Worth Noticing Every Day

T

his fall’s total eclipse, which extended the entire length of the country, took place on the first day of the SAS school year. You can read about what we did to make the most of this rare opportunity on pages 14-15. Below is a portion of the message I delivered that morning:

You can walk all over this wonderful campus, any time of year, and see beautiful trees, flowers, and bushes.

You can walk to Piney Point and see a glorious view of the plateau and valley. If you let it, if you're paying attention, it will take your breath away.

Indeed, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, we are surrounded by incredibly beautiful, even breathtaking elements of creation. From the changing of seasons to bugs and birds and every other kind of animal, from blades of grass and rose petals to rainclouds and trees to the wind, from the water to the stars, and the sun, and the moon, we are surrounded by beauty and miracles everywhere and always. And God created them all.

But as you watch the eclipse today, I want you to think about this: The same God who changed the seasons, who made the animals and the trees, and the water and the rose petals, the same God who at the beginning of time put the planets into motion so that the earth would orbit the sun and the moon would orbit the earth and that those orbits would come to a point on this day to create the eclipse that we get to witness, the same creator that made all that happen, is the same one that made you. And you are God's most prized creation. That is worth noticing every day. Amen.

Letters About Literature

Sarah Grace Burns ’21 and Caroline Lamborn ’21 received honorable mentions from Humanities Tennessee for their submissions to the Letters About Literature competition. Letters About Literature is a national writing contest that encourages students to write a personal letter to an author, living or dead, whose work has evoked strong feelings in the student. Sarah Grace wrote her letter to Katherine Paterson, author of Bridge to Terabithia. Caroline wrote to Vladimir Nabokov, author of Lolita.

Welcoming Eighth Grade Boarders SAS welcomed four eighth grade boarding students in August. The addition of an eighth-grade boarding option was in response to family requests. “We have been pleased with the response to the introduction of 8th grade boarding,” said Head of School Karl Sjolund. “Many families are seeking the small school environment, round-the-clock mentoring, and extracurricular opportunities that boarding school provides. St. Andrew’sSewanee’s emphasis on meeting the individual needs of each student, whether for great academic challenge or academic support, also makes us an attractive option for families who want to give their child an early advantage.”

Distinguished School Awards SAS honored scores of students for their academic, athletic, leadership, and artistic achievements at the 2017 Honors Day ceremony in May. Spanish & Latin Awards Forty SAS Spanish language students and 11 Latin students received recognition for their performance on national language exams. Bronze medalists on the Spanish exam included Evan Fox ’20, Matthew Mollica ’18, Porter Neubauer ’21, Gabriel Pongdee ’20, Mariel Rinck ’19, Jonathan Rwalinda ’19, and Gabriel Stevens ’19; silver medalists Richard Du ’18, Dirk Kayitare ’19, Samantha Kennard ’18, Grace Rowell ’20, Aidan Smith ’20, Elsie Uwera ’19, and Ryan Val ’20; and gold medalist Cecilia Schutz ’22. Latin Cum Laude award winners were Gus Croom ’22, Mac Croom ’22, Zolon Knoll ’21, Lane Scoggins ’17, Gale Uselton ’22, and Cameron Weaver ’21. Steven Anderson ’20, Riley Burnette ’22,

and Jayla McLaurin ’20 earned the Magna Cum Laude award. J.T. Jenkins ’21 received the Silver Maxima Cum Laude award. Elijah Seavey ’22 missed only one question to qualify for the Gold Summa Cum Laude award.

St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School begins language instruction in the sixth grade.

Students choose from Spanish, Chinese, and Latin. Students completing their SAS language studies may continue instruction at the University of the South or begin a new language. In recent years students have studied French, Russian, German, Japanese, and Arabic at Sewanee.

Class of 2017 Inducted into the Alumni Association The 44 members of the St. Andrew’sSewanee School Class of 2017 were welcomed to the SAS Alumni Association in May during what is referred to as the “Senior Mugging,” so named because each senior receives a mug with the names of all the members of the class on it as a gift from the Alumni Association.

Conley Averett ’09 spoke at the event.

A graduate of Parsons School of Design, Conley is a knitwear designer and has overseen projects for Ralph Lauren, Oscar de la Renta, Marc Jacobs, Narcisco Rodriguez, and Kanye West's first Yeezy/ Adidas collection. He now runs his own knitwear design consultancy, working with emerging designers. In his remarks, Conley thanked math teacher Margot Burns who ignored his claims that he would not need math in the fashion industry and helped him to learn the geometry that he now uses daily.

2017 Grads Shine

Maggie White ’17 received the 2017 Mary Phillips KirbySmith Award presented by Sewanee’s Emerald-Hodgson Hospital Auxiliary.

The $2,000 award for college support is presented to a high school senior who intends to pursue a degree in the health sciences and who has demonstrated an academic ability that indicates the likelihood of success at the college level.

Andrew Bachman ’17, a high honors student at SAS, received a scholarship from the Tennessee Society of Professional Engineers to support his college studies at Lafayette College in Easton, Penn. As an SAS student, Andrew took courses in German and computer science at the University of the South. He was a member of the varsity mountain biking team, service coordinator for Turkington House, and is an Eagle Scout. Over the years, he has received awards for outstanding achievement in biology, chemistry, geometry, and Spanish. On Honors Day, he was inducted into the school’s Cum Laude Society. Andrew is the son of SAS chemistry teacher Jennifer Bachman and sister of Cate Bachman ’20.

The Right Stuff We like to say that "there's nothing wrong with peer pressure if you have the right peers."

Take Bailey McLean ’18, for example.

Last spring, Bailey, a three-sport athlete

and honors student from Manchester, Tenn. built a Little Free Library at the Manchester Recreation Complex for his Eagle Scout project. Over the summer he attended the United States Military Academy West Point Summer Leadership Experience. He distinguished himself there by earning a Cyber Security Workshop Certificate of Excellence.

He also attended the United States Naval Academy Summer Seminar.

Still not ready to spend the rest of the summer swinging in a hammock with a cold lemonade, Bailey returned home to volunteer at a Cyber Security Camp at the Handson Science Center in Tullahoma.

Bailey’s hard work and dedication has not gone unnoticed. He was the first member of the Class of 2018 to be admitted to college, Marion Military Institute in Marion, Ala. His dream is to attend one of the U.S. service academies.

AP Scholars Because SAS students can take actual college courses for credit, the school does not offer Advanced Placement courses.

However, each year students choose to prepare independently to take AP exams.

Four students received 2017 AP School Scholar awards. The AP Scholar Awards recognize high school students who have demonstrated collegelevel achievement in AP courses

and exams. AP Scholars included Ester Yang ’18 and Cindy Chen ’18 and recent graduates Andrew Bachman ’17 (now enrolled at Lafayette College), and Bonnie Tu ’17 (now enrolled at Indiana University). Students took AP exams in Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Calculus, Physics, English Literature and Composition, US History, Chemistry, Statistics, and Environmental Science.

Planting from the Past for the Future In coordination with the American Chestnut Foundation (TACF), SAS’s Southern Appalachian History class celebrated Earth Day by planting six American chestnut trees on campus.

TACF member Jack Agricola StA ’68 visited teacher Mark Brunton’s class in January to explain the importance of the tree to Appalachian history and its near disappearance due to a blight in the early 20th century. Jack returned to campus on Earth Day for a ceremonial planting in the school’s orchard, adjacent to the SAS Farm.

Mr. Brunton’s Southern Appalachian History course uses a multi-disciplinary approach to explore the Appalachian region’s unique contributions to American life. One of the final projects was the preparation of a feast that included learning to prepare rabbit, squirrel, opossum, and venison using native herbs and wild edibles.

Burns and Smith Receive Named Chairs

Faculty members Doug Burns and Geoffrey Smith have been honored with named academic chairs.

Math Department Coordinator Doug Burns was named to the Cissy Patterson Chair in Mathematics. The Chair, established by the Cissy Patterson Trust, is awarded to an experienced and highly qualified mathematics teacher at SAS. This is the second time that Burns, who joined the faculty in 1990, has received this honor. Past recipients have included: Margot Burns, Liz Quinn-Stine, Cameron Sisson, Allison Paterson, Patty Milner, Sarah Carlos, and Jerry White. Mr. Burns is former Director of the Middle School and former Director of Faculty at SAS. History Department Coordinator Geoffrey Smith received the Fort Chair in Writing in recognition of

his work on leading the school’s “Writing Across the Curriculum” initiative and his Humanities Teachers of Tennessee honors and work on Holocaust Studies. The Fort Chair in Writing was established in 1995 in appreciation for a major gift from Dudley Clark Fort, Sr., in honor of his daughter-in-law, Priscilla Carter Fort.

