I

have been volunteering with Chattanooga Therapeutic Recreation Services at adaptive rock climbing clinics for the last six years. Catalyst and Climbing Higher are two programs that have given me the opportunity to introduce my favorite sport to a variety of people, kids in particular, who have different forms of disabilities. The best thing about this program is that anyone can participate, regardless of their ability to climb. As a volunteer it is my job to help participants achieve their goals in any way that I can and adapt to each person’s needs to make climbing more accessible for all participants.

Capitalizing on Our Assets

A

s this magazine goes to press, we are completing our periodic reaccreditation with the Southern Association of Independent Schools.

The process of reaccreditation is arduous. Not only did we provide reams of information about programs, procedures, and outcomes, but our team, led by Associate Head of School Kelley Black, conducted a deep dive to plan for the future of the school. Informed by our 2018-2021 Strategic Plan and survey data from parents, students, alumni, and faculty, we identified Karl Sjolund and his dog, Daisy, at this three strategic goals (p. 16-17). year's Blessing of the Animals

We are well on our way on one of those goals, Capitalizing on our Geographic Assets. This year, in addition to our core academic courses, we are offering our students Adventure Education, Place-Based American Studies, Introduction to Field Geology, and Environmental Science, as well as afternoon programs for mountain biking, farming, climbing, and outdoor adventure. We are scheduling more weekend activities that take advantage of our location. Our Middle School students now have daily breaks to enjoy unstructured time outdoors.

The Mountain is a beautiful place, and we want to be sure that our students find challenge, balance, and joy in our surroundings.

In this issue, you will read how Peter Jenkins ’91 continues to find balance in his life thanks to outdoor interests nurtured at SAS (p. 20-22). You will see how Anna Fox ’17 is serving others by spreading the joy of climbing (p. 2-3).

At SAS, it is hard to remember that the average American child only spends 4-7 minutes of unstructured time outside. If you look across campus at lunchtime, you will see students climbing trees, riding bikes, and eating at picnic tables. We help our students to value green time over screen time.

Bishop Wright for Bishop Reynolds

Hubbard Scholarship Program College in High School Thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor, SAS welcomed its first three Hubbard Scholars this year. Hubbard Scholars are boarding students from Shelby County (Memphis) who demonstrate academic promise and leadership ability and whose presence enhances the cultural, ethnic, socio-economic, and/ or racial diversity at SAS. The Hubbard Scholarship is renewed each year provided that the student remains in good academic and disciplinary standing. The scholarships are named for the Rev. Colenzo Hubbard, who has long helped inner city youth in Memphis and who, over the years, has helped SAS to identify and welcome many outstanding students.

This fall, 19 SAS juniors and seniors are enrolled in 24 courses at the University of the South. Thanks to a longstanding agreement between SAS and the University, SAS students can enroll in college classes for free. SAS students learn to hold their own and excel in a college setting with college-aged classmates.

Students also learn to balance a college course workload and to communicate with professors before getting to college.

Each year, approximately 20% of the SAS senior class graduates with college credit.

“In keeping with our mission, Hubbard Scholarships provide opportunities for us to welcome students for whom a world-class college preparatory education in a boarding school setting might be otherwise unavailable,” explained Head of School Karl Sjolund.

To apply or recommend a student, contact the Admission Office (admission@sasweb.org). Students who indicate an interest in being considered for the Hubbard Scholarship will be asked to complete an essay in addition to the regular admission requirements.

This year’s Bishop Reynolds Forum speaker will be the Rt. Rev. Robert Christopher Wright of the Diocese of Atlanta who will deliver a public address in McCrory Hall on the afternoon of Sunday, February 23, 2020 and remain on campus for Monday’s Eucharist and Introduction to Religious Studies classes. Bishop Wright is a veteran of the U. S. Navy, formerly worked for the Children's Defense Fund, and served as chaplain of New York’s Cathedral School. At the time of his election as bishop, he was rector of the historic St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Atlanta.

The Bishop Reynolds Forum brings a prominent speaker to SAS each year to engage students and the community in a topic of current interest. The Forum was established through an endowment in memory of the Rt. Rev. George Reynolds, the late Bishop of Tennessee.

The 2019 Bishop Reynolds Forum speaker was Meredith Walker, who co-created “Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls.”

Helping Parents When you add up the tenure of the SAS faculty, you get centuries of adults helping to raise teenagers. Sharing that knowledge with our parents and staying current on contemporary concerns is an important part of our school-parent partnership. In January 2019, SAS hosted a screening of SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in The Digital Age, a film exploring the impact of screen technology on kids and offering parents and families proven solutions. Following the film, the community engaged in a lively discussion about the issues raised.

This fall, SAS has turned its attention to the dangers of vaping. Working with parents and students, the school has developed a new protocol that focuses on addiction and cessation rather than punishment. Students attended an allschool Chapel on the dangers of vaping and the new intervention process. Parents have received news articles throughout the fall to help them navigate this issue.

Scholastic All-Stars

Harrison Hartman ’20 and Saje Mangru ’20 attended the Tennessee Governor’s School for International Studies at the University of Memphis.

Acceptance to the prestigious summer program comes with a full scholarship to cover program fees.

Sophia Patterson ’19 was named a Finalist in the 2019 National Merit® Scholarship Program.

Gabriel Pongdee ’20 was named a Commended Scholar in the 2020 competition. Sophia, valedictorian of the Class of 2019, is now a freshman at Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas.

Sarah Beth Hobby ’20 was chosen as one of 20 students from across the country to participate in Stanford University's China Scholars Program.

Twenty-seven students received recognition for their performance on the National Spanish Examinations. SAS students receiving top honors included gold medalist Cecilia Schutz ’22; silver medalists Iliana Pate ’22, Justine Rogers ’21, Jayla McLaurin ’20, and Han-

nah Warmbrod ’21, and bronze medalists A.J Clements ’23, Nailah Hamilton ’24, Joshua Jones ’21, Maddie Jones ’22, Anna Money ’21, Shiv Patel ’23, Emily Bailey ’23, and Jonathan Rwalinda ’19.

Nine students earned commendatory awards on the 2019 National Latin Exam. The Cum Laude medal was awarded to Zolon Knoll ’21. Dimitri Sherrill ’24, Nneka Okolo ’20, Elijah Seavey ’22, Mac Croom ’22, and Riley Burnette ’22 earned Magna Cum Laude awards. Reese Michaels ’24, Erin Mattingly ’22, and Kenneth Simmons ’22 earned Silver Maxima Cum Laude honors.

38th Annual Earth Day Celebration Since 1982, SAS has suspended regular classes for one full day each April for a celebration of the environment. Our 2019 Earth Day celebration included a guest lecture by franklin|architects architect and director of design Matt Brown. Matt’s team designed Wade Hall for the Sciences, the school’s award-winning, LEED-certified, academic building. Earth Day celebrations continued with workshops, a picnic feast, and an Earth Day-inspired Creative Expression Assembly during which students shared music, poetry, and skits. The day’s celebrations ended with House Cup Games.

SAS Players Present The SAS Players, under the direction of theater teacher and director Chelsea Padro, recently presented Babka Without Borders, a farce about baked goods, rivalries, and international relations. In February, Chelsea, music teacher and director J.R. Ankney, and SAS students, faculty, and staff will bring The Sound of Music to the stage of McCrory Hall for the Performing Arts.

Other upcoming performing arts events include The Christmas Revels, a program of holiday-themed music and readings, and the spring concert featuring student musicians. This summer, the Sewanee Summer Music Festival will return to McCrory Hall for three performances.

Vienna Pae Cornell joined SAS in the newly created role of full-time, residential Counselor and Counseling Services Coordinator. Alexis Murphy, who lives on campus with her husband, International Student Coordinator and Chinese teacher Marcus Murphy, is now a House Parent. Chelsea Padro joined the faculty as Theater Teacher and Director.

