SaTH wins research award Research teams from SaTH, The Midlands Partnership, Shropshire Community Health Trust and the Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital have been recognised for their collaborative work on a national coronavirus study and vaccine trial.

The award from the Clinical Research Network West Midlands (CRN) is for the trusts’ joint efforts to support the Public Health England study called SIREN and the Novavax vaccine trial.

The SIREN study is looking at whether healthcare workers who are identified as having previously had cornavirus are protected from future episodes of infection.

The findings from the year-long study will be used to help understand the future impact of coronavirus on the population.

Since the SIREN study started in September this year, 570 patient facing staff from across the trusts have volunteered to take part, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and support staff. ď ąContinued on Page 5

Covered areas have now been put up in the Ward 31/32 courtyard at RSH and the Boningale courtyard at PRH. We have sourced some heaters for these and the areas are now ready for you to use.

All the profits will be split between Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust Charity and NHS Charities Together, of which SaTH is a member. The Choir has recorded a new version of Bieber’s ‘Holy’, which will be available to download from today. We’d be really grateful if you could share this using the hashtag #NHSBieber4XmasNo1 and tagging in @NHSCharities and @LG_NHS as we will benefit from money raised.

Thanks to the efforts of our catering team, our volunteers will be delivering 6,000 chocolate reindeers next week – this includes colleagues at both hospital sites, Atcham, Queensway, Severn Fields and Douglas Court.

Finally, for those of you keen to work off all the excesses of the Christmas period the outdoor gym has been reinstalled at RSH (at the back of the dining room by the loading bay) so you can get fresh air and exercise at the same time. The outdoor gym at PRH is still by the accommodation houses.

Research award From Page 1 Colleagues have spoken of their joy after winning a research award for studies into coronavirus.

Mandy Carnahan, Lead Research Nurse SaTH, said: “We are proud to be part of this unique collaborative approach. This achievement has been possible by the willingness of research staff but also staff who have given up their time to participate in this important trial.”

Dave Evans, Joint Accountable Officer at Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin CCGs, said: “This is great recognition for the teams and for the NHS staff who are giving up their time to take part in this research to benefit patients. Thank you to everyone involved.”

Dr Jane Povey, Medical Director at Shropshire Community Health NHS Trust, said: “One thing the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us is that we cannot beat it unless we all work together. Our research teams have demonstrated just this, by joining together to implement this important study across the four trusts. We are delighted that their hard work has been formally recognised.”

Ruth Lambley-Burke, Head of Research & Innovation and Senior Manager Medical Directorate at Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are proud to be working in partnership on this important research and thrilled that our work on the Novavax COVID-19 study, and support to the SIREN project has been recognised by the CRN West Midlands.”

Two more student nurses have been presented with Golden Tickets, sealing their positions at SaTH. The Paediatric Ward presented Taylor Turnball (main picture) with its first ever Golden Ticket.

Her colleagues described her as an “outstanding student” who provides “gold standard care to the patients and families and is a joy to work with”.

Meanwhile, Rosie Stewart (inset) received a Golden Ticket Ruth Longfellow, Consultant Anaesthetist and Associate Medical from sister Gill Lythgoe on AMU Director, and Teresa Jones, Research Manager at The Robert Jones and at PRH. Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital, added: “The SIREN study has been a fantastic opportunity to demonstrate how, across our local health system, we can all work together incredibly effectively to achieve the same common goal – and this award is absolutely testament to that.

“We’re proud of everybody from across the health and care system who has worked hard on the SIREN Study and we look forward to working together to deliver more studies in the future.”

Radiotherapy Team is taken to task Inspired by the BAFTA-winning Channel 4 show, Taskmaster, Technical Superintendent Bernadette Mortiboy has come up with a novel way to say thank you to the Radiotherapy Team for their tireless work this year by creating an interactive Taskmaster advent calendar and enlisting the help of the show’s creator and star Alex Horne to deliver a task.

Each morning during December, at morning huddle, Tasks have been given to the Radiotherapy team with points awarded each day to the both teams and individuals who come up with the best responses. This week, Alex Horne joined in the fun by handing out a task by video message and saying thank you to the team for everything that they’re doing.

Bernadette said, “The whole radiotherapy team has worked so hard this year especially throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. 2020 has been difficult for so many of us and the Superintendents and Manger wanted to end the year on a lighter note. We had to think of something that would be a bit of a challenge but also fun and the team are loving the Taskmaster challenge!

There are a variety of tasks some practical, some artistic and some just plain silly. The first task on 1 December was “put as many things starting with P in a urine bottle”. There was a lot of imaginative Ps in there but the winners had more than 140 things in a urine bottle and that’s without counting

the pepper corns or Post-It notes!”

“There is a real buzz in department that is raising everyone’s spirits which is fantastic to see after such as hard year and we were so thrilled with the personal message sent to us by Alex Horne this week, when he read out one of our challenges.”

Take-away lockers now available

With a little help from our Friends The League of Friends of RSH has raised £3,250 from its Christmas Draw - with every penny raised going towards funding vital equipment for the hospital.

Susan Hurdiss, League of Friends Organising Secretary, said: “We are most grateful to the High Sheriff, Dean Harris for kindly giving her time and to pick out the four lucky winners in this year’s Christmas Draw.

“The response has been incredible and has raised more money than last year, which has included many generous donations. On behalf of the Friends, I would like to express a huge thanks to everyone who continues to give their support.”

Julia Clarke, Director of Corporate Services, said: “We are incredibly grateful for all the fantastic support that we receive from The League of Friends, now more than ever, as we continue to work our way through this pandemic.

“Every year their donations make a huge difference and enable us to purchase additional medical equipment that we would be unable to fund ourselves, for the benefit of our patients. This has recently included portable monitoring modules for patients in our Critical Care Unit, bladder scanners and specialist equipment for the Urology department. Thank you to everyone who bought a raffle ticket.”

Executive Chairman of the League of Friends, Richard Lawn, pictured with the High Sherriff, said: “COVID has brought many challenges for the Friends this year, particularly in terms of cancelled fundraising events and the closure of most of our shops at RSH; however we are very proud that we kept one of the shops open throughout lockdown, serving takeaway and essentials to staff and manned by a few hardworking staff and volunteers.

More of our shops are open now and we have still managed some fundraising.

“Most importantly, even though our reserves have been depleted we have continued to donate vital equipment to the Trust which has all helped to improve patient care and save more lives.”

Patients and staff were treated to the unusual sight of a steam engine visiting RSH last week.

‘The Burrell’ engine made a special trip to drop off a cheque for £800.

Every year Shrewsbury Steam Rally committee organises a commemorative mug to celebrate the annual event at Onslow, near Shrewsbury. This year they were unable to host the event but decided they would still produce a commemorative mug with the proceeds coming to SaTH. Julia Clarke, Director of Corporate Services (right), received the cheque from Edward Goddard the Chairman of the Shrewsbury Steam Rally.

Julia said: “It is a wonderful donation, and the sight of The Burrell engine was really uplifting to everyone at the Trust, as well as knowing we have so much support from our community.

“As this was a donation to SaTH Charity every last penny will be spent on patients and staff.”

Peer-to-peer listeners In many situations, having someone to talk to can lighten our load; when we are listened to this helps us to feel valued.

Therefore we have trained a group of staff from across the Trust as Peer to Peer (P2P) Volunteers to help support colleagues. P2P are trained to provide confidential, non-judgmental peer support, signposting to other internal contacts where appropriate.

P2P listeners are trained in supportive listening skills but they won’t be acting as counsellors.
