Awards recognition for Claire An Advanced Clinical Practitioner has been named runner-up in a prestigious patient experience award, for a research project she completed to improve the triage of paediatric patients into the Children’s Assessment Unit at PRH. Claire Fenn, ACP for Paediatrics, was Highly Commended in the Patient Experience Network National Awards (PENNA), for a research project she conducted while studying at Liverpool John Moores University. She was one of six people shortlisted in the ‘Transformer of Tomorrow’ category, which judges research projects designed to improve patient experience in the future.

Claire said: “I'm absolutely thrilled. It was such an honour to have been nominated by Liverpool John Moores University, then to be shortlisted and finally receive runner up and highly commended for my work was amazing.” Continues on Page 7

Here to help and support our staff at the hardest of times A Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide Staff Support Group has been set up at SaTH. The the first support session will take place on Friday 30 October from 4-5pm in Syndicate Room 9 at the Shropshire Conference Centre (SECC) at RSH. Due to social distancing guidance, the team needs to know who will be attending and will arrange more sessions and other venues as required. Jules said: “The bravest thing you can do is to ask for help. Please get the support you need if you have had your heart broken by the death of a loved one, friend or colleague by suicide.

“Talking is good. Talk more, share more and if we can help one person it will be worth it.

“Someone you know may need help and may not have not seen this, so please share. Anyone and everyone can make a difference to supporting someone at the hardest of times.

Jude Evans, a Ward Clerk on Ward 22 at RSH, has designed table mats for patients which contain health and safety advice, ward contact details and ward staff identification.

Jude came up with the idea to create a placemat with useful information for patients and their relatives, to eliminate additonal paperwork and signage that is not needed around bed spaces.

Jude, pictured right with Hayley Flavell, Director of Nursing, said: “I noticed other hospitals using something similar, that's where I got the idea. I knew I could adapt it to meet the needs of our wards, so I spoke to our medical photographer, Ian Roth. He’s been very supportive and helped develop the concept. We talked extensively about design including infection control and dementiafriendly concepts.

“The pandemic put a brief stop to the project as movements of wards made it more difficult to execute. After working closely with the IPC team to ensure they are suitable, I’m so pleased to now be able to roll it out on our ward. And I hope that in the future other departments will be able to use the mats too.”

Pab Hnatiuk, Ward Manager on Ward 22, said: “Jude’s table mats are a brilliant idea. She has worked hard, in her own time, to make this excellent innovation work and turn her idea into reality.”

Claire was runner up and highly commended for a research project to improve triage of patients into the Children’s Assessment Unit.

She said: “By appraising the consistency and compliance of triage assessments within the Children’s Assessment Unit, I found many areas of good practice, and as expected with any clinical audit I also found areas for improvement.

Freedom to Speak Up Month This week marks the start of Freedom to Speak Up Month, something SaTH takes very seriously as part of its commitment to making the Trust a great place to work. To celebrate the month, we asked our Freedom to Speak Up Advocates what Freedom to Speak Up means to them. Here’s what they had to say: 1) Shymon Augustian, Nurse: I see FTSU as a window for me to access when I come across any issue in the field of work as I get settled in. As I'm in a process of relocation, I struggle with many things due to the difference in culture, climate, the way of work, language etc.

FTSU is available for all and for any such issues. I wish the nurses in my country had a such an option to raise their concerns. The people, especially those who have recently moved here, desperately require a helping hand. Here, I believe FTSU can do a lot.

6) Betty Lodge, Head of Nursing, Emergency Centre:

I am passionate about creating a culture of openness and honesty within our organisation. The Freedom to Speak Up team make a real difference to both colleagues and patients. It is vital that we develop a more open and supportive culture that encourages staff to speak up about any issues related to patient care, quality or safety. Speaking up, for me, is about being supported to 'speak up' about anything that gets in the way of providing good care or gets in the way of a good day at work.

Freedom to Speak Up means being there for someone when they feel they have nowhere else to turn. By supporting colleagues to speak up, we can ensure our workplace is fair, inclusive and accessible to everyone who works here and accesses it’s services.

4) Kayleigh Williams, International Nursing Team Facilitator : FTSU Provides a platform for having conversations about safety, wellbeing and practice, I think it’s vital that we are all given the opportunity to question something we are unsure of and channel the right questions through the right people. Being able to speak to someone in confidence, who is a neutral party, plays a big part in FTSU, and I believe that by encouraging colleagues to speak up about any issues , we can become a trust that embodies FTSU as a normal part of our culture at SaTH. 5) Jenni Rose, Complaints Case Manager: Freedom to Speak Up for me is about promoting a culture of staff being able to raise concerns that they have with the aim of improving the culture within the organisation.

9) Rehab Haider , Year 2 Internal Medicine Training As health care professionals we all want to provide our patients with the best possible care. Freedom to Speak Up means being able to voice concerns without the fear of repercussions on employment or training. I know it's not easy, but it's the RIGHT thing to do.

Randomised Coffee Trial Randomised Coffee Trials (RCTs) are a well-used way to meet people across an organisation and find out more about them.

