ften misattributed to Roman philosopher Seneca the Younger, the quotation above was first published, unattributed, in 1912 in Youth’s Companion, an American children’s magazine.

At SAS, we might offer a slightly different version: Good news is what happens when preparation and faith Susan & Karl Sjolund meet opportunity and generosity.

Since 1868, the Episcopal secondary schools on the Mountain have thrived when there has been a clear sense of mission, a well-conceived vision for the future, a commitment to working hard to achieve that vision, and a belief that, through His servants, God will provide.

In the coming months, SAS will be preparing for opportunity. Having completed much of our five-year strategic plan (see pages 13-15), we will be formulating a 25-year blueprint for our future. The choice of 25 years is ambitious and intentional, grounded in a belief that the long view will allow us to step out of the pressures of the day-today to imagine what SAS may be for the generation beyond ours.

Seneca did not say that bit about luck. He did say, “When a man does not know what harbor he is making for, no wind is the right wind.” We look forward to planning this voyage together. We have faith that, when the time is right, He will fill our sails.

James Named Grundy Volunteer of the Month

Kendale James ’20 was named Grundy County’s March Youth Volunteer of the Month in recognition of the Buddy Bears program she started. Kendale collects stuffed animals for police officers to give to children who have experienced, or are experiencing, a traumatic event.

Kendale collected boxes, made fliers, and recruited local businesses to be drop-off locations. Her fliers and Facebook posts yielded 342 stuffed toys.

With so many toys available, Kendale expanded the program to include the Monteagle Police Department.

Engineers Week Victors

Ester Yang ’18 and Kyra Wilson ’17 took first place in the Engineers Week Student Design Competition in February at the University of Tennessee Space Institute.

Twenty-five teams from 10 schools were challenged to design and build a vessel to carry cargo across water using provided materials and to be judged on the quantity of goods transported and the speed of the delivery.

Kyra and Ester received a trophy and Amazon gift cards and will have their names engraved on the Spirit of St. Louis model that is on display at the Hands-on Science Center in Tullahoma.

College Acceptances Rolling In Others to Have a Hope and a Future,” Although many colleges do not send out acceptances until April, by early March, 84% of the Class of 2017 had received admission to college. The 44 seniors applied to 98 different colleges and universities across the country.

The schools range geographically from Bowdoin College in Maine to UCLA, with local favorites, the University of the South, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, and University of Alabama-Huntsville, all garnering significant attention. They range in size from the Ohio State University with an enrollment of over 66,000 students to Watkins College of Art and Design with just 292 students.

Students have already committed to University of North Dakota, University of Chicago, University of Alabama-Huntsville, ETSU, Elon University, NYU, the University of the South, and Agnes Scott College.

A Hope and a Future The annual Bishop Reynolds Forum welcomed the Rev. Colenzo Hubbard, executive director of the Emmanuel Center in Memphis and Vicar of Emmanuel Episcopal Church, to campus in March.

Fr. Hubbard’s topic, “Encouraging

drew from his decades of work educating and empowering at-risk youth and adults through Christian ministry.

Fr. Hubbard also preached in Chapel on Monday morning and attended the senior religion classes. The Bishop Reynolds Forum brings a prominent speaker to campus each year to engage students and the community in a topic of current interest. The Forum was established through an endowment in memory of the Rt. Rev. George Reynolds, the late Bishop of Tennessee.

Music to Our Ears The Vega String Quartet, Emory University’s quartet-in-residence, returned to McCrory Hall in March for a well-attended concert of classical and contemporary works. The free performance was supported by a grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission.

Governor’s School Bound Three students have received highly coveted invitations to the Tennessee Governor’s Schools. Sophia Hartman ’19 was accepted to the Governor’s School for International Studies at the University of Memphis.

Meredith Miller ’18 was accepted to the Governor’s School for the Arts at Middle Tennessee State University. Genevieve Rogers ’18 was accepted to the Governor’s School for the Humanities at University of TennesseeMartin. Genevieve was also chosen as an alternate for the Governor’s School for the Arts in film.

As Our World Turns Emmy-award winning actress Elaine Bromka, whose screen, stage, and television credits include roles in Uncle Buck, Law and Order, ER, and The Sopranos, joined us on campus in January for a workshop on video auditions with our aspiring thespians.

Ms. Bromka spoke to the students about diction, presence, confidence, and color choices.

Soaring with the Eagles Boy Scout Troop 14, sponsored

by St. Andrew’sSewanee School, honored its newest Eagle Scouts, Andrew Bachman ’17, Max LaFrenier ’17, and Sam Smith ’17, in February. To attain this highest rank, a scout must earn at least 21 merit badges, demonstrate an ideal attitude based upon service, leadership, and the Scout Oath and Law, and complete a service project that the Scout plans, organizes, leads, and manages. Only four percent of Boy Scouts achieve Eagle Scout rank, but Troop 14 has brought 33 young men to this distinction. Troop 14 is led by Scoutmaster Alex Neubauer ’91.

National Merit Honors

Cooper Nickels ’17, a day student from Manchester, Tenn., and Ashton Milford ’17, a boarding student from Hot Springs, Ark., were named Commended Scholars by the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The designation is earned by only 3.3% of the 1.5 million high school students who take the PSAT annually.

W

hen I think about Dr. King, I find myself focusing less on the fact of his courage and more on the source of that courage. Just being courageous doesn’t make a person a hero. A fool can be courageous and still be a fool. Dr. King, of course, was no fool.

So, what made him so brave?

What made him think he could face down a giant with nothing more than a sling and a stone?

The answer can be found in the words he spoke that evening in Memphis. He had been to the mountaintop. He had been shown the Promised Land.

Dr. King already knew the ending of the story, because he knew the author.

Martin Luther King’s unshakable faith in God is the part of his life that I don’t want us to ever forget. That’s what drove him. Like Moses who, just before he died, stood on the top of Mount Pisgah and looked over the land that God had promised the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, Dr. King knew that he was serving a loving and just God who always kept His promises. He wasn’t sure if he would be around to see his dream realized, but he knew God would be. And that was all the assurance he needed to wake up the next day, even if it was for the last time.