Past recipients of the Fort Chair have included: Claire Reishman, Tracy Randolph, Tom Gladstone, Mark Brunton, Phil White, and Susan Core.

Both chairs are awarded for a 3-year period. They provide a stipend for the recipient and an additional $1000 in professional development for use by a faculty member in the designated academic area.

Modeling the Standards Math teacher Liz Quinn-Stine presented at the Tennessee Mathematics Teachers’ Association’s (TMTA) Modeling the Standards Conference at UT-Martin in September. Ms. QuinnStine’s presentation, “Can DESMOS Replace the Graphing Calculator?” looks at whether DESMOS, a free online graphing program, can replace the expensive TI-calculators that students are now required to purchase for upper level math courses. Ms. Quinn-Stine is a career mathematics teacher in her 25th year of teaching. She first came to SAS in 2003 and returned to the school in 2010 after several years of teaching at Cary Academy in North Carolina. Prior to that, she taught at The Wayneflete School, Phillips Exeter Academy, Sunriver Preparatory School, and Sandy Springs Friends School. She holds a BA in mathematics from Brown University and a MS in geophysics from the University of Washington. She is the mother of Sam Stine ’14 and Fritz Stine ’17.

The Sewanee Advantage Thanks to the historic relationship between SAS and the University of the South, qualified upperclassmen can enroll in courses at the college for credit. This semester 11 SAS students are taking 15 courses at Sewanee, including Calculus, Electricity & Magnetism, French, Microeconomics, German, and World Politics.

Im Ausland studieren

John Beavers ’19 is spending his junior year studying in Germany under the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship Program (CBYX). As a Congress-Bundestag scholar, John attends a German high school and lives with a German host family. His year includes language lessons, meetings with government officials, and cultural activities. John is the third SAS student to be chosen for the CBYX in recent years. Past participants included Lisa Zachau ’99 and Diana Rinck ’15. John is the son of Kiki Glendenning Beavers SA ’82 and Ben Beavers SA ’81.

Strumming Along With the support of a Master/Apprentice grant from the Tennessee Arts Commission, guitarist Ben Ayers ’11 and five-time Tennessee State Fiddle Champion Jim Wood performed at McCrory Hall for the Performing Arts in May. The duo performed traditional American fiddle tunes that explored the relationship between the fiddle and rhythm guitar.

New Faces

Jana Loyd Barnett ’96 (School Store Associate) attended College of Charleston, Trident Technical College, and Southeastern School of Neuromuscular and Massage Therapy. She grew up in the retail world with her family’s business, Big Daddy’s Outdoors in Bridgeport, Ala. She was store manager there from 2000-2014. Mrs. Barnett’s son, Raulston, is a 6th grader at SAS.

Tong Mu (Chinese) holds a BA and MA from St. Mary’s College of Maryland where she studied Anthropology and Teaching Chinese. She gained student teaching experience at Leonardtown Middle and High Schools in Maryland. Originally from Hangzhou, China, she has also studied abroad in Alba, Italy and at the University of Gambia. Ms. Mu is a former boarding student and is very excited to be joining the residential faculty at SAS.

David Prehn (English and History) majored in history and English at the University of the South, graduating magna cum laude with honors in history. He received the Clarence Day Community Service Award at Sewanee. An outdoor enthusiast, Mr. Prehn is certified in crisis intervention and wilderness advanced first aid. He was formerly High School Program Coordinator and High School Intern Coordinator for City Kids Wilderness Project.

Janet Berka (McCrory Hall Coordinator, Filmmaking, Theater) holds an MFA in Stage Design from Southern Methodist University and a BFA in Theatre Design from Penn State. Her specialty is lighting design.

She has worked on more than 50 stage productions across the country.

Prior to coming to SAS, Ms. Berka worked for CNN on all programming originating from New York City.

Derek J. Perkins (Director of Admission and Financial Aid) came to SAS from the Darlington School in Rome, Ga., where he served as Director of Admission for four years. Prior to that he was Associate Director of Admission at Culver Academies in Culver, Ind. and Director of Enrollment Systems, Admissions Counselor, and Assistant Director of Admissions at Marian University in Indianapolis. Mr. Perkins holds a BA in psychology and sociology from Indiana University and an MS in sport studies from Miami University.

Rebecca Van de Ven (Music) is a concert oboist and teaches oboe and coaches chamber music at Middle Tennessee State University. She has also taught clarinet, piano, and saxophone and performs with the Nashville Symphony. She can be heard on many recordings including Season 3 of the hit TV series Fargo and video games such as Minecraft and Star Wars Battlefront. She was formerly Chamber Music Coordinator and coach at the Sewanee Summer Music Festival and on the faculty of Albion College and holds an MM from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and a BS from the University of Wisconsin.

Sports Highlights Spring 2017 Record Runs SAS track and field athletes, under the leadership of head coach Jake Miller, shined at the regional meet. Sarah Beth Hobby ’20 won the long jump with a personal record of 15' 6" and qualified for the state championships where she finished 8th. Sarah Grace Burns ’21, daughter of SAS faculty members Doug and Margot Burns, took 3rd in high jump with 4'10. Jaylen Tillman ’19 took 3rd in shotput and 5th in discus, narrowly edging out Justin Elgouhary ’18 who took 6th.

New middle school track and field records were set by Sarah Grace (Girls’ High Jump 4’10”, Girls’ 100m Hurdles 19.48, Girls’ 400m 1:08.08), Huxley HumeAllingham ’23 (Boys’ High Jump 4’0”), Curtis Gill ’21 of South Pittsburg (Boys’ 200m 27.7), and Elijah Seavey ’22 (Boys’ 1600m 5:48.00, Boys’ 800 Meter 2:53.00). Elijah is the son of Latin teacher Bill Seavey.

Goals & Glory The varsity boys’ soccer team, under head coach Harrison Camp, finished the 2017 season with a 7-4-1 record and 3rd in the district. The middle school team, coached by Margot Burns, finished 7-2-2 and as runner-up in the Central Tennessee Conference. The team scored 31 goals and allowed only six goals against them.

Twenty of the goals were scored by Porter Neubauer ’21, son of Alex Neubauer ’91.

Game, Set, Match!

The girls’ varsity tennis team, which included Bea Jaenicke Gonzalez ’19 of Barcelona, Spain; Fiona Qian ’18 of Guangzhou, China; Ester Yang ’18 of Nanjing, China; and Jenna Black ’21 and Tessa Shackelford ’20 of Sewanee; finished their regular season with an 8-3 record, qualifying for the state meet. Team captain Ester Yang finished 12-2, finishing 2nd in the regional tournament, qualifying for the state individual tournament where she also finished 2nd. This was Ester’s third state tennis tournament appearance. She was named to the Division II A Middle East All-Region team and the Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of Preps. The tennis team is coached by Kenneth Alexander.

Fall 2017 Golfing Greats SAS golfers finished well at the Division II East District 2-A tournament at The Bear Trace at Harrison Bay with three golfers qualifying for the regional tournament. Aubrey Black ’18 finished in 4th place shooting 79. Gio Hui ’18 qualified with a 91 and eighth grader Tyler Rodgers ’22 qualified with a 97.

Kickin' Victories The varsity girls’ soccer team finished with a season record of 5-4-2. The team had three shutout victories earning AllDistrict honors for goalkeeper Rachel Alvarez ’18, daughter of Stephen Alvarez ’83. Mariel Rinck ’19, daughter of Spanish teachers, Steve and Claudia Rinck, led the team in scoring with 12 goals, and Kate Butler ’19 led the team in assists with seven. Kate also earned All-District honors.

Touchdown The varsity football team went 7-1 for the regular season, finishing tied for first place in the MTAC. 8-man Extreme Football named five SAS football players to the roster for their November AllStars game: Justin Elgouhary ’18, Dustin Stensby ’18 (son of Jessica Stensby ’98), Gabriel Stevens ’19 (son of Jan Williams Stevens ’95), Jalen Tillman ’19, and Blaise Zeitler ’18 (son of SAS Athletic Director Rob Zeitler)

Football, You Bet!

