Dear Friends of SPX,
With a profound sense of gratitude, this annual report is presented to the St. Pius X School community.
Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our donors who gave $2,100,000 to the 2023-24 SPX Annual Fund, the school is thriving.
Your contributions have allowed St. Pius X School to grow and serve more students in grades six through twelve this year, nearly doubling our student body since 2022. This vital funding helped to create a welcoming, innovative learning environment for our students to develop their God-given talents, deepen their faith and strengthen their sense of community.
Driven by the new SPX Strategic Plan, St. Pius X School is building on our nearly 70-year Catholic tradition of teaching “goodness, discipline and knowledge.” The SPX Strategic Plan maps the school’s expansion and renews our mission as an independent Catholic School. It aims to unite the greater St. Pius X community in Christ, encourage students to be ethical leaders in the service of others, support highly qualified staff, state-of-the-art facilities and financial stability, and provide a top education for all students.
We acknowledge the challenges of providing the “best education for families in New Mexico,” but with your continued support, we are confident in our ability to meet them. Through your generosity, the tradition of academic excellence and spiritual growth will flourish for generations.
Thank you for your unwavering commitment to St. Pius X School.
St. Pius X, pray for us.
Noreen Duffy Copeland, Ph.D., President
Dear St. Pius X Family,
The theme of our 2023-2024 Annual Report, “Strength in Numbers,” reflects the powerful synergy at work within our community this past year.
From increased enrollment and growth of the student body, to the overwhelming support of our Annual Fund, it is clear that when we unite as one, the impact is profound. This year, the generosity of our donors has not only enhanced our students’ educational experience but has also propelled us forward in achieving key initiatives outlined in our Strategic Plan.
Our goals — deepening our Community of Faith, advancing our Community of Hope, fostering a Community of Love, and maintaining a Community of Excellence — remain at the heart of everything we do. Thanks to the collective contributions of our supporters, we’ve been able to make strides in each of these areas, whether through funding state-of-the-art facilities, bolstering student programs, or nurturing the spiritual and academic growth that is central to our mission.
As we reflect on a year of milestones, we are excited to continue building on this momentum with the support of our dedicated families, alumni, faculty, and friends. Together, we are not just meeting today’s needs but laying the foundation for an even stronger future.
Thank you for being a part of this journey and for exemplifying the strength in our numbers.
Sincerely in Christ,
Mike Deely, Head of School
Father John Trambley, President of School

