“We truly hope this money can benefit SaTH and specifically those departments supporting cancer and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) patients.

Plastic Free July is a global movement that helps millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution.

The plastic free July challenge encourages consumers to stop (or at the least reduce) the purchase of single-use plastic for the month.

Here are a few of the things SaTH’s been working on to reduce the use of single use plastics: 

Our Catering Department signed up to the NHS Plastics Pledge and has already removed plastic straws, cutlery and polystyrene take-away containers from the catering outlets. We have saved an estimated 225,000 single–use plastic cutlery items alone.



RSH catering outlets introduced the Shrewsbury Cup (a reusable cup that works on a £1 deposit) in February 2020 which went really well. This is, sadly, on hold at present due to COVID19 but it is hoped we will be able to offer this later in the year and also introduce something similar at PRH.

Energy contract In April, the Trust moved to a new energy contract for electricity and gas, meaning all our electric is now from renewable sources. This will reduce our emissions of CO2 by approximately 3,000 tonnes every year.

LED lighting The installation of new energy efficient LED lighting at RSH is well under way, with scheduled completion in October. This will reduce our energy usage, cost and CO2 emissions, as well as reducing our maintenance costs and stop the disposal of hazardous fluorescent tubes.

Recycling Our domestic waste contract is a zero-to-landfill system, with the majority of waste being processed at the local waste-to-energy plant in Battlefield, Shrewsbury, where it is used to produce electricity.

WarpIT We have a very successful furniture recycling scheme called WarpIT, which has saved the Trust approximately ÂŁ35,000 and diverted a lot of perfectly good furniture from landfill disposal. Our thanks to various external organisations for their generous donations.