S

t. Andrew’s-Sewanee School’s 8-man football team finished the regular season with a 2613 win over rival The Webb School for a 7-1 winning season. The season was remarkable for several reasons, including that one-quarter of the team is not from the United States and did not grow up playing American football.

When Head Coach John Hargis’s squad of 28 young men took to the field, six countries were represented: Mexico, China, Bulgaria, Rwanda, Germany, and the United States. This isn’t some recruiting scheme; six of the international players had never played football before this year.

Language can sometimes be a challenge. Although all of the students come to St. Andrew’s-Sewanee having studied English for most of their education, bump-and-run and blitz are not part of their vocabulary. This year, Coach Hargis received some translation help from senior Steven Zhu ’18, a three-year varsity player and SAS soccer stand-out from Shanghai, who was provided with similar help from an upperclassman when he was first starting out. In addition to playing, it was Steven’s job to be sure that his fellow players knew that a turnover is not a pastry.

It is a tough way to build a football dynasty. Although sophomore Laurenz Schumacher ’20 of Cologne, Germany and junior Georgi Georgiev ’19 of

Troyan, Bulgaria have earned their way on to the kick-off team, both will return home at the end of the school year when their one-year study abroad opportunity ends. Coach Hargis doesn’t mind the challenge; in fact, he was surprised when someone pointed out that 25% of his team are international students. He had not noticed.

As for the winning season, “People keep asking me ‘what are you doing differently,’” said Coach Hargis. “To be honest, the coaching is the same.

It is the guys’ attitudes and work ethic this year. All of our seniors have really stepped up and that is filtering down through the whole squad.” Even to the guys who didn’t know in August that “sack” could mean something other than what you use to carry your lunch.

PINING I

n late July, with great sadness, we removed several of the century-old towering pine trees from the school’s main quad. We had been informed that the trees had reached the end of their healthy lifespan, especially in the shallow soil available to them on the plateau. Their many dead branches had become a hazard to pedestrians during the not-infrequent ice storms and high winds we experience on our campus.

On many campuses, the loss of a tree would go unnoticed.

We are grateful to have alumni, students, and campus friends whose ties to this place are so strong that the loss of a tree is a bit like losing a friend. In our announcement to our community about the tree removal, we requested stories about the pines from our community.

who have “always” lived here (since 1938), have “always” heard that the St. Andrew’s pines, like those on the old St. Mary’s campus, and those in front of the old Academy’s Quintard Hall, and those in front of the college’s St. Luke’s Hall, were all from a large gift of seedlings presented to Sewanee by the Imperial Prussian Ambassador, Baron Speck von Sternburg, after a particularly pleasant visit here. I was told that the seedlings came from the famous Black Forest in Germany, but was confused, decades later, to realize that they are Eastern (American) White Pines. With a little investigation, a few years ago I found out that the two facts are compatible.

When Bismark was “reigning” in Germany (1873-1890), he artificially developed the Black Forest with huge plantations of the American pines. They thrived so enthusiastically that the Prussian ambassador under Teddy Roosevelt symbolically used their seedlings to “return thanks” to America, handing them out to various towns whose hospitality he had personally appreciated.

n the summer of 1990, I attended the first ever SAS Summer program. It was a turning point in my young life, and SAS provided a new beginning for me. I remember with vivid distinction the peaceful feeling of sitting quietly under the pines on one of the stone benches there in the quad. Although it was a hot and humid summer, there was an almost magical feeling of the cool air provided by the shade of the pine trees, and I’ll never forget it. I regret that I will not be able to see the pines as I remember them, but the memory will be with me for the rest of my life.

t. Andrew’s-Sewanee School kicked off the school year in the dark. Students, faculty, and staff took a break on the first day of classes for an all-school viewing of the solar eclipse.

During orientation and opening meetings, the science faculty shared a video on the history and significance of eclipses.

Following the video, they explained the science of an eclipse and provided instructions on how to view the eclipse safely. The science faculty also had special t-shirts designed for the day.

On Monday, August 21, the school community gathered in the chapel to receive viewing glasses and proceeded to the varsity field in time to watch the rare celestial event unfold.

Science teacher Jen Bachman who helped to organize the event was excited about the opportunity, “We are grateful to have the flexibility in our classes and schedule to be able to make room for special teachable moments like this. This is the type of event that brings our classroom learning to life.”

any scientists trace their calling to their earliest years—a fascination with dinosaurs, a need to know everything about the Solar System. For Dr. Reynolds, the light came on a little later through a love of mystery novels and a college science class.

“I left high school my junior year and started taking courses at the local community college. One of the first classes was a marine biology course. I loved it!”

When Dr. Reynolds transferred to Cal State – Los Angeles, she took geography courses and learned that under the heading of geography one could study anything as long as it could be mapped.

Dr. Reynolds earned her BA in geography and began a master’s program at the University of Wyoming.

After a few years off to teach in the public schools of south central Los Angeles, she finished her degree and enrolled in the University of Kentucky’s doctoral program. Her study of geography did, indeed, allow her to study and map a broad range of topics

where she directed the undergraduate GIS (Geographic Information System) and graduate certificate programs.

In 2016, Dr. Reynolds moved to Sewanee and joined the faculty at SAS. At SAS, Dr. Reynolds’ students benefit from her wide-ranging interests and curiosity. On a recent day this fall, Dr. Reynolds took her upper school field geology class to the South Cumberland State Park Visitor Center and the Grundy Lakes Coke Ovens where a local who happened by regaled her students with the history of the area. She guided her sixth-grade students through lab exercises using balls and handmade rockets to explore the transformation of energy. Later that same day, she and her colleagues explored new ways to teach information literacy and technology.

Teaching sixth through twelfth graders is a challenge that Dr. Reynolds enjoys.

Her younger students sometimes “transfer energy” to topics other than what is on the syllabus, but they are

endlessly curious about the world. Her older students need encouragement to let others see their childlike enthusiasm and curiosity but have life experience that helps them contextualize their learning. With both groups, her goal is to get them to marvel at the mysteries of the physical world and see themselves as the sleuths who might solve them.

A STRONG SIGNAL

F

or some people, it was just a college class assignment, but Bayard “Bud” Walters SMA ’59 figured if he was going to go through the exercise of filling out an application for a radio station license, he was, by gosh, going to do it for real.

Everyone else received a grade. When Bud was done, he had a radio station and a lifelong career.

Bud was raised in Henderson, Ky., just across the Ohio River from Indiana.

His father died when he was 10, and his mother thought the Sewanee Military Academy’s male environment would be good for him. And it was.

Bud looks back with great fondness on his days on the Mountain. “At SMA, we were up each day at 6 a.m., no matter the weather,” Bud remembers. “They called it fog, but that’s not fog. That’s a cloud, and you’re in it, and it’s not going anywhere.”

He remembers the influence of many of his teachers: Tom Waring, Col. Bob Wood, Frank Thomas, Max Cornelius, Bob

Moore, and Clara Williams. “We were kids and they were adults, and we never really thought much about what they were going through, but you could always count on them for a smile or kind word. I still shine my shoes, tuck in my shirt, and make my bed. It was a great education and I’m grateful that it introduced me to a world beyond my hometown.”

After graduating from SMA, Bud earned a BA from DePauw University before joining the U.S. Air Force. “My roommate Peter Odenweller was sent to Vietnam. I went to Korea. He didn’t get to come back. We were close, and I honor him every day,” Bud says somberly. Regaining his humor, he adds, “One thing I learned from my three years at SMA and four years of active duty is that I don’t like camping.”

With his active service ending, Bud knew that he didn’t want to stay in

the military, but if he didn’t have another plan, inertia would set in. He applied to Indiana University and took courses in mass communications. Eventually he transferred to the business school. One of his courses was in F.C.C. law, and it was there, in 1969, that he filled out that fateful application that qualified him for a radio station in Hawesville, Ky. It took three years before it was approved. In the meantime, Bud completed his MBA and did a stint with Leo Burnett advertising in Chicago.

Bud wanted a career in communications, but he knew it would not be behind a microphone. “When I was at DePauw, I saw how the college radio station helped to raise up the community, but I was a terrible deejay.

They made me do the farm report because of my Kentucky accent. If I was going to succeed, I needed to learn the business side.”

