It is our opportunity as a school family to support one another and all of our children who benefit from this wonderful school. The Concert for Financial Aid at St. Andrew’s is our only fundraising event and its sole purpose is to raise money in support of our students who need financial assistance to attend our school. St. Andrew’s is a special place. Our students are blessed with thoughtful programs and devoted teachers who nurture their minds and their souls. And regardless of financial ability, we want every one of our students to grow and learn in this environment because we believe that our students can and will do great things far beyond our classrooms, stages, chapels, and fields. Why Financial Aid Support Matters A high-quality education is not taken for granted by SAS senior Michelle Robles, a financial aid recipient who began her career at St. Andrew’s Middle School in 2007. The first in her family to go to college, Michelle’s determination, academic excellence, and a passion for learning and serving, combined with faculty and family support, paved the way for her success. A stellar student and volunteer, Michelle is also the first St. Andrew’s student to be accepted to college through the Questbridge program, which matches outstanding, lowincome students with educational

Additionally, Michelle applied for the Questbridge National College Match, requiring her to rank 8 of the 35 QuestBridge partner colleges and universities as her top choice schools, engaging her in an early binding college admission option if she were accepted to one of these schools. Michelle knew early on that she was looking for a smaller college or university where she could major in biology. She always dreamed of going to school

complete with a scholarship for tuition, books, other fees, plus money to travel home. Michelle described her emotions as “excited, relieved, and mostly really happy that her mom won’t have to worry about paying for college.” Michelle will be the first in her family to complete college (over 70% of QuestBridge students are) – something that makes her proud. As for Vassar, Michelle is eager to get started. If her high school experience is any indicator, she’ll weave herself right into the fabric there as she has at St. Andrew’s, where she’s been involved in the Latin program, Breakthrough Austin

opportunities that might not otherwise be within their reach. In the words of Questbridge representatives, “Intelligence, talent, motivation, nobility, and grit are distributed across the entire economic spectrum of America’s youth.” Michelle, who excels at Latin and devotes hours of volunteer service to a variety of non-profits, is no exception. During her tenure at St. Andrew’s, Michelle learned about QuestBridge, a program that links exceptional students with partner colleges, scholarship providers, enrichment programs, employers, and organizations seeking students who have excelled despite obstacles. By facilitating these exchanges, the program aims to increase the

outside of Texas in order to experience something different. She reflected on her experiences in schools in Austin (Menchaca Elementary School and St. Andrew’s) as key in encouraging her to look at places with many opportunities for involvement, small classes, and passionate, involved teachers. By the end of October, Michelle learned that she was a finalist in the College Match program — an outstanding student who had excelled in challenging classes in addition to meeting other criteria. Although she worried that the odds were still not in her favor, good news arrived. In December, Michelle learned she was a match with Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York,

mentoring, and also at El Buen Samaritano and the Dell Children’s Center. St. Andrew’s Financial Aid Program benefited Michelle and her family but Michelle’s contributions far exceeded our own. Her talent and tenacity positively impacted her peers, her teachers, and will carry on as she begins her college career at Vassar and beyond. As part of our school’s genuine interest in developing the best and brightest in Austin, it is critical that financial aid continue to support those who need it. We all benefit from students like Michelle, and other students who receive financial aid, and are so grateful to those who support the program that enriched her educational experience (and ours!) at St. Andrew’s. In the spirit of celebrating all that is near and dear to us – our students – the Concert for Financial Aid is “Going Local” and bringing local talent, food, and fun to our 31st street campus where we can be surrounded by the faculty, facilities, and fields that support our children and help them grow. The Concert for Financial Aid is our Go Local campaign. By supporting the financial aid program, you are appreciating and celebrating all our local families, from all walks of life, and the incredible community that we all build together. The vibrancy and connectedness we foster by encouraging and supporting socioeconomic diversity extends well beyond our school walls. And the sense of community and togetherness is what makes St. Andrew’s such a special place to be. We hope everyone will “Go Local” on April 5 and support St. Andrew’s Financial Aid Program. We all benefit from sharing our local and unique stories and from sharing this place; thank you for your commitment to all of our students and their futures. Every Shade of Green

