The Sasta® brand originates in 1969 when Urpo Saastamoinen, an avid hunter and outdoorsman could not find suitable clothing for hunting and decided to create a frieze-suit for himself. The suit immediately caught the attention of Urpo’s fellow hunters. The suit that provided unique functionality, was something unheard of at the time.
Still today functionality is one of the core elements in the development of new garments at Sasta®. Sasta® is still run by the same Saastamoinen family, continuing to develop world class garments that combine modern technology with the traditions and craftsmanship of over 50 years of experience.
Sasta® Story
The story of Sasta® is also a story about the ingenuity and perseverence. What we call innovation today, was simply the need of a young man in Nurmes, Finland to have the best outfit for his hunting trips in the wilderness of Northern Karelia.
From a young age Urpo Saastamoinen has wandered and hunted in the vast wilderness areas of Northern Karelia. In these last true wilderness areas of Northern Europe shelters and marked paths are far apart. Already from the early years Urpo understood the importance of good equipment and clothing –when you head into the wilderness, you go there with humility and respecting the might of mother nature and the harsh terrain of the wilderness.
The first hunting outfit made by Sasta® was made of SARKA wool. When Urpo showed up in a hunt for the first time in his new outfit, a suit that provided unique functionality, was something unheard of at the time and understandably immediately caught the attention of Urpo’s fellow hunters who subsequently wanted a similar suit for themselves –the market research was conducted right then and there, says Urpo now decades later.
Once it was apparent that there was a demand for functional outdoor-clothing, it was logical to start creating additional products. Quite quickly this SARKA wool outfit got alongside other functional clothing designed for the tough conditions that the local outdoorsmen faced. Many of those classic outfits designed decades ago are still found in our collections in their original state or modified with the development of materials and production.
Based on the guidelines set-up by Urpo, Sasta® still works closely with the local hunters as well as other outdoor professionals, testing the products in real conditions by real users. Improvements and new ideas are quickly moved forward to a prototype stage and actual testing. These processes combined with the experience of decades of hunting and being outdoors in the harsh wilderness of Northern Karelia, is also the base of our R&D and gives us the confidence to provide great products for the most demanding hunters and outdoor-users.
Heritage since 1969
This is a story of a Finnish familybusiness, with deep roots in the last true wilderness area of Northern Europe, Nurmes. Sasta’s story begun from a need to survive in the harsh wilderness of Northern Karelia.
1969
The Sasta brand originated from the invention of making a hunting outfit of Sarka-wool.
In the beginning it was only intended for personal use of Sasta’s founder, Urpo Saastamoinen, but the word spread quickly and the demand grew – laying the foundation for larger scale production.
1970 - 1979
Sasta’s product range grows. Additional outdoor garments are created alongside the original Sarkawool outfit. With the new models, also new materials are introduced in to the collection, such as cotton and oil-finished materials.
Year-round production is needed alongside the hunting collection and thus Sasta also introduces a childrens collection. The new models are well received in the market.
The business expands and is now spread between 3 different locations in Nurmes.
1980 - 1989
Sasta builds a new industrial building to centralise operarations. There are now more than 100 people working at Sasta.
Camoflague hunting outfits are i ntroduced into the collection. Also the first waterproof taped garments are introduced.
Alongside children’s active outdoor clothing, a line of outdoor-clothing is also introduced for adults. The craze towards windbreakers in the Finnish market is also reflected in the Sasta collection.
The two main export-markets at the time are Sweden and Norway.
1990 - 1999
Sasta becomes one of the first licensees of Gore-Tex. The number of products made with Gore-Tex grows in the Sasta collection and alongside the Gore hunting items also waterproof items for Outdoor use and Skiing are introduced. The famous Sasta Wolf is introduced to the market.
Sasta decides to focus on the manufacturing of Hunting- and Outdoor-clothing and a decision is made to stop the childrens collection. The outdoor collection grows. The first Polartec®-fleeces are introduced by Sasta.
The export business grows and Sasta is awarded for it’s growing Export business.
2000 -
Sasta’s reputation as a manufacturer of technical and high-quality hunting and outdoor clothing keeps getting stronger. The development of new materials is followed closely and Sasta continues to test it’s products where they are intended to be used - from the Last True Wilderness Areas of Northern Europe, to the tough arctic conditions of both the North and South Pole.
Sasta continues to focus on making products that stand the test of time both in Design and Durability. Emphasis on sustainability and a respect for nature continues to be in the core of business practices at Sasta. Production is focused in Europe and overseen from Finland to ensure the quality and function that Sasta users have learned to trust over the years. The story continues.
Over 55-years of heritage – a cross-section of our collection
Our collection includes many items that draw inspiration from our history and some are even in their original form. We also work with many of the same heritage materials - such as Sarka-woolas were used in the very beginning of Sasta, some 55-years-ago.

