NIRVANA In - Situ Slum Redevelopment The recently launched “Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Housing for All (Urban)” in India proposes a four pronged strategy to achieve the objective of housing for all. One of the major components of the Mission is “In-situ slum redevelopment using land as resource”. This approach aims to ‘leverage the locked potential of land under slums to provide houses to the eligible slum dwellers bringing them into the formal urban settlement which is the need of the hour to address the complex challenge of housing.

LAYOUT EVOLUTION “STREET LED SLUM UPGRADATION”

The layout pattern follows the concept of ‘street led slum upgradation’-where streets facilitates interaction

1

The conventional grid technique for the street layout failed to address the issue of crossventilation.

3

2

Staggered arrangment preffered as it provided better ventilation.

The dwelling units were arranged so as to align with the streets and provide mutual shading to the streets.

4

Shape grammar of rotation is used to create social spaces.

The Museum of Language ARCHASM DESIGN COMPETITION ( TEAM OF 3) LOCATION - LONDON ROLE - DESIGN IDEAS CONCEPTUAL DRAWINGS PRESENTATION

CONCEPT People of all languages have some sort of games as part of their culture. Since it often takes conscious effort for people to speak or read their native language if it is almost defunct, it stands to reason that making this process as attractive as possible can enhance serious attempts at language preservation. This is obviously a great approach for teaching languages to individuals. Scrabble is played universally and can be translated into any local language across cultures. Moreover, Scrabble, unlike other word games, can only be played in a community, which is of utmost importance in maintaining a struggling language.

The phonetics of the language is portrayed in the rhythm of the space

Pocket spaces serves as social and leisure spaces

Intersection of the language spaces forms learning centre Tiles are laid to form words in scrabble, likewise, in ‘Trails’ - tiles form spaces for languages and the pocket spaces are used as recreational spaces. In scrabble, the alphabets which are rarely used have the highest value, similarly, here the endangered languages have been given the highest value. Instead of Imposing, ‘Trails’ leads to a space where the people are free to contemplate and evolve the future language.

A plaza, where people interact and arrive at their own conclusion about the future of languages

FEATURES

DESIGN EVOLUTION

Curved shell structure provided more shaded region, which created space for outdoor dining, kids recreation and interaction space

Main aim was to bring all requirements under one roof and thus providing physical connectivity between spaces.

Openings provided in roof brings diffused light inside and takes hot air outside

All spaces are easily accessible and visually connected with exterior spaces.

Increased ceiling height decresed room temperature and maintains air quality

Incorporating shell structure provided more shaded region and reduced interior temperature with increase in ceiling height

DESCRIPTION

DESIGN FEATURES

The project was to design a residence in Srirangam for a family of six. The site was 25m*60m with the main road abutting the site on the north side and the river view on the south side. The site had a raised countour towards the north direction.

The concept behind this design was to utilize the site factors to the maximum.

ZONING

Bedrooms are placed accordingly to accept North sun and have proper view towards river.

Swimming pool is extended to the boundary to create infinity pool

The zoning is done in such a way that there is clear segregation between spaces and its privacy factor.

Living spaces with increased ceiling height to improve lighting and air quality of the space.

Effective use of sky-light to bring natural light to different levels

The site was contoured and no leveling was done , the contour was used to increase the privacy for the private spaces.

Semi-Outdoor spaces like decks and balconies are provided to experience nature and view from the space. Louvre windows are provided to enhance the wind speed in the residence.
