In this vein, so are the last and very important days of Lent. It is not always about giving up something, but what else can we do to bring ourselves closer to God. Just thoughts!

I must apologize for getting the Parent Link out so late. We have had some tragedies here among staff that have taken a toll on all of us and slowed us down. Ms. Eiler?s father passed away last week. Tragically, we were notified that Mrs. Armenta?s husband passed away suddenly a few days ago. We are all covering for each other and caring for our personnel. Please keep in prayer our staff members.

Great things are happening at St. Pius X High School! Congratulations to the Choir and Orchestra programs who traveled to New York City for competition.

They had a great experience and achieved very well.

Congratulations to the science teachers on the success of their first Science Symposium. The students presented their projects for students, faculty and parents to see. It is the goal of every science teacher for their students to be able to explain the process of their research and its impact. To all the students, you did a great job!

Engineers use a program called SolidWorks for their project planning and implementation. It is a difficult program to learn. However, three of our students have mastered the program and their names now appear on the international list of SolidWorks user as certified masters of the program. They are: Sean Goodyear, Danny Pham, Tommy Pham, Michael Freisinger, and Ella Hooks. Congratulations to these budding engineers! There are a number of additional students who will be testing for certification in the near future. Good luck to these students.

In other news, the Consultative Council is looking for new members. Some of our members have seniors graduating and, although we would like them to stay, they are moving on as well. The Council need members on two levels: as members of the Council and members of committees. The Council meets quarterly and the committees meet when necessary to accomplish their goals. The Council is looking for members particularly in the areas of marketing for enrollment management, engineering for facilities, and finance to give budget and financial advice to the school. Members do not have to be parents of St. Pius X but have an interest in St. Pius X and Catholic education. Please call me at 831-8411 if you are interested in serving as a Council member or committee member.

FROMTHEFACULTY- FINEARTS NEWYORKHERITAGEMUSICFESTIVAL You only travel 2,000 miles to compete in front of nationally recognized clinicians, judges, and adjudicators for one reason, to win first place, and the St. Pius X Music department did just that, three times. On March 21, the Pius Band, Choir, and Orchestra traveled to New York City to compete in the New York Heritage Music Festival.

The competition took place in the historic Riverside Church located in Manhattan, near Columbia University. The same walls that echoed a sermon delivered by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a speech from Nelson Mandela, played host to the Sartans.

Schools from across the country were scored and separated into divisions and ranked against each other. The Pius Choir competed in the gold division, band and orchestra in silver. When the scores were tallied, each ensemble was awarded first place in their division. By winning first in the gold division, the choir earned an invitation to perform at Carnegie Hall next year.

Special recognition was paid to Leo Kim, freshman clarinetist, for outstanding instrumentalist. Additionally, Amanda Stone, senior, was recognized by Deen Entsminger, Professor of Music at Belmont University School of Music, for her work conducting a performance of the choir. Entsminger said Stone has a bright future as either a conductor or musician.

Students attended Mass at St. Patrick's Cathedral.

Riverside Church was more like a Gothic style cathedral. Competing there was insane, the acoustics were amazing. Riverside reminded me of St. Patrick?s Cathedral. It has a similar grandiose environment with vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows. Performing there was almost surreal.

In addition to the festival, there was an educational component to the trip. ?We took them on a tour of the Lincoln Center, and they got to sing in Geffen Hall. They learned about the opera program, and the national symphonic orchestra program, and we got to see all the rehearsal spaces, and how they put everything together,? said Clarissa Clark, Chorus Director.

In 4 days, the students walked nearly 30 miles and visited Radio City Music Hall, Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, Time Square, Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, Central Park, the Juilliard School, multiple halls at the Lincoln Center, and took in two Broadway shows, ?Aladdin? and ?Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.? ?We like to do an annual spring trip, but it has to have a good education component and it needs to have a spiritual component, like when we went to St. Patrick?s Cathedral to have Mass in such an amazing facility,? said Clark.

FINEARTSCONTINUED The Jazz Band traveled to Portales and received the highest marks we've gotten in Portales, great comments, a LOT of educational clinics and masterclasses on each Instrument! The Drama, Art, Dance, and Performing Arts departments will be participating in the Spring Arts Festival that brings together all of the Elementary Schools in the Diocese for a massive art show and music performance revue.