They can help to give you a better idea of what goes on in other teams, and what their challenges are. It’s an easy way to meet new people, build relationships, share learning and build community.

In these times, they can also be a good way to promote your own mental wellbeing, talk about how you’re feeling, and feel more connected.

SaTH Libraries ran a successful Randomised Coffee Trial last November, and a virtual one in the spring, and the feedback was really positive with people learning new things and making new connections across the Trust.

This year will be a little different and instead of meeting face to face, we’re encouraging ‘virtual’ meetings. This could be as simple as a phone call, or you may want to try a video call if that suits you both. So, grab a hot drink and get talking!

Simply send your details to sara.pritchard2@nhs.net and you’ll be randomly matched with someone. You’ll then arrange to meet virtually with them for half an hour over a coffee (or any other hot drink) during November. What you talk about is up to you, and it doesn’t need to be work-related.

We’ll be in touch in the next couple of weeks to let you know who we’ve matched you up with so you can make contact, and we’ll follow up in December to ask how it went.

No London?

No problem Colleagues from Team SaTH have taken part in the London Marathon...without stepping foot out of Shropshire.

Last Sunday thousands of runners throughout the UK and around the globe took part in the virtual London Marathon, when they were given 24 hours to complete the 26.2 miles that make up the marathon distance.

Among the runners were doctors Ed Rysdale and Caroline Jones.

Ed ran to raise money for Children with Cancer UK and surpassed his £2,000 target.

Caroline (right, bottom), who works in AMU, described her experience as “absolutely amazing”.

To support delivery of the Trust’s Quality Improvement Plan, we have welcomed a new Improvement Team, supported through funding from NHS England and NHS Improvement.

The team will report to Executive Directors, overseen by the Trust Improvement Director. This team will support the delivery of the key objectives within our ‘Getting to Good’ programme, while coaching and developing staff to deliver sustained change.

Dawn’s £3k fundraiser Dawn Williams, Senior Sister in ED at RSH, co-ordinated a fund raising initiative with the community of Kerry, near Newtown, raising just over £3,000 for SaTH. At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic Dawn, along with friend Andrew Billington, launched a fundraising campaign to help provide visors for medical staff.

They were overwhelmed with donations and after demand for the visors decreased, Dawn and Andrew were able to give the rest of the money to the Trust to help improve services in ED. Dawn was asked by friends and neighbours in Kerry how they could help as the pandemic took hold. With PPE supplies being top of the list, IT Technician Andrew Billington started making visors to donate to frontline medical staff in Newtown, Montgomery and Shrewsbury.

Dawn and Andrew set up a JustGiving page for the community to donate money to cover the costs of printing and materials. The generous donations from the villagers far exceeded their expectations.

The ‘Getting to Good’ plan will form a significant part of the Trust’s objectives for the next three years and is supported by our local health and care partners and through our Improvement Alliance.

Work streams will be linked directly to objectives that have been agreed by the Trust for 2020/21 and led by an Executive Director sponsor.

The focus will be on ensuring that the changes fully address root causes, are sustainable with tangible outcome measures and put in place the foundations for future success.

The content for the work streams are now being finalised.

It will cover what menopause is, its symptoms, ways of managing them, thinking about long-term health and what support and help is out there and where to find it. There will also be an anonymous Q&A throughout the session.

Black History Month

Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin Sustainability and Transformation Parnership (STP) will be hosting a special event next week as part of Black History Month.

The event will take place on Thursday, 15 October from 6.30pm – 8:30pm via Microsoft Teams.

Speakers for the event will be Dr Emezie Okorocha, Hannah Adjepong and Patrick Vernon OBE. Patrick (above left) is a Clore and Winston Churchill Fellow, a Fellow at the Imperial War Museum, a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and a former associate Fellow for the Department of the History of Medicine at Warwick University. He was awarded an OBE in 2012 for his work in tackling health inequalities for ethnic minority communities in Britain. Since 2010 he has been leading the campaign for Windrush Day and in 2018 kick-started the campaign for an amnesty for the Windrush Generation.

Emezie (above right) is currently a Junior Fellow doctor in Cardiothoracic surgery. She is a co-founder of the National charitable organisation, African Caribbean Medical Association (ACMA) UK and the founder of ACMA Southern Doctors Network - a formally affiliated group of ACMA. Both organisations aim to support and network black medical students and doctors and work to bring structural equity in the NHS and the wider community. In her spare time, she joins three others to host a podcast series called Doctors Don't Talk, where they talk about life as junior doctors, giving perspectives that are hardly talked about.

Hannah (above, centre) was born in Krenkuase, a small village in Ghana and has worked in this country as a nurse and midwife for over 20 years. Whilst working in a nursing home a visit to an old lady inspired her to capture her thoughts on paper in the form of a poem. Hannah has since gone on to become a prolific writer with much of her work published. She says that poetry helps her to cope. It is like having a conversation with a friend and in this case the paper is the friend. She pours her feelings and her thoughts onto the paper.