Several people assumed new or additional roles. Former Father Flye Fellow John Wheeler and Alumni and Campaign Assistant Kira Tharp ’12 joined the English faculty. Admission Associate Melissa Askins is teaching math. Academic Administrative Assistant Marin Miller is also Residential Life Coordinator.

Launching the Class of 2019 St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School celebrated the 2018-2019 school year with a weekend of ceremonies culminating in the graduation of the Class of 2019.

The 37 members of the Class of 2019 enrolled in 30 different colleges and universities. Kathryn Bridgers ’19, daughter of Sean Bridgers ’86, received the Head of School’s Award. She is attending Appalachian State University.

The Day Student Award went to Larson Heitzenrater ’19, who is now a freshman at Wofford College. Boarding Student Award recipient Sarah Jane Kemmer ’19 is attending the University of the South.

Valedictorian Sophia Patterson ’19 is at Trinity University (San Antonio) and Salutatorian Sophia Hartman ’19 is attending the University of Richmond.

New Faces SAS welcomed several new faculty and staff members this year. Adjunct Chaplain Regan Schutz, the mother of Cecilia Schutz ’22, is assisting with Chapel and religious studies courses.

Stephen Brehm, husband of Sarah (Askew) Brehm ’00 joined the staff as Assistant Director of Advancement. Sarah is helping out on campus as a part-time nurse. Stephen Thomas and Diana Rinck ’15, daughter of former SAS Spanish teachers Steve and

Monahan Named to IUA Director of College Counseling Dan Monahan was named to the International University Alliance (IUA) High School Counselor Advisory Board.

The IUA collaborates with U.S. institutions to create pathways to college for international students. Members of the High School Counselor Advisory Board provide input to the IUA on the student experience and educational trends, as well as helping IUA to identify new partnerships. In addition to his IUA involvement, Dan is an active member of the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling and the National Association for College Admission Counseling.

Smith Named Interim Dean of Students

Rotary Partnership In spring 2019, the Monteagle-Sewanee Rotary Club and SAS enhanced their relationship by forming an Interact Club, Rotary’s youth leadership development organization. Club members have already organized two events, a community Easter egg hunt and a fundraiser for Hurricane Dorian relief. The Interact Club also lent their labor to a fundraising dinner for the Friends of the University Farm. Members Abi Cassell ’21, Aidan Smith ’20, and Charlie Barron ’22 recently spoke to the Monteagle-Sewanee club. The club’s faculty sponsor is Head of School Karl Sjolund.

Jenna Black ’21, Nathan King ’21, Sarah Grace Burns ’21, Porter Neubauer ’21, Myers Gorrell ’21, and Hannah Warmbrod ’21 attended this year’s Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) at Camp Nakanawa in Crossville, Tenn.

A Welcome Storm SAS was delighted to welcome Julia "Hurricane Hawkins" to campus for an evening talk in partnership with the Friends of South Cumberland State Park. The 103-year old, who wowed the

world this summer as the oldest participant in the Senior Olympic games in New Mexico, spoke on “How Nature's Magic Moments Can Keep You Young.” Hawkins, the mother of former SAS Public Relations Director Margaret Matens and grandmother of Morgan Matens ’00 and Murray Matens Kimball ’02, received widespread publicity this summer following the Senior Olympics. She was highlighted by all major news networks, has been featured on NPR, in the New York Times and Runners World, and has appeared three times in Sports Illustrated.

History department chair Geoffrey Smith is serving as Interim Dean of Students for the 20192020 school year. Smith, who holds the Fort Chair in Writing at SAS, joined the faculty in 2014. He has served as a lead house parent, assistant coach, and grade level program leader, has introduced several elective courses to the curriculum, and has been an inexhaustible source of curricular innovation. Last year, he was elected by his fellow faculty members to be their representative to the school’s Board of Trustees. Smith formerly taught at All Saints' Academy in Winter Haven, Florida where he was chair of the History Department. He is a graduate of the University of the South.

Shakerag Workshops Offers Three Weeks of Creativity Entering its 17th year, Shakerag Workshops now offers three weeks of creative activity for adults. The programs begin on June 11, 2020 with a Knitting Getaway with hosts Ann Shayne and Kay Gardiner of Mason Dixon Knitting and continues with two weeklong sessions with instructors from around the world offering classes in jewelry making, photography, clay, painting, printmaking, book arts, mixed media, and new media. Participants stay on campus and enjoy delicious locally-sourced meals and activities such as hikes, yoga classes, and swimming in the campus lake. The Knitting Getaway is already full, but spaces are still available for Shakerag Sessions II and III. More information is available online at sasweb.org/shakerag.

Ethics Bowl State Champions SAS’s first-ever Ethics Bowl team was named Tennessee state champions in February 2019 and went on to the national championship at the Parr Center for Ethics at UNCChapel Hill in April 2019. The team included Justine Rogers ’21, Sophia Patterson ’19, Sarah Beth Hobby ’20, and Jayla McLaurin ’20 and was coached by history department chair and current interim Dean of Students Geoffrey Smith. At the state meet, the SAS team won the award for Dialectical Excellence.

Like many student activities at SAS, Ethics Bowl began at the instigation of a student. Sophia learned about the opportunity at Governor’s School and proposed putting together a team. The students gathered on Sundays throughout the fall and early winter to prepare cases. Cases discussed at the state competition included private money in academia, China’s social credit system, gerrymandering, and organ transplant allocation. The team presented or commented on a total of 12 different cases during the daylong competition.

Sports Highlights FALL 2018 MOUNTAIN BIKING Top SAS finishers at the 2018 Tennessee Interscholastic Cycling League State Championships included Finn Michler ’21 (JV Boys: 5th), Aidan Smith ’20 (Varsity: 3rd), Zolon Knoll ’21 (Sophomore Boys: 5th), and Libby Neubauer ’23 (8th Grade Girls: 2nd). Libby also finished 2nd overall among 8th grade girls for the season.

WINTER 2019

SWIMMING The boys’ varsity swim team finished as Middle Tennessee High School Swimming Association’s Division I Champions.

The girls’ team finished as Runner-Up. The boys’ relay team of Aidan Smith ’20, Randy Paul ’19, Zolon Knoll ’21, and Porter Neubauer ’21 set new school records in the 200 Free and 200 Medley Relays. All four boys qualified for the regional and state tournament. They were joined at regionals by teammates Kathleen Perkins ’22, Sarah Grace Burns ’21, Sarah Beth Hobby ’20, Sophia Patterson ’19, and Anna Freyland ’21. Kathleen set a new school record in the Girls’ 100 IM.

The girls’ middle school relay team of Maya Mauzy ’25, Libby Neubauer ’23, Reese Michaels ’24, and Loulie Frazier ’25 set school records in the 200 Free, 400 Free, and 200 Medley Relays.

Libby also added her name to the record book in the 200 Free and 100 Back. Loulie set a Girls’ 500 Free record. Fifteen swimmers qualified for the middle school championship meet. Three swimmers advanced to the finals. Jackson Frazier ’24 finished 10th in the Boys’ 500 free and 4th in the Boys’ 100 Breast, AJ Clements ’23 finished 10th in the Boys’ 100 Back, and Libby finished 14th in the Girls’ 200 Free.

WRESTLING Boasting the only girls’ wrestling program at a Tennessee private school, SAS had two wrestlers, Iliana Pate ’22 and Charlie Barron ’22, place 5th at regionals in their weight classes. Melanie Val ’24 and Julia Sumpter ’25 qualified to compete in the Middle School TN AAU Girls Wrestling State tournament. Julia finished in 4th place at 85 lbs. and Melanie finished in 2nd place at 100 lbs.

BASKETBALL The Middle School boys’ basketball team finished 11-3 and in second place in the Big 8 Tournament and Big 8 Conference. All-Conference picks included Madison King ’23, Lucy Cassell ’23, and Nailah Hamilton ’24 for the girls and Kyler Cantrell ’23, Ethan Hargis ’23, and Spears Askew ’23 for the boys. Kyler, Ethan, and Ryan Ostrowski ’23 received All-Tournament honors. Spears was selected for All-Defense honors. All seven players were chosen to participate in the All-Star Games.