Meet Jay Howard

Brexit to Caving For one week each February the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee community shifts its attention to intensive courses dedicated to experimental and experiential learning. This year’s Winterim offered 31 courses including intellectual topics like Landmark Supreme Court Cases and Populism from Brexit to Trumpland; inventive courses like Hogwarts: An Architectural History and Future Tech in Film; creative classes like Introduction to Watercolors and Landscape Photography; and skills courses like blacksmithing, cross-stitch, carpentry, and financial literacy. Students stretched their abilities with songwriting, movie making, and ballet and kicked back to enjoy classic films and anime. Groups hiked the Perimeter and Appalachian Trails and discovered landmarks of Grundy County and area caves.

Students also enjoyed a mid-week Chapel talk by Stephen B. Raulston, Professor of Spanish and Chair of the Spanish Department at the University of the South, who spoke about his travels on the Camino de Santiago in Spain.

Jay Howard joined SAS as Director of Development in November. Jay was formerly Director of Development at Webb School of Knoxville where he raised over $15.3 million, completed an $8.2 million capital campaign, increased annual giving by 60%, and increased planned giving expectancies from $3 million to $9.2 million during his 8-year tenure. Prior to joining Webb, Jay served as the vice president for development at The Hermitage and Battle Ground Academy, as a senior consultant for the Independent School Counsel, and in development positions at Flint Hill School, Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation, and New Orleans Museum of Art. Early in his career, he taught social studies and coached at St. Martin’s Episcopal School in New Orleans and coached at Academy of the Holy Cross and Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C. Jay is a graduate of University of Richmond, Sidwell Friends School, and The Potomac School.

Shattering Swim Records Five swimmers qualified for the state meet and the team broke six records during the season. At the regional

swim meet, Randy Paul ’19 broke the 50 Fly and 50 Back records. Catherine Gray ’18 broke school records in the 200 IM and 100 Back. The boys' relay team of Jack Haight ’17, Aidan Smith ’20,

Grapplers Go to State Christian Taylor ’17 placed 2nd overall in the 170-pound weight class at the TSSAA Division II East/Middle Section Wrestling Tournament.

Ferah Fortune ’17 placed third at the West Tennessee Regional Wrestling Tournament.

Both qualified for the TSSAA State Wrestling Tournament where Ferah took 6th place in the 185-pound weight class. At the school's annual Mountain Top Tournament, Christian and Nakkia Whitman ’17 placed third and Ferah placed fourth in their respective weight classes.

Randy Paul ’19, and Sam Smith ’17 broke the 200 Free and 200 Medley records. Both of the new relay records were broken again at the state meet.

Hoops Honors Kenneth Thomas ’17 and Blaise Zeitler ’18 were named to the TSSAA Division II-A East/Middle All District Basketball Team.

Golf Greatness Four-time state golf tournament qualifier and 2016 TSSAA Division II-A State golf champion Hannah Powell ’17 was named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Association’s All-State Golf Team.

SAS Administrators Spend a Day in Class "I enjoyed school a lot more this time around." —Head of School, Karl Sjolund r. Sjolund was considering his day shadowing 11th grader Gio Hui through a typical Monday class schedule. As part of the International Shadow a Student Challenge, four SAS administrators joined more than 1,686 educators in 54 countries around the world and stepped into a student’s shoes for one day in February.

The goal was to see what our school feels like from a student’s perspective.

Our administrators experienced the busiest day in the SAS schedule, Monday, when an Upper School student meets with every class for 45 minutes and Middle School students attend 5-6 classes varying in length from 45 to 90 minutes.

Observations were positive. Our administrators were impressed by the energy that the teachers and students brought to the classroom, the ability of our teachers to keep everyone engaged, and the clear expectations that had been established for preparation, participation, and behavior.

Mr. Sjolund enjoyed seeing how technology was integrated a little differently into each of the classes he attended. “In Biology, Mr. Miller had us playing a Jeopardy game he created for test review.

In Chemistry, Mrs. Bachman was using an app that let students answer questions in a way that required everyone to participate but allowed them the comfort of knowing that only the teacher knew whose answers were whose.” He was also impressed by how

teachers could adjust on the fly to changes in circumstances. “Because of illnesses, when Gio and I arrived at Chinese he was the only student there.

Ms. Sun turned the class into a one-on-one tutoring session.”

"SAS teachers are also expected to be able to handle heterogeneous classes with students with a range of preparation and ability. Does it work?"

Dean of Students Laura Clay observed flexibility in the other direction, “Señor Rinck was handling his class and covering for another teacher which left him with a combined class of 40 students. Despite the unusually large attendance and the different ability levels, he managed to keep everyone engaged and speaking Spanish the entire time.” During 8th grade Theatre, Dean Clay was impressed to see how masterfully Ms. Jackson transitioned the students through four

very different activities.

The day flew by for Head of Upper School Kelley Black, “Every class I was in was totally different than the one before it with information delivered slightly differently.” Geometry that day was more teachercentered, while in English the students were working in student-centered groups. History returned to a teacher-centered approach but with plenty of time for discussion. In Conceptual Physics, the class focused on group work. “And, I know that if I returned on another day,” said Mrs. Black, “the approaches might be completely different.

That ability to teach by multiple methods is the hallmark of SAS teachers.”

The exercise is intended to help school leaders to see the instructional day from a different perspective and begin to think about what might need tweaking.

SAS teachers are also expected to be able to handle heterogeneous classes for students with a range of preparation and ability. Does it work? “There were certainly students who were having to work extra hard to keep up,” observed Head of Middle School Marion Knoll, “but I saw students helping each other in pairs and in groups, and it was also understood that they would have work periods to come back for more help.” Mrs. Black enjoyed seeing how the students helped one another, “In Ms. Walker’s English class we did a writing exercise that had groups of students producing a paragraph and then evaluating another group’s paragraph. In each group there were students for whom this was easy and those who struggled.

The ones who struggled were buoyed by their classmates and by Ms. Walker who drifted from group to group to help guide the discussions.”

There was much with which to be pleased,

but the Shadow a Student Challenge is not just about observing what is working. The exercise is intended to help school leaders to see the instructional day from a different perspective and begin to think about what might need tweaking. Our team was honest about what could use some work.

Mrs. Knoll noted that some class periods felt a little longer than she expected.

“Even with a teacher who was doing an excellent job of breaking the time up into multiple activities, 90 minutes can feel like a stretch. Perhaps the kids don’t feel that way, but I think it’s worth discussing with both the faculty and with students as we move forward.” Mrs. Black remarked that despite efforts to create a schedule that mixes time for instruction and reflection, the sheer volume of information delivered in a single day is a lot to take in.

might work best for which classes, the use of work periods, and meeting the needs of our quieter students.

