Behind the scenes tours
To mark Healthcare Science Week – the Radiotherapy Physics department is offering staff the chance to have a behind-the-scenes look. The one-hour tours of Radiotherapy Physics at RSH will take place on Wednesday 11 March at 2pm, 2.30pm and 3pm. To book onto the tours, please go to the learning zone and sign up. Places are limited. There will also be a stall outside the Mytton Restaurant at RSH on Tuesday 10 March - between 12noon and 2pm showcasing the work of Radiotherapy Physics. All staff are invited to go along and see what goes on in Radiotherapy.
Nina calls on colleagues to don their best hats A colleague is calling on staff to wear a hat for the day next month to raise money for Brain Tumour Research. Nina Sinclair, Coroner's and Security Administration Officer, is calling on staff to donate money to support the charity's Wear a Hat Day on 27 March, as the culmination of Brain Tumour Awareness Month. Nina’s husband, David, was diagnosed with a low grade brain tumour in 2013, 14 years after his first seizure. His seizures still subsist to this day. He is currently undergoing treatment for a recurrent tumour (anaplastic pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma). Nina said: “I’m hoping as many people as possible will join in with Wear a Hat day and donate so that vital research can be funded and we can work towards a cure. “I know that not everyone can wear a hat in their day job—but there’s nothing to stop you from wearing one to and from work! “I have set up an online donation page which can be found at www.justgiving.com/NSinclair2020 “If people don't want to donate to me personally, they can text the word HAT to 70450 to donate £5.” Wear a Hat Day is one of the UK’s biggest and most important brain tumour research fundraising and awareness-raising days. The idea is that wearing a hat is not only “fashionable, stylish and fun”, but it also draws attention to the head and brain tumours, a devastating and at times “invisible disease”. The first Wear a Hat Day was in 2010. In 2019, Wear a Hat Day raised over £330,000 for vital and pioneering research. Since 2010, it has raised over £1.5 million. Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer. Brain Tumour Research is uniquely focused on funding sustainable and long-term research into brain tumours at dedicated UK Research Centres. The Charity is building a network of researchers and developing the next generation of world-class experts in neuro-oncology. The charity is also influencing the Government and larger cancer charities to invest more nationally into this crucial area of medical research. It is campaigning for investment in brain tumour research to reach £35 million per year, in line with breast cancer and leukaemia. The charity works to understand the origins of brain tumours in order to create personalised treatments for each patient; starve cancer cells of the energy they need to grow and expand; repurpose existing drugs in order to increase options for targeting brain tumours and identify mutations in low-grade brain tumours that dangerously accelerate tumour growth.

You can enter the lottery by downloading a lottery entry form here. Alternatively, you can collect/request a form from the SaTH Charity office. Completed forms should be returned to sath.charity@nhs.net or the SaTH Charity Office (Suite 2, Stretton House, RSH). Providing entries are made by the end of a calendar month, deductions will be made from the subsequent month’s payroll, and you will be entered into the following month’s draw. For example, if you submit an entry form in October, payroll deductions occur in November, and you will be entered into the December draw. Your number(s) are automatically allocated and go forward into each month’s prize draw.
How much do tickets cost? Tickets cost £1 and a maximum of 5 tickets can be purchased. Payment will be deducted from your salary (a minimum of £1 per month to a maximum of £5 per month). It is the responsibility of each employee to check that deductions are accurate.
The remaining 50% of the money will go into the Small Things Makes a Big Difference Fund. There may be a one-off “super draw” every year with larger cash prizes. This will replace one of the monthly draws and will be publicised in advance of the draw date. When are the draws made? The draw will take place on the second Wednesday of each month. The winners will be announced in Chatterbox that week. NOTE: To be in the first draw in July a completed application form must be submitted in May. Can I enter the new Staff Lottery? The Staff Lottery is open to all staff working at SaTH who have regular contracted hours and are on the Trust’s payroll. How is money from the Fund awarded? A panel will award the money monthly in line with income to the Fund. They will meet on: 9 May, 11 June, 9 July, 13 August, 3 September, 8 October, 12 November and 10 December.

A prize pool will be created by the monthly contributions to the lottery. The greater the number of players, the bigger the cash prizes and funds raised for staff benefit.