Nneka Okolo ’20 was named to the All-District Girls’ Varsity Basketball Team, and Jalen Tillman ’19 was named to the boys’ team.

SPRING 2019

VOLLEYBALL The middle school volleyball team finished the season 8-1 and first in their conference. They were runners-up in the Mountain Valley Volleyball Tournament. Lucy Cassell ’23, Madison King ’23, and Ava Carlos ’23 were named to the all-district team.

SOCCER The varsity boys’ soccer team finished 4th in the district.

Gabriel Stevens ’19 and Aidan Smith ’20 were named to the alldistrict team.

TENNIS The girls’ varsity tennis team finished 7-4 and 4th in the district. Anna Post ’20 and Tessa Shackelford ’20 earned All-District Team honors.

TRACK AND FIELD Isabelle Gordy ’20 placed 1st in discus in the region and 3rd in the state. Davis Gill ’19 finished 2nd in the district in the triple jump and 7th in the state. The girls’ track team was runner-up in the district. Isabelle set a new school discus record. Anna Freyland ’21 set a new record in the 800 m. The 4x400 relay team of Anna, Charlie Barron ’22, Cecilia Schutz ’22, and Sarah Grace Burns ’21 also set a new school record.

HONORING OUR BIGGEST FANS Dan and Carolyn Hatfield were honored with a plaque on the occasion of their younger grandson’s final season at SAS. The Hatfields have been tremendous supporters of SAS athletics, cheering on their grandsons, Andrew ’15 and Larson Heitzenrater ’19, and their grandsons' teammates and classmates.

FALL 2019 CROSS COUNTRY Having reliably crossed the finish line among the top five runners all season, Charlie Strippel ’22 placed 4th in the region for cross country and 27th in the state.

GOLF Under the guidance of coach Stephen Thomas, the varsity golf team finished 4th in the district. The four members of the team, Luca Malde ’23, Nathan King ’21, Tyler Rodgers ’22, and Robert Graham ’20, qualified for the regional tournament. The team’s home course, The Course at Sewanee, was named the #17 college course in the country.

MOUNTAIN BIKING One of the first varsity mountain biking programs in the state, the team hosted their 7th state championship.

Close to 400 riders participated, including 21 SAS riders. Top finishers for SAS included Evan Fox ’20 in 3rd place among JV boys, Libby Neubauer ’23 in 1st place among JV girls, and Madeline Sumpter ’23 in 5th place among freshman girls. Libby also finished 3rd for the season among freshman girls.

FOOTBALL Cameron Robinson ’22 and Cailan McLean ’20 were named to the 8-man Extreme Allstar Football Team.

SOCCER The varsity girls’ soccer team finished fourth in the district and qualified for the regional tournament. Sarah Beth Hobby ’20 and Sarah Grace Burns ’21 received All-District Honors.

t. Andrew’s-Sewanee School’s vision challenges the community to celebrate this place, consider carefully what and how we communicate, foster resourcefulness by engaging in real work in the real world, value the many voices in the school community, and consider the health and well-being of individuals and the school in all decision making.

In spring 2019, teachers Marion Knoll and Dr. Viva Reynolds brought these goals together for a collaborative Science 7/Technology 7 final project. Students assessed the natural resources on the school’s 550-acre campus, analyzed the potential environmental impacts of the school’s proposed Campus Master Plan, and developed and presented recommendations in a Natural Resource Assessment and Campus

Master Plan Impact Report. In the process, they learned science, math, technology, and presentation skills.

To begin the five-week project, Ms. Knoll and Dr. Reynolds reviewed basic geometry, measuring, unit conversion, and mapping skills to help teams of students to interpret campus maps divided into zones. The teams assessed predominant land cover types in each zone and researched environmental issues affecting those landscapes. Students then developed a master chart of areas "worth protecting" with rationales rooted in environmental science. Students crossreferenced their chart with the Campus Master Plan and focused on three main areas that could be impacted by new construction. They then researched and recommended modifying plans for the proposed building sites.

The students prepared to present their findings and recommendations. During the last class session, students worked on presentation skills. The final presentations, delivered in the manner and attire of scientists and consultants, were attended by school administrators and members of the Board of Trustees.

In the process of the project, in addition to learning basic environmental science and scientific methods, the students were taught to use Google Apps including Earth, Sheets, Docs, and Slides.

Anja Dombrowski, one of the students in the class, appreciated having an assignment with real-world implications.

“Speaking in front of people is difficult for me,” she said. “But I enjoyed the challenge of presenting my work to people who could really make a difference in the decisions that were being made.”

Goals for School Improvement SAS

recently completed reaccreditation with the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS).

The multi-year process began with a thorough report of how SAS meets hundreds of SAIS-required standards and indicators related to mission, leadership, academics, and communication.

Simultaneously to this, administrators and faculty established teams to conduct a deep self-study and develop Goals for School Improvement, which build on the school's 2018-21 Strategic Plan.

With input from students, parents, faculty, and alumni, the faculty teams developed a road map for ongoing school improvement.

In early November, a team of educators visited the school to review the school report, see our school in action, and speak with students, parents, alumni, faculty, and staff.

The identified Goals for School Improvement, articulated in the school report, form the basis for our work moving forward.

ETER JENKINS ’91 and his mother moved from New Rochelle, New York to a farm in the foothills of the Cumberland Mountains when Peter was nine years old. The only child of a single mom, Peter was a city boy in the country. A black kid with a white mom. A northerner in the South.

When Peter was ready for high school, concerned about the quality of the local public schools, his mom suggested boarding school. The minute he stepped onto the St. Andrew’sSewanee campus, Peter knew it was the right place for him.

Although it was no longer the school of the Brothers of the Holy Cross, Peter was like many of the boys who had come to St. Andrew’s before him – an Appalachian farm kid without a father in his life. He just happened to be an Appalachian farm kid who had started his life in the suburbs of New York City.

Peter threw himself into life at SAS. He developed a rich network of friends. He ran cross country, wrestled, enjoyed rock climbing, and immersed himself in the arts program, especially ceramics.

He loved the small school setting and the opportunity to get to know his teachers outside of the classroom. When his senior year came, he hoped to continue his education at a college with a similar type of intimate community. He sought a college that would allow him to continue to pursue a well-balanced education that involved academic, arts, athletics, and the outdoors. He was happy to find that, like SAS, Williams College fostered deep connections between students and teachers and valued a well-rounded educational experience.

“Many of my college classmates struggled with their newfound independence,” remembers Peter. “Because I had been a

boarding student, I was ready for it. I was able to manage the responsibility of balancing academics, athletics, and my social life without an imposed structure.”

At Williams, Peter majored in art and political science, and his interest in ceramics developed into an interest in sculpture.

“Art became an important way for me to explore identity. At college, I was able to use my love of creating art to explore the politics of identity and write about community.”

That interest in community included a passion for social justice and a commitment to public service. He returned to SAS in the summers to work as a counselor for a camp that welcomed students from the Bronx and a Lakota reservation. After graduation, he joined Teach for America and taught second and third grade at an inner-city school in Baltimore.

During his three years in Baltimore, Peter was struck by how the health needs of his students affected their academic performance. He started to wonder if the best use of his talents would be to find a way to serve the public thorugh the health professions.

Art became an important way for me to explore identity Peter enrolled in a program at Temple University that prepared him for medical school. He was accepted to the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, one of the top medical schools in the world and entered medical school intending to become a pediatrician.

"But I fell in love with surgery. It combined my interest in sculpture and art with the physicality of athletics and martial arts. I loved the way surgeons often communicated and coordinated their movements without needing to speak."