Students will be happy to hear that Mrs. Black wondered if there was a way to have less homework due on Mondays.

“I didn’t find the Monday schedule to be overwhelming, but I think preparing for six classes on Monday may be. Our students are so busy with activities in addition to their schoolwork; it would be nice to find a way to give them some of their weekend back.”

Mrs. Black was also impressed by what she didn’t see: cell phones. Mr. Sjolund acknowledged that some of that may have been due to their presence, but he thinks the overriding reason is that there is just too much going on, “Our classes are small, fast-paced, and challenging. A student doesn’t have the luxury of getting distracted.”

And Planning for the Future

ITH THE HELP OF A WIDE RANGE OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS, in October 2013, St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School developed an ambitious 5-Year Strategic Plan that committed to practicing a grace-filled, lively, and welcoming spiritual life while seeking more intentional opportunities to learn from and serve the world; expanding our commitment to outstanding instruction and whole-child support; and solidifying, expanding,

and marketing the distinguishing programs that capitalize on our geography, history, and reputation.

Many of the goals have been achieved, and much progress has been made towards refining and revising what is left to complete. The progress is a testament to the commitment of faculty, staff, trustees, donors, and alumni to the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School mission.

Practice a grace-filled, lively, and welcoming spiritual life grounded in the liturgy and traditions of the Episcopal Church while seeking ways to learn from and serve the world.

Expand our commitment to outstanding instruction and individualized support.

Integrate the curriculum for catechumenate, life issues, religion, and Chapel programs.

With recognition that having a non-clergy head of school would increase the burden on our Chaplain for classroom instruction, worship leadership, and counseling, we added an Assistant Chaplain position in 2015. Our community is enriched by having greater gender diversity in priestly ministry, and our Assistant Chaplain’s expertise in ethics has enriched the Introduction to Religious Studies and Life Issues curricula.

Integrate science, technology, engineering, arts, and math learning (STEAM).

In keeping with pedagogical research, we flipped the sequence of our science courses to place Chemistry before Biology. Among other benefits, this change allows for a better integration of math skills into our science courses. Courses integrating STEAM disciplines now include a Technology Afternoon Program that includes robotics, 3-D design and printing, Global Positioning Systems, online mapping, and coding, and courses in Technical Theatre and Technical Drawing. A project-based course entitled IDE8 offers opportunities for integrating creative problem-solving, design thinking, and handson skills. Recent Winterim courses in blacksmithing, carpentry, archaeology, and forensic science provide opportunities for interdisciplinary learning with a STEAM focus.

Establish a long-term calendar for student travel and service opportunities.

Students and their families can now make long range plans based on our multiyear calendar of school-sponsored trips to China, Jamaica, and Washington, D.C. and the introduction of ecology trips with a hands-on research focus. Many students are fulfilling their service requirement through an on-going partnership with Morton Memorial Methodist Church’s food ministry.

Help students embrace and create long-term academic and life plans.

Invigorate faculty and staff.

With information from the LSIS learning styles assessment and Naviance Strengths Assessment and working with the Head of the Upper School, the Director of College Counseling, and/or the student’s advisor, students develop a multi-year academic plan and set goals that are shared with parents, students and advisors and revisit and revise the plans each year.

The entire faculty attended the TAIS Biennial Conference in November 2016. The conference provided an opportunity to generate and exchange ideas with our colleagues and with peers from other schools. In January, Damian Kavanagh, Vice President for Accreditation at the Southern Association of Independent Schools, helped the faculty to begin creating an improved system for classroom observation, evaluation, and professional growth.

Strengthen the Learning Resources Center.

The Learning Resources Center was established under the direction of a Learning Resources Coordinator. The Coordinator meets regularly with the Head of the Upper School to discuss students of academic concern, establish academic success plans for them, and communicate and monitor these plans with the involvement of all faculty involved with the student. A peer tutoring program provides in-house support for students needing subject-based help, and students and teachers are encouraged to use work periods for additional academic support as needed, helping families to avoid, when at all possible, the high cost of private tutors.

Enhance the emotional and physical care of students.

Centralize and intentionally staff supervised study.

Supervised study hall moved from the residence houses to Agee Library where students have fewer distractions and more consistent and informed supervision.

Study hall staff guide students in developing improved study habits by creating nightly “to-do” lists and helping them prioritize work.

Recognizing the national trend for increased expectations for emotional and psychological support, SAS welcomes two counselors to campus to meet with students as-needed. The school nurses meet proactively with boarding students to discuss health clinic resources and health-related issues and answer any health-related questions. The school nurses, Chaplain, Assistant Chaplain, and the Dean of Students meet regularly to discuss student well-being. A Health Advisory Committee meets each semester to discuss general issues of concern.

A campus emergency siren was installed and the community holds regular drills for various emergency scenarios. An electronic fob system has been implemented for most campus buildings to increase access monitoring. SAS employs two security guards, one who lives on campus and, in addition to other duties, helps to patrol the Res (one of the school’s campus lakes) in the summers.

Advanced Chemistry, Biology, and Physics, formerly in rotation, are now offered every year. A more favorable procedure for course enrollment at the University of the South has ensured that, within the constraints of their SAS schedule, students are again getting their first choice college classes. Numerous students have pursued faculty-directed independent study in topics such as The French Revolution, Politics and Society in Contemporary America, and Interdisciplinary Anthropology and Geology. Select students are participating in a pilot study using Middlebury Interactive for advanced online language study.

Annual surveys now include parent satisfaction surveys after major campus events and focus group meetings for boarders. In April 2015, SAS conducted the SAIS Values Narrative Survey for students, parents, faculty, staff, alumni, and trustees. The survey will be repeated in spring 2017.

Hiring in recent years has prioritized the need for faculty with experience in and knowledge of outdoor education regardless of academic discipline. The SAS Farm and Farm Educator are now integrated into the overall curriculum with the addition of a farm component in Middle School Adventure Education. The varsity Mountain Biking team and club climbing team attract large numbers of participants. SAS is proud to host the annual Tennessee Mountain Biking State Championships.

The school’s Parents’ Council was reconstituted as a Parents’ Association to allow the equal membership of all parents.

Transition to a stable administrative structure.