It’s that same optimism and resilience that allowed Bud Walters to be one of the early SMA alumni to embrace St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School.

That he did. Bud founded The Cromwell Group in 1972. The communications organization now has 31 radio stations in six markets and four states, employing 150 deejays, station engineers, marketers, and all the other professionals that go into a successful media outlet. His stations reach close to one million people each week.

Bud takes special pride in the ways that his business allows him to give back to communities.

His station in Decatur, Ill., recently raised funds for a 9-11 memorial. Another station raised $25,000 for hurricane relief. A station in Mattoon, Ill., raised $250,000 for St. Jude’s Children's Hospital this year and has done so every year for the last several years. “If there’s something happening in small town America where we have a station, we’re involved.”

Despite the ups and downs of life, Bud considers himself very lucky. His wife, “Flip,” died unexpectedly at an early age in 1991 followed shortly by his mother.

“At the time,” Bud remembers, “I thought life was over. I have now been married to Rosemary, a retired neuro-nurse, for 22 years. We've had wonderful experiences and look forward to more with family and friends. I've learned that tenacity counts.”

It’s that same optimism and resilience that allowed Bud to be one of the early SMA alumni to embrace St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School. “It’s not about alma mater,” he says. “I’m pretty stoic about that sort of thing.” Bud sees SAS for what it is, a school that offers a great education for young people with the added benefit of being close to a university campus. He is grateful that when many military academies ceased to exist, SAS gave him and his classmates a home. He especially enjoys the Alumni Weekend opportunities to honor former classmates at the annual memorial service on the former SMA campus and will be glad to see “The Last Cadet” statue placed at that location in 2018.

“It’s strange to think that there are only 10-15 more years of alumni who were cadets,” Bud reflects. “You have to give (the Rev.) Bill Wade (former SAS Head of School) so much credit for holding the schools together. So many of the military academies just vanished. St. Andrew’sSewanee School exists because people cared and found a way to keep a prep school in Sewanee.”

In 2004, Bud combined his love of radio with his love of Sewanee by establishing a radio station for St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School, FM 103.1 WMTN-LP. Bud donated most of the station’s equipment and provides technical assistance. “The Mountain” provides an eclectic mix of programming in a non-commercial, public radio format to a 10-mile radius.

Bud hopes to spark SAS student interest and understanding of how media works and its impact, especially in the broadcast field. Station manager (and Director of Alumni Relations and Special Events) Lizzie Duncan ’76, a former radio personality herself, shares Bud’s vision. Lizzie has set a goal to get every student on the radio at least once each year, whether as a deejay, host, or contributor. She hopes to move the station beyond music programming to include interviews and shows that let students highlight what they are

learning in their classes. Bud envisions a biology minute or a series that helps to educate listeners on government and citizenship. “WMTN-LP is St. Andrew’s-Sewanee’s voice to the community,” explains Bud. “It’s an enrichment opportunity for students, but it’s also a public relations tool and recruitment tool. There is an opportunity for every teacher and every student to contribute.”

Bud created the station at the suggestion of Grammy-award winning producer/ songwriter/musician Shannon Sanders when the two came together at a Leadership Nashville Music retreat. Bud was happy to find a way to reach an underserved audience in Nashville, the town he has called home since 1974.

All 31 Cromwell stations can be heard via the iGoRadio app. Bud also recommends NEXTRADIO, an app that turns a smart device into an ‘over the air radio’ in an emergency when internet or cell service is not available.

Radio couldn’t have a better spokesperson than Bud. “In 1962, 93% of people listened to the local radio station. You know what that number is now,” he asks. “It’s still 93%. Our reach is greater than the internet or television, but people don’t realize that because listening to the radio is a secondary activity, and you’re not getting billed for it. It’s what you do while you’re driving or while you’re cooking dinner or shopping. There are 13,000 stations in the United States, more than ever. The internet hasn’t killed radio; it has made us stronger.”

The industry has changed, though. In the 1970s, a big broadcaster could capture 30% of the market with a single station. Now it takes 5-6 stations to capture the same market share.

Just as Bud rolled with the change from SMA to SAS, he has adapted his business as times change. Recent evidence of this is the launching of “The

He received the National Radio Award in 2014 and is in the Broadcasters Halls of Fame in Kentucky, Illinois, and Tennessee. He has served on the Boards of the National Association of Broadcasters, Radio Advertising Bureau (Chairman), Tennessee (Chairman) and the Kentucky Association of Broadcasters, and others. He also serves on the Board of Trustees of DePauw University.

In 2009, an ice storm knocked out power to 1.3 million residents of Kentucky. The Cromwell Group’s eight Owensboroarea stations helped residents make it through by providing people with information about where they could get gas and food and when they could expect power to be restored. It is a contribution in which Bud takes great pride. “In the recent hurricanes, people lost their cell service. They lost their electricity. They lost their television and internet. You know what they didn’t lose? Their radio stations. Radio is a life saver.”

Past Employees and Friends The Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Alan Batkin died in a motorcycle accident on June 6, 2017. Fr. Batkin attended Emory University, beginning a devotion to life-long learning which led to a doctorate in ministry and a passion for teaching and counseling. He attended seminary at the University of the South. In 1973, he was ordained in the Diocese of Atlanta and served Episcopal churches in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. He received a doctorate from Lutheran Southern Seminary in Columbia, S.C. He and his wife, Marguerite, taught and coached at St. Andrew’s School from 1970 to 1972. He is survived by his wife, two sons, including Drew Batkin ’00, two daughters-in-law, and six grandchildren.

Harriet Lowndes Rhett Maybank Hutson, the wife of former Sewanee Academy headmaster Henry Hutson.

She died June 15, 2017 in Charleston, S.C. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Pope Maybank Hutson SA ’79, a son, and extended family.

Alumni Betty Quintrell Chadwick SMS ’40 of Ooltewah, Tenn., died on June 25, 2015. Mrs. Chadwick was the first woman to graduate from the University of Chattanooga with an accounting degree and became the first female Certified Public Accountant in the state in 1969. She went on to become a partner in an accounting firm and later started her own firm.

Mrs. Chadwick, her husband, and son started C & C Oxygen Co. in 1975. The company is still in operation. She was a member of the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, receiving the President’s Award in 1994; the American Women’s Society of Certified Public Accountants; the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; and the People to People Citizen Ambassador Program, through which she traveled to China, Russia, South Africa, and Japan.

Mrs. Chadwick is survived by three children, seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.

John Gass III SMA ’40 of Lookout Mountain, Ga., passed away on May 26, 2017. Raised in Sewanee, he

served in WWII in the U.S. Marine Corps where he was in the first wave to attack Iwo Jima. He was wounded in battle and awarded the Purple Heart. After the war, he returned to Sewanee to attend college. Following graduation, he moved to Chattanooga where he worked for Volunteer Life and later served as CFO of Arcade Printing.

He was president of the United Way and the Lookout Mountain Golf Club. One of his greatest joys was sponsoring a stained glass window at All Saints’ Chapel in Sewanee commemorating his father, Henry Markley Gass, who was professor of Greek and Latin and the first Rhodes Scholar at the University, and his mother, Marguerite Rather Gass. He is survived by two children and four grandchildren.

Thomas W. Hutson, Jr. SMA ’40 died March 29, 2017. Dr. Hutson received his BS from the University of Florida and his MD from the University of South Carolina. He spent six years in surgical residency at Jackson Memorial Hospital. He served in the U.S. Navy and was awarded the Commendation Medal for Service.

Dr. Hutson was a former member of the Dade County Medical Assoc., Florida Medical Assoc., Southern Medical Assoc., and the American Medical Assoc. He was a clinical instructor of surgery at the University of Miami Medical School, an ER physician at Murphy Medical Center, and director of emergency services. He served as emergency director for Cherokee and Clay counties and was a member of the American College of Emergency Physicians. Dr. Hutson served on the faculty of Tri-County Community College. In 2008, Murphy Medical Center dedicated their new Emergency Medical Wing in his honor. Dr. Hutson was an avid outdoorsman. He was a scout leader for 35 years and received the prestigious Silver Beaver award. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Hutson; two sons and two daughters; and extended family. He was preceded in death by his brother, Edward Douglas Hutson, M.D., SMA ’40.