After 11 years studying, interning, and working in Philadelphia hospitals, Peter pursued further training in research at the University of Michigan as a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar. He is now an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Indiana University in Indianapolis. He balances his time between caring for trauma patients and working with the Indiana Department of Health to examine and improve the healthcare outcomes of critically injured patients.

His work supports his social justice interests. While trauma cuts across communities, it disproportionately affects those who are socioeconomically disadvantaged. “We invest a lot of resources at designated trauma centers, but the majority of patients are initially treated at rural hospitals. I am looking for ways to provide support to hospitals that are systematically neglected.”

Peter has found ways to provide his six-year-old son with some of the experiences he valued at SAS. He, his wife, and child live on an acre of land in the middle of the woods but in a neighborhood they sought out for its diversity. His son attends a small school that is connected to the land and offers opportunity for creative expression and athletics. Rock climbing and gardening are important family activities and provide Peter with an opportunity to relax after a stressful day.

By example, he is showing his son the importance of community service, not just in his workday, but as a member of the alumni board of Teach for America. “I look for opportunities to teach my son to practice decency and grace. I share my feelings with him honestly about my work and why it’s important to me. We look for opportunities to incorporate service in his life.”

in a way that valued community and responsibility,” Peter explains. “That was one of the many lessons I learned on the farm. I hauled rocks to build the foundation of my neighbor’s house. We looked out for each other and had a responsibility to our community and a sense of service.” Those values were reinforced as a boarder at SAS. Like a rock climber setting his course, each step in Peter’s life has opened up new opportunities for reaching a little farther and higher. Ceramics provided the foothold that took him to sculpture, which led him to become a surgeon.

A childhood in the outdoors gave Peter a solid base for finding a continuous joy and peace in nature that he now passes on to his son. And, experiences in caring communities led him to find new communities needing his care.

We loved our time in high school – maybe it is the small school size that allowed us to be

ifty years ago, the first coed class graduated from Sewanee Military Academy. The decision to allow women to attend SMA would alter the trajectories of the lives of many, especially Barbara Reid Bedford SMA ’69 and Henry Bedford SMA ’69.

Maybe it is the small school size that allowed us to be friends with everyone, maybe it’s that time in your life when everything is new and fun,” Barbara reminisces. Their education and romance continued at the University of the South. Barbara was among the first class of four-year women to graduate from the University.

Barbara, who grew up in Sewanee, descends from four generations of stone masons who quarried and cut the sandstone of “the Mountain” to construct the beautiful gothic buildings for which Sewanee is known. Her father was the master stone mason on All Saints’ Chapel. Like her St. Mary’s School classmates, Barbara had an eye for the cadets of SMA. When the Community of St. Mary withdrew from running St. Mary’s School, the heartbreak of its closing in 1968 was lessened by the opportunity to join the cadets on their campus.

The summer of his junior year of college, Henry signed on as a door-to-door Bible salesman with The Southwestern Company. He saw it as an adventure and as a break from the past salaried jobs he had had. With Southwestern he could run his own business. That summer he earned enough money to pay the tuition for his senior year.

Henry, who grew up in Dallas, traveled a bit farther to get to SMA. “I was sent to military school, because I was getting into a lot of trouble,” Henry admits. “I arrived on a foggy day.

My father and I had visions of checking in at school and then going out for a nice dinner.” Instead, they were met by someone who took Henry’s trunk and told his father, “Thank you, Dr. Bedford. We’ll take it from here.”

Barbara and Henry met just one week after enrolling. Henry had noticed the cute girl sitting in front of him in history class. A mutual friend set them up on a blind date. And the rest, as they say, is history. “We loved our time in high school.

After their Sewanee graduation, Henry and Barbara moved to Indiana to sell Bibles again. While Barbara made a home for the couple, Henry was selling, selling, selling. Henry worked 80 hours a week. “I learned to work with rejection and learned to work with people. I learned to keep a schedule and be honest.” He likens the training to preparing

friends with everyone, maybe it’s that time in your life when everything is new and fun.

for athletic competition – focus on the basics and do what the leadership tells you. “Sales is more about being disciplined and having a service attitude than anything else.”

Soon, Henry supplemented his SMA, Sewanee, and Southwestern educations with a graduate degree from Southern Methodist University. Barbara worked two jobs to support them while Henry earned his MBA. Not long after graduation, Henry returned to Southwestern. The company was looking for someone to work in business development. They liked to hire people who knew the business from the ground up and who believed in the same principles.

Henry grew with Southwestern, and Southwestern grew with Henry. When he

arrived in 1972, Southwestern was a Bible sales company with $12 million in annual revenue. It is now a conglomerate of 20 companies offering investment advisory services, publishing, sales consulting, search services, visa services, and more. They no longer sell Bibles, but they do sell educational products door-to-door with a focus on helping young people achieve the skills they need in life. The workforce has diversified from American college kids to students from around the world. Annual revenue is close to $400 million. Henry, who served as CEO from 2006 to 2018, is chairman of the company.

While Henry helped build the business, Barbara built the family. The Bedfords have four children, Hank, Elizabeth, Khaki, and Logan. Barbara worked outside of the home off-and-on but became a full-time mom after their second child was born. Over the years she has partnered with Henry in helping other young people achieve their goals through what is now the Southwestern Family of Companies. “She’s amazing,” Henry enthuses. “We have dinners at our home for our employees and associates, and she never hires a caterer.”

Her record is a sit-down dinner for 65 people. She travels to meetings and forms deep relationships with spouses and team members who have become the couple's close friends.

ast year, Barbara devoted her organizational skills to helping to do something special for their 50th SMA reunion. “I knew we wanted to do something to commemorate this milestone in our lives. We are in touch with a lot of our classmates, but also had lost touch with many. I called our reunion chairs, Mike Flannes and Allen Brooks, and asked if they minded me doing an email to everyone to get updates and create something for us all.”

Mike and Allen loved the idea. Barbara’s plan was to make a printed photo book for every returning member of the class and include their stories. She added old photos from previous reunions and the biographical updates that everyone submitted. All of the reunion attendees made contributions to the project.

“The book turned out amazing,” Barbara admits. “We were so excited that everyone was truly appreciative of our efforts, and we know that they will look back at the book often.”

Many of the updates from classmates included mention of retirement, but don’t ask Henry when he plans to retire. He doesn’t consider what he does to be work. “Work is digging ditches. At the Southwestern Family of Companies we help people achieve their goals in life. What could be more fun than that?”

Retirement hardly seems necessary. While still working, Henry has motorcycled across Canada and to Peru and Alaska and has sailed his own boat to Panama. He built a homeless shelter, and he and Barbara are helping rescue North Korean refugees. Barbara has visited 61 countries. Every other Christmas they take the entire family, 10 adults and six grandchildren, on vacation. Henry and Barbara believe that travel with family, helping others in need, and pursuing adventure are the best ways to spend accumulated wealth.

SAS hopes that those travels frequently bring them back to the Mountain where it all began. Fifty-one years since their first date and 46 years since they said, “I do,” Henry and Barbara remain the great romance of that first co-educational class at SMA.

In Memoriam

Alumni J. Parham Werlein, Jr. SMA ’40 died May 4, 2019. Mr. Werlein attended LSU and graduated with a BA from Tulane University. He is survived by his wife, Lise Anne Hartson Werlein; three daughters; two stepchildren; and their families.

Association. In 1972, he became the Associate Rector at The Church of Saint John the Divine in Houston. He retired from full-time ministry after 19 years and moved to Spartanburg, where he served for four years at The Episcopal Church of the Advent. He is survived by his four children, three grandchildren, and their families.

Donald M. Berger StA ’44 died February 24, 2019. Mr. Berger’s abiding love was Boy Scout Troop 109, where he served as Scout Master for 27 years and as a dedicated volunteer for years following. He was the first ever recipient of the Hillsborough County Commissioners' Lonnie Lee Napier Award for outstanding contributions to his community. He is survived by two children and their families.

