Leadership Mike Deely Head of School Dear St. Pius X Community, Our most recent graduation holds a special place in our school’s history. The Class of 2026 is an amazing group of young men and women, with National Merit Scholar winners, millions earned in scholarships and financial aid, over 10% going on to play their sport in college, and a proven record of leadership, compassion, and dedication to Christ that showed in everything they did. As we celebrated the accomplishments of the Class of 2026 on Ben Rios Field, we were also saying goodbye to part of St. Pius X School’s history in preparation for the future. The backdrop of the graduation ceremony was the St. Clair building, which is scheduled to be demolished this summer. The field and bleachers where we gathered to hand out diplomas will be removed, and the construction of the new stadium will begin. At the conclusion of the ceremony, as caps were thrown and confetti was shot, I realized that all of this will change, but it is a change we are excited about and a change that is in unison with the history of the school. From the basement of St. Charles Borromeo to the Louisiana Campus, and then the move to the Westside, St. Pius X School has always adapted to change and has come out stronger in the end. The groundbreaking held just days before graduation is like the many other groundbreakings in St. Pius’s history. Whether it was the priests or sisters who first led St. Pius X or the parents and alumni who rallied together over the years, when something needed to be done, the St. Pius X community found a way. When the stadium is completed, it will be brand new, but the ground it stands on is the foundation our predecessors built. We are grateful to those who built this foundation, and we honor you as we complete this project, continuing the tradition of building a brighter future for Sartans. Sincerely in Christ,

Mike Deely, Head of School

Fr. John Trambley President of School

Dear St. Pius X Family, When something is groundbreaking, it means something new is happening. St. Pius X School has many new sports, new activities, new faces, new courses, and now, thanks to many donors, it will have a new athletic stadium. Groundbreaking is a time to reflect on how far we have come and the journey ahead. Guided by faith, we know that our true goal is not the completion of this project or another blue trophy; it is nothing short of eternity with the God who is constantly doing something new. Isaiah 43:19 says, “See, I am doing something new!” Pope Leo, in his General Audience on February 11th, 2026, reminds all believers that God is encountered in Sacred Scripture. He says, “The Word of God responds to our thirst for meaning, for the truth about our life. It is the only Word that is always new: revealing the mystery of God to us, it is inexhaustible, it never ceases to offer its riches.” Make time to read Sacred Scripture in harmony with the mind of the Church. In Dei Verbum, the Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on Divine Revelation, we read: “This should be so done that as many ministers of the divine word as possible will be able effectively to provide the nourishment of the Scriptures for the people of God, to enlighten their minds, strengthen their wills, and set men’s hearts on fire with the love of God. The sacred synod encourages the sons of the Church and Biblical scholars to continue energetically, following the mind of the Church, with the work they have so well begun, with a constant renewal of vigor.” Let us begin today to have a groundbreaking encounter with the Lord who loves us. Sincerely in Christ,

Fr. John Trambley, President of School

Vice President of Institutional Advancement Time leaves its mark on every great school.

At St. Pius X, those marks are etched in our memories from our earliest years in the basement of St. Charles of Borromeo Church, on the Louisiana campus, and now throughout every corner of our present home: in the classrooms where students discover their purpose, on the courts and fields where teammates build lifelong friendships, and in the traditions that generations of Sartans will carry with them years after graduation. These spaces have shaped lives, strengthened faith, and built a community rooted in excellence and belonging. As St. Pius X continues to evolve, so must the campus that serves our students. Buildings age. Infrastructure requires attention. The needs of today’s students look different from those of decades ago. Schools that continue to thrive are those willing to preserve what matters most while also preparing for the future. Last fall, the school launched the Boldly Moving Forward capital campaign to focus on large-scale deferred maintenance and the construction of a new athletics stadium. The campaign’s $4.5 million goal will address these two critical needs, ensuring that our students continue learning in spaces that are safe, welcoming, and prepared for the future, while also establishing resources for future facility improvements without placing additional strain on the school’s operating budget. The new stadium, meanwhile, represents something transformational for the St. Pius X community, creating a permanent home for school spirit, competition, and traditions that will unite generations of Sartans. We are celebrating this new and exciting chapter in the history of St. Pius X School and invite you to actively participate in this extraordinary moment as we invest in our future. St. Pius X Groundbreaking A New Era for Sartan Athletics St. Pius X Breaks Ground on Long-Awaited Stadium Project