Digby G. Seymour SMA ’40 died April 27, 2017. Dr. Seymour, an anesthesiologist in Knoxville, Tenn., attended the University of Tennessee but joined the U.S. Army prior to graduation. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin Medical

School in 1948 and completed residencies at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Memphis and Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. He served as a medic and Air Force surgeon during the Korean War. Dr. Seymour was author of Divided Loyalties: Fort Sanders and the Civil War in East Tennessee. In a eulogy of Dr. Seymour, Jack Neely wrote in his Knoxville Sentinel blog, “His scholarly approach is warmed by a longtime personal and family involvement in the subject...

His combination of good scholarship, clear and personal narrative, and lots of pictures and diagrams most people had never seen before, brought the horrors of war alive...”

He was a former member of Sardis Lodge F&AM and Sardis Council of Atlanta. He was associated and active in Trinity by the Sea Episcopal Church in Port Aransas, Texas. He was an avid fisherman and RVer. He was predeceased by his wife and daughter. He is survived by two sons, 12 grandchildren, 21 greatgrandchildren, and extended family.

Thomas Davis Runck SMA ’41 died on March 14, 2017. He spent four years in the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corp. and was awarded a Bronze Star. Mr. Smith had a successful career selling office supplies and furniture as vice president of Business Equipment Co. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Smith Robinson; one son and two daughters; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Brantly Walker Helvenston III SMA ’45 died on March 12, 2017.

He attended the University of Florida and Florida State University and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Mr. Helvenston joined his family’s insurance agency, BW Helvenston & Sons, Florida’s oldest independent agency.

He was a member of Kiwanis, Jaycees, and Barrett Lodge BPOE #1165.

He was the longest serving member of the City of Live Oak zoning board.

He served as a founding member of the Suwannee River Water Management District and as Suwannee County Democratic Party Secretary.

He was predeceased by his wife, Laura Harriett Cantrell. He is survived by three children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Robert T. Cottam, Jr. SMA ’43 passed away May 22, 2017. Known as “Moby”, Mr. Cottam participated in the V-12 Navy College Training Program at Duke University. He was a radarman in the U.S. Navy during WWII on the U.S.S. King and the U.S.S. Sacramento. Mr. Cottam spent a long and successful career in sales, was an avid gardener, and loved spending time outdoors.

He is survived by his wife, Winifred Wall Cottam; three sons; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and extended family.

Robert Burns SMA ’44 received AB and JD degrees from Emory University and an MS from the University of Colorado. He was a member of Chi Phi social fraternity, Phi Delta Phi Legal fraternity, and SIE business fraternity. He was admitted to the State Bar and the Supreme Court of Georgia in 1951 and the U.S. Supreme Court in 1955. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1952 and retired in 1977 having served in Greenland, Germany, the Philippines, and the United States in various legal capacities, concluding his career as General Counsel for the Army and Air Force Exchange Service. He was awarded the Army and Air Force commenda-

Andrew Hooper Mizell III SMA ’45 of Nashville passed away June 4, 2017. He received his BBA from Vanderbilt University and was an accountant for McIntyrie and Associates. He was with Ingram Oil Company for 11 years. In 1963, he started Transit Ready Mix, Inc. He was a member of the Associated General Contractors, Associated Builders and Contractors, National Federation of Independent Business Men, Tennessee Road Builders Association, Boat Owners Association of American, the Honors Course, Belle Meade Country Club, and Royal Palm Yacht and Country Club in Boca Raton. He was Past Commodore of Commodore Yacht Club. Preceded in death by his first wife, Yolanda Mattei Mizell, he is survived by his second wife, Waldi H. Mizell; a daughter and son; two grandchildren, and extended family.

A.W. “Gus” Tucker SMA ’45 died July 10, 2017. Mr. Tucker, a veteran of WWII, graduated from the University of the South, and earned an MEd from the University of Miami. He retired as a teacher for the Richmond Public Schools. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline Miles Tucker; two daughters and two sons; three stepchildren; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and extended family.

Donald E. Steiger StA ’46 died Nov. 10, 2014. Mr. Steiger was a journeyman for the Carpenters Local Union 929 and an aviation mechanic for the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was also a magician and a professional gambler.

He appeared in the 1947 movie Wild Harvest. He was predeceased by his brother, John R. Steiger StA ’41. He is survived by his daughter, three stepchildren, five grandchildren, two greatgrandchildren, and extended family.

Augustine “Gus” Smythe Weekley, Jr. SMA ’46 died April 12, 2017.

Dr. Weekley attended the University of Kentucky and Duke University. He received his MD from Boston University and opened his Tampa surgical practice in 1961. He was a Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He was chief of staff at Tampa Bay Community Hospital and chairman of the department of surgery at University Community and Tampa Bay Community Hospitals. He practiced medicine until he was accepted to Stetson University College of Law, graduating cum laude with his JD in 1989. He combined his expertise in medicine and his knowledge of law to practice health law. He also earned his real estate and broker’s licenses, a general contractor’s license, and his student pilot’s license. Dr. Weekley is survived by his wife, Marilyn Mancuso; his second wife, Aldona Mary Weekley; JoLynn Sherouse Weekley; three children; two step-sons; and four grandchildren.

Claude Curtis Bullock, Jr. SMA ’48 died August 19, 2017. He was predeceased by his wife, Carolyn Virginia House Bullock. He is survived by two daughters and four granddaughters.

A lifelong resident of Mobile, Ala., he attended The University of Alabama, and served two years in the U.S. Army. He co-owned Gulf Coast Motor Co. and was an agent for John Hancock Life Insurance Company.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Epis-

copal Church, Springhill Preservation Society, Country Club of Mobile, and several mystic organizations.

Charles Oscar Youtsey SMA ’48 of Winter Haven, Fla., passed away August 17, 2017. He served in the U.S. Army and graduated from the University of Florida with a BS in agriculture. He spent 38 years with the State of Florida’s Registration Bureau ultimately overseeing the program.

Mr. Youtsey was an elder at Covenant Presbyterian Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Searles Youtsey. He is survived by two sons, four grandchildren, two greatgrandsons, and extended family.

Joseph Hammond Hardison, Jr. SMA ’50 died April 4, 2017. At SMA, he lettered in three sports, served on the honor council, and graduated Cum Laude. He attended Duke University and the Duke University Medical School, graduating in a three-year accelerated program. He was a member of the wrestling and swimming teams.

Dr. Hardison served as a Lt. Commander CDR in the U.S. Naval Reserve medical corps. He held fellowships in internal medicine, cardiology and gastroenterology at the Mayo Clinic. In 1964, he and his wife founded Hardison & Parr, a medical practice that became Raleigh Internal Medicine Associates. Dr. Hardison served on the medical staffs of the three Raleigh hospitals and was the first chairman of the department of medicine at Raleigh Community Hospital. He served as president of the Wake County Heart Association and the Raleigh Society of Internal Medicine and on the board of governors of the American College of Gastroenterology. He was appointed to a clinical professorship in the department of gastroenterology at the UNC Medical School. He was on the Raleigh board of directors of First Union Bank and the board of directors of the former Edwards and Broughton Company. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Cynthia Ann Stoltze; two sons; one daughter; and two grandchildren.

Robert E. Adams SMA ’51 died April 18, 2017. Mr. Adams received a BS in agriculture from Auburn University and served two years active duty in the U.S. Army as platoon leader. He began his career at Thiokol Chemical and Monroe Business Equipment in Huntsville, Ala. In 1969, he was recruited by lifelong friend, Guy Spencer, Jr. SMA ’51, to join Alabama Oil Company,

now The Spencer Companies, as manager of the Huntsville plant. He served as executive vice president and COO of the corporation until his retirement and served as president of MidSouth Ice, a division of The Spencer Companies. He continued his military career with the Alabama National Guard and joined the 279th Signal Battalion as Company A Commander, eventually serving as Battalion Commander.

He retired with the rank of colonel.

He served two terms as president of the Huntsville Historical Society and was a member of the Sons of the American Revolution. From 1991 to 1997, Mr. Adams served on the SAS Alumni Council and the Board of Trustees, proving to be one of the school’s earliest and strongest alumni connectors for SMA. He is preceded in death by his wife, Eugenia Adams. He is survived by two daughters, one son, and seven grandchildren.