SAS welcomes the public to campus for various cultural events including concerts, art exhibitions, and art workshops. In addition to sports camps and Shakerag Workshops, summer offerings now include English Language Learners, choral, and creative writing programs.

A new administrative model created the position of Head of Upper School, eliminated the positions of Director of Studies and Director of Faculty, and retitled the Director of Middle School as Head of Middle School. A system of Department Coordinators was instituted to increase leadership opportunities among the faculty and provide a better system of curriculum integration within academic departments.

Strengthen the business model and admissions and development practices to ensure financial stability and sustainability.

In response to changing student interests, SAS curtailed the varsity softball program, but added varsity Mountain Biking, a second trimester of Farming, Landscape Painting, Technology, a winter Outdoor Adventure program focusing on climbing, and a more robust Strength & Conditioning program which is flourishing with more intentional instruction and a significant upgrade to the weight room.

In December 2017, the Head of School and Chief Financial Officer put together a 5-year business plan that lays out enrollment and net tuition revenue goals with enrollment increasing each year to an eventual 270 students. To achieve these goals, international admissions travel has been increased, a summer English Language Summer Immersion program will begin in Summer 2017 to serve as a preparatory program for the school’s increasing international population, and, in Fall 2017, SAS will welcome 5-day boarders in grades 8-12.

Athletic teams have benefitted from a coaching internship program created in cooperation with the University of the South to assist head coaches and provide on-the-job experience for college students seeking coaching and teaching experience.

Optimize student experience and economy in grade level programming.

Grade level themes are based on academic topics covered and students’ developmental needs. They focus on community building, relationships, leadership opportunities, and explorations of personal and group identity. Grades meet at least three times each year for activities such as the tenth grade trip to diverse religious sites as a supplement to the World History curriculum and an eleventh grade trip to Civil War sites as a supplement to their U.S. History studies.

Following an extensive search, a development professional with more than 25 years of experience, much of it in secondary school fundraising, was hired to succeed the school’s retiring Director of Development.

In January 2017, the Board of Trustees passed a balanced budget for the first time in three years.

The Physical Plant staff now tracks maintenance and repair requests and needs through a web-based planning module. The Chapel Campaign was completed with $1.4 million raised for renovation and endowment of the building. Another $660,000 was raised for campus stewardship including roofs and HVAC improvements. UILDING ON THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS ACHIEVED under this Strategic Plan and with full understanding of the goals that were not met, SAS has begun the preliminary process of identifying our vision for the next 25 years and establishing 5- and 10-year goals to bring us closer to that vision. or Chaplain Drew Bunting ’93 and Assistant Chaplain Molly Short, St. Andrew’s-Sewanee is both workplace and home. Father Bunting, his wife, the Rev. April Berends who is rector at Christ Church in Chattanooga, and their two young sons live in Martin House and eat three meals a day in Robinson Dining Hall. Mother Short and her husband, teacher Michael Short, live in Warner House, where Mother Short is lead house parent.

Father Bunting and Mother Short teach Life Issues and Introduction to Religious Studies and share pastoral care responsibilities and the leadership of Chapel services. “Some of my work happens by observation in the dining hall,” Father Bunting said. Mother Short enjoys impromptu meetings or chats with students.

As the head chaplain, Father Bunting serves on the administration, regularly takes a turn as administrator-on-call, and sponsors two extracurricular groups. In addition to her teaching, worship, and residential duties, Mother Short coordinates church relations for the admissions office, assists with track and field, and serves as Gorgas House Leader.

“The thing I love most is being the students’ pastor and knowing what’s going on in their lives,” said Father Bunting. “It’s such a holy thing, and I know I’m doing exactly what God wants me to do right now.”

“We get this unique, fully integrated ministry,” Mother Short said. “I am living with the people that I am serving, and it’s fantastic.”

T

he St. Andrew’s Chapel Centennial Campaign publicly kicked off on Alumni Weekend 2014 with a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Chapel’s consecration. Close to 500 donors contributed approximately $1.4 million in gifts and pledges to restore the Chapel and create a restricted endowment for its operation and maintenance. In September 2016, the restoration was completed and the Chapel was rededicated during the celebratory weekend that marked the installation of Head of School Karl Sjolund.

Leadership for the campaign was provided by the Rev. Patrick Gahan StA ’73, Murray Robinson StA ’52, and Andy Simmonds StA ’61. Other members of the campaign steering committee included trustees Eunice Colmore, the Rev. James Boyd StA ’65, and George

Myers SA ’74, along with Ric Dillon StA ’74, Dr. Clifton Lewis StA ’75, James Seidule, StA ’50, Paul Warren, StA ’76, Tim Graham (former Director of Development) and the Rev. John Thomas (former Head of School). Class Gift Leaders from St. Andrew’s 1950-1981 inspired their classmates to participate and ensured the project’s success.

Successfully completed matching gift challenges played crucial roles in the campaign’s completion. An anonymous donor provided $200,000 that required $400,000 in matching funds. Ric Dillon provided a $100,000 dollar-for-dollar match for St. Andrew’s alumni 1971-79.

Alumni Godfrey Cheshire, Jr. SMA ’35 of Raleigh, N.C., died November 30, 2016. Mr. Cheshire attended North Carolina State College and graduated from the University of North Carolina. He joined the U.S. Naval Reserve and was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy at Northwestern University. He served on the Harold C. Thomas during WWII and was its commanding officer before the war’s end.

Mr. Cheshire began his career with Superior Stone Company of Raleigh.

He worked for the company and its successor companies, serving as vice president prior to his retirement in 1981. He served on the vestry of the Church of the Good Shepherd and served as president of the Carolina Country Club, the Raleigh Rotary Club and the Terpsichorean Club. He was chairman of the board of Capital Associated Industries and a director of the NCSU Education Foundation. He represented the Eastern Judicial District of the North Carolina Selective Service Board and served on the Wake County Board of Social Services and the First Flight Centennial Committee. He was a member of Society of the Cincinnati and Milburnie Fishing Club. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth “Sis” Silver Cheshire; three children; two granddaughters; and extended family.

Hiero Louis Taylor, Jr. SMA ’43 died on January 2, 2017. He volunteered and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II and graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a degree in physics. He built ponds, roads, and communities throughout Charlotte with his company, H. L. Taylor Grading and had real estate investments in the city. In 1980, he retired to Indian Land, where he opened a garage to pursue his love of tinkering with engines and fixing things. Mr. Taylor is survived by three children and one grandson.