Frank Marshall Perry, Jr. SMA ’46 died July 13, 2019. He was born in Toledo, Ohio but spent his childhood in Pampa, Texas. He was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy. Mr. Perry was instrumental in establishing the SMA Class of 1946 Junior Leadership Award that is presented each Honors Day to a rising SAS senior.

He is survived by his wife, Marge; two children; and their families.

Stuart F. Martin SMA ’44 died on February 2, 2019. During the Korean War, he served as a platoon leader with the 21st Infantry Regiment and the 6th Tank Battalion. He later served a second tour in Korea and another in Vietnam. Mr. Martin taught ROTC at the University of Pennsylvania and earned his master’s degree in petroleum engineering at the University of Kansas. He is survived by his wife, Betty Hilton Martin; his daughter; and her family.

Paul O. Crick, Jr. StA ’47 died September 15, 2019. Mr. Crick was born in Monteagle, Tenn. After a tour with the U.S. Army, he worked in the civil service branch of the U.S. government until his retirement in 1984. Mr. Crick is survived by his wife, Betty; two daughters; and their families.

Arthur Page Sloss, Jr. SMA ’44 died August 28, 2019. Mr. Sloss joined the Merchant Marines and sailed the world during some of the most perilous years of World War II. Shortly after his discharge, he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He is survived by his wife, Caroline Lowrey Sloss; his brother; three daughters; and their families.

Claudius Augustus Street, Jr. SMA ’44 died March 22, 2017. He was an airplane pilot and was a salesman most of his life. He is survived by his four children, three grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.

Giles Floyd Lewis, Jr. SMA ’45 died November 19, 2018. He graduated from Clemson University in 1949 and enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Father Lewis earned his M.Div. from the University of the South and served numerous parishes in South Carolina. He was president of the Laurens County Mental Health

Tesch Brundick SMA ’48 died April 12, 2019. Mr. Brundick attended Stetson University and served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Stockton Blount Brundick; his former wife, Margaret Hodson Drew Brundick; three daughters; four grandchildren; and extended family.

George B. Dismore SMA ’48 died August 4, 2019. He worked at Florida National Bank which later became First Union and was an active member in the Exchange Club. Mr. Dismore is survived by his wife, Joan Mynihan Dismore; his sister; and his two sons.

Charles R. Godchaux SMA ’48 died July 10, 2019. He graduated from Vanderbilt University and joined the U.S Navy. He began his professional career in the family business, Louisiana State Rice Milling Company, where he ultimately became Chairman of the Board. After subsequent mergers, he became vice president of Riviana Foods, Inc. and vice chair for both the U.S.A. rice division and worldwide rice operations. Mr. Godchaux’s philanthropic interests included the National Audubon Society and the Louisiana Nature Conservancy.

He is survived by his wife, Dolores Nunez Godchaux; two daughters; an adopted daughter; and their families.

Frederick E. Ludwig StA ’48 died April 15, 2018. He attended San Diego State University. He valued his career as a teacher, coach, and counselor with San Diego City School District for twenty-seven years. Mr. Ludwig is survived by his four children, many grandchildren and greatgrandchildren, and extended family.

Harold L. Sebring Jr., SMA ’48 died on January 20, 2019. He attended the University of Florida and graduated from Florida State University. After a life of travel, Mr. Sebring began competitive shooting in sporting clay and was the first American to win a gold medal in the European FITASC Championships. He won countless national and international competitions including the USSCA National Sporting Clays Championship.

He is survived by his son, his daughterin-law, and his granddaughter.

George E. Wilkinson StA ’48 died December 2, 2018 and was buried with military honors. He graduated from Middle Tennessee State University before joining the U.S. Air Force. He graduated with a degree in engineering from the University of Texas and transferred to the missile program at Cape Canaveral.

He also earned an MBA from UCLA. Later in life, Mr. Wilkinson owned a large cattle ranch in Cowan, Tenn.

He is survived by his daughter; son, Andrew Wilkinson StA ’79; grandchildren; and extended family.

Patricia West Lessig SMS ’49 died May 14, 2019. She attended the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Mrs. Lessig is survived by her husband, Lester Lessig, Jr.; her four children; and six grandchildren.

Robert P. Shapard III SMA ’49 died March 14, 2019. He earned a degree in textile engineering from North Carolina State University. Mr. Shapard served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, helping to design textile materials such as flight suits for pilots.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; four children; and many grandchildren.

James W. Sherrill StA ’49 died Jan. 17, 2019. He retired from the

University of the South, where he worked as an assistant manager of the Sewanee Laundry, a police officer, and in the Sewanee Post Office. He is survived by seven children, eight grandchildren, and extended family.

Robert H. Laiti StA ’50 died June 7, 2019. Mr. Laiti was the owner and operator of the Skol House Restaurant of Bayport, Minn. He is survived by three children, six grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

Thomas F. Armstrong, Jr. SMA ’51 died June 9, 2019. Although he was offered a football scholarship by Clemson and recruited by Georgia Tech, Mr. Armstrong followed his dream to attend the University of Notre Dame to play football. He graduated in 1955 and joined the U.S. Air Force, where he became a jet pilot and flight instructor. He worked for Owens-Corning in Ohio for 25 years and related companies in Kentucky until his retirement in 1999.

Mr. Armstrong is predeceased by his first wife, Mary Ellen McDonald; and survived by his second wife, Mary Armstrong; three daughters; two stepchildren; and extended family.

Sara Treadwell Dudney SMS ’51 died March 28, 2019. Ms. Dudney studied French at Agnes Scott College and Sorbonne Université. She returned to Sewanee to raise her four sons, volunteer in the community, and serve as the assistant editor of The Sewanee Review Quarterly. She was instrumental in the formation of St. Andrew’s-Sewanee and served on the Board of Trustees from 1984-1994 and the Board of Advisors from 1995-1998.

After fire destroyed her home during the 1985 ice storm, she and her family donated the home's sandstone to build the SAS front entrance. Ms. Dudney is survived by sons Thomas Dudney Ham SA ’76, Lee Edward Ham StA ’77, John Ham Fairbanks StA ’81, and James Ham Treadwell ’83; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Robert Nash “Pete” Higgins SMA ’51 died Aug. 21, 2019. He attended The University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill and was a four-year letterman on the swim team. He received a BS in business administration and a MEd. His career as an educator and coach

spanned 57 years at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta. Mr. Higgins created the first year-round swim team in Georgia. He received national and state recognition, including two National High School Federation National Coach of the Year awards and the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Circle of Achievement Award. Mr. Higgins is survived by his wife, Nell Ferguson Higgins; his daughter; and four grandchildren.

William J. Pettis, Sr. StA ’51 died February 25, 2019. He attended Clemson University. After retiring, Mr. Pettis and his wife opened their own furniture consignment store, Second Edition in Sugarland, Texas. He is survived by five children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Charles F. Wiehrs, Jr. SMA ’51 died October 30, 2018. His career in banking was with First Florida Banks. He retired as Senior Vice President. He is survived by his wife, Joan Rowe Wiehrs; two daughters; and three grandchildren.

Elizabeth W. “Betty” Beckwith SMS ’52 died August 23, 2019.

She graduated from The Women’s College of North Carolina (now UNC-Greensboro), received a master’s in special education from George Washington University, and taught first grade and special education for 38 years. She was Teacher of the Year at Howe Hall in Berkeley County, S.C. She is survived by her sister, husband, three children, and their families.

Hubert Reid Jones SMA ’53 died June 2, 2019. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Mr. Jones wanted to ensure that wild ducks could always thrive in healthy habitats and held numerous leadership positions with Ducks Unlimited, serving as North Carolina State Chairman and National Trustee. He was inducted into the N.C. Ducks Unlimited Hall of Fame. He is survived by his wife, Veda R. Jones; three children; two stepchildren; and grandchildren.

Lloyd G. Spivey, Jr. SMA ’53 died June 10, 2019. Mr. Spivey entered the University of Mississippi under a Naval ROTC scholarship and ultimately obtained his law degree in 1963.