The First Finnish South Pole Expedition 2008
Kari Poppis Suomela and Pasi Ikonen skied unsupported to the South Pole in December 2008. The Finnish expedition’s journey across the world’s coldest continent, Antarctica, was over 1000km long and took about 50 days to complete. During this time the two-men expedition had to fight against extremely low temperatures, freezing winds and physical exhaustion. Their mental strength was, no doubt, tested on a daily basis. Sleds weighting over 100kg each and the ice cap rising to 3000 meters slowed the expedition down. SASTA supported the team by providing them skiing shells made of Gore-Tex® 3 layer material. The special details of the Everest -jacket and Storm -trousers were developed in close co-operation with the team especially for this certain trip.

Sasta Materials
Sasta Q. 33
Sasta Q.33 fabric is used in a variety of trekking, hunting and outdoor clothing. The composition of the fabric is 65% recycled polyester and 35% organic cotton.
The paraffin wax finish on the surface of the fabric gives more body to the fabric and makes it dirt-repellent.
Thanks to the PFC-free C0 (PFC Free) Nikwax Cotton ProofTM treatment, Sasta Q.33 fabric is water-repellent. Sasta Q.33 fabric is durable despite its light weight.
The fabric also protects against wind and mosquitoes and is highly breathable.
Garments made of Sasta Q.33 can be retreated by Nikwax Cotton ProofTM when needed. Please explore more about retreatment https://www.nikwax.com
Wool
Wool is a breathable material with excellent thermal insulation properties. It absorbs and transfers moisture effectively, without ever feeling wet. It is the only fiber that keeps you warm even when it is wet. Wool has natural water- and dirt-repelling properties, and it is easy to keep clean by airing.
Recycled Wool
Recycled wool is made from recycled fabrics and old scraps of knitwear, spun together with virgin fibres using the traditional recycling techniques of Italy´s Prato Green district. Recycled Wool is virtually water repellent and washable field wool. The material is highly breathable, warm and wind resistant fabric due its boiled and tightly woven structure. We are using Recycled Wool in various “SARKA” wool jacket and trousers, and wool flannel shirts.
Ventile® ECO Organic
Ventile® ECO Organic is made from sustainably grown organic certified cottons that have not been exposed to pesticides or chemical fertilizers and use low impact processing methods and materials. Ventile Organic is woven from premium extra-long-staple cotton that represents only 0.04% of the overall cotton produced worldwide. This unique fully twisted cotton yarn increases garment durability and lifespan. This reduces the unnecessary frequency of consumer purchases, limiting the negative impact of textiles production upon the environment. Ventile Organic is produced using PFC free Durable Water Repellency (DWR).
Ventile® is a densely woven, very breathable and durable fabric from 100% cotton. Ventile® is not coated or laminated. Instead, the cotton fibers swell when wet, making the fabric tight and water-repellent. Thus the fabric provides excellent protection against wind, rain, snow, and cold. www.ventile.co.uk
Polartec® Thermal Pro®
Technical fiber compositions maintain a soft texture and air pockets for thermoregulation and breathability. Knit with premium polyester yarns, Thermal Pro® is cozy, resilient, and stylish. The products made of Thermal Pro® can be used as a mid-layer or as its own. Sasta is using Thermal Pro® fleece fabric which is made of 77 % recycled polyester (pet bottles).
Kenytex®
Kenytex® is a hardwearing fabric made of polyester and Kevlar® brand fabric. This super protective material, with superior strength and durability is made of 93 % polyester, 7 % Kevlar®. The material is easy to care, and is water, oil, and soil repellent.
Organic cotton
Cotton is a soft, breathable material that absorbs moisture extremely well. Organic cotton is produced without harmful fertilizers, with minimal effect on the environment.
lavalan ®
lavalan® is the highly functional fibrefill solely made from natural and renewable raw materials, wool and corn. Wool is a technically advanced fibre made by nature that provides unmatched breathability, cozy warmth and a constant body climate regardless of activity levels or altering weather conditions. Beside its thermoregulating properties, wool is capable to neutralize bad odours for a longer use without unnecessary wash cycles. This makes lavalan® the perfect insulation for everyday life and multiple day adventures. Washable – Mulesing free - Made of traceable European wool.
Corporate Responsibility
We are guided by the old Finnish philosophy of respecting nature, which takes many notions. It directs our sustainable thinking in design and production, while it also underlines the old wisdom of Finnish outdoorsmen – equipping yourself properly when heading out into the wilderness.
With our roots deep in the last true wilderness of Northern Europe, we want to do our part to ensure that our nature is preserved also for future generations. We are paying increasing attention to the environmental impact of our operations and are constantly working to find responsible ways to provide more responsible clothing for demanding wilderness conditions – clothing of high quality and function, that last a long time.
MATERIALS
We choose materials that are best suited for the intended use of our products and can be trusted in tough wilderness conditions. Firstly, the materials we use must be durable, easy to maintain and as environmentally friendly as possible.
Different recycled materials have been used in our collections for decades. For example the cotton-polyester blend we use is made from organic cotton and recycled polyester, the raw material for which comes from used plastic bottles. Our classic Sarkawool consists of recycled wool, which is old wool waste that has been torn into fibres and then remade into fabric. Our merino wool items consist of mulesing-free merino wool, which guarantees better living conditions for sheep. Finally, most of the cotton we use is organic.