James Porter McNeil, Jr. SMA ’44 of Jacksonville, Fla., died on February 11, 2017. Dr. McNeil served in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman at the Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Md., prior to attending the University of Virginia. In 1952, he graduated from the University of Virginia Medical School and

married his wife, Anne. He studied under Dr. Papanicolaou, inventor of the Pap smear, at New York Hospital. Dr. McNeil introduced the procedure to the northern Florida region. He retired from private practice after 26 years and continued for an additional 18 years at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville.

Dr. McNeil was a member of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecology, American Fertility Society, Duval County Medical Society, Florida Medical Association, and Southeastern OB/GYN Society and served on the board of trustees for the Ponce de Leon Society for The Cummer Museum of Art & Gardens. He is survived by three children and five grandchildren.

George A. Peterkin, Jr. SMA ’44 died Nov. 10, 2016. Mr. Peterkin joined the U.S. Navy as an aviation cadet. He graduated from The University of Texas in 1948. He was president of Dixie Carriers, Inc., a small barge company, which merged with Kirby Industries, now known as Kirby Corporation. In his 50 years with the company, he served as president and chairman of the board. Mr. Peterkin was elected to the board of trustees of Texas Children’s Hospital in 1967 and served as vice president, president, and chairman. He also served on the board of directors of the Texas Medical Center. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Girling Peterkin; seven children; eight grandchildren; and extended family.

Lee “Buddy” Owen Hunter SMA ’45 died on December 5, 2016. He graduated from Georgia Institute of Technology with a degree in electrical engineering and was a U.S. Army Sergeant First Class in the 156th Infantry Battalion during the Korean War. He worked at Pennyrile Rural Electric, was a writer and photographer for the Ft. Campbell Courier newspaper, served as a Public Affairs Officer, and retired as a computer programmer with the Department of the Army. He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Glenn Hunter. Mr. Hunter is survived by his son, three stepdaughters, and two grandsons. He donated his body to the Vanderbilt Anatomical Donation Program for the advancement of education and clinical training of medical students and medical personnel.

John Pierce Harlan SMA ’46 died on November 23, 2016. He received a degree in petroleum engineering from Oklahoma University. After serving in the U.S. Army for two years, Mr. Harlan worked as a petroleum engineer at Chevron Oil for 20 years. He founded and was president of Harbridge Petroleum Corp. He was an active member of the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists and Louisiana Association of Independent Producers and Royalty Owners and was a member of the New Orleans, Tchefuncta, and Blowing Rock Country Clubs.

Mr. Harlan is survived by his wife, Martha Ann Neal Harlan; two children; seven grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

David M. Bernardin, Sr. SMA ’47 of Pottsboro, Texas, died September 28, 2016. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, the school of banking at SMU, the Financial Public Relations School in Chicago, and the American Banking Institute of Dallas. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was part of the 443rd Troop Carrier Wing during the Korean War. He began his career at Mercantile National Bank in Dallas in 1947 where he was vice president for almost 30 years. He was founding president of Union Bank & Trust in Dallas. He was president of Northway National Bank until his retirement in 1983.

Mr. Bernardin was a life member and past president of the North Dallas Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Salesmanship Club of Dallas. He joined the Scottish Rite and became a 32nd degree Knight Commander of the Court of Honor mason. He volunteered for the Boy Scouts, United Way, and the Pottsboro Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the Pottsboro Lions Club. He was predeceased by his two wives, Faye Mynon Bernardin and Marianne Eubanks Bernardin.

He is survived by his daughter, two grandchildren, and extended family.

Henry Rugeley Ferguson SMA ’48 died on January 2, 2107. During his senior year at SMA he was one of the six elite cadets on the Battalion Staff. Mr. Ferguson attended the University of Texas at Austin and was drafted his senior year. He served the U.S. Army in Inchon, Korea. He received the Bronze Star Medal and retired as a captain. He returned to

Texas to manage his family’s ranch in Bay City. He became a professional rider in the rodeo circuit. He managed Hashknife Ranches, over 20,000 acres of cattle, farming, and hunting operations. He bred and raised horses. Mr. Ferguson became a Special Texas Ranger in the San Antonio area. He was a Wedgewood collector; his collection is on loan to the San Antonio Museum of Art. Mr. Ferguson served as a director of the Texas Agribusiness and Port City Stockyards companies in Houston and was a director of Scobey Moving and Storage Company in San Antonio. He served on the boards of the San Antonio Zoological Society, Southwest Texas Methodist Hospital Foundation, Sunshine Cottage School for the Deaf, San Antonio Museum Association, Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, Charity Ball Association, and the San Antonio Livestock Exposition. He was the co-founder of the Exotic Wildlife Association and a member of numerous organizations, including the Former Texas Rangers, Game Conservation International, San Antonio Country Club, the Argyle Club, Club Giraud, the St. Anthony and Petroleum Clubs of San Antonio, the Order of the Alamo, and the San Antonio German Club. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kittie West Nelson. He is survived by two children and two grandchildren.

The Rev. Patrick Gahan StA ’73 officiated at his memorial service.

Eugene R. Sidwell SMA ’48 died December 30, 2016. He graduated from Tulsa University with a degree in petroleum engineering. Mr. Sidwell served in the U.S. Air Force and was president of Sidwell Oil & Gas for 64 years. He was an Eagle Scout and a trustee of the Panhandle Plains Historical Society. He served on the boards of the Llano Cemetery Assoc. and the Amarillo Children’s Home.

He funded many local charities through the Sidwell Foundation.

Mr. Sidwell is survived by his wife, Donna Beagle Sidwell; four children; 14 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and extended family.

Jesse Stringer Vogtle, Sr. SMA ’51 died December 12, 2016. He earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees, Phi Beta Kappa, from the University of Virginia. He was admitted to the Alabama Bar

Association in 1958 and practiced with Martin, Balch, Bingham, Hawthorne & Williams. He later joined the Alabama Power Company, serving as executive vice president, general counsel, and board member.

He was a member of the American, Alabama, and Birmingham Bar Associations, and the Federal Power Association. He served as chairman of the Better Business Association and the downtown YMCA. He held volunteer leadership positions with the Birmingham Zoo and the United Way and was a graduate of Leadership Birmingham’s Inaugural Class of 1984. He was a member of the Society of the War of 1812 and the Sons of the American Revolution. Mr. Vogtle is survived by his wife, Alline Brown Vogtle; two children; and eight grandchildren.