David Bryan McConnell, Jr. SMA ’51 passed away August 4, 2017. He attended LSU where he studied geology. Mr. McConnell was a member of the Athletic Club of Shreveport, the YMCA, the Shreveport Gun Club, and Shreveport Bicycle Club. He was a Master Mason and a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. He is survived by his two daughters, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Mack A. Carroll StA ’52 died May 1, 2016. Mr. Carroll was a graduate of the University of Florida and former Director of the Florida Environmental Institute. He was an active member of the Lake Placid American Legion Post 25 where he held many leadership positions. He was twice past president of the Rotary Club of Lake Placid. Mr. Carroll is survived by his dog, Molly, and extended family.

James Davidson Gilmore SMA ’52 of Nashville passed away April 4, 2017.

Mr. Gilmore graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1956 and served as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps. His construction and engineering accomplishments included Kroger stores, office buildings, condominiums, and apartments. He retired in 2010 from the Parkes Companies. He was a member of American Mensa. He is survived by his wife, Martha; one son; one daughter; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. The family requests that memorial gifts be made to St. Andrew’s-Sewanee School.

Roger P. Enzor SMA ’53 died March 14, 2017. He attended the University of Florida and was a real estate professional in the Pensacola area, receiving several state and local awards. Mr. Enzor served as the National Association of Realtors Federal District Coordinator for Rep. Jeff Miller and coordinator for Sen. Don Gaetz.

He was twice appointed to and served as the Chairman of the Florida Real Estate Commission. He was involved in several local civic organizations and was an active and dedicated member of Cokesbury Methodist Church at Summit. He is survived by his wife, Dee, and extended family.

Norman E. Gammons SMA ’53 passed away on March 20, 2017. He is survived by his wife, Virginia; his brother, Vance Gammons SMA ’54; one daughter; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Born in Cowan, Tenn., Maj. Gammons was a 1957 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. He took his commission in the U.S. Air Force, retiring in 1978 as a Major. He spent more than four of those years in Vietnam, mostly as a Forward Air Controller, flying cover for Special Forces. His love for travel took him to all seven continents and over 100 countries.

Howard Collins, Jr. SMA ’54 died April 25, 2017. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years as a member of the Honor Guard at Arlington National Cemetery and graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry. Dr. Collins practiced dentistry for over 31 years in Shreveport, La. He enjoyed music and sang in a barbershop quartet for many years. Dr. Collins is survived by his wife, Bobby Sue Whitehead Collins; a daughter; two grandchildren, and extended family.

Hartwell Harrison Williamson, Jr. SMA ’54 died May 28, 2017. He graduated from the University of Memphis and was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army. He retired from the City of Fort Worth Housing Department and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Survivors include his wife, Tee; two children; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and extended family.

James M. Crawford, Jr. SMA ’55 died April 13, 2017. He received a BA in philosophy from Vanderbilt University and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Mr. Crawford was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and became a paratrooper (101st Airborne) and a Ranger. He was a member of Mensa. His business life was spent in commercial real estate. He retired in 2007 as a nationally acclaimed appraiser. He is survived by his younger sister and extended family.

Rufus Ralph Hughes II SMA ’55 died on June 12, 2017. Mr. Hughes grew up listening to stories told by William Faulkner in Oxford, Miss. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in architecture, and spent his career as a professor, retiring in 1993 as assistant dean at Georgia Tech School of Architecture.

He taught abroad as a design critic at the École des Beaux Arts and École d’Architecture in Paris, as well as in Russia, Uzbekistan, and Eurasian Georgia.

He was inducted into the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows in 1992. He received numerous state and national awards. Noteworthy projects include Hewlett Packard corporate headquarters, the Catholic Center at Georgia Tech, and the McKenzie residence. He raised two boys with his first wife Nancy Caroline Askew.

In retirement, Mr. Hughes moved to Little Rock with his wife, Carol Marotti Hughes, who predeceased him. He is also predeceased by his brother, James R. Hughes SMA ’52. He is survived by four children and seven grandchildren.

Thomas D. Roberts II SMA ’55 passed away May 27, 2017.

Col. Roberts graduated with special forces training from the U.S. Military Academy in 1959. He served tours with the Green Berets and the 101st Airborne Division, returning for a tour of duty at the Pentagon. He earned his MA in international affairs from American University. As Lt. Colonel, he commanded the 1st Battalion, 4th Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division in Aschaffenburg, Germany, helping to safeguard the NATO alliance from the Soviet threat during the Cold War. He served on the staff of the Infantry School at Fort Benning and as Director of the School of International Studies at the JFK Special Warfare Center at Fort Bragg, completing his military service as Sr. Advisor to the 77th US Army Reserve Command. He retired from active duty at the end of 1981.

His decorations included the Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star, Special Forces tab, Ranger tab and Vietnam Cross. He is survived by his

wife, Marty; one daughter, one son, his five grandchildren; and his brother, Maj. Heyward B. Roberts, Jr. SMA ’53.

Hubert S. Bramblett StA ’56 died May 31, 2017. He was a retired Navy machinist mate chief aboard the USS Enterprise and received several medals and commendations for exemplary action. After retiring from the Navy, he moved to Mobile. He owned Bramco Distributors, and served as chief engineer of Mobile Mental Health. Mr. Bramblett is survived by his wife, Jean; two children; a grandson; and extended family.

Cedric Stovall “Ted” Reynolds SMA ’57 died March 9, 2017. He was a professor of American literature at Washington University in St. Louis, the University of Ohio, and UNC Greensboro. Mr. Reynolds co-founded Stovall Life Science, a biotech company that earned several US patents. He was known and revered for his recipe for Manhattan cocktails, for which some will forever thank him. He was predeceased by his oldest brother, George Reynolds SMA ’45. He is survived by his wife, Rita George Reynolds; his brother, Albert Reynolds SMA ’48; sister-in-law Helen Buck Reynolds SMS ’50; and extended family.

Frank Chapman “Sandy” Housley, Jr. StA ’58 died March 9, 2016. He graduated from Kennesaw State University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and served in the U.S. Navy. He worked for Control Data Corporation and founded Chapman Computers in 1982. He worked at Chattahoochee High School in Alpharetta, Ga., from 1994 until his retirement in 2009. He said often that two things “saved his life” when he was young: St. Andrew’s School and the kindness of a social worker. Mr. Housley is survived by five children and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

John David Fasick SMA ’59 passed away July 2, 2017. Mr. Fasick was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He worked with several banks during his career, retiring in 2009 from First National Bank of West Georgia. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie Meade Fasick; two children; two grandchildren; one step-son; and his sister, Esther G. Little, SMS ’50. John was preceded in death by his brother, Clyde A. Fasick, SMA ’52, Jr. and his sister, Helen Ann Van Sickle, SMS ’56.

Edward “Ted” Alexander Quintard, Jr. SMA ’59 died July 21, 2017. He attended Auburn University and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a retired founding partner and vice president of operations at CPQ Professional Imaging. Mr. Quintard was dedicated to working with Boy Scouts of America Troop 616. He is survived by his wife, Cathy; four children; three grandchildren; his mother; and extended family.

Craig Alan Depken SMA ’60 died July 19, 2015. He earned his BSME from Purdue University and his MSME and PhD in mechanical engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology. He formed his engineering consulting company, Design Associates (DEA), performing forensic engineering analysis of incidences when humans and machines intersect and testifying in state and federal courts. He was a registered professional engineer, and a member of Tau Beta Pi mechanical engineering honorary society, Sigma Xi scientific honorary society, and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He was inducted into the Order of the Engineer at University of Tennessee-Chattanooga in 2014. He enjoyed the challenge of growing hydroponic vegetables and continued his research into sustainable energy for small farms. Dr. Depken was an alumni mentor for SAS students and visited campus several times to meet with science classes. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine Depken, and three children.

Mark H. Burnett SMA ’61 passed away September 29, 2016. Mr. Burnett, a nurseryman, was a lifelong resident of Bradenton, Fla. and a member of Elwood Baptist Church. He was a member of the Florida Anthropology Society and Tampa Bay Fossil Club.

He is survived by wife, Josephine; five children; one sister; four step-children; and nine grandchildren.

Charles Whitten Walter, Jr. SMA ’62 died June 23, 2017. He graduated from Auburn University with a BS in business administration and was a member of Kappa Alpha Order. Mr. Walter recently retired as a consultant for ToyoTechs in Atlanta. He gave countless hours as a volunteer for Metro Atlanta Recovery Residences, Inc. of which he was a 13-year alumnus. He is survived by his sister, four children, and nine grandchildren.