Drama is putting on one act plays and Dance is performing Spring Dance numbers for a Friday night extravaganza!

We have shows on Friday, May 2nd, at 6:30 and on Saturday, one at 2 p.m. and the other at 6:30 p.m. Please plan to come see the big show. It promises to be a great time had by all!

COLORS:APOP-UPARTINSTALLATION The pop-up art installation was inspired by the possibilities and expression of colors. It was a collaborative project between Studio Art, Printmaking, and Drawing & Painting Classes. If you missed it, you can view a photo gallery of the exhibit by clicking here. MODERNLANGUAGES- SPANISH The upper level Spanish students at SPX were in for a rare treat as they were able to attend the Museum of Albuquerque and visit the exhibition "Visions of the Hispanic World: Treasures from the Hispanic Society Museum & Library". This exhibit includes over 200 of the most exceptional works spanning over 3,000 years from the collections of the Hispanic Society of America in New York City. A significant number of these works have not been exhibited outside of the Hispanic Society, and some have never before been exhibited. The exhibition opened at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid, Spain and from there, was displayed in New York and Cincinnati before coming to Albuquerque.

In other news, SPX was highly represented at the World Language Expo at UNM. This expo offers high school students an array of cultural activities, languages, foods, festivals, and music. The Modern Language department strongly encourages for students to take a look at what the world has to offer and explore a little bit more about the world they live in.

Junior SPX student Mia Kroeter was the winner of the Haiku competition (a traditional form of Japanese poetry) which is an on-site contest and 25 minutes in length. The haiku must be written in a language other than English (in Mia?s case it was written in Spanish). It must be completely original, written during the contest time, incorporating a particular theme that will be announced at the competition. An English translation must also be provided (but the translation doesn?t have to be a haiku). ÂĄEnhorabuena, Mia! Mia Kroeter

FRENCH- IMAGINEFALLINGINLOVEWITHFRANCE? Interactive activities keep our students tuned to the French language and culture In French 1 class last month, students enjoyed talking about their family members and friends, describing their families?personality and physical traits, using their cell phones to display their favorite photos and the traditional board game Guess Who? They discussed their daily school schedules, learned to give the standard and military time in French and now look forward to practicing high French numbers by playing the French Lotto and the Price is Right. They will soon explore French education, sports and last year?s World Soccer Cup. French 2 students communicated about the culture of Senegal, discussed the chores they perform at home, sang a catchy reggae French song about keeping our cities clean and even learned about the fancy high tech public restrooms in Paris!

Soon, they will discuss French architecture and housing and present a filmed group skit between a real estate agent and customers interested in purchasing a French house. As for French 3 honors students, they are ready to hit the road since they just completed a lengthy unit on driving and now understand any instructions they?d typically hear from a driving school instructor should they take a driving test in the country of Voltaire! They are now discussing the concepts of work and volunteering, sharing facts, opinions and personal experiences while acquiring new vocabulary. Soon, they will do an oral presentation without notes in which they will teach their classmates a skill they have mastered while using the challenging tense le subjonctif. Finally, all French students will meet up during a field trip at the local French restaurant La Crèpe Michel in the spring to enjoy authentic French cuisine and practice their food vocabulary in a realistic communicative context.

Competing in the state and nationally In addition to having fun while learning French, the most driven and enthusiastic French students took the National French Contest on March 18, a highly competitive test taken by hundreds of students in the state and 80,000 students across the nation! French students at Pius have fared well with this test over the past 8 years and have consistently been state champions, as well as ranked in the top 10 nationally. Results of le Grand Concours will be published in April. On croise les doigts! - Crossing fingers.

FRENCHCONTINUED Wondering why your students should take French at SPX next year?

The reasons are plenty! In addition to learning to speak a beautiful, romantic language, French is your S.A.T connection (since about 30% of all English words are derived from French). French also opens doors to the world and amazing jobs, including in the US, in the fields of STEM, international relations, finances, diplomacy, medicine, health, film and video game production, and more. Why? Because the world speaks French. French, along with English, is a truly global language? over 200 million people in 35+ countries on every continent speak French.