William Mendenhall Webster III SMA ’51 died February 11, 2017.

He was a Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Georgia Institute of Technology.

After serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve, Mr. Webster returned to Greenville, S.C., and founded Webster Service Stations, which was later sold to Marathon Oil Company. He was a member of the board of directors and president of the Litchfield Company of South Carolina. He was the founder and president of Carabo Capital, LLC, which owned and developed Bojangles restaurants.

Mr. Webster was a founding member of the board of directors of Carolina First Bank and served on the board of directors of the National Bank of South Carolina. He was Chairman of the South Carolina Wildlife Commission and received the Order of the Palmetto Award for his distinguished service. He was the past president of the Cotillion Club and the Poinsett Club and a member of the Poinsett Investment Club. Mr. Webster is survived by his wife, Langhorne Tuller Webster; two children; and seven grandchildren.

Milton Parker III StA ’52 died October 10, 2016. He attended the University of the South and served in the U.S. Army in Stuttgart, Germany. He was a graduate of William and Mary and the University of London. Mr. Parker was an interior designer with South Eastern Galleries of Charleston. He was a lifelong communicant of the Parish Church of St. Helena, where he served on the vestry, as an acolyte,

Eucharistic minister, and with Stephen's Ministry. He is survived by his wife, Frances Dawsey Parker; two daughters; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Francis Kalmbach SMA ’53 died February 9, 2016. He attended Washington and Lee University, Louisiana State University, and Tulane University. He worked as an architect in Shreveport before turning to a successful career as a painter. He lived for over 40 years in the artist colony of San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, William Chase Kalmbach, Jr., SMA ’51 and Vernon Terrell Kalmbach SMA ’56; and his longtime partners, Bob Bourland and Harry Kessler Wright. He is survived by his four children; eleven grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and close friends.

Townsend Durant Wolfe III SMA ’54 died January 14, 2017. Mr. Wolfe studied at the Atlanta Art Institute, Cranbrook Academy of Art, and the Harvard Institute of Arts Administration. He was the recipient of several honorary doctorates. He retired as director and chief curator of the Arkansas Arts Center, where he quadrupled the annual attendance, oversaw the completion of a children’s theater, and created a traveling exhibition that brought art to rural areas of the state. He was passionate that the children of Arkansas had access to the fine arts, and that works by women, African Americans, and other minorities, and self-taught and unknown artists were well represented. Mr. Wolfe was a member of the National Council of the Arts and the National Museum Services Board and received numerous professional awards including the Creative Spirit Award from the Pratt Institute. In 1995, he curated a 20th century American sculpture exhibition at the White House. He and his wife created and installed a permanent exhibit in the Donald W. Reynolds Health and Science Building at Arkansas State University. Mr. Wolfe is survived by his wife, Dr. Brooks Gibson-Wolfe and four children.

Robert M. Morrow SMA ’55 died October 31, 2016. Mr. Morrow graduated with a degree in chemistry from Vanderbilt University. He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps from 1959

to 1962, where he earned his private pilot’s license. Mr. Morrow joined Eastman Chemical Co. in Kingsport, Tenn., as a salesman in the specialties dye division, retiring after 40 years of service as vice president and general manager of the fine chemical division. He was a member of the Kingsport Rotary Club. Mr. Morrow was a passionate traveler, fisherman, photographer, and craftsman. He is survived by his wife, Sarah (Sally) F. Morrow; three children; and eight grandchildren.

George Bruce McPherson, Jr. SMA ’56 died November 29, 2016.

He received his undergraduate and master’s degrees from the University of South Carolina and enjoyed over 40 years as a career securities dealer, retiring as executive vice president, corporate secretary, and board member from BB&T Scott & Stringfellow. Mr. McPherson served with the National Security Dealers Association and was president and chairman of the Securities Dealers of the Carolinas. Upon retirement, he managed a family owned real estate firm, the Walter S. Griffin Company.

He was affiliated with several foundations, including the First Presbyterian Church and the YMCA of Greenville, and was a member of the Society of International Business Fellows, the Poinsett Club, the Carolina Yacht Club, and the Cotillion Club. He is survived by his wife, Nelle Mills Griffin; two daughters; two grandchildren; and extended family.

Ralph B. Shaw SMA ’56 passed away on July 7, 2016. He graduated with an agricultural engineering degree from the University of Georgia and was an engineer with WGTV, Georgia Public Broadcasting. He retired in 1990 from AT&T after a 41year long career as an engineer with the company. Mr. Shaw was an accomplished folk dancer, song writer, and story teller. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; eight children; 11 grandchildren; and extended family.

Dudley F. Nicolosi StA ’58 died 23, 2016. He served in the U.S. Army for two years in Darmstadt, Germany. After owning an antique store and working on the pipelines, he was the sole proprietor of Nicolosi Electric in Plaquemine, La. He was a musician, artist, and gardener. Mr. Nicolosi is survived by his wife, Katherine

Ann “Kattie” Schexnaildre Nicolosi; five children; 12 grandchildren; and extended family.

Bradley Eugene Ragan, Jr. SMA ’65 died January 1, 2017. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was owner/operator of Carolina Tire, chairman and CEO of Brad Ragan Inc., and CEO of Brad Ragan Retreading in Glasgow, Ky., and RDH Tire and Retreading Inc., in Cleveland, N.C. A hunter and fisherman, Mr. Ragan belonged to Arnold Palmer’s Bayhill Club and Lodge in Orlando, Fla., and was a member of Ducks Unlimited, the N.R.A., and the U.S. Golf Association.

He is survived by his three children and four grandchildren.

William “Buzzy” Henry Bowen III SMA ’66, died January 12, 2017. A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps., he attended Alma College and began his career as general manager of American Mine Research and East River Metals. He helped diversify the company and retired as general manager and president from Custom Manufacturing Services. As a manager, he had a knack for instantly putting any person in any situation at ease and making even the toughest work environment full of joy. Mr. Bowen is survived by one brother, one sister, and extended family.

Lon A. Wyatt III SMA ’66 died November 22, 2016. He earned a business degree from Mississippi College and in 1980 graduated from University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy. After retirement, Mr. Wyatt and his wife pursued their dream of travel, living aboard their sailboat in Mexico and the islands of the Eastern Caribbean for seven years, then traveling across the United States and Canada. After years of travel, the couple moved to Gulfport to enjoy retirement.