After serving in the U.S. Marines, he joined his father’s law firm which led

to his own firm focusing on oil and gas production. In 1996, Mr. Spivey and his son opened Spivey & Spivey Law Firm. He also founded Diamond Energy Corporation and Rainbow Development. He is survived by his wife, Mary Smith Spivey; his children; and 13 grandchildren.

James Foster Watts, Jr. SMA '54 and former SAS Trustee, died on October 22, 2019. Mr. Watts served as an officer in the U.S. Army Infantry. He earned his MS from Georgia Tech in Industrial Management. He was employed in Atlanta by Arthur Andersen for ten years before being hired by Guilford Mills in Greensboro, N.C., where he retired as Senior Vice President in 1990. Mr. Watt’s hobbies included gardening, salmon fishing, reading, traveling, and attending the Masters Golf Tournament. He was a member of All Saints Episcopal Church where he served on the Vestry for three years. He also served on a variety of boards including CSI and Rosboro Lumber Co. Mr. Watts was one of the first SMA graduates to embrace St. Andrew's-Sewanee School and supported the school with his time, leadership, and financial generosity.

He served as a trustee from 1993 to 2006. Watts House, one of the school's student residences, is named in honor of his family and with gratitude for his significant contributions to the Cornerstone Campaign. He is survived by his wife, Tevis Long; two children; four grandchildren, and his sisters. Continuing his support of SAS, Mr. Watt's family has asked that contributions be made in his memory to St. Andrews-Sewanee.

Samuel D. Axelrad SMA ’56 died May 20, 2019. Dr. Axelrad graduated from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service in Vietnam as Captain of the First Air Cavalry Forward Medical Command. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Axelrad; three children; and grandchildren.

Thomas L. Brice StA ’56 died August 30, 2019. He was a folk artist, poker player, and golfer. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Mr. Brice worked with his family to start Brice Inc., and eventually formed his own business, Brice Land Clearing. In between, he

held many jobs including maintaining the facilities and coaching wrestling at St. Andrew’s. He is survived by his wife, Berta Joan, and seven children.

Timothy F. Woodbridge SMA ’56 died June 9, 2019. Mr. Woodbridge graduated from Amherst College and Yale Law School. He was an enthusiastic amateur music historian and had a radio show at the University of Hartford in the 1970s.

Where he played obscure traditional music tracks and related relevant historical facts. He is survived by his sister, two children, two stepchildren, and five grandchildren.

Vera P. Jarman SMS ’57 died April 2, 2019. Her family lived in Sewanee and ran an apple orchard until she was 14, when they moved to Aurora, Ill. Mrs. Jarman became an x-ray technician, working at the Dreyer Clinic in Aurora for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Donald T. Jarman, and her son.

Henry R. Merritt SMA ’57 died December 17, 2018. He was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves for six years serving in the medical corps. He is survived by many nieces and nephews.

Edward D. Muir, Jr. SMA ’59 died November 8, 2018. Mr. Muir attended Southwestern University and Oklahoma University. He proudly served and was honorably discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps. He is survived by three siblings and several nieces and nephews.

E. “Gene” Sentell SMA ’59 died April 15, 2019. He graduated from Tulane University with an MBA and became a CPA, before serving his country in France and Germany with the U.S. Army.

After being discharged, he ran with the bulls in Pamplona. He and his wife, Dianna, lived on a Bahamian island before returning to Shreveport to raise a family.

Michael D. Gracy SMA ’60 died January 3, 2019. He graduated from Wichita State University with a degree in business administration, attended the U. S. Naval officer candidate school, and served in the Vietnam War as a First

Lieutenant. He worked for 48 years with Prudential financial services.

Mr. Gracy is survived by, his wife, Susan Shaw Gracy; his children; grandchildren; and three siblings..

Kent V. Lenhard SMA ’60 died August 23, 2018. Mr. Lenhard knew at age 14 that he wanted to become an architect. His seven years of college included the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Arizona, and Cal-Berkeley. His career included projects for Intel, Hewlett Packard, and Lockheed, ultimately focusing on designs for highly specialized clean rooms for microchip production in Silicon Valley. He is survived by his wife, Linda Forney.

Raphael Benjamin West, Jr. SMA ’60 died March 30, 2019.

He served for 26 years in the Tennessee House of Representatives, representing the 60th District. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis West; four children; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Edward E. Strain SMA ’61 died September 29, 2019. He graduated from The University of Georgia with a BA in political science and history, and a law degree. Through decades of practicing law, Mr. Strain was known and respected for his diligence and compassion.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Alice Woods Strain; son; two grandsons; and extended family.

F. Lamar McMillin SMA ’62 died December 3, 2018. He received a BA from the University of the South, and an MA from the University of Arkansas. He was a masterful photographer and donated several photographs to St. Andrew’s-Sewanee.

Robert L. Singer, Jr. SMA ’62 died February 26, 2019. He earned his bachelor's degree from Louisiana State University. Mr. Singer is survived by his wife, Cheryl Johnson Singer; four children; and eight grandchildren.

George J. Wing, Jr. StA ’62 died January 21, 2019. Mr. Wing enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving with the rank of sergeant as a ground radio communications equipment

repairman. His love of cars and all that came with them included an infamous trip in a VW van. He was regional manager for Good Guys, Inc., overseeing 78 stores, and commercial sales manager for Ultimate Electronics. He is survived by his wife, Mary J. Wing; two children; and two granddaughters.

Thomas B. Buffington SMA ’63 died January 8, 2019. He studied real estate and insurance at The University of Arkansas and was founder and chairman of Buffington Homebuilding Group. Mr. Buffington is survived by his wife, Dee; four children; and many grandchildren.

Annie P. Moore Manderson SMS ’65 died September 11, 2017. Mrs. Moore was a lifelong resident of Tuscaloosa. Survivors include her husband, Wilbur; two children; two grandchildren; and extended family.

Joseph L. Ramsey, Jr. SMA ’65 died on January 4, 2019. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force, working as a radio and television production specialist, a role that perfectly suited his love of music and gregarious personality. Mr. Ramsey is survived by his wife, Olivia Ramsey; seven children; 11 grandchildren; and extended family.

Harry P. Mullen, Jr. SMA ’66 died January 26, 2019. He graduated from Guilford College with a major in psychology and spent his working years as a computer technician with a Maryland nonprofit direct mail company near Washington, D.C. He is survived by his wife, Linda.

John A.M. Chitty SMA ’67 died February 28, 2019. Mr. Chitty graduated from Princeton University.

His life centered on a series of idealistic experiments and search for deeper meaning, leading eventually to a career as a therapist and teacher of holistic health methods. He created numerous publications including books, video presentations, and articles, all focusing on various aspects of natural health. He is survived by his wife, Anna; two children; grandchildren; and his siblings, including Em Turner Chitty SA ’73 and Nathan Chitty SA ’74.

Henry R. Mangum III SMA ’68 died January 17, 2019. He was a graduate of UNC at Wilmington. Following a successful career as a financial controller, he retired in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Zettie Carrier Mangum; two sons; five grandchildren; and extended family.

William “Jordan” Fink SMA ’70 died February 7, 2019. Mr. Fink was an awardwinning photographer in Atlanta.

He had a pilot’s license and was an accomplished musician and composer, an avid health enthusiast, and a painter.

A contributing member of The United Cherokee Nation – Aniywiya, he designed their tribal emblem. SAS and Mr. Fink’s fellow SMA cadets are grateful for his production of the The Last Cadet Dedication Ceremony video, which he finished despite his health struggles with his liver. He is survived by his wife, Carrie Jones Fink; her children; and extended family.

Jeffrey H. Farese SA ’75 died August 9, 2018. Mr. Farese was a former triathlete with a passionate love of music. His career included playing his guitar at numerous venues with his music family. He is survived by his partner, Gloria Sipes; three siblings; and extended family.