On Thursday, March 14th, the spirit of St. Pius X School was on full display as students, alumni, and friends gathered for a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony at the historic Ben Rios Field. This event marked not just a construction milestone but also an all-class reunion of the entire St. Pius X Community. The ambitious 266,946 s.f. stadium, an investment of $5 million, will feature a vibrant green turf field, seating for 3,000 Sartan fans, and expanded campus parking for 180 vehicles. Long-awaited stadium lights, a dazzling digital scoreboard, a stateof-the-art press box, and welcoming concessions will transform game days into unforgettable community celebrations. Areas for long jump, high jump, and shot put, along with a broad walkway, ensure the space caters to athletes and supporters alike. More than just a venue, the new stadium is envisioned as the beating heart of St. Pius X, a place where current students, alumni, and families can gather to create lasting memories and honor the school’s proud athletic traditions. The ceremony featured remarks from Head of School Mike Deely, project architect Jeremy Alford of Molzen Corbin, student-athlete Stella Copeland ’27, and Mayor Tim Keller ’96. More than 700 students, faculty, and alumni were in attendance. “This is a long-awaited and transformative moment for St. Pius X Athletics,” said Head of School Mike Deely. “This new stadium will provide our student-athletes with a true home field for our cross country, football, rugby, soccer, and track and field teams.” “As a student-athlete, having a home stadium is incredibly meaningful,” said Stella Copeland ’27. “It gives us a place to compete, to represent our school, and to build lasting memories together.” The project is being led by general contractor HB Construction (Jason ’93 and Adam ’96 Harrington), with architectural design and engineering services provided by Molzen Corbin. Construction is expected to begin this summer, with completion anticipated in Spring 2027. The Stadium will be named the in honor of Rudy Guzman ’90 and the legacy of the entire Guzman Family. The field will remain Ben Rios Field in memory of Ben Rios, Class of 1990.

Greg Sieger ’77 Greg Sieger was born into a family of nine children, consisting of one girl and eight boys. He was raised by a dedicated homemaker and a father who served with the Federal government. His younger years were spent in Arizona before relocating to Albuquerque, where he entered St. Pius X in his sophomore year. Greg was a talented football player who was part of the 1975 Sartan State-RunnerUp team. After graduation he played football for Colorado State University on an athletic scholarship. Two of his proudest moments from college were playing on the 19th-ranked CSU football team in 1980 and graduating with a degree in Food Science and Technology with a focus on restaurant management. His dream was to open his own restaurant. After graduation, Greg started his first job as a restaurant manager at The Old Spaghetti Factory in downtown Denver. After working for about a year, he determined that was not what he wanted for his life and transitioned into wholesale food sales for Shamrock Foods, selling to restaurants, hotels, and institutions. Two years later, he started his real dream job with Miller Brewing Company as a Regional Young Adult Coordinator, working with local colleges promoting sales, alcohol education, and responsible consumption. He was finally getting paid to do what he enjoyed in college: meeting great people, traveling, and celebrating. Over the next 14 years, Greg moved 7 times while working for Miller Brewing and lived in Colorado, Montana, Hawaii, California, and Washington State. After a Reduction in Force or R.I.F., Greg returned to his original calling. He opened his own fully approved commercial bakery in his basement, selling to restaurants, stores, and the local farmers’ market. “Sales took off, and had I been a younger man, I would have opened a retail shop, but 2 years into it, I needed to get an actual retail shop or move on. I received an offer from my former employer and went back to work for SAB Miller, working with distributors selling beer. Miller Brewing Company sold and changed its name to SABMiller, and away we went.” In 2016, he settled back in Missoula, Montana, where he remained for 22 additional years. On December 31, 2025, after 36 total years of selling alcohol and loving it, Greg retired and is focusing on his health and family. Just before his official retirement, he attended the 50th Reunion of the SPX 1975 football team, which included a gathering on Alumni Plaza, a tailgate, and a Sartan football game. “The future holds so many opportunities, and I plan to spend my newfound time off (six Saturdays and one Sunday every week) with my wife and daughter’s family, and two grandchildren.” - Greg Sieger ’77