Austin is just about the hottest city in the country. Summertime temperatures notwithstanding, everyone wants to be here, move here, live here – and find a home here. That’s good news to someone like Kimberly White Erlinger. As a co-founder of E3 Properties, she is a trend-setter in the capitol city’s red-hot real-estate market. Her firm, which deals only in residential properties, embraces what she calls the triple bottom line of sustainability: Environment, Equity and Economy. In other words, E3. “It sounds very wonky, but here in Austin it is a very popular concept,” says White Erlinger, who is also the company’s managing broker. “Suitable homes should be available to everyone, regardless of income, and sustainability should be a prosperous venture.” To that end, the Austin-based firm has been in the forefront of capitalizing on the city’s passion for all things green. Austin is the only city in Texas and one of only a few in the U.S. to require an energy audit before a home sale. What’s more, homeowners in this town are, in general, a well-educated bunch when it comes to green building and energy efficiency; they know what they want, and they want it to have as small a footprint as possible. Thanks to the lingering drought, more Austinites are opting for smaller yards with less grass and more drought-tolerant plants. While White Erlinger hasn’t crunched the numbers, everything points to an increasing demand for green homes. “Demand is huge,” she says. “Not everyone can find a home with solar panels, brand-new double-pane windows and reclaimed hardwood floors, but we like to find the home that has a few green features or one with plenty of potential.” 16| SAS Concert 4 Financial Aid

This native Houstonian with deep Austin roots – her greatgrandfather was the celebrated South Austin City Council member Ben White – didn’t start out in real estate. After graduating from the University of Texas, she spent many years outside the state, in Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, working in the television business as a writer and producer. In 2005, she moved back to Austin with her family. Not long afterwards, while attempting to figure out how to maintain harmony between her professional and personal lives, she had the bright idea of combining her interests in architecture and interior design to launch a new career in real estate. Not one to let even native grass grow under her feet, she got her license and formed EcoBrokers in 2007. The team had an amicable split, with White Erlinger and another co-founder, Patricia Sylvana, retaining ownership of the firm and with three other realtors, formed E3 Properties in 2010. What’s more, in a prescient move, White Erlinger achieved the designation of “ecobroker” in 2007, and was in fact, part of the first group of ecobrokers in Austin. The firm now has five agents, two brokers, and a tagline that leaves no room for doubt: All Austin. All Properties. Every Shade of Green. Given these go-go days, you might think that expansion would be on E3’s horizon. The team currently works throughout Austin and Central Texas, and White Erlinger wants to keep it that way for now. “Expanding to too large an area could potentially dilute what is important to us and what is special about us: our client service, our love of Austin and our community, and our knowledge of green real estate and sustainability.”

The Quality of Community

Carol Huntsberger never dreamed she’d go into the seafood business. The Dallas native and her family were living in Austin when the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 occurred. Her husband, who had been working in the financial services industry, lost his job, but received a severance package that would allow the Huntsbergers to follow their dreams. At the time, a college friend of theirs owned Quality Seafood, in operation since 1938. Neither one of them knew anything about seafood or running a restaurant, but they approached their friend about possibly doing a second location. Instead, he offered to sell them the business. It was a big leap of faith. “I swore I would have nothing to do with the business,” recalls Huntsberger, who was busy as a sales director at Mary Kay Cosmetics at the time. “I had 75 women on my sales team, our kids were in school, and I still had to find time to be a mom.” That was in January 2004. All that changed nine months later, when she got a call from the bookkeeper telling her that there was only enough money in the company’s bank account to either pay the employees or the fish vendor. Huntsberger began working at Quality Seafood almost immediately, using her accounting background to clean up the books. That first year the business lost nearly $200,000. Then she decided to break the company into three parts – retail, wholesale and the restaurant – and started making the sales calls herself. “We had to start selling fish,” she says. “I did a lot of research, I made mistakes, and I learned the business the hard way.” The following year, Huntsberger pulled off an impressive turnaround; the business lost only $3,000. By the third year,

Quality Seafood made a profit of $3,000 and she took home her first paycheck. She also fired her husband, who by then had found a job in his field. In 2010, when she and her husband divorced, Hunstberger retained full custody of the business. Huntsberger credits St. Andrew’s for supporting her through those first bumpy years. More than once, the school offered her the opportunity to cater events and get her name out there among St. Andrew’s families. That sense of community also played well with her two children, both of whom graduated from SAS (2009 and 2011, respectively). “St. Andrew’s is a slice of heaven,” she says. “When I look at what my children gained from going there – self-esteem, the ability to learn, an appreciation for the arts, learning two languages – I can’t say enough good things about the place.” Recently, Huntsberger has been busy expanding the business. In 2011, she bought the Quality Seafood building and began construction to expand the facilities from 8,000 to 16,000 square feet, including a 2,200-square-foot freezer. It was, as she says, a big risk, but one that has paid off. Both the retail and wholesale businesses are booming, the restaurant is jammed virtually every night, catering services are increasingly in demand, and she has even added cooking classes to the schedule. Moreover, Huntsberger isn’t one to delegate; she is a working owner, present and accounted for six days a week. So when her customers ask whether or not she might consider opening a second location, she laughs. “Sure I’ve thought about it, but I’m pretty darn busy being in one place,” she says. “I feel like I have three businesses, and luckily they can interact with each other really well. There’s something about having an original and not dividing yourself or multiplying the business.” SAS Concert 4 Financial Aid | 17

An austin original

Even as Austin’s economy booms and its population soars – by some accounts, 115 people moved to the metropolitan area every day in 2013 – there are still a few natives who have called the city home for more than a year, or even a generation. Anna Lee is one of those people.

an undergraduate degree from Louisiana State University in elementary education and a master’s degree in social work from the University of Texas at Austin, she worked for a number of years as a counselor with a variety of organizations, including the Austin Police Department, the Austin Children’s Shelter and the Austin Independent School District.