French is the language spoken by the US largest trading partner, Canada. In the US alone, over 2 million French natives use French daily from New York City to Miami to Los Angeles, and some 2,400 French companies in the US employ about 650,000 Americans. Knowing some French will definitely be an asset when it is time to look for a job. Did you know that St Pius High School has an exchange program with a reputable high school in Rennes, northwestern France? Students get to practice their language skills with authentic French high schoolers and explore the French culture with peers across the Atlantic. In the fall, 22 seniors from the Chateaubriand High School visited us. They were hosted for 10 days in in awesome Pius families. Next school year, it?s our turn to head to France and visit the northwestern French high school. More information will follow. So encourage your student to sign up for French next year, they will LOVE it! We offer French I to French IV classes, including honors classes, all taught by a native French speaker.

CULINARY The Saint Pius Culinary Club was busy competing in the FCCLA (Family, Career, Community, Leaders of America) State Competition against high schools from all over New Mexico. The competition was held at the Marriott Pyramid Hotel in Albuquerque, New Mexico on March 14th -16th. The Culinary Club competed in 3 different events: Pastry Arts, Knife Skills, and Culinary Arts.

Maria Allocca, a sophomore, competed in Pastry Arts. Pastry Arts is an individual event that recognizes the individual for preparing a pastry art display, using icing and frosting to represent the theme for the current year.

This years theme was Mother?s Day. Students in this event demonstrate decision making skills, the ability to work independently, set up and maintain individual work area, utilizing time and energy-saving techniques, enforcing policies of personal hygiene, and maintain acceptable standards of personal grooming. Individuals in this event also exhibit entrepreneurial skills by designing an order form, work plan, and cost analysis. Maria won a silver medal in this event.

Isaac Silva, a senior, and Joseph Godshall, a sophomore, participated in the Knife Skills event. This event recognizes participants for their ability to work as members of a team to design and prepare an attractive, edible food tray. Participants are given 50 minutes to complete the food tray and clean up their assigned area.

Principles of sanitation are followed for the participant(s), utensils, and the work area. The participants wear food grade disposable gloves, a uniform/smock/apron chef hat or hairnet, and closed-toed, non-slip shoes. Evaluators are given time to ask questions to the participants on the following: display, setup, preparation techniques, organization & production, cost of materials, and anything related to production of the tray. Isaac and Joseph won silver in this event.

The last event the Culinary Club participated in was the Culinary Arts Event. We had 2 teams compete in this event this year! Isaac Silva, a senior, and Georgia Limbaugh, a junior, and Madeline Tungate, a sophomore, comprised our Team 1. Team 2 was made up of sophomores, Joseph Godshall, Andrew Kaplan, and Nicole Gonzales. One of the judges this year was the winner of Food Network?s Chopped. In this event the teams of participants develop a plan for the time allotted, prepare mystery menu items that are given to them at the time of the event, and present their prepared items to evaluators in 60 minutes. Participants received team scores on their personal appearance, safety and sanitation, and food production. Our culinary arts teams both won silver medals in this event. Team 2 won a renewable $1000 Scholarship to the Culinary Institute of America and scored 3rd overall.

Culinary Club was proud to represent Saint Pius and showcase their abilities during the competition.

STEM- ENGINEERING,THECOLORADOROBOTICSCHALLENGE Five years ago, St. Pius X Engineering and Math teacher Larry Sanchez received an invitation from alumna, Mary Carpenter ?13, to attend the Colorado Robotics Challenge and see her team from Trinidad College compete. ?OK, sure, I?ll get up at 3 o?clock on a Saturday morning, drive 4 hours up there, and go watch an old student of mine compete in this thing. Well, it was the best decision I ever made,? said Sanchez.

The Trinidad College team won that year, making Carpenter Sanchez?first student to win the robotics challenge, but she would not be his last. After repeated requests to the organizers of the competition, Adams State University and NASA's Colorado Space Grant Consortium, Sanchez was permitted to enter for the first time last year, as the sole high school in a field of Colorado universities and colleges.

There are only three requirements for teams invited to the challenge, but they become Mary Carpenter exponentially more difficult. The first is that robots must have motion, unguided by an operator or onboard sensors, and attempt to reach their target. The second is that robots use an onboard digital compass to autonomously reach their target. The first two requirements, if done well, are typically enough to win. The third requirement is for a robot to autonomously detect and guide its way to a beacon?s radio frequency. The third is the most challenging and can be accomplished instead of the second.