From the moment she stepped onto the mat, senior Abigail Rael’s journey at St. Pius X School has been defined by resilience and discovery. Switching from dance to wrestling, Abigail embraced a new challenge that tested her limits and ignited her passion for growth, allowing her to grapple with new opportunities and thrive in the process.
“When I got my first varsity letter, I was like, ‘I can’t believe this is a thing.’ I didn’t even know there was a wrestling team for me or that girls could have letterman’s jackets,” Rael shared. “Usually it’s just the boys that get to wear them in the movies.”
Now, she’s writing her own Hollywood script.
“Until I got to high school, I didn’t know wrestling was something that was available to me,” she says. “But there was a team, and I found my family.”
Since discovering and honing her new craft, Abigail’s dedication to the sport has been evident, as she’s battled through concussions and a separated shoulder. And after competing in just eight matches as a freshman and compiling a 32-13 record her sophomore year, Abigail placed sixth in last year’s New Mexico Activities Association State Wrestling Tournament.
“Working through injuries and trying to become a better wrestler has been challenging,” Abigail shares. “But I’ve learned that if I give it my all, I will improve.”
Her coach’s mantra — “when you step on that mat, it’s 0-0 and anything can happen” — resonates deeply with Abigail and has even spilled beyond the mat.
“I apply that with my academics and keep that same mindset in the classroom,” she said. “You can’t give up or go down without a fight. When you step into that test room, you don’t know what can happen. Even if you’re unsure, you can still ace the test.”
Technology funded by the Annual Fund has also enhanced her learning experience. As she considers college options in Arizona and Pennsylvania, Abigail says upgrades to Google Classroom access and larger monitors have played a big role.
“I’m a visual person, so being able to see the lessons and visualize them has been really great,” she says. “I can communicate with my teachers better… and everything has become clearer.”
Embodying the spirit of being “Sartan Strong,” Rael says, “I think that means being confident in yourself, no matter what. It’s going into something without thinking, ‘Oh, I’m going to fail,’ whether it’s sports or academics. I have to go into everything thinking that I’m going to do my best and achieve whatever I can achieve, and never sell myself short.
“When I hear ‘Sartan Strong,’ it reminds me that I should never back down from anything.”
Senior Kameron Swanson’s journey at St. Pius X School has been one of transformation, discovery, and newfound confidence. Coming from Annunciation Catholic School, he initially focused on sports like soccer and basketball.
It wasn’t until he stepped into a drama class during his sophomore year at SPX, however, that Kameron truly found his home.
“I met some of my best friends in drama,” Swanson shares, reflecting on his time spent rehearsing, performing, and growing close with a group of fellow students who embraced him for who he was. “Here, I’ve found people who have genuinely accepted me and embraced my weirdness. I can be weird, they can be weird, and that’s okay.”
By junior year, Kameron had already taken on roles that pushed him beyond his comfort zones. He recalls his role as the narrator in Puffs, a Harry Potter parody, with a grin.
“It was my favorite show — a good kind of chaos,” he recalled with a smile.
But this newfound confidence wasn’t always there.
“I used to be a really shy person, with major stage fright,” Swanson admits. “That’s actually how I got into sound. I loved being backstage, learning how technical crews work, and how sets come together behind the scenes.”
Now, Kameron is a key player in the school’s technical team, running the soundboard during all-school Masses and school performances. He finds joy in the intricate world of technical and light design, even considering it as a future career path.
Kameron’s passion has flourished thanks in part to the resources made possible by the Annual Fund and hopes that subsequent upgrades and opportunities will take him to the next level.
“I’ve seen a lot of the money raised moved to technology upgrades for the whole school, and that’s helped us realize what we can do here,” he says, highlighting how investments in iPads, sound systems, and other technology have enriched his experience and that of his peers.
For Kameron, being “Sartan Strong” is about perseverance and passion in forging your own path and working hard to enjoy the journey.
“To me, it means being able to do a lot in a little amount of time,” he says. “I run sound for Mass, I run sound for shows, I act in shows, and I help around campus a lot. It’s a sense of staying strong, even when a lot of things are happening at once — doing your best as much as possible.”
In the halls of St. Pius X, there’s a name that resonates with warmth and unwavering commitment: Ms. Elisa Machtinger. For the past 21 years, Ms. Machtinger has woven her story into the fabric of the school while embodying the very essence of what it means to be a Sartan.
Her connection to SPX runs deep. She’s not just a teacher but also an alumna of the Class of 1999 and a devoted parent of two current Sartans: AvaMarie, a senior, the National Honor Society President, and school record-holding swimmer, and Ethan, a sophomore who excels in football, wrestling, rugby, and track.
History and AP U.S. History, and has organically become a legacy teacher herself. Bringing a depth of knowledge, a passion for learning, and a heart that was made to mold the minds of students, Ms. Machtinger — affectionately known as “Machs” — makes a difference through her own brand of teaching, facilitating and care.
“We make our kids strong civic leaders. We teach them to be change-makers — those that when they see something going on, how can they step in to fix it,?” she conveys. “How can these kids make a difference in their community? It’s about being ‘Sartan Strong’ and being strong community leaders.”
It’s not just about what she sees and accomplishes in Room 402, though. Ms. Machtinger’s dedication to St. Pius X is more than just professional — it’s personal. So, each year, she puts her money where her mouth is.
“I donate to the Annual Fund as a staff member and a parent because I believe in what we’re doing here. I believe in our mission,” Machtinger shares. “I wish that more parents could come on campus and see what these kids are learning and the innovations that are being made.”
We make our kids strong civic leaders. We teach them to be change-makers…
Proud of the tangible results achieved through the Annual Fund, Machtinger marvels at the instant impact of her gift, and the donations of others, and hopes others take notice.
Machtinger’s journey here is a testament to the school’s enduring impact.
“This place is family. It always has been,” Machtinger reflects. “Since I was a freshman, Pius has been such a wonderful community. And every year that you come, you have these legacy teachers who are here that just make you feel like you belong.”
Serving as the Department Chair of History, Machtinger teaches U.S.
“One of the biggest things you can see, which I’m incredibly proud of, is the promises made and promises kept,” she says. “We are not just saying, ‘Oh, we’re going to have an Annual Fund,’ but then not putting any of it into action. What we asked for last year, when we said we were going to give the students iPads – we gave them iPads. We said we were going to get a middle school; we got a middle school. We said we were going to put in school improvements all around the campus…it’s happened.”