Robbie C’de Baca ‘02 After graduating from St. Pius X in 2002, Robbie C’de Baca kept his soccer dream alive. He played college soccer at the University of Maryland, where he won a national championship in 2005. He later graduated from Trinity University with degrees in Spanish and Business. Robbie continued doing what he loved most, playing professionally for a brief stint in Mexico with Monterrey Rayados and in the U.S. with FC Dallas. Once his playing days were behind him and his body signaled it was time, Robbie made the jump into the tech world. He’s spent the last 15 years in that space and is currently the VP of Business Development at Real Time Solutions in Albuquerque. His day-today involves working with New Mexico state agencies, government organizations, and private companies across the country to build large, custom web applications. Robbie met his beautiful wife, Alison “Ali”, in 2009. They lived in Seattle from 2010 to 2015 and have been back in Albuquerque ever since. Ali is an licensed family therapist and, not coincidentally, a very patient person to put up with a house full of boys. Their pride and joy are their two boys, Grady (11), who will be a 6th grader at St. Pius X next year, and Quinn (8). When they’re not working, Robbie and Ali spend most of their time as full-time chauffeurs to youth soccer games, and Robbie continues to play in the Annual Alumni Games every fall. In the rare moments when not consumed by soccer commitments, Robbie and the boys love getting out on the golf course or hitting the slopes.

Scott Keller ‘90 In 1988, Scott Keller was a starter on St. Pius’s first State Champion soccer team. He celebrated this victory with his teammate, best friend, and bandmate, Ben Rios. Sadly, less than a year later, Ben tragically passed away. In his honor, the St. Pius X athletic field carries Ben’s name. Today, the same drum set that Ben pounded on back in the 80’s is played by Scott’s bandmate and son, Lachlan (25). The rest of Scott’s band comprises his sons, Camden (19) on rhythm guitar and Jackson (23) on bass and vocals. The band was featured in the 2021 documentary, “Rock Camp: The Movie”, which shone a light on the hard-won miracle Jackson, who was born with profound, diffuse, bilateral brain damage. The family has been blessed to share the stage with many of Scott’s musical heroes including Alice Cooper, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Deep Purple, Megadeth, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, and many others. Bringing up Jackson has been both the most challenging and rewarding experience of Scott’s life. Not wanting to lose touch with his other two sons, Scott committed to traveling with them frequently, often to countries none of them had visited before. These shared adventures led Scott to become the 78th person in history (according to nomadmania.com) to be verified as having visited every country in the world in 2019. Along the way, Lachlan became the first U.S. minor to visit North Korea as a tourist since 1950, Jackson was the first disabled child to explore Antarctica, and Camden visited all seven continents by age seven. During one of his early travels to Cambodia in 2001, Scott and some friends were so moved by their experience that they started a non-profit social enterprise to help underserved youth through a work-study model that provides IT services. The now multiaward-winning company, Digital Divide Data (DDD), has positively impacted over 75,000 lives and was featured in Thomas Friedman’s NY Times best-selling book, The World is Flat, as the first example of socially responsible outsourcing. In Scott’s words, he isn’t talented enough to make his living off playing guitar, so outside of music he’s a Senior Partner at McKinsey & Company and a New York Times bestselling author of multiple books on leadership, including his two latest: CEO Excellence: The Six Mindsets That Distinguish the Best Leaders from the Rest, and A CEO for All Seasons: Mastering the Cycles of Leadership. As a result of his bookwriting and consulting, Fortune Magazine has named him one of the world’s foremost “CEO Whisperers”. He’s also a lecturer and keynote speaker in venues ranging from Harvard Business School to the World Economic Forum. Scott’s favorite place is Seal Beach, California, where he settled after stints in Melbourne, Australia (where his wife, Fiona, is from), Cleveland, Ohio, and South Bend, Indiana (where he received degrees in Mechanical Engineering and his MBA from the University of Notre Dame). Back home in Albuquerque, he’s best known as the older brother of fellow St. Pius X alum and the three-term mayor of Albuquerque, Tim Keller ‘96 (who also happens to be a former President of Digital Divide Data!).