Mr. Wyatt donated his body to the University of Mississippi for medical research. He is survived by his wife, Susan Thaxton Wyatt, and extended family.

James A. Lord StA ’69 of Alabaster, Ala., died September 29, 2016.

An active member of Montevallo First Baptist Church, he is survived by his wife, Donna Howard Lord; one brother; three stepsons; one granddaughter; and extended family.

Robert Sidney Tarver StA ’69 passed away on September 6, 2016.

Dr. Tarver graduated with honors in zoology from the University of Tennessee where he was president of the honor fraternity, Pi Kappa Alpha. He attended the University of Mississippi Medical School followed by a residency in general surgery and a teaching appointment in the department of surgery at the Veteran’s Hospital in Jackson. He subsequently pursued a surgical career in general and vascular surgery, excelling in minimally invasive surgery. He is survived by his wife, Patti; two stepchildren; four grandchildren; and extended family.

Brian J. McDowell StA ’70 died December 25, 2016. Fondly known as “Coach Mac,” he graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College, where in 2011 he was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame for soccer as their first-ever goal keeper and record holder for the most saves in a single game, most saves for a single season, and a record of 320 saves in two years.

Coach Mac’s 30+-year career included teaching and coaching at schools in Arizona, Georgia, Tennessee, and Louisiana. He started the elementary and peewee wrestling teams in Basile and Johnson’s Bayou in Louisiana. In 1982, he established an invitational wrestling tournament at St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School which continues today as the Mountain Top Tournament. At the time of the school’s merger, Mr. McDowell oversaw the athletic program, taught physical education, and coached.

He supported the American Heart Association for many years by participating in Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart. For over 20 years, he taught and coached at Tracy City Elementary, where he started the wrestling program. The school named their new gym floor, “The Mac” in his honor. Mr. McDowell was dedicated to St. Andrew’s and SAS, missing only two Alumni Weekends due to his illness, and serving as reunion leader most years. He was preceded in death by his father, David McDowell StA ’36, and his brother, Alan McDowell StA ’60. He is survived by his wife, Ciela; two daughters; two grandchildren; his mother; three siblings, including Beverly McDowell StA ’76; and extended family Mark A. Roberts StA ’71 of Main Street, N.C., died January 11, 2017.

He was a graduate of Montana State University and did graduate studies at Austin Peay University and Utica College. A veteran of the Gulf War and Kuwait, Maj. Roberts retired from the U.S. Marine Corps after a 24-year career, serving as a pilot, flight instructor, and flight maintenance instructor. He served as a Presidential pilot. He headed aviation safety for the Navy and Marine helicopter program. He was a member of the Marine Officers Association of America and the N.R.A. and was very dedicated to Notre Dame High School football, where he served as the team photographer. He is survived by his wife, Nanette Parenteau; his mother; two sons; his brother, Christopher Roberts StA ’78, and extended family.

Gary Wayne Jacobs StA '76 died March 10, 2017 in Lincoln County, Tenn. Mr. Jacobs was raised in Sewanee. He worked at Goodman Manufacturing, Inc. in Fayetteville, Tenn., and was previously employed with Shaw Industries for over 20 years. He loved riding his Harley, classic rock music, and spending time with friends and family.

Mr. Jacobs is survived by his fiancée, Pennye Champion; one daughter; and extended family.

David A. Tate StA ’79 of Palmer, Tenn., died on January 4, 2017. He was employed by SEYI America in Tullahoma and was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Tate loved music and played in several bands over the years, including Big Creek, one of his favorites and most famous.

Mr. Tate is survived by his wife, Julia; one son; four daughters; four siblings, including Michael A. Tate StA ’81; and ten grandchildren.

Thomas Reid Ward ’98 died on December. 31, 2016. He was a 2004 graduate of the University of the South and received an advanced degree in 2006 from Peabody College at Vanderbilt University.

He taught at Harpeth Hall in Nashville, served as a counselor for Cumberland Heights, and wrote verse and prose as well as serving in several volunteer organizations. He is survived by his parents, Tom and Peggy Ward; his sister, Sarah Ward Wilkes '99; and extended family.

Reid's family is grateful for the loving support shown him during his 19 years as a quadriplegic.

A Lament

by Reid Ward The barren stance of winter somehow comforts me. Naked sycamore limbs, whiter than polished bones find their way inside the sorrow I feel daily and let me know there’s something else that feels, perhaps, the same – alone.

They’ve lost something as I have.

They’ve lost their transient colors: the baby greens of spring, the deeper, sweaty green that summer brings, and finally the brilliant golden hues of autumn until all that’s left is a bitter breeze, a few cringing animals, and a frigid wooden skeleton of fire.

Amelia Lang Hodges SMS ’63 wrote, “My hubby, Sandy, and I enjoyed a motorcycle trip to Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island this past summer. Side trips included Nackawic, New Brunswick to see the world’s largest axe, Bar Harbour (and lots 'o' lobster!), and one adventurous excursion up Mt. Washington, N.H. on the bike. Now we are eagerly anticipating our trip to Spain and Portugal this fall, and yes on the bike!” Amelia has served as a member of the SAS Alumni Council and 50th Reunion leader. She and Sandy live in Ooltewah, Tenn.

Bill Varnell SMA ’63 wrote with the good news, “My wife Linda and I have a new grandchild: Elizabeth Allen Varnell, 10 lbs 4 oz., born March 12, to Sarah and Daniel Varnell.”

Bill retired several years ago, and he and Linda live in Whitwell, Tenn., where they are both involved in prison ministry. He was on campus in September 2015 when he visited with interim head of school, Judy Chamberlain.

Tom Mucklow StA ’65 and Robert Bartlett StA ’65 are pictured during a visit in January. Tom, on the right, celebrated his birthday with his wife, Jennifer, in Palm Beach, Fla. On the return trip to their home in Martinsburg, W.V., where Tom was an Assistant U.S. Attorney for over 30 years, they had lunch with Robert who drove over to Daytona Beach from his home in Deland, Fla. Tom wrote, “I know it is cliché, but as with several other of my classmates, when Bob and I got together, it seemed as if no time had passed. We picked up right where we left off. The proof of real friendship I believe.” Robert owns and operates an established excavating company in the central Florida area.

1970s Tim Barger SA ’75 wrote, “February first was my first day as minister at First Unitarian Church of Toledo.

