Noteworthy in 2023-24 The 2023–24 school year will bring some changes to Singapore American School. We are excited to offer a few new courses and additional learning options for students. While details regarding many of these changes are included in other sections of this guide, the following are some of the highlights.
NEW COURSES FOR 2023-24 •
Modern Philosophy (Social Studies Department) The Social Studies department is excited to add a semester course offering for our grade 10 - 12 students. Modern Philosophy will afford students the chance to develop fundamental knowledge and skills to critically examine contemporary ethical and philosophical situations. Students will examine concepts such as logic, ethics, reality, and happiness to construct arguments and explore philosophical writings.

AT Nonfiction and Rhetoric (English Department) The English department is delighted to roll out this new advanced level course, aimed at students who enjoy reading and writing nonfiction texts (including speeches, narrative nonfiction, and argumentative essays). In AT Nonfiction and Rhetoric, students will explore contemporary issues and diversify their approaches to rhetoric. Students will work in editorial teams to publish a collection of essays, so the course requires a high level of independent writing skills and collaboration.

AT Science: Computational Modeling & Simulation (Science Department) The Science department is looking forward to adding AT Science Computational Modeling & Simulation to our course offerings in 2023-24. The course is well positioned for any student looking to deepen their understanding of the ways in which computer-based models inform understanding in the sciences. The course will introduce students to mathematical methods and computational approaches using a variety of programming languages and platforms, such as VPython, Excel and Google sheets, MATLAB, and STELLA. Students will create visual representations of models, develop relationships between modeled components, gather data from hands-on activities, run simulations, and generate and analyze results. The course covers a wide range of application areas, including physics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, and more. The course is a semester-long elective, open to grades 10-12.
The Visual Arts department is thrilled to offer two new, semester-long advanced topics courses in 2023-24. These new courses afford students additional opportunities to delve deeper into the arts and fulfill their Catalyst graduation credit. •
AT Visual Arts Collaborative Creation The new AT Visual Arts Collaborative Creation course is designed to allow students to explore and engage with art from their personal area of focus. Students will deepen their understanding of the visual arts process by working collaboratively with others toward the common goal of generating art for and within a community.

AT Visual Arts Catalyst The new AT Visual Arts Catalyst course allows students the free choice to identify, select and explore artists, artworks, and cultural contexts that interest and motivate them. Students will decide what is relevant and useful for their own investigations and how to apply knowledge and understanding to transform ideas into art that is simultaneously thrilling, daunting, and important. This course fulfills the Catalyst credit requirement.
