore we have trained a group of staff from across the Trust as Peer to Peer (P2P) Volunteers to help support colleagues. P2P are trained to provide confidential, non-judgmental peer support, signposting to other internal contacts where appropriate. P2P listeners are trained in supportive listening skills but they won’t be acting as counsellors.