I left my position as religion editor of The Blade, Toledo’s daily newspaper, after more than four years there to accept the call of the congregation.”

Tim and his wife, Jewell, live in Toledo.

Congratulations to Daniel O’Connor ’95 who received a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) for his neuroscience research, as announced by the White House on January 9. Established in 1996 by President Bill Clinton, the awards are the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on science and engineering professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.

Phyllis Abel SA ’78 married Steven Deal on Jan. 7, 2016, in Las Vegas.

She wrote, “Steve and I were both widowed. We feel blessed. We will split our time between Maud, Texas due to my teaching at Texarkana College, and our lake house in Yantis, Texas.” Phyllis is a professor of psychology and sociology and Steven retired last fall after 43 years with the Texas electricity company, Luminant.

Daniel received his PhD from Princeton and is currently an assistant professor of neuroscience at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C., where his research focuses on neural circuits for sensory perception, particularly touch, and provides a framework to understand how circuit dysfunction causes mental and behavioral aspects of neuropsychiatric illness.

1990s

Drenn Morgan ’90 was awarded the 2016 Firefighter of the Year by the Cedartown Georgia Exchange Club. He is pictured with his son, Eli, and wife, Dona. The family, which also includes daughters, Darby, Ruby Jane, and Kady Beth, lives in Cave Spring, Ga. Drenn has worked with the Cedartown Fire and Rescue for 15 years.

2000s Victoria Fort ’03 is in her second year of medical school at Hofstra Northwell School of Medicine at Hofstra University in Long Island, N.Y. She plans to specialize in pediatric infectious diseases.

Continuing her love of theater arts, she was a featured performer with a sung ballad at the University’s cultural diversity event in February.

Naomi McKenzie ’04 married Jeremy Greene Dec. 10, 2016, in Jamaica. They live in Cambridge, Mass., where Naomi is finishing her doctorate in clinical psychology and interning at a mental health center. They will move to Pasadena, Calif., where Naomi will begin her work as an intern at Pacific Clinics. Jeremy is an IT systems engineer and cellist. Attending the December nuptials was classmate Jade McBee Barry ’04.

Masumi Ito ’94 lives in Tokyo where she has custody of her niece and nephew and works in aroma, color, and make-up therapy and instruction. She also works as a fortune teller, known as the Cat-Lady!

Kennesia Martin ’05 visited campus in February, bringing with her Femi Badmos, who had attended an SAS summer program but had not been back to campus since 2002. Kennesia is a math teacher with Hamilton County schools and lives in Ringgold, Ga., where she also owns a photography business, Kaptured by Kennesia.

In January, Ashley Lytle ’05 began her position as Assistant Chaplain and Priest at St. Benedict’s Episcopal School in Smyrna, Ga. Ashley received her MDiv from Emory University Candler School of Theology and has served as the youth minister at St. Peter and St. Paul in Marietta, Ga., and St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Dunwoody. She was previously youth minister and curate at Holy Trinity Parish in Decatur, Ga.

Andrew Hard ’06 is a software engineer with Google where he is working on applying machine learning techniques to improve the Google keyboard experience. Following his 2010 graduation with honors from The University of Chicago, Andrew joined CERN in Geneva, Switzerland and the ATLAS Experiment’s successful search for the Higgs boson particle. The work became the basis for his doctoral research.

2010s Storm Hill ’11 and Hannah Wimberley ’12 were married on Dec. 4, 2016 at Sacred Stone in Fayetteville, Tenn. Wedding participants from SAS were bridesmaid Hannah Horton ’12, and groomsmen Elijah Cantrell ’11 and Justin Thomas ’11. Also attending were Allyson Hale ’12, Trevor Laymance ’11, Tyler Privette ’12, and former SAS graphic designer and basketball and softball coach, Paul Ward. Storm and Hannah live in Murfreesboro where Storm is a model line engineer for Nissan and Hannah is a director at a YMCA of Middle Tennessee after school program.

Sarah Galyean Jones ’12 attended the University of Arkansas and currently lives in Memphis, Tenn., where she is an associate editor with Justine Magazine. She debuted her first work of fiction, The Broken Haven, published

by Lands Atlantic Publishing, in April 2016.

Rachel Du ’12 graduates this spring with a degree in pharmaceutical packaging from her five-year program at Rochester Institute of Technology. She heads to England this fall for a one-year master’s program in polymers at the University of Exeter and plans on returning to the states to seek permanent employment.

Julia Cammack ’14, a junior at Pratt Institute, is racking up film credits. Her short documentary, “The Art of Circus,” has been shown at the Prescott Film Festival and the Copa Shorts Film Fest. Internships with MTV Networks, DOC NYC, Film Forum, and Script Doctor have introduced her to such film luminaries as the Coen Brothers.

Denton Marchesoni ’14 stopped by campus in December for the first time since graduation. He is a junior at Middle Tennessee State University working on an aerospace degree in one of the nation’s largest collegiate aviation programs. Denton took flying lessons while attending SAS. He passed his certified flight instructor training last August and is now licensed to instruct other students. He aspires to become a commercial pilot after graduation.

Volunteer Work Weekend Last July’s Volunteer Work Weekend celebrated seven years of campus stewardship. The crew worked on the SAS Farm, painted a faculty apartment, cleaned storage areas, and stained multiple seating areas on Betsy’s Path.

or a family interested in boarding school but not quite ready for their child to be away, SAS now has the perfect option: 5-day boarding. The program, which will welcome its first students in fall 2017, will allow students to focus on their academic work during the week but still have time for family or other off-campus activities and obligations on the weekend. The 5-day boarding option is open to students in grade 8-12.

“We have had an increasing number of requests in recent years for a 5-day boarding option and for expansion of our boarding program to the 8th grade,” said Anneke Skidmore ’05, Director of Admissions.

“Our 5-day boarding program will help us to serve families in the region who are interested in a weekday residential academic program for their child but who are not yet ready for fulltime boarding or who would like a slower transition to fulltime boarding.” Five-day boarding tuition will be $40,000 for the 2017-18 school year. Fulltime boarding tuition is $46,600. Financial aid is available for both options.

Five-day boarding may be especially helpful to the families who have, in recent years, made a daily commute of an hour or more each way to allow their child to attend SAS. Many of these students have had commitments to competitive horseback riding, performing arts organizations, club sports teams, or church activities that made being home on the weekends essential.