A fourth-generation Austinite, Lee was born in the first Seton Hospital, as were her own children, and attended St. Andrew’s, O. Henry and Austin High. Her family history at St. Andrew’s is long-standing and extensive: Not only did her siblings, cousins and nephews students go to school there, but her daughters, current fifth and seventh graders, also attend.

Like so many Texans, Lee is also possessed of an entrepreneurial spirit. Together with her husband, Matthew, she started Téo Espresso, Gelato & Bella Vita, an Italian-inspired espresso, gelato and sorbetto café that has won national awards and recognition for its desserts and coffees. At Téo, she learned every aspect of the business, working as a barista and gelato server as well as in management.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Lee is an enthusiastic cheerleader for her lower-school alma mater. She believes that as many children as possible should have the opportunity to go there, regardless of their family’s income, and that ambitious goal lends an even greater importance to the annual financial aid fundraiser.

Then, about four years ago, Lee switched career gears and went to work in residential real estate. It was a natural progression for someone who has always been active in the community and knows it like the back of her hand. “My husband also thought it would be a great fit with my business and social work backgrounds,” she recalls.

“This event is extremely important,” Lee says. “If we don’t help other children have a chance to attend a school like St. Andrew’s, then we are only focusing on what is best for our own children and not other children in our city.”

Turns out he was right. Lee joined Tate Property, a secondgeneration Austin real estate company, and has been reaping the benefits of a hot housing market ever since.

As she watched her hometown has evolved from a sleepy capital to a magnet for the music industry, high tech and tourism, Lee herself has also reinvented herself professionally several times along the way, with great success. With 18| SAS Concert 4 Financial Aid

A Family Affair

Tacos are a mainstay for most folks in the capitol city. They satisfy every kind of craving, and they’re good for breakfast, lunch, dinner – and pretty much all the hours in between. And while there are dozens of great taco joints around Austin, few are as popular – or as beloved – as Taco Shack. That’s just what Orlando and Yolanda “Yoli” Arriaga, the husband-and-wife owners of the local eatery, like to hear. The pair met back in the 1980s, when Yoli came up from Weslaco, Texas to attend St. Edward’s University. Orlando, a multi-generation Austin native whose own parents graduated from Austin High and McNeil, was also a student there. They eventually married, and in 1999 decided to take the plunge and pursue Orlando’s dream of owning a restaurant. At the time, Yoli was teaching high-school biology in Round Rock, and Orlando owned a landscaping company. “Orlando likes to do business and has always been an entrepreneur,” Yoli says. “When this little joint became available, we felt it was time to go ahead and give the restaurant business a try.” That little joint turned out to be Taco Shack’s original location on Medical Parkway in the Rosedale neighborhood of Austin. Since then, the company’s growth has been nothing short of amazing. Taco Shack now boasts nine locations across the city, from downtown to north Austin to Round Rock. Yoli serves as the company’s office manager, while her husband oversees operations and facilities. Every location has its own staff, and most also have a manager.

According to Yoli, breakfast tacos are the hottest menu item, although the other tacos, enchiladas and Yoli’s tortilla soup are also popular. Not surprising, given the local population’s passion for eating out in the morning. It is, in fact, thanks to breakfast tacos that the Arriagas learned about St. Andrew’s. As she recalls, the St. Andrew’s staff often showed up at the Medical Parkway location in search of breakfast before the first bell. It was the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship. “We didn’t even have kids at the time, but the St. Andrew’s folks would come to the shack almost every day back when the school only went up to eighth grade and talk about what a great place it was,” says Yoli, whose daughters are now in fifth and ninth grade at St. Andrew’s. “The more we heard, the more we thought, “we’re going to send our kids there some day.’” Yoli emphasizes her desire that children of all economic means around Austin should be able to experience St. Andrew’s. That’s why she and Orlando – and Taco Shack, of course – are such avid supporters of the Financial Aid program and the annual fundraiser. It is, she notes, their responsibility to help in one way or another. “The Financial Aid program brings in kids from all over Austin who couldn’t otherwise afford to go to St. Andrew’s,” she says. “It creates diversity, which is good for the school, and it helps everybody in the community in the long run.”