William J. Thrower SA ’81 died February 2, 2019. He graduated from Wofford College. Mr. Thrower was a civilian agent for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. He attended law school at Western Michigan Cooley Law School and became an attorney with the Charleston County Public Defender's Office.

He then went into private practice.

by TCU Press in 2018. He is emeritus professor of English at the University of North Texas and lives in Fort Worth.

1960s Michael B. Teate StA ‘68 and his wife, Pam, own Realty Associates of Atlanta, LLC. They previously owned several Re/Max franchises in the metro Atlanta area. They have lived in Decatur, Ga. for 38 years and have three daughters and four grandchildren.

Bill Varnell SMA ’63 and his wife, Linda, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., with their three children and five grandchildren. Their daughter-in-law, the Rev. Sarah Varnell, renewed their vows and challenged them to make “another 25.” Bill and Linda, who met in college, have moved from Whitwell, Tenn., to Missouri City, Texas to be close to one of their daughters and her family. They and their children are proud graduates of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Bill Yarbrough SMA ’68 serves on the board for SAG-AFTRA's Nashville and Kentucky region, serving until 2020. In his spare time, he owns a professional painting service and serves SAS in a variety of volunteer capacities.

Bill Eudy StA ’69 and his wife, Phyllis, visited campus last November during a vacation drive from Oklahoma to N.C. Bill attended St. Andrew’s freshman year. Bill served in the Air Force, was an adjunct professor at the University of Oklahoma, and worked in commercial real estate with the Urban Renewal Authority for 14 years. Phyllis is a senior trade ally specialist with CLEAResult in Oklahoma City, where they live.

John W. Vissman StA ’72 and his wife, Chris, stopped by campus on their way home from a two-week trip to Florida. Pictured in front of the St. Andrew’s display in the Spencer Room, John offered to facilitate and fund the restoration of their class banner. John and Chris live in Covington, Ky., where he retired in 2018 from work in the non-profit sector.

Kix Brooks SA ’73 was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame as part of the duo Brooks and Dunn.

The award was announced in March and celebrated in October. The duo also opened an exhibition in the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in August entitled Brooks & Dunn: Kings of Neon, which runs through July 2020.

Ric Dillon StA ’74 and his wife, Marina, welcomed daughter Luisa Rose on Feb. 26, 2019. This is the couple’s first child. Rick and Marina split time between New Albany, Ohio and Naples, Fla., where Ric is chairman of the board of Diamond Hill Investment Group. Ric was named the 2019 St. Andrew’s-Sewanee Distinguished Alumnus in June.

David Lodge SA ’75 received an honorary degree from the University of the South in May 2018. He graduated from Sewanee in 1979 as a Rhodes Scholar. He is the Francis J. DiSalvo Director of the Atkinson Center for a Sustainable Future at Cornell University. David is the brother of SAS CFO, Sarah Lodge.

Mary Carol Lyle Hollis StA ’76 wrote, “After umpteen years of administrative jobs, including 12 years in human resources, and nine years selling fine jewelry, I am officially retired as of December 2018. Angela was ordained deacon and priest in 1996 after graduating from the former Seabury Theological Seminary in Evanston, Ill. A lifelong learner, she earned a DMin from McCormick Theological Seminary, Chicago; and an Executive Certificate in Religious Fundraising from Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy. She also holds degrees in marketing, human resources development, and business administration. Angela is the mother of Athena Richardson ’03.

Allen Townsend StA ’78 is director of accounts payable for Compassus Hospice, which is head-quartered in Brentwood, Tenn., and has offices in 30 states offering hospice, palliative care, and home health services. Allen lives in Nashville.

Mary Pope Hutson SA ’79 was appointed to the National Park System Advisory Board in 2018 to serve until 2022 and elected to serve as its chair. The board provides counsel to the Director of the National Park Service and the Secretary of the Interior. In 2016, she was named Vice President for Alumnae Relations and Development for Sweet Briar College in Virginia, where she is a member of their board of directors and their athletic hall of fame. President Meredith Woo said, “Her advocacy for our natural and built environment is remarkable and without her, the College would not be where we are today.” Mary Pope was formerly the executive vice president of the Land Trust Alliance in Washington, D.C., and the executive director of the Low Country Land Trust in Charleston, S.C.

1980s Brian Caldwell SA ’81 lives in Chattanooga, Tenn., and is partner with Coates Caldwell Attorneys, specializing in estate planning and probate and estate administration. Brian handles the firm’s court appearances and trials and is an adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

Teresa Outlaw StA ’82 received her master’s in school administration this May from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a se-

nior administrator in special education services for Wake County Public Schools in North Carolina. Teresa is a member of the SAS Alumni Council.

She lives in Cary, N.C. Martha Warren ’82 married Brian Pearlman at their country home in Trenton, Ga. in June. Martha and Brian operate their own companies and have a blended family of five adult daughters. Christi Teasley ’83, an artist and educator and owns Teasley Textiles.

Her exhibition, “Interior Threads,” was on display in the SAS Art Gallery this fall. The installation combined repurposed materials and newly created fiber pieces into inviting intimate spaces. Christi discovered her love of repeated patterns and printing fabric as a high-school student at SAS and honed her study of textile dyeing, printing, surface design, and construction at the Rhode Island School of Design earning a BFA in textiles and an MA in art education. She taught art and directed the SAS Art Gallery and Visiting Artist Program from until 2016. She lives in Monteagle with her husband, Carlton.

Malia Carlos ’87 participated in a spring intensive theatre training workshop at Double Edge Theatre in Ash-

field, Mass., working on playwrighting using Inanna and Gilgamesh, which she teaches at SAS. Malia is chair of the SAS English department and mother of Camila Hwang-Carlos ’17, who attends Sewanee.

Jon Robertson ’88 is the manager of nutrition and food services for Sanford Vermillion Medical Center.

He oversees approximately 100 longterm care and assisted living residents and 250 employees for the South Dakota hospital, which is part of the largest rural not-for-profit health care system in the nation. Jon’s wife, Carol, is the manager of member services for the National Music Museum. They have three sons, Alex, 24; Nathan, 19; and Willis, 15.

Frank Hoskins ’89 visited campus in April with his son Jim and daughter Julia. Frank, his wife, Adriana, and the kids live in Simpsonville, S.C., where Frank works with T & S Brassworks.

1990s Olivia KewFickus ’90 is assistant provost and executive director of Va n d e r b i l t Institutional Research Group. She was formerly the director of strategic planning at the University

of Birmingham (UK). At Vanderbilt, Olivia works with senior administrators and faculty to advance data innovations for academic planning and executive decision-making. Olivia was previously an international grants/ workshop coordinator at California State Polytechnic University and deputy director for the US-Ukraine Community Partnerships Program.

She earned an MBA with Distinction from the University of Leicester in the UK, and a BA from Princeton University. Olivia lives in Franklin, Tenn., with her husband, Joseph; son, Robin; and daughter, Hannah.

Alex Cox ’94 moved from New York to Por tland, Ore., where he is director of merchandise and projects with IDW Entertainment.

IDW is one of the top comic book publishers in the US. Alex recently edited the book, Selling Comics, a compilation of essays and best practices from some of the sharpest minds in the industry, covering topics such as store layout, building a brand, and diversifying product lines. While in New York, Alex owned and operated the award-winning comic book shop, Rocketship in Brooklyn, and was deputy director of the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund.

Chip Reed ’94 visited campus this summer for the first time in many years. In early November, Chip was named general manager of Bill-E's Small Batch Bacon while also launching a cooking show, Dirty Dishes, on Growing America Network. He owns Reed Service Solutions and Chip's Picks, taking small batch regional products to the national market.

Chip received his culinary arts degree and chef training from Johnson & Wales University. He most recently

worked with the Zac Brown Band and Sapphire Grill. He is pictured on the cover of the spring edition of Southern Flavor magazine for which he writes a regular column. He lives in Newnan, Georgia.