We try to also look beyond just the materials we use, and as an example, the cardboard boxes used as packaging material are partly made from recycled materials - and in our own operations, we re-use boxes as much as we can.
We work hard to minimize the use of substances, that are harmful to the environment. We have been phasing out the use of long-chain perfluoroalkyl compounds in the material finishes (so-called C8 finishes) for many years. Many of our products have already a C0 finish (PFC free) and our goal is to move to it step by steps, as material suppliers are able to offer us such options. We also keep a close eye to avoid material loss and carefully plan the use of all the materials we procure.
We are constantly investigating the availability of various new materials and their suitability for our needs and for the type of garments we produce. Whenever possible, we switch to more environmentally friendly materials, unfortunately they are not yet available for all needs. For example, virgin polyester is still widely used in hunting products, as we have not found suitable alternatives made from recycled materials. Our suppliers continuously keep developing more responsible materials and give us a an even wider range of responsible material alternatives to choose from. That allows us to keep improving on the amount of responsible materials used, without making compromises on the quality and function of our clothes.
You can find more detailed information about the materials we use, their origin and certificates on our Materials page.
REPAIR SERVICE
Extending the lifespan of a garment can significantly reduce its carbon footprint. Therefore it is especially important to us that our products wear well against both time and use.
We have also provided a repair-service for our products throughout its history, since 1969. If the garment breaks down, or needs smaller repairs, we advise you to repair the product rather than discarding it or buying something new. More information about our repair service can be found here. Alongside repairs, caring for your products is as important to extend the life of a garment. Detailed care instructions for Sasta products can be found on our website - and by following these instructions, you can extend the life of your clothes even further.
FACTORIES
Sasta’s products are manufactured in carefully selected factories in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, China, India and Bangladesh. Of the total amount of materials (kg), we used in 2021, 87 % of our total production has been in the European Union and 13 % in the Far East.
The majority of production takes place in the European Union, where factories are bound by EU legislation on environmental and human rights issues. The proximity also allows for better communication and monitoring of our manufacturing partners.
The factory in China is BSCI certified.
ELECTRICITY
At Sasta’s head office in Nurmes, we have chosen zero-emission hydropower for our use. Electricity is GO-certified.
Through our electricity supplier, Pohjois-Karjalan Sähkö Ltd, we are involved in a project to dismantle the Louhikoski hydropower plant and free Sararojoki as a natural river route.
OUR SUSTAINABILITY WORK CONTINUES
We are constantly striving to improve our operations - and that also concerns all aspects of being more sustainable and responsible as a company and business. We want to reduce the environmental impact of our deliveries and increase the transparency and measurability of our operations.
Our next goal is to calculate our company’s carbon footprint. We have signed the Scandinavian Outdoor Group’s climate initiave and we have pledged to be a carbon neutral enterprise by 2030. We have also joined the Carbon neutral textile 2035 -commitment launched by Finnish Textile & Fashion because we want to be involved in creating a carbon-neutral textile sector in Finland. With the commitment, we will have access to a carbon footprint calculator that meets the requirements of the standard for calculating the carbon footprint of organizations in accordance with the international Greenhouse Gas protocol. In addition to developing its own operations, the outgoing company is also committed to promoting low-emission operations in global value chains.
We intend to reduce our carbon footprint by avoiding unnecessary travelling and changing the materials and packaging of our products to more environmentally friendly. We intend to compensate for the remaining emissions in the future.
Guarantee and Repair Service
We give clothing and accessories of our production a warranty of at least one year. The warranty covers material and manufacturing defects. Depending on the defect, a product covered by the warranty will be mended or, if mending is not possible, replaced with a new, similar, or equivalent product. With Gore-Tex® products, we follow Gore’s GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRY policy.
GORE-TEX GUARANTEE
Gore provides direct assistance to consumers in the unfortunate event they have an issue with their product and need to inquire whether it is covered under the GUARANTEED TO KEEP YOU DRYTM promise. Consumers receive a high level of service expected from the GORE-TEX brands, with the execution of the promise according to our established warranty policies, condition-based acceptance criteria and common practices. Gore is taking care directly of the evaluation going forward.
The decision on whether a product is covered by the Gore-Tex® warranty is made based on case-specific evaluation of the material, in view of its condition and age, in accordance with instructions from W. L. Gore & Associates. Each product for which a claim has been made will be inspected and tested in the manner required. When the evaluation has been completed and if the product is deemed to meet the warranty conditions, it will be either mended or replaced with a new product. The warranty does not cover wear resulting from normal use or damage resulting from improper use or poor care.
Here you will find links to Gore-Tex™ website, where you can find their Consumer Service (Care & Support / Guarantee and Returns / Contact Us) and their complaint form.
The telephone number for Gore’s Europe wide Consumer Service is 00800-2314-4000.
We would like to remind you that if the product has a manufacturing defect, for example the snap button has come off, Sasta is naturally responsible for the defect and will repair or replace the product.

Please include the following information inside the package:
• sender’s contact information
• a brief description of the defect and any special observations
