How The Salvation Army helps at Christmas
The Salvation Army in the UK & Ireland demonstrates Christian principles through practical support offering unconditional friendship and help to people of all ages, backgrounds and needs. With many people in our communities unable to afford life’s basics, The Salvation Army is working to bring some comfort and joy to the people most in need this Christmas. Here are just some of the ways our church and charity will be helping people over the colder months and the Christmas period:
• As temperatures drops, The Salvation Army’s emergency provision offers people a safe, warm alternative to a night on the streets.
• Hundreds of cooked Christmas dinners will be served for people who would otherwise go without, whether a family living in B&B accommodation with no access to an oven, or people who are forced to live on the streets. Last year, The Salvation Army provided more than 5,500 cooked Christmas meals to people in their local communities.
• Food parcels are prepared at many of our churches and centres to help families and individuals who are forced to make the choice whether to heat or eat in their own home.
• Throughout the UK, our churches and centres will bring people together at Christmas time, through singing groups for people who have dementia, community cafes open to all, parent and toddler groups, wellbeing clubs and volunteering opportunities for people who might otherwise be alone and isolated.
• The Salvation Army’s Christmas Present Appeal brings the joy of Christmas to the children who would otherwise go without.
The gifts are provided to low-income families who cannot put food on the table, heat their homes or pay their bills. Last year, The Salvation Army distributed more than 84,000 gifts thanks to the generosity of members of the public and corporate donors.

Unique and affordable cards and gifts
I am delighted to share our Salvation Army Christmas cards and gifts range for 2024. Christmas cards and gift-giving are a wonderful way to connect with our loved ones, friends and colleagues, and to celebrate the gift of the Christ child.
We love taking the time to prepare our Christmas range and we have selected our most popular cards and gifts, as well as introducing some new and unique products. The Salvation Army and brass bands are synonymous with Christmas and, having sold out on some designs last year, we have introduced two new designs to the brass-band card range.
We are privileged to work with HMP Five Wells as part of a prisoner rehabilitation programme - this project has been hugely successful and, so far, over 4,000 bags have been handcrafted from upcycled denim. You can see the stylish tote bags on pages 22 and 23. As these are individually designed and handmade, no two bags are the same. Also new this year is the colourful Strawberry Field range, curated by our Salvation Army colleagues in Liverpool who run this unique venue which offers trainees life-changing opportunities – see pages 24 and 25.

Tote Bags
SP&S are proud to be working alongside HMP Five Wells, Wellingborough, providing denim and raw materials to the prison as part of a prisoner rehabilitation programme. The denim is collected at our sortation plant in Kettering and shipped to HMP Five Wells for manufacturing. The denim is washed, pressed and handmade to make these denim tote bags. There are three designs available but as these are handmade, each bag is unique.

Strawberry Field and the original Victorian house were gifted to The Salvation Army in 1934 and in 1936 it was opened as a children’s home for girls, later accepting boys. From then on, for nearly 70 years, it gave some of Liverpool’s most vulnerable children a refuge from turmoil and unhappiness – a safe, calm and spiritual home.
