Sarthak Sood

Hi. I am a 6th semester student from Chandigarh College of Architecture. My biggest ally is that i’m an avid reader which has helped me formulate my own thoughts. I also like to indulge myself in sports to clear my mind. My experiences have made me aware of myself better and I look forward to working as an intern architect which will open me up to new possibilites and opportunities.

The Brief The residence was to be built for young entrpreneur who is on the rise. With his first breakout earnings he wanted to construct a new house with faith and good intentions.

It is located away from the city, isolated to filter the noise and let thoughts prevail.

The owner is an individual who is a bachelor and lives alone. He is an extrovert and a gracious host. But, he also likes to make use of the time he gets for himself to work and keep his spirit and mind together.

The residence has been divided into two zones; the lower one for the public and the upper one is the owner’s den.

The Brief Create a new response for a ‘public library’ through architecture. But, the brief also dictated that a comparitive analysis between Japan’s past and it’s crawl into the future. It’s past tells you about its bold traditions, respect to their true selves and their dedication to unite the soul and mind. And to take them forward, should this identity be forsaken and a new one be forged to understand an age with a digital front.

08

Trying to understand how to inculcate creativity and ingenuity, we studied the structure of a neuron. The idea of transmitting information led us to a direct analogy of our structure with that of a neuron. It is the powerhouse which fuels ideas and directs them.

The neuron is made up of a cell body where the information is generated and the axons act as circulation. The cells and axons are both interdependent on each other as transition and translation of information is as important as generating it.

09

Next, the person moves on to the spherical nodes, this is where ideas come to life, similar to a neuron.

The restful and dynamic transition spaces are where the person comes in contact with the reality of being an individual with his own ideas as opposed to society’s general pressure to work and live for the community.

The entrance narrows down to broaden the user’s perspective, an attempt to make them aware of their own selves.

03 Police Station Studio/Consultancy

11

The Brief The brief was floated by the department of police. The students were required to redesign a police station which could be used as a model across the entire state.

The idea was to forge a new identity for the police which was more approchable to the public. Another important requirement was to give the ‘munshi’ a positon where he could monitor the entire station. Security checks and vantage points were also a requirement.

Concept The punjabi word kirpan has two roots: ‘kirpa’ meaning mercy, grace or compassion, and ‘aanaa’ meaning honor, grace or dignity. The two opposite curves have been inspired by the kirpan, as a symbol of defence for the society.

Sikhs are expected to embody the qualities of a Sant Sipahi or ‘saint-soldier’ with the courage to defend the rights of all who are wrongfully oppressed.

Axonometric

This floor is entirely dedicated for the police force. With living quarters for both male and female officers, there are plenty of spill out spaces which make the spaces lively.

The atrium at the start is the prime public zone from where a fork is provided for the munshi and interrogation officers. The zoning is layered into three segments; public, semi-public and private. The munshi has been placed at a position so that he can monitor the entire station.

The basement is accesible through a ramp and is the maal khaana(abditory) for confiscated vehicles and large items.

Limitations

With information being communicated faster now, new innovations and breakthroughs occured at shorter intervals than ever before. We have been building up on our past knowledge and innovating new ways to overcome the problems we face and connect our present to the future.

Creativity can be regarded as the foremost manifesta tion of adaptability in the human brain. Any creature that strives to overcome the challenges posed by mutable environments must display creative behaviors.

While it is important to have a certain degree of independence for an individual to be creative, limitations imposed on the human brain help it to find untraversed solutions. These limitations give people the choice to decide and force them to make a decision.

15

Why are humans a resilient species? Step 1

Step 2

Step 3

Step 4

Tardigrade Tardigrades are among the most resilient known animals, with individual species able to survive extreme conditions that would be rapidly fatal to nearly all other known life forms, such as exposure to extreme temperatures, extreme pressures (both high and low), air deprivation, radiation, dehydration, and starvation.

Humans are the only species which can com municate their thoughts and ideas through the medium of language, pictures and physical rep resentation. This ability to communicate and express sets us apart from all other species. It helps us to have an archive of all the past knowledge we have collected as a species, and make use of it collectively.

Evolution Evolution is a matter of filling ecological and social niches. Information is passed on genetically through generations. The early human was an easy target for vicious predators at that time. The human brain evovled over time and developed skills of communication as mutual cooperation was the only way to survive. It was speech that made Homo sapiens sapient, that provided a competitive advantage as a hunter and an organizer of social life, that separated human beings from other animals.

The focus was stressed upon housing and healthcare. Modular elements which were easy to move, set-up and attachable were thought of as a solution.
