The original seed of Salvation Army Trading Company Ltd (also known as SATCoL) began with a simple but purposeful idea. In 1985, Captain Terry Pattinson was the Officer in Charge at Mountbatten House, a 106bed centre in Southampton supporting people in need in the community. Captain Pattinson saw a clothing collection scheme during a visit to Australia. Inspired by its potential, he returned determined to create a similar initiative in the UK, one that could raise vital funds and offer meaningful work opportunities to residents.

This edition is packed full of sustainable style ideas and stories that matter the most to you - charity news! Every donation made, every item lovingly prepped for the sales floor, and every item bought, enables us to raise funds for The Salvation Army and support their work helping people in communities across the UK. We couldn’t do this without your support, so pages 3 to 5 are dedicated to just some of our charity and community giving highlights.

From that seed of an idea, fast forward to 1991 when the trading arm of the charity was formally established, and then to now, SATCoL is a nationwide reuse and recycling operation. With around 250 charity shops, including 60 donation centres, plus thousands of clothing banks and new innovative services, SATCoL raises funds and supports the mission of The Salvation Army. Here are just some of the highlights from our last full year: We raised over £5.4m for The Salvation Army UK and Ireland, and nearly £2.9m for our partners’ charities and other communitybased initiatives.

We served an estimated 6.9m customers in our stores – an increase of 15% on the year before.

In addition to the funds we raised last year, we provided 6,663 free clothing vouchers – helping those in need (people that come to us through our churches or who are referred to us from local authorities) with free clothing and other provisions.

Plus we provide thousands more items to people who have little or nothing at all. This can be anything from school uniforms to a set of cutlery, or free books to a set of curtains.

We cannot do this without your help, so we want to say THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts.

Young people find “sense of security” at Greig House Lifehouse

Charity news

Cooking on a budget course is a ‘life-saver’ A Scarborough Salvation Army project which teaches cooking and budgeting skills has had a transformative impact on participants with 150 people now completing the course.

Greig House – a new Salvation Army Lifehouse in Tower Hamlets for young people who are homeless – offers a “sense of security and it feels like home” as described by Jack*, one of the 20 young residents.

service ended in late 2023 The Salvation Army’s Homelessness Services Department worked with Tower Hamlets Council to develop a new service to support young people in the building.

The new Lifehouse supports young people aged 18-25 to transition to independent living within 18 months, but Greig House offers more than a roof. It provides trauma-informed, person-centred care, life skills training, and opportunities for education and employment. Each resident has their own room and access to welcoming communal spaces with TVs and games.

Jemma Soro, The Salvation Army’s Assistant Director Homelessness Services London and Southeast England, said: “Young people can fall on hard times through no fault of their own, and it is vital we support them back into independent living. We are pleased to work in partnership with Tower Hamlets Council to provide young people in challenging circumstances with somewhere that they feel safe and welcome".

Greig House initially offered a service for women facing homelessness and addiction. When this

*Jack’s story reflects the impact – at the age of 15, he found himself kicked out of his family home, scared and alone. He spent two weeks sleeping outside during snowy weather. His circumstances did little to improve when he then went to live with other family members. This led to abuse and eventually he was housed in care, where he also experienced difficulties.

“It’s been a positive experience here. It’s very calm and it’s very nice to have my own space. There are staff I can speak to, and issues are resolved quickly.”

On his 18th birthday, Jack was referred to Greig House and it was here that his life finally started to take a turn for the better. Jack says he feels a sense of security and is back in full time education, with plans to go to university to study electrics.

“We have our own rooms, and we have access to food bank services which helps financially. They teach us key life skills such as budgeting that give me confidence to live independently. When it’s my time, I’ll move on.”

He also shared that when he broke his leg, he “was given support with bedding, laundry, cooking and making appointments. There is a sense of security here and it feels like home. It is one big family.”

Led by Lindsey Barker, The Salvation Army’s free six-week Victory Programme is inspired by the resourcefulness shown during the Second World War. Two courses, one focused on batch cooking and the other on baking, demonstrate how to cook meals for less than £1 a portion while also helping to build confidence.

The course has had a lifesaving impact on Stephen, 65, who was struggling mentally after a traumatic medical episode.

Stephen said: “Coming here did my mental health so much good and I think it would be fair to say it helped save my life. It got me out of the depths of despair. At my appointments with the hospital (for mental health), all I was talking about was the Victory Programme, I wasn’t talking about depression and being lonely, I was talking about how this has changed my life, it’s a marvellous thing. I have got a smile on my face now. I’d never cooked much before, but I made sausage rolls and the compliments from my wife made me feel cock-a-hoop!”

Who doesn’t love a new pair of trainers? They can be a great gift for a friend, loved one, or for yourself! Trainers are also endlessly versatile, allowing you to pair them with many different outfits, from casual jeans to chic looks.

But you don’t always have to buy new. Pre-loved trainers fit just as well; in fact, they offer the same comfort and style, often looking brand new and they come at a fraction of their original price whether you find them in a charity shop or online!

Choosing pre-loved trainers isn’t just good for your bank account – it’s also great for the planet! By giving the trainers a second life, you’re reducing waste and supporting the circular fashion economy.

Tips to refurb your pre-loved trainers Make the most use out of your pre-loved trainers by following these 4 simple tips: 1. Remove laces and insoles and wash these separately in a mesh laundry bag.

2. Use an old toothbrush and a gentle cleaning paste to scrub away any dirt and stains.

3. Depending on the type of material, some trainers can be put in a mesh laundry bag and washed on a slow spin cycle. However, always check the care label.

Luciana’s second-hand journey

A proud advocate for second-hand shopping, Luciana sees it as both practical and functional. “It helps reduce waste and it’s more cost-effective.

I always recommend it to customers, friends, and family. It’s fashionable and budget friendly.”

Her personal style is just as bold as her beliefs. “I love bright, vibrant clothes. I get compliments when I wear colourful outfits!”

Luciana’s journey with The Salvation Army Wellington store is stitched with passion, purpose, and a love for vibrant fashion. She first stepped through the doors in 2013 as a volunteer, and after a decade of dedication, she officially joined the team as a paid Sales Assistant in March 2023, before being promoted more recently into an Assistant Manager role in a new Salvation Army store.

One of her most memorable influences was a colleague, Marie. “She was so encouraging and inspiring. Her hard work really motivated me to keep progressing.”

Luciana’s story is a reminder that second-hand isn’t second best, it’s a way to express yourself, support your community, and make sustainable choices. Whether she’s ringing up a sale or offering a kind word, Luciana proves that fashion with heart never goes out of style.

“I started volunteering after a friend introduced me to The Salvation Army,” Luciana shares. “I felt passion for the job straight away.”

We invited Luciana to take part in a mini second-hand style challenge. She curated three fashionable outfits using pieces from the Wellington charity shop, each one reflecting her vibrant taste and proving that secondhand style can be bold, expressive, and totally on-trend.

Her transition from volunteer to staff member was more than just a title change, it was a moment of growth. “As a volunteer, I would help with the donation stock. But once I became a sales assistant, I could support customers and learn new skills.”

Luciana’s warmth and respect for others shine through in everything she does. “I love helping vulnerable people. That’s what this job means to me; it’s about care and compassion.”

Winnie states: “If you are going to buy second-hand, nowadays, especially in London, there are lots of boutiques that are consignment stores that resell luxury so maybe you want to invest in a piece.”

Winnie continues: “…each brand has their own philosophy, their own way of telling their brand story.

So as an authenticity expert, you have to understand the brand history, also each brand has their own craftmanship style.” These are all things to consider when deciding what to invest in.