The Annual Fund is the lifeblood of St. Pius X School, fueling our mission to provide an exceptional, faith-based education that prepares our students to lead, serve, and excel. It is through the Annual Fund that we ensure every Sartan has access to a learning environment that is challenging, creative, and inclusive. Your generosity provides essential resources that directly impact our highest priorities: academic innovation, arts and athletics, need-based financial aid, and campus enhancements that make St. Pius X a place where students can thrive.
More than 650 alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, businesses, and friends contributed over $2 million to the Annual Fund to support academics, classroom technology, safety and security, campus improvements, financial aid, athletics, arts, and campus ministry. With gratitude,

Ex-officio Members, St. Pius X School
Fr. John Trambley, President of School
Mike Deely, Head of School
Julie Cook, VP, Institutional Advancement
Dear Friends and Supporters,
As I reflect on the past year, I am filled with immense gratitude and pride for all that we have accomplished together at the St. Pius X Foundation. This annual report serves as a testament to the remarkable progress we’ve made on behalf of St. Pius X School, and I am excited to share the highlights of our journey with you.
One of the most significant milestones of the Foundation this year was the expansion of our board. What began as a dedicated team of four has grown into a vibrant and dynamic group of seventeen. Each new board member has brought unique perspectives, invaluable expertise, and a renewed commitment to our mission. I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to each of them for their willingness to serve and for the fresh energy and ideas they have contributed. Their dedication and hard work have been instrumental in helping us advance our goals.
Another major achievement this year was the impressive performance of our investment funds. Under the expert guidance of our funds manager, Michael Daly from Morgan Stanley, we saw our investments grow by 10.5%. This growth not only reflects the strength of our financial strategies but also underscores the trust and confidence you have placed in us. Michael’s expertise and strategic insights have been crucial in navigating the complexities of the financial landscape, and we are deeply appreciative of his contributions.
As we move forward, we remain committed to our mission and to making a meaningful impact on the growth of St. Pius X School. The progress we’ve made this year is a testament to the collective efforts of our board, Julie Cook — the school’s Vice President of Advancement — and its supporters. I am excited about the future.
With sincere appreciation, Tony Pino President, St. Pius X Foundation

In August 2024, thanks to generous donors, St. Pius X School opened a 300-seat chapel on campus to provide a dedicated space for worship, reflection, and spiritual growth, central to its Catholic mission.
This permanent chapel enhances the campus ministry component by offering a place where students, faculty, and staff can come together for prayer, worship and peaceful reflection. Early morning Masses during the week offer students a chance to start their day grounded in faith, fostering a deeper connection to God.
This sacred space, which can also be used for class reunion services, allows the school to nurture its community's spiritual needs, reinforcing the values of faith, love, and service at the heart of St. Pius X’s educational philosophy.

Much of 2023-2024 was reserved for the thoughtful planning of a new Alumni Plaza that will serve as a beautiful resource for both our alumni and current students.
Situated between St. Cecilia Hall and the Pastoral Center (formerly the Catholic Center), the two-acre space is named for Cincinnati-based alum Manuel Chavez '65 and his wife Cynthia, our lead benefactors for the project, and will feature a wide grassy area on the bluff with a perimeter crusher fines walking path, built-in seating around a circular design of commemorative bricks, a picnic area, and a concrete pad for entertaining or recreational basketball. The site will be punctuated with xeric plants and native shade trees.
In addition to the Chavezes, we wish to thank Rudy Guzman '90 and the Guzman Construction crew for making the massive earthwork possible, and to Scott Ashcraft ‘90 with Las Ventanas Homes for fabricating a large ‘X’ metal monument overlooking the bluff.
And finally, to our loyal alums and families, who purchased commemorative bricks that will encircle the monument, your collective contributions have contributed mightily to this project.