Sartan Journeys

Dr. Tony ‘04 and Dr. Marisa ‘04 Martinez Roddy Dr. Tony and Dr. Marisa Roddy are proud alumni of St. Pius X, graduating in 2004. They are now Physical Therapists and coowners of La Luz Therapy, an outpatient clinic specializing in orthopedic and pediatric care. Their practice is conveniently located just a short drive from the steps of the SPX campus, where they fell in love during their sophomore year of high school. The couple’s drive and passion for sports and medicine brought them together. Tony was a standout, 3-sport varsity athlete, starting as a running back on the Sartan football team, while Marisa showcased her talents in basketball and earned all-state honors in softball. They are both UNM Lobos who graduated with honors, Summa Cum Laude (the top 1%) in 2009. In 2012, they both received their doctoral degrees from the UNM Physical Therapy Program. Their professional journeys included working at various local clinics, but their passion led them to establish their own clinic on Albuquerque’s west side, near SPX. They envisioned offering personalized care, a rarity in their field, and launched their practice in 2017, witnessing continued growth. The couple is blessed with three wonderful children: Isabel Roddy, a 2022 SPX graduate, Lucas Roddy, a sixth grader at SPX, and Logan Roddy, a fourth grader poised to become a future Sartan. They reside in the Oxbow community, within walking distance of the school. Tony humorously shares that one of his aspirations is to age gracefully while attending Sartan sporting events with his future grandchildren.

This year’s team was the first ever with an all-female roster, consisting of seniors Miranda Barela, Kathryn Egberg, and Mellery Apodaca, along with sophomores Marisa Sapien, Emily Aragon, Nashay Baca, and Celia Horton. Based on State score and school size, St. Pius X was placed in Division V at the National competition. Talent is fostered on the stage, behind the scenes, and during the many hours of practice in the classroom. The St. Pius X Fine Arts students log countless hours throughout the year, perfecting their passions. Whether it be a brushstroke or a smudge of charcoal, a musical note, or a journey to another land or time, our Sartan artists set the stage for excellence in all areas.

Congratulations to all our high school and middle school members of the orchestra, band, and choir for their outstanding performances in the Spring Concert!

Around the X: Campus Ministry

Christ in the Community is a ministry centered on prayer, worship, and encounter with the living presence of Christ. The movement began in the inspired heart and mind of Fr. Graham R. Golden ’04 (deceased). Fr. Graham often reminded those around him, “We become what we receive so we can live what we believe.” These words beautifully capture the spirit that continues to guide this growing ministry. Christ in the Community was born from a simple but profound desire: to create a space where people could gather before the Lord, truly present in the Eucharist, and experience the joy of prayer together. Through music, reflection, and Eucharistic Adoration, the gathering invites people of all ages into a living dialogue with God while fostering genuine communion with one another. The vision first took shape within the prayerful walls of Santa Maria de la Vid Abbey, where Fr. Graham and others longed to offer a place where hearts could rest in the presence of Christ. What began as a small movement of prayer has continued to grow, gently inviting people throughout the city to step away from the busyness of life and spend time with the Lord. This year, Christ in the Community partnered with St. Pius X School to bring a dynamic “paraliturgy” to the school and the surrounding faith community. In this gathering, the beauty of communal worship meets the stillness of Adoration, allowing participants to encounter Christ both personally and together as one body. The High School Christian Leadership students of St. Pius X played an important role in planning and serving the greater community by inviting and welcoming guests to our beautiful campus to gather in this sacred space. Through their leadership and hospitality, students had the opportunity to extend their hearts in faith by supporting this beautiful ministry. In doing so, they continued to grow in their role within the Church as disciples, joyfully welcoming others to Christ with open arms. Two events were held in our chapel. Kicking off the new year in February, the community gathered for an evening of praise and prayer. Again, in March, during the heart of the Lenten season, the community gathered to encounter the merciful and forgiving embrace of Christ through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. What began as a vision within the walls of Santa Maria de la Vid Abbey continues to grow and move throughout our city as a gentle invitation, beckoning all to step away from the noise of life and rest with the Lord for an hour.

Around the X: Campus Ministry

Sophomore Retreat On April 28, St. Pius X School came alive as 156 sophomores took part in the annual Sophomore Retreat, held right here on campus. The entire day was designed and led by our junior and senior Christian Leadership class as their capstone project, bringing a month of planning, prayer, and creativity to life. Inspired by the meaning of the word sophomore: “wise fool,” the day began with high energy, “foolish” games that sparked laughter, connection, and a sense of openness. That energy quickly gave way to a deeper invitation: what does it mean to be truly wise? Rooted in Matthew 7:24–27, students were challenged to reflect on the foundation upon which they are building their lives. Through student-led talks, small group conversations, and personal reflection, the Christian Leadership students created space for honest growth and authentic encounter. At its center was the celebration of the Mass, grounding the day in Christ as our firm foundation. The retreat closed with praise, prayer, and an invitation for each student to commit to habits that lead to lasting wisdom. More than just a day away from the classroom, it was a powerful experience of faith, leadership, and community, one that will continue to shape the lives of our students long after it ended.