John Gordon Finney SMA ’64 died May 7, 2017. He was employed by

the Hernando County School System in Florida for over 38 years, serving as coach, educator, and principal. He was an exceptional athlete, excelling in baseball during the early 1960s as a fireball pitcher playing in high school, college, and with the historical Mt. Valley Baseball League. He is survived by his wife, Emilie Keister Finney; one son; two daughters; seven grandchildren; two greatgrandchildren; and extended family.

John L. Shumard, Sr. StA ’68 died on September 22, 2017. He attended Vanderbilt University, Tennessee Technological University, and Georgia Institute of Technology. In high school, he was a talented athlete and in later life took up tennis. He was the owner and operator of Shumard Logging. He is survived by a son and daughter; two brothers, including Jim Shumard StA ’69; one sister; and extended family.

James W. Beasley, Jr. StA ’71 passed away May 11, 2017. Mr. Beasley is survived by his wife, Cathy Hill-Beasley; three children; three stepchildren; his mother; one sister; 15 grandchildren; and extended family.

Colin Lindsey Green SA ’73 died March 7, 2017. Mr. Green attended the University of Mississippi, where he majored in business. He co-owned PFG Precision Optics and was vicepresident of sales and marketing. He was a member and former president of the American Precision Optics Manufacturers Association. has 37 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, including working for Fort Worth’s Van Cliburn Foundation and, most recently, as Executive Director for the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation. “I have moved from the concert hall, to the dugout, and now to the mountain top in my career trajectory,” Janet said. “I look forward to working with the SCCF board to strengthen the opportunities and lives of the citizens of this beautiful plateau.” She and her husband, Brown, have three daughters, Mollie, Blaire, and Katy.

Jonathan Thomas Stratman StA ’66 lives in Oregon where he writes an adult mystery series featuring an Episcopal mission priest and a youth adventure series, both set in Alaska. A seventh mystery, The Old Rugged (Double) Cross is due out later this year.

Bill Yarbrough SMA ’69 was elected to a two-year term as convention delegate for the Nashville chapter of SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists). He was also elected as an alternate national board member and may be called upon to serve at national board meetings when the representative from the Nashville Local is unable to attend. He is pictured at the October SAG-AFTRA National Convention in Los Angeles.

Bill lives in Winchester, Tenn., and participated in the Alumni Work Day on campus in July.

Charles Davis StA ’73 is the rector of All Saints Episcopal Church in Clinton, S.C., after serving for 16 years at the Cathedral in Columbia. He and his wife, Alicia, live in Columbia, S.C. 1970s Mary Herbert Love StA ’72 visited campus in April with her husband, Charles. They edit Charleston Style and Design magazine and split their time between Charlotte, N.C., and West Palm Beach, Fla. Mary and Charles also attended the Charlotte art gallery opening of artist Elliott Puckette ’85.

Anne Marsh SA ’78 lives in Austin, Texas where she is a lecturer in French at the University of Texas. She wrote, “I'm finally back in the classroom after 13 years away, and despite all the technology that’s supposed to make life easier (and doesn't), I'm loving it!” Anne is a leader for her upcoming Sewanee Academy reunion in June.

Martin Knoll SA ’78, University of the South professor of geology, served as project director for Tenneswim, a 652-mile swim of the Tennessee River by professor Andreas Fath of The Furtwangen University in Germany. Martin helped to coordinate partnerships among the University of the South, the Tennessee Aquarium, the Nature Conservancy, the University of Georgia River Basin Center, the Tennessee Valley Authority, Tennessee State Parks, the Ijams Nature Center, the River Discovery Center, and the Riverview and Lyndhurst Foundations of Chattanooga to support Fath’s research into the quality and health of the Tennessee River. The team took daily water samples for analysis of pharmaceuticals, pesticides, bacteria, and heavy metals.

Martin was joined by his wife, SAS Head of the Middle School Marion Knoll, and students Aidan Smith ’21 and Zolon Knoll ’22, as well as Jack Agricola StA ’68 and his son, John Agricola ’02.

Lydia Lane ’88 visited campus in October with her husband, Tim Trieschmann, and sons, Caleb and Taylor. The family lives in Little Rock, where Lydia is an ophthalmologist with the Little Rock Eye Clinic, specializing in glaucoma. She hopes to return to SAS in June for her 30th reunion.

Taylor Root ’89 is pictured with his wife, Katie, and daughters, eight-year old Margaret and five-year old Ginny, during a summer visit to campus. The family lives in Maitland, Fla., where Taylor is the state pricing and programming manager with Southern Wine and Spirits.

1990s Aaron Brockett ’90 lives with his wife, Cherry Anderson, and their two kids in Boulder, Colo.

Their 14-year-old son, Jasper, just started high school and 11-year old daughter, Eliza, is in sixth grade. Cherry and Aaron started a software firm in 1999 that has grown into an eight-person company specializing in web application development. Cherry focuses on social justice issues and recently helped start a Boulder chapter of the NAACP. After serving on the Boulder Planning Board, Aaron dove into the local political scene and is in his second year of a four-year term on the Boulder City Council.

Jana Russell Garner ’90 stopped by campus with her family on their return from a vacation in North Carolina. Jana received her JD from Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law. She is an attorney with Reeves & Stewart in Selma, Ala., where she lives with her husband, Paul, son, Sam, who is in 6th grade, and daughter, Fairchild, who is in 4th grade.

Bill Priestley ’93 is the broadcast and digital media director for the Campbell University athletic department. He visited campus in May and is pictured in the SAS radio station, WMTN-LP, The Mountain. Bill has launched his own online course, The Dream Job Factory, which is dedicated to helping high school and college students focus their dreams into careers.

He completed six videos to aid parents and started the podcast, Pathfinders, where he interviews guidance counselors, college career services personnel, coaches, psychologists, and industry leaders on what they do to help students find their path. Bill will return to campus in February for the SAS Career Series. He and his wife, Dawn, live in Raleigh, N.C. Jason B. Guerard ’95, his wife, Laura, and their family moved from Florida to Northwest Ohio in 2016. Jason and Laura work for the Black Swamp Bird Observatory in Oak Harbor, Ohio. Laura is the education director and oversees the Ohio Young Birders Club (OYBC). Jason is the outreach director. He oversees offsite environmental education programming and presentations. Jason also coordinates The Biggest Week in American Birding, the premiere birdwatching festival in the country.

Jana Loyd Barnett’96 joined the SAS staff in August as school store associate. Jana attended the College of Charleston, Trident Technical College, and Southeastern School of Neuromuscular and Massage Therapy. Her son, Raulston, is a member of the 6th grade this year. Jana and her husband, Rob, are moving the family to Monteagle from South Pittsburg, Tenn.

2000s Morgan Matens ’00 accepted a full-time position at Wishing Chair Productions, the Nashville Public Library’s puppet troupe. Morgan will be creating puppets and puppeteering shows. Ajani Banks ’01 returned to Tennessee in September as a birthday present to himself.

He visited campus and attended the Mountain Lions’ football game in Franklin, Tenn., where he had dinner with the team after their fourth win of the season. Anjani lives in Detroit.

Aggie Wright Stephenson ’01 and husband, Andrew, welcomed their second daughter, Lillian Kate, in May. Lillian is pictured with her older sister, Sara, who is three. The family lives in Chattanooga where Aggie is the community engagement director for the Tennessee Aquarium, and Andrew is vice president of product management and strategy at Crowdcheck. Aggie started her first term on the SAS Alumni Council in September.

Tommy Lovell ’03 and his wife, Haylee, welcomed their first child, daughter, Caroline, on July 17, 2017. Tommy received his BS in geology from University of Tennessee – Chattanooga and MS from The University of Alabama. The family lives in Houston where Tommy works with Chevron Corporation as an exploration geologist.

Hamilton Shook ’04 married Jacob Charlson on May 6, 2017 at the Cathedral Church of the Advent in Birmingham, Ala. The couple moved to Nashville where Hamilton is the clinical operations manager in the drug development unit working on phase one cancer trials at Sarah Cannon, the cancer research institute of HCA. Jude Ziliak ’05 was awarded the 2018 Jeffrey Thomas Award from the American Bach Soloists.

