Welcoming new employees in the workplace
A significant part of your role is to help members feel welcome in the workplace and knowledgeable about how the union can assist them. The new hire is going to be thinking about many things:
• Should I really be here? • What’s expected of me on the job? • Can I do the job? • How will the other workers accept me? • Where did they say the rest rooms and vending areas are? • What should I remember about what the boss told me? • Who is my union rep? • What does it mean now that
I’m a member of SGEU?
The first day is when the new hire needs a friendly welcome. Many CBAs have a negotiated time for new member union orientation. If you have these provisions, check with your supervisor and work out a time to meet with the new union member.