Pius?first robot entry in spring 2018 only met the first requirement, known colloquially as dumb motion. Its lack of onboard sensors for guidance led to it being aptly named Scarecrow. Even without the digital brains to meet the second requirement, it still reached its target.

Team Won Robot Anatomy

This year, the Pius engineers were determined to double their efforts and prepared to return to Colorado with two robots. Both robots were designed for the 1.5 kg division, instead of the heavier 4 kg division. The lighter division is more popular, and meant they would compete against over 20 other robots. The confidently named Team Won, along with Team Rookies, each consisted of three groups, mechanical, coding, and documentation. The students decided which groups they would contribute to based on their strengths.

The entire process from initial SolidWorks sketch to final code update took 4 months. The mechanical teams designed and revised for 10 weeks to complete their builds. The coding teams wrote in C for 12 weeks to complete their programming. Finally, the documentation team organized and submitted progress video, notes, and code to the competition organizers throughout the process. From start to finish, they worked collaboratively, and are challenged by Sanchez and the campus grounds knowing full well their final design would have to traverse the Great Sand Dunes National Park. The months of dedication paid off.

Though Team Rookies were taken out of the running by an electrical surge, Team Won?s robot nearly completed all six, progressively difficult courses. While on its way to completing the final course, a melting stream caused an abrupt end to the robotics challenge. Though, judges clearly noted the robot?s progress, because they would go on to announce Team Won as the winner of the 1.5 kg division. The team was led by Sean Goodyear, sophomore coding lead, Michael Freisinger, senior mechanical lead, and Adam Contreras, sophomore documentation lead. ?I like this the competition because one, we?re going against colleges and universities, these are the smart guys, they?re taking it seriously, their degrees are in this field, they want to make this happen. Two, it?s not a sterile environment. It?s a vicious environment. You got heat, wind, cold, water, mud, concrete terrain, talcum powder terrain. It is unbelievable, you don?t know what you are going to run into. That?s why I want to be in this competition. It pushes these kids to their limits. That?s what engineering is all about, accomplishing the impossible. That?s what these kids did and we won,? said Sanchez.

The day ended with a prayer to St. Patrick, the Patron St. of Engineers, the Virgin Mary, and to St. Pius X, ?Pray for us!?

STEM- SCIENCE The Science Symposium is upon us! April 9, 2019 marked our first ever Science Scholar Symposium, a showcase of research conducted by our upper level elective courses. The student researchers presented their findings throughout the day in the gym, with an open house in the evening from 5-7pm. Many attended our new event and saw the amazing accomplishments our Sartans achieved!

This is a great opportunity to get caught up or get ahead on your science coursework! Interested students can pick up a registration form in the Main Office or talk to their current science teacher.

The G Hour Advanced Physics comprised of seniors went to Explora on Monday, March 25. This trip was designed to help the students understand the fundamentals of everyday physics and how it affects the natural world. Students were guided through exhibits which included fluid dynamics, aerodynamics, surface tension, circuits, light, and chain reactions. Students also spent a lot of time learning about fluid dynamics by manipulating waterways and building dams. At the end of the tour, students were allowed to ride a suspended bike on a cable to understand that the weight underneath the bike will negate the rider from falling off. Overall, the trip to Explora can be summed up as an exceptional learning experience.

SOCIALSTUDIES Social Studies Department At the beginning of April, sophomores taking New Mexico History were studying the important and widespread effects that the New Deal had upon our state?s society and economy during the 1930s. As are many who study the period, the students were a bit bewildered by the dizzying array of acronym-riddled legislation that created these effects. Consequently, spirits were buoyed when they were told at the beginning of class that selected volunteers for a special game would have the opportunity to earn a few extra-credit points on their next reading quiz. A flurry of enthusiastic hands shot up to take advantage of the opportunity. Unfortunately, only contestants with hoodies could play.

Three students were instructed to use their hoodies as blindfolds and to stand at one end of the class. The rules were simple: On the count of three, each blind student could either step forward or stay still. If all stepped forward together, they were one step closer to all receiving a +3 boost on the next quiz, the prize awaiting on the other side of the classroom. However, if one or two students remained still while the others moved, those who moved would be penalized with a -1 deficit and the laggard would be awarded with a +2 reward. The game got underway. As the rest of the class observed, the players quickly figured out that the game was rigged to favor inaction. Those unfortunate optimists who stepped forward for the team faced growing deficits, and the self-interested laggards earned bigger and bigger boosts. Eventually all learned the lesson, and no one stepped forward. A student raised a hand at the back: Why can?t everyone just trust each-other so that you all move together?