YoKasta Martinez ’95 married DeCosta Langford in November 2018 in Nashville.

Yokasta is an HR information systems specialist. She and DeCosta live in Eulees, Texas.

Lucas McArthur ’96 married Elise DeSa in Thunder Bay, Ontario in July.

Lucas graduated from St. Georges University School of Medicine in 2009 and practices family medicine in Largo, Fla. They and their son, Aiden, live in St. Petersburg, Fla. Sierra Schneider ’97 moved back to Santa Cruz, Calif., to take a newlycreated position at UC Santa Cruz as the Assistant Director of the Science Internship Program (SIP). The program places high school students in research labs alongside UC researchers for 10 weeks in the summer. Sierra suggests it is a great opportunity for SAS students. Students can learn more about research placements in STEM fields, psychology, and other social sciences at ucsc-sip.org.

Barbara Gambrell King ’00 joined the University of the South’s Education Department as a professor of educational psychology in addition to teaching first grade at Sewanee Elementary. In September, she received her PhD in education from David Lipscomb University. Barbara and her husband, Isaac, live in Sewanee with their two children, Nathan ’21 and Madison ’23.

Laura Beth Graham Matthews ’01 and husband, Jeff, welcomed their second son, George David Matthews, in December. He has a twoyear old-brother, Graham. They live in Alexandria, La., where Laura Beth is an attorney with Faircloth, Melton, Sobel & Bash and Jeff is business reporter and writer for The Town Talk.

Anneli Virkhaus ’03 is a board-certified music therapist with degrees from Hendrix College and Appalachian State University. Anneli implements creative, musical, and holistic experiences utilizing talk therapy, somatic therapy, Theta Healing, sound and energy healing, dream analysis, and psychic wisdom. She also serves as the official gardener at Dubose Conference Center. She married Oliver Maddox in July 2019. The couple lives in Sewanee.

Monroe Spivey ’04 lives in Asheville, N.C., where she owns Stillwaters Healing Arts. Monroe obtained her master’s degree in transpersonal counseling psychology from Naropa University and her BA in cultural anthropology from the University of Georgia. Aika Yano Davis ’05 is a research scientist in chemical safety at Underwriters Laboratories Inc. She holds a PhD and MS in environmental engineering and a BS in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Chatham Morgan ’05 and his wife, Marilu, welcomed their second child in April. James Harrison Morgan joins big sister Carla Mae, who is two. Aunt Jane Morgan ’12, who lives in New York, is ecstatic. The family lives in Destin, Fla., where Chatham owns and operates several family restaurants, including the famous Harbor Docks, and serves on the Destin City Council.

Jenna Lewis Perkins ’07 and her husband, Ryan, announced the August birth of their first child, daughter Evelyn Rae Perkins. The family lives in Alexandria, Va. Jenna is a urology nurse practitioner with George Washington Medical Faculty Associates.

Jordan Anderson ’07 and Tyler Royals were married in April at the Memphis Botanic Garden. Mother of the bride is Kay Marquis Anderson StA ’72. Her uncle James Marquis III StA ’71 was a reader. The couple lives in Memphis with their cat, Ziggy. Jordan has two master’s degrees in general psychology and counseling and is working towards her PhD in clinical psychology. Tyler is an attorney.

Megan Barry ’08 married Brian Groover in November 2018. Her sister Chelsey Barry Willis ’06 was matron of honor, and Ashley Barry ’14 and Aly Barry ’14 served as bridesmaids. James Barry StA ’77 is father of the bride. Megan graduated from the University of the South in 2012 and works in Atlanta as a business development program coordinator. Brian is a sergeant/paramedic at Clayton County Georgia Fire Department. The couple resides in Powder Springs, Ga. Meg ArmourJones ’09 married Sara Waren in October 2018.

Meg graduated from St. Georges University School of Medicine in May and is a pediatric resident with the UT College of Medicine at Erlanger Hospital.

She and Sara live in Chattanooga.

Taylor Kavanaugh ’09 married Jarod Collins in June.

Alumni in attendance were Taylor’s mother Robin Albright Kavanaugh StA ’79 and Caroline Russell Pemberton ’08. The couple lives in Houston, where Taylor is a clinical studies engineer with Biotronik. Jarrod works in the medical imaging field with Siemens Healthineers.

2010s Kira Tharp ’12 married Rafael Lomeli in July. Alumni in attendance were Camas Gazzola ’12, Allyson Hale ’12, Helena HofmeyerLancaster ’12, Addison Willis ’12, Sophie Register ’12, and Sam Stine ’14, along with her parents, David Tharp ’84 and Karen El-Bayadi Tharp ’85, and sister, Chelsea Tharp ’09, who was Kira’s maid of honor. Kira teaches English at SAS and works in the alumni and advancement offices.

Tinashe Zimbwa ’13 graduated in May from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Ala. Celebrating with him are former SAS faculty member, Allison Paterson on his right, Jesse-Katherine Owens ’08 on his left, and Anna-Grace Owens ’11 on his far right. Tinashe majored in business administration and financial economics and lives in Mobile, working with Sandifer and Associates.

Tieta Keetle ’14 lives in Clemson, S.C. where she works as a virtual health coach for Noom. After graduating from the University of the South in 2018, Tieta worked as a wilderness field instructor outside of Asheville, N.C. Andrew White ’14 married Brittany Treadaway in October in Summerville, Ga. Andrew is a paramedic with A&E EMS in Winchester, Tenn. The couple lives in Tracy City.

Allison Bruce ’15 graduated from Sewanee in May and works at the University as an assistant visit specialist in the admissions office. She hopes to attend grad school in history ultimately to become a high school teacher.

Alumni Activities

It’s been a busy year with events in New York, Connecticut, Tampa-St. Pete, Orlando, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Greenville, Asheville, Atlanta, Birmingham, Sewanee, and Nashville. This spring, we entered SASSY SAS Alumni as a team for the Big Mpilo Ngomane ’15, Tommy Oliver ’16, and Andrew Heitzenrater ’15 attended the Tennessee State Open in June. Tommy tied for 37th with Andrew serving as his caddy. Tommy is a senior at the University of the South and was named an AllAmerican Scholar by the Golf Coaches Association.

Andrew also attends Sewanee. Mpilo graduated from Centre College in May and works at the Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany.

Alumni Work Weekend

Twenty-five volunteers attended the 10th Alumni Work Weekend and tackled several campus projects.

Garner Nottingham ’16 visited campus in August while helping his younger brother move in as a Sewanee freshman. Garner is a senior at Denison University where he is studying philosophy, politics, and economics. He studied in London for a semester in 2018. He works as an intern for various political campaigns. He is pictured with faculty member Burki Gladstone, who also attended Denison.

Grace Liu ’16 started an MS degree in information systems at the Kelley School of Business in August after graduating a year early from Indiana University. She wrote, “I found my passion for business and technology, and I am incredibly thankful to have the opportunity to strengthen my skills through this challenging program.” Grace lives in Bloomington, Ind.

With approximately 350 guests in attendance, the joy of an SAS Alumni Weekend was as strong as ever this past summer.

The SMA Class of 1969 celebrated at The Last Cadet statue during an afternoon toast. Artie Manning SMA ’66 received the St. Andrew’s-Sewanee Service Award for his dedication to building bonds between SMA and SAS alumni. The life-size bronze statue of The Last Cadet is the embodiment of Artie’s loyalty and support; under his leadership the project was born and brought to fruition.

Preparing for the Next Step

By November 1, seventy percent of the Class of 2020 had already applied to college. Xavier Thompson, a junior from Jamaica, is just starting his college search. By this time next year, he and his classmates will be well along the application process. In addition to helping Xavier find schools that fit his personal needs, Director of College Counseling Dan Monahan is helping Xavier to explore the importance of a college degree and prepare him for the standardized testing, college visits, fairs, interviews, 36 St. Andrew’s-Sewanee Magazine · Fall 2019 the ·financial aid application, and crafting a college admission essay.