Season Stats Overall Record: 13-15 District Record: 4-4 State Results: #12 Seed

The Girls Varsity Basketball team had a great season with a very young squad. Heading into the state tournament as the twelfth seed, they were optimistic. Unfortunately, they lost to a more experienced Valencia team by 3 points in the 1st round, ending their run earlier than they hoped. Looking ahead, the Lady Sartans are excited to continue building the program. With only one senior, Mikaela Trujillo, graduating, the team is retaining most of its core players. The players and coaching staff are committed to working hard this summer and in the pre-season, returning even stronger next year.

St. Pius X Boys & Girls Wrestling Recap

The 2025 season was a breakthrough year for Saint Pius X Wrestling, under the direction of retired UFC Fighter, Coach Dan “The Determined” Argueta. The Sartans finished just 3.5 points shy of a State Team Trophy while producing two State Champions, three State Finalists, and eight State Placers, with a school recordbreaking five wrestlers competing in the state championship finals. More important than the medals earned was the culture built inside the room. Preseason training began in the spring of 2024, with the athletes choosing growth over comfort, discipline over excuses, and brotherhood over individuality. The 2025/2026 season is just the beginning and has laid the foundation for what’s ahead.

St. Pius X Boys & Girls Swimming Recap

2026 was another stellar year for St. Pius X Swimming! Although this year’s team was a bit smaller and younger, with only 2 seniors representing St. Pius X, this may have been the most close-knit team in memory. The swimmers performed well above expectations! The Sartan were led by Senior Audrey Phelps, district champion in the 500 Free, runner-up in the 100 Breast, and Dani Madrid, who took second at district in both the 100 Fly and the 100 Free. At the NMAA State Championships, St. Pius X Girls finished 8th overall with 2 relays that were just shy of the St. Pius X all-time records! Our young boys’ team had a great showing as well, led by Junior Griffin Wells, who made finals in the 500 Free. Our Boys Freestyle Relays also advanced to finals with a strong showing.

St. Pius X Sports Medicine Recap

Sports Medicine Brings Home the Blue, AGAIN! For Sports Medicine, this school year was defined as a successful continuation and refinement of a strong foundation established the year prior. With two full-time Athletic Trainers, Ashley Padilla and Kylee Dorsey, sharing coverage of both middle and high school athletics, the program maintained a high standard of care while building consistency across all teams. This structure ensured that student-athletes remained well-supported, healthy, and prepared to compete at their highest level. Facility upgrades and expanded rehabilitation resources continued to enhance efficiency and allowed for the delivery of high-quality, comprehensive care. Athletically, St. Pius X experienced another standout year. Volleyball, football, and boys’ soccer advanced to their respective state finals, reinforcing the school’s competitive excellence. The boys’ cross country added to that success with an impressive 3rd-place finish at the state meet. The Sports Medicine program also sustained and expanded its involvement with middle school athletics, reinforcing continuity within the program and providing valuable early exposure for younger student-athletes. This ongoing integration supports long-term development and strengthens the overall pipeline of care.

ACADEMIC ALL-STATE 1st Team 2nd Team Marcos Chavez (12)

In the classroom, the Sports Medicine students rose to the challenge of defending their title at the NMAA State Athletic Training Challenge. With significant changes to the competition format this year, the team was required to quickly adapt and pivot their preparation strategies. Facing the pressure and motivation of returning as defending champions, the students embraced the challenge and once again delivered an outstanding performance. The program earned 1st place overall, with two Sartan teams placing 1st and 2nd, and a team average score of 224 out of 300. Individually, seniors James Martinez and Marcos Chavez secured 1st and 2nd place finishes. These achievements reflect the resilience, adaptability, and dedication of the students, as well as the continued strength of the program’s curriculum and instruction. Building on last year’s success while meeting new challenges head-on, the Sports Medicine program once again brought home the state trophy, proving that excellence is not just achieved, but sustained.