And that?s a great question to begin the conversation about what the New Deal really was, about what the overall economic purpose was behind so many federally-funded spending programs, and about what FDR really meant when he told jobless Americans and risk-averse business owners that ?the only thing they had to fear was fear itself.? The simulation is an example of the Social Studies department?s commitment to giving students an opportunity to engage with history in a variety of ways. At the end of the game, most students were glad the game didn?t affect their quiz scores at all. The experience was its own reward.

THEOLOGY/CAMPUSMINISTRY- FUN,FAITH,FRIENDS- RETREATS! The 2018-2019 retreat year wrapped up with back to back powerful Senior retreats and fun filled Junior retreats. The program allowed students from every grade level to grow closer to God and each other. The retreat experience involved one day retreats for freshman and sophomores. Juniors participated in a fun filled day at Camp Oro Quay. Seniors had the opportunity to experience a faith filled mountain experience over three days and two nights. The retreats offered an opportunity for the students to grow closer together as a class and realize their personal potential and leadership abilities: Here are some thoughts and images from the students. ?This experience has been one of the best of my life.? ?The retreat made me realize all of us have the same problems, I?m not in this alone.? ?I have grown closer to God and my classmates. The retreats are amazing!?

4. Registered with NCAA and requested your transcript if you are playing college sports?

5. Applied to all schools you may attend?

6. Have you found out where you are going to live and/or have you applied for student housing?

7. Checked all scholarship opportunities?

Advanced Placement Examinations, May 2019 ? Each exam costs $94; payments are being taken in the counseling office. Checks and money orders should be made payable to St. Pius X High School. Cash and credit cards are also accepted. AP速 students must pay Mrs. Martina Ruiz in the Counseling Department for the tests.

For ALL AP速 courses, students MUST take the AP速 Examination as part of the requirement for the course.

Late testing will NOT be allowed for family vacations or commitments; these dates are national testing dates and cannot be changed. Late testing occurs only if a student is participating in a state athletic event. Late tests are $45 extra.

SAT Students planning on taking the SAT I or II (not given at St. Pius) should speak with their counselors about whether these tests are necessary or appropriate for them. College Acceptance Reply Date: May 1, 2019 Seniors are reminded that if notice is received regarding college admission before the end of April, they must respond on/before the Candidate Reply Date, which is May 1, 2019. If a student has not received a financial aid package from the college(s) where they have applied, a request for extension can be made through their counselor. Students should submit housing applications ASAP, since dormitory space is at a premium in many colleges.

CLEP Testing Many universities/colleges award credit based on the College Level Examination Program (CLEP). Time and money can be saved at the college level by taking a CLEP test in certain subjects.

Contact the university or college you will attend and find out if they accept CLEP Testing. UNM offers CLEP Exams once a month; call 277.5346 for details or visit http://test.unm.edu/clep/.

Reminder: 8th semester transcripts will be sent out after all grades (9th-12th) are in and finalized. Mailing of the final transcript usually takes place around the first week of June. All official transcripts will be mailed from St. Pius X DIRECTLY to the college requested. Please understand that college admissions office?s get very backed up in paperwork around this time of year so please be patient. It might take a week or two for them to process you student?s transcript. Mrs. Keiser will email you to let you know the exact date that she mailed your student?s transcript. If you have any questions or concerns Mrs. Keiser will be available this summer until June 30th.

YEARBOOKCONTINUED Did you know Yearbook students learn to a variety of 21st century skills while working hard to produce a yearbook and balance a budget? Skills range include photojournalism skills such as reporting, writing, photography, and editing. Life skills include communication, time management, project management, conflict resolution, team building, public speaking skills, and many others. If this project-based learning class is for your student, have them submit an application ASAP available in room 203 or at the counselor?s office. Others perks for being in this class? Students receive a complimentary yearbook and save $80 if we balance our budget, get community service hours and taking this class looks great on students?resumes for college and scholarships applications. The yearbook class also offers leadership positions such as the positions of Editor-in-Chief and Business Manager.