Jude is a violinist who specializes in historical performance practices. He has been a member of the American Bach Soloists since the beginning of the organization’s 25th season in 2013. Jude is a member of the Renaissance music ensemble, Sonnambula, and the Clarion Music Society. He is also on the faculty of the Lucy Moses School and Special Music School (P.S. 859), New York's public school for musically gifted children, where he established a Baroque performance program with the support of an outreach grant from Early Music America. Jude and his wife, Elizabeth, live in Manhattan.

Chelsey Barry Willis ’06 married Tom Willis on July 8, 2017 in Highlands, N.C. Carly Westling ’09 married Jared Stensland in September. Carly’s brother, Porter Westling ’08, and sister, Morgan Westling ’11, were in attendance. Alex Barton ’07 was ordained a deacon in the Episcopal Church on June 3, 2017. He is a member of the clergy staff at Church of the Redeemer in Lorain, Ohio, where he lives. Alex is also project developer at the Episcopal Diocese of Ohio.

Alex Tucker ’09 moved to Bozeman, Mont. and works with the park service.

He graduated from Montana State University with a BS in psychology and hopes to return to school for an undergraduate business degree or an MS in social work. He also works at the high-end resort Yellowstone Club and is a ziplining guide in Gallatin National Forest.

SAS faculty member Osei Hill ’07 was stylishly relaxed as he enjoyed the August 21 solar eclipse on the SAS football field where the entire school gathered to witness the event. Coach Hill teaches visual arts, coaches girls' varsity basketball, and is the lead house parent for Upper Harvey house.

Zach Huffman ’09 is in South Korea where he teaches middle school English at the Busan Foreign School.

He previously taught elementary school there.

Alexis Rollins Bennett ’09 received her doctorate in physical therapy from the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga and is a physical therapist with Erlanger Health Systems in Chattanooga where she and her husband, Andrew, live.

2010s Anna-Grace Owens ’11 graduated from Eckerd College with a BA in interdisciplinary arts and has moved to South Africa where she is working on her second BA in interaction design at Cape Town Creative Academy. She works for a local textile designer and in their design store, Skinny La Minx. She wrote, “I returned to Cape Town to see my birthplace for the first time. I’ve been here two years now and crazy enough, live in the neighborhood I was born in, the famous Bo Kaap, with

a family from my dad’s old parish. To this day, I think about my time at SAS and how lucky I was to get that type of education and community. You guys were the best.” Anna-Grace is pictured at St. Paul's Guest House which was started by her parents.

Spencer Wilson ’12 graduated from Colorado University with a degree in Computer Science. He was a lecturer at CU for the summer before starting work as a software engineer with Northrop Grumman in Aurora, Colo.

Jenna Burris ’14 is a senior at Middle Tennessee State University and a member of the school’s golf team. She spent much of the spring semester in the number one spot for the Lady Blue Raiders. She notched four top 20 finishes in five tournaments and won her first individual title at the Conference USA Championship in Fort Myers, Fla., this April, shooting a career low 7-under par, 209, the second-best score in school history.

A mini reunion was held at the beach by SAS friends (clockwise from the bottom left) Stella Parris ’13, Kayley McDowell ’14, Aly Barry ’14, Jasmine Render ’14, Margarita Parris ’14, and Ashley Barry ’14. Stella attended Stetson University and is the chief operating officer for TSOLife, a web application company founded by a classmate. Margarita currently attends Stetson.

Kayley is enrolled at University of South Florida in St. Petersburg, Fla. Jasmine studies mass communications at the University of West Georgia. Aly and Ashley both attend Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga. Allison Bruce ’15, a junior at the University of the South, is studying abroad in Copenhagen for the fall semester.

Vanessa Moss ’16, Joshua Alvarez ’16, and Emma Zeitler ’16 who were inducted into the Order of the Gown at the University of the South.

Also gowned on the same day were classmates Tommy Oliver ’16 and Tom Simerville ’16. The Order of the Gown recognizes academic achievement with the criteria for eligibility lowering as a student becomes more senior. All five SAS alumni were “gowned” as sophomores, the earliest possible opportunity and under the highest criteria.

Volunteer Work Weekend

Sewanee Area Alumni Gathering

This year’s work weekend participants had the daunting task of creating a new space for our school store in order for it to be up and running by opening of school in August. Our largest group of volunteers to date transformed a storage room into a beautiful retail space. Kudos and thanks to our many alumni volunteers who help us year-round.

The annual gathering for Sewanee area alumni was held on September 9 at Angel Park in downtown Sewanee with our largest attendance ever.

The event is held every year in conjunction with the fall meeting of the SAS Alumni Council.

t. Andrew’s-Sewanee School completed its 2016-17 SAS Fund campaign on June 30, 2017 with $617,532 in contributions from 861 donors, exceeding the $600,000 goal for the year.

Approximately 50% of SAS Fund contributions came from alumni of the school. The school also received support from parents, grandparents, churches, businesses, foundations, friends, and employees. In fact, 93% of SAS employees made a donation to the school last year.

I am grateful for our volunteer fundraisers and staff for what was a team effort in making this year’s SAS Fund campaign a success.

The SAS Fund provides 10% of the school’s operating budget and enhances every aspect of the school experience, including academic, athletic, and artistic programs. It also helps to fulfill the school’s mission to provide educational opportunities for those students for whom such experiences might not otherwise be available by helping to provide financial aid to more than 50% of the student body. In 2016-17 that amounted to over $2 million. Only a small percentage of financial aid is provided through endowed funds.

In addition to gifts to the SAS Fund, last year the school received $416,000 in contributions for our chapel restoration efforts, ongoing campus safety planning, and scholarship and other endowment initiatives. We are truly grateful to all of our generous benefactors for their belief in our mission.

Last Cadet M E M O R I A L S TAT U E

O

N JUNE 2, 2018, DURING ALUMNI WEEKEND and the celebration of 150 years of secondary education on the Mountain, The Last Cadet Memorial Statue will be dedicated in front of Quintard Memorial Hall on the former Sewanee Military Academy campus.

This life-sized bronze statue will recognize and celebrate the singular experience of generations of SMA cadets. The first classes began at the “Junior Department” of the University of the South in 1868, a scant three years following The Civil War. The next year there were enough students to organize the Sewanee Grammar School. In 1908, the school was renamed the Sewanee Military Academy and continued operations as such until the end of the 1971 academic year when Sewanee Academy succeeded it.

Pamela Sue Keller, a nationally recognized sculptor and Professor of Art at Athens State University, in Alabama, is creating the mold for the casting of the bronze statue. The base will be a stone similar to that used in the construction of Quintard Hall.

This statue is made possible through generous donations from former cadets and friends of SMA, acting to honor, commemorate and preserve individual and collective experiences at the Academy. It is their fervent aspiration that the timeless principles of academic excellence, moral and social responsibility, and observance of spiritual and military traditions which identified and defined the daily life of every cadet who passed through the Academy’s doors, never be forgotten.

The unveiling of the Last Cadet Memorial Statue on June 2, 2018, will surely be a memorable event for those who are able to return to the Mountain. It will be preceded by the annual SMA Memorial Chapel Service and followed by a reception in Cravens Hall.

The Last Cadet Memorial Statue Committee has raised more than $61,000 from 130 contributors to meet the cost of creating and erecting the statue. Additional contributions are encouraged and are still being accepted.

une 1-3, 2018, will be the kickoff celebration of 150 years of Episcopal secondary education on the Mountain. Along with the dedication of SMA’s Last Cadet Memorial Statue, we will celebrate the final graduating class of St. Mary’s School, have our 3rd StA Rejoice!

Reunion, honor Elliott Puckette ’85 with the Distinguished Alumni Award, and offer a special choral concert and

reception for Sewanee Academy alumni.

All SAS dorms will be open for campus accommodations, but with the University of the South also offering a newly structured class reunion weekend, Director of Alumni Lizzie Duncan encourages SAS alumni to book their off-campus accommodations now. “The Sewanee alumni office has been very generous with providing event space and

golf tee times for our celebratory 2018 weekend, however there is only a limited number of hotel and motel rooms on the Mountain. Some alumni groups like to share houses or cabins, and I encourage folks to be in touch with me for area accommodation suggestions if they are seeking rentals. It may be the largest Alumni Weekend in our school’s history, and we want to ensure that our alumni have lodgings.”