St. Pius X Powerlifting Recap

The St. Pius X Powerlifting Team completed its second season with an incredible finish. What began as a new opportunity has quickly grown into something special, as athletes continue to build on the foundation laid in our inaugural year. Once again, the team saw tremendous growth, finishing with 12 state qualifiers on both the girls’ and boys’ teams. These student-athletes have continued to develop not only their physical strength in the weight room but also their confidence and understanding of the sport. More importantly, they represented our program with heart, perseverance, and discipline every step of the way. Sartan Athletics is so proud of how far this program has come in just two seasons and is excited for what’s ahead for Sartan Powerlifting.

The 2026 St. Pius X Baseball season kicked off with one of the toughest schedules in 4A baseball. The Sartans finished second in the Andres Arguello tournament with a tough loss to a talented La Cueva Bears team. The boys finished the district schedule with a 5-3 record and a second place finish in the district. The state tournament began with a best-of-three series on the road against the Grants Pirates. It was a tough three-game series, but the Sartans came out on top in the first two games. In the quarterfinals, the Sartans matched up with the number one seed Artesia Bulldogs, and in a very rough battle, the Bulldogs came out on top 3-2.

The 2026 season was a statement year for the St. Pius X Lady Sartans. After a young team gained valuable experience the season before, this group returned hungry, focused, and determined to leave their mark on New Mexico softball. They battled through one of the toughest schedules in the state and earned the #4 seed in the NMAA State Softball Championships. Their postseason run carried them to the Elite 8, where they ultimately fell short to Goddard. Offensively, the Sartans were explosive. District Player of the Year Zoë Mangrum (12) had a phenomenal season at the plate, blasting 15 home runs and consistently delivering in big moments. Jaelyn Olloway (9) added tremendous power as well with seven home runs of her own, helping lead one of the most dangerous offensive lineups in the state. Inside the circle, District Pitcher of the Year Lexi Jaramillo (8) and Dominique Morett (11) anchored the pitching staff with poise, toughness, and consistency throughout the season. Together, they gave the Sartans a competitive edge every time they stepped onto the field. What made this team truly special went far beyond wins and statistics. They built a culture rooted in accountability, resilience, toughness, and family. From big-time moments to everyday practices, this team continued to raise the standard of St. Pius X Softball.

St. Pius X Tennis Recap

Boys Season Stats Overall Record: 10-5 District Record: 4-2

The Boys’ Tennis Team finished the season with a solid record and qualified for the state tournament. The Sartans reached the quarterfinals after a first-round team victory over Chaparral from Southern New Mexico. Individual and doubles successes included Jude Benavides (11) and John Johnson (9), who were the doubles District Champions. Mateo Certain (12) was the state runner-up in singles and placed second in the district competition. The program is already preparing for next year’s success, with five returning players and 8th- and 9th-grade players coming out for the team.

The Girls Varsity Tennis program finished the regular season strong, led by one of the youngest teams in recent years. With no seniors on the roster and four eighth graders contributing throughout the season, the Sartans dominated during district play, narrowly falling to Grants in a final district team match. Despite the setback, the team continued to gain momentum heading into postseason competition.

Girls Season Stats Overall Record: 12-3 District Record: 5-4

At the Metro Tournament, the Sartans showcased their depth and competitiveness by defeating two 5A programs before advancing to the semifinals against perennial powerhouse Albuquerque Academy. Individually, junior Madison Sanchez delivered one of the highlights of the season by capturing the District Singles Championship with an exciting victory over her Grants opponent. The team carried that momentum into the state tournament, earning impressive wins over Goddard and familiar district rival Grants to advance to the state semifinals for the first time in a decade. Their postseason run ultimately came to an end against the eventual state champion Albuquerque Academy. With every varsity player eligible to return next season, the experience gained this year has positioned the Sartans for continued success.

This was a rebuilding year, considering the Sartans lost eight players to graduation and attrition. The team included only one senior, two juniors, and five freshmen. The goal for next season is to develop solid default golf swings for returning players and to focus on sound course strategy to save strokes.

The St. Pius X Ruggers concluded the 2026 season on May 9th while hosting the Rugby New Mexico State Tournament at Ben Rios Field. Placing in every category, SPX Rugby recorded its most successful season across all levels of rugby (High School/Middle School) since 2011. The Sartans fielded their strongest roster in over a decade, elevating the program’s skill level and enabling competitive 15s play within the state and nationally. While competing in the Rugby New Mexico Spring competition season, U19 and U16 SPX Ruggers consistently refined and built on their performance each week, concluding in the season’s finest match, a sound defeat of the Rio Rancho Rugby Club at the State Tournament. Simultaneously, our newest program level, U14, competed in the state finals and fought to the very last moment, placing 2nd. All three levels of SPX Rugby placed at the State Tournament this season, an exciting position to be in with a younger team that has years of continuity ahead of it. Early in the season, Rugby New Mexico organized a test match against Rugby Colorado in March and held Select Team trials to choose the best players across the state to represent New Mexico. Eight SPX Rugby players were selected to represent New Mexico Rugby in its defeat of powerhouse Colorado Rugby.

The boys’ team also had another great season, maintaining a three-year streak of second-place finishes in the NMHSWPL State Championships. With a strong senior class next year and junior Griffin Wells being one of the top polo players in the state, the boys’ water polo team looks to be even more competitive next year. Middle School A Spring Season of Faith, Leadership, and Celebration This spring was filled with faith, leadership, creativity, and community in our SPX middle school. As we closed out another successful school year, our students participated in a variety of events and experiences that highlighted both their academic accomplishments and their growth as young people rooted in faith and service. One of the highlights of the semester was the Middle School Spring Play, The Odyssey. Under the direction of our middle school drama program, students brought this classic story to life through an engaging and entertaining performance. The production showcased the incredible talents, confidence, and dedication of our student performers and crew members, and we are grateful to the teachers and families who supported the production. This spring, we also celebrated leadership transitions within the middle school community. During the 7th to 8th Grade Moving Up Ceremony, current 7th graders officially stepped into their role as the future leaders of the middle school. Students reflected on the responsibility and opportunity that comes with becoming the oldest students in the division and were encouraged to lead by example through faith, character, and service. Our 8th Grade Awards Ceremony was another meaningful celebration of student achievement. Students were recognized for First and Second Honors academic achievement, as well as excellence in athletics, activities, character, and individual subject areas. Faculty members honored students who demonstrated dedication, perseverance, integrity, and a commitment to the mission of St. Pius X School both inside and outside the classroom. We were proud to celebrate 121 students at this year’s 8th Grade Promotion Mass. Surrounded by family, friends, faculty, and staff, students marked the completion of their middle school journey and looked ahead to the opportunities awaiting them in our high school. The celebration reflected not only academic accomplishment, but also the spiritual formation and community that define the St. Pius X experience. Throughout the year, our Middle School Counseling program continued to support students academically, socially, and emotionally. This spring, 8th graders participated in career readiness activities and Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons designed to help prepare them for their future. Lessons focused on goal setting, communication skills, organization, self-awareness, and future planning as students continue discovering their gifts and interests. Our 8th graders also participated in the 8th Grade Transition Panel. Graduating seniors shared advice, experiences, and encouragement as the Class of 2030 prepares to begin high school next year. Students asked thoughtful questions and gained valuable insight into academics, activities, time management, and personal growth. School spirit remained strong all semester, thanks in large part to the efforts of our Middle School Christian Leadership team. Students organized and hosted a fun and energetic Middle School Pep Rally that brought students together through games, friendly competition, and community-building activities. Christian Leadership students also hosted the Middle School Spring Dance, which was exceptionally well attended and filled with music, laughter, and memorable moments. As we reflect on this spring semester, we are grateful for the many opportunities our students had to grow academically, spiritually, socially, and personally. We thank our teachers, families, staff, and students for helping make this year such a special one, and we look forward with excitement and hope to all that next year will bring.

Middle School

A Winning Year for SPX Middle School Athletics What a year for SPX Middle School Sports! Our students showed up and showed out. Our programs were even bigger than last year, with more than 80% students participating across all sports and many students participating in multiple seasons. This year we were able to offer two flag football teams, one rugby team, one softball team, one baseball team, one coed track team, five boys basketball teams, four girls basketball teams, one coed wrestling team, one coed swim team, four coed soccer teams, six volleyball teams, one coed cross country team, one coed golf team, one coed tennis team, and a Razzle Dazzle cheer team. As an athletic program, we achieved huge success both on and off the field. Our students practiced great sportsmanship, built lasting friendships, and demonstrated what it means to be a Sartan. We are so proud of the work they put in and the skills built. We are also incredibly grateful to all the coaches and families who supported our athletes throughout the year. As we look to the future, we are excited to continue growing and offering even more sports and opportunities for our middle school teams.

Way to go Sartans!
