Over the past year, SARC Members have shown incredible resilience while providing exceptional personcentred services.

CONNECTING IN THE TIME OF COVID We at BTEC have been extremely fortunate to get a grant from the Battlefords United Way to supply our participants with iPads. It is extremely important for our participants to learn about social distancing so that they are safe, not only at work but also out in the world.

Several years ago, SaskTel gave our partcipants classes on how to use iPads. At the conclusion of these classes, each person that participated received their own iPad and out of our 62 participants, there were about 12 fortunate enough to take this class. It got us thinking — what if we set up iPads so that with just a touch of a button people could see each other at home or at work?

Because we had to limit the number of people we can have in our building at one time, and we have some participants who have not physically returned to the building, we have compromised by having some people come in the morning and others in the afternoon. With a break in between these two groups, staff are able to sanitize the space and devices. Our participants are

also divided into pods where they are social distanced from each other but because they are now supplied with iPads, they can talk to each other whether they are in the next pod or at home.

Another important thing is to have fun! Our staff have been awesome at finding programs to play games with, using different filters and setting up parties so that everyone can get together at once.

It is so important for us and our participants to stay connected in this crazy time, and every idea that we can come up with to keep connected is something that we will always consider.

CANADIAN TIRE SWIFT CURRENT

LEADING THE WAY IN INCLUSIVE EMPLOYMENT Generations are familiar with Canadian Tire’s longstanding commitment to customer service. But what customers of Canadian Tire in Swift Current (SC) may not realize is that by shopping at the local franchise they are also supporting inclusive employment hard at work.

Canadian Tire - SC often works with the Partners in Employment branch of SaskAbilities to enhance the franchise’s workforce by hiring individuals who experience disability. “There have been very few issues we’ve ever had with Partners’ candidates [for jobs],” commented Tyler Lemieux, General Manager of Canadian Tire Swift Current.

“The retention through them is probably better than our normal retention rate!”

Lemieux’s observation is mirrored in studies from accessibleemployers.ca, which identifies an average retention rate of 72% among persons with disabilities.

At the beginning of the summer, Cody Lynne Lingenfelter (top right), a Partners in Employment job-seeker, landed a position in the Garden Centre.

Cody Lynne says it “feels really good” to be able to put her uniform on each day she goes to work. “I am loving it at Canadian Tire! It is an awesome job.

My responsibilities there are watering the plants at the Garden Centre. I get to work outside - Missy

[McIntosh, her supervisor] is really awesome. I like that we can joke around at work and I get my job done at the same time.”

Missy McIntosh manages the Garden Centre and she is equally pleased with the work that Cody Lynne does.

“With Cody Lynne, she’s good - she’s got her routine, she knows what she is doing, primarily watering. Cody Lynne has a really good knowledge of where stuff is.

That’s one of her customer service skills.”

Lemieux has several Partners in Employment jobseekers on his Canadian Tire staff who have been instrumental in keeping up with the many changes that have been implemented during the pandemic.

With successful employees like Cody Lynne, Lemieux has no trouble seeing the value in working with Partners in Employment in the future.

“It’s a great resource and I don’t think it matters what industry you’re in,” Lemieux said. “[Partners in Employment] will help you find the candidates that will help and in southwest Saskatchewan, it’s not always the easiest thing, hiring, on-boarding, and retention, and the success we’ve had, that can be duplicated across any business or industry so I’d definitely reach out and see what Partners has available.”

Thanks to Cody Lynne’s success in finding employment during the COVID-19 pandemic, staff at SaskAbilities Swift Current asked Cody Lynne to speak at a virtual City Council meeting for the City’s proclamation of Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) Week in October. This is an added local initiative in support of the Province’s monthlong proclamation, honouring inclusive employment.

Cody Lynne spoke at length about her experience and encouraged others to seek help from Partners in Employment to help others reach their employment goals.

SASKATCHEWAN BUSINESSES GET INTO DEAM

The month of October 2020 was again proclaimed by the Province of Saskatchewan as Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM). In the last year, all of us experienced adversity, and for many that included the state of the economy and employment. Celebrating triumph through adversity keeps us all going; DEAM was one of those triumphant moments for us in 2020.

There were numerous events that took place across Saskatchewan in celebration of DEAM: On October 1, we kicked off the month with SARC’s Executive Director, Amy McNeil, being interviewed on CTV Morning Live in both Saskatoon and Regina. SARC partnered with SaskTel and Juliana Pizza to air commercials on CTV, CBC, City TV, and Sportsnet throughout October. The theme with these commercials was once again, It Pays to Be Inclusive.

SARC hosted a virtual Lunch and Learn featuring internationally recognized inclusive employer, Mark Wafer, who spoke about the business case for inclusive employment. Mark was joined by three Saskatchewan employers, from Farm Credit Canada, Humboldt Sobeys, and Weyburn Rona, to speak about their personal experiences and how hiring people experiencing disability makes good business sense as well as the positive impact they see in their businesses.

Across the province, community-based organizations hosted events to celebrate DEAM and the inclusive employers in their communities, including: •

Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop presented inclusive employers with Certificates of Recognition and spotlighted them on their social media (below).

•

Crocus Cooperative’s employment program held a soup sale. This program offers paid employment to

people experiencing disability and this soup sale broadened the program’s exposure and provided additional hours of paid employment (above).

•

A number of organizations chose to do social media blitzes and contests, including Eagle’s Nest Youth Ranch, Munch Café and Catering, North Saskatchewan Independent Living Centre, and SaskAbilities in Swift Current.

•

The city of Swift Current officially proclaimed DEAM during their virtual council meeting where SaskAbilities and a supported employee shared the story of the journey to employment with Canadian Tire during the pandemic (see article on opposite page).

•

October 7th was proclaimed nationally as MentorAbility Day. One example of a MentorAbiltiy Day experience was at Bumper to Bumper in Swift Current, where a job seeker had opportunity to spend time learning about this retail operation and see if it suited his job preferences.

•

Partners in Employment hosted a virtual Hire for Talent Inclusion Workshop, facilitated by Sean McEwen of Realeyes Capacity Consultants of Calgary, Alberta.

These are just a few examples of the events that happened throughout Saskatchewan during the month of October. This year, organizations needed to be a little more creative when it came to promoting DEAM while also maintaining physical distance.

They all did a great job celebrating both hiring people experiencing disability and the champion inclusive employers. We challenge everyone to start thinking about DEAM for October 2021 and planning to celebrate those employers who hire people experiencing disability. BLENDS LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES IN A NEW TRAINING YEAR In-Person Training Returns with Enhanced Safety Measures Since the last update, in-person training is back!

We are happy to once again see all of your faces and provide you with quality education and training opportunities. “Great to see a visual of how to make it work during COVID.” We have held a variety of sessions since September, and are now planning for 2021 training. We’ve been busy with the following training programs.

Leap The Leap program started in October with a group of Learners gathering together to learn management skills from our knowledgeable Leap facilitators as well as

each other. New to the team this year is Desiree Tirk, Trainer/Resource Developer (Leadership) with SARC. Desiree will facilitate How Managers Communicate and Lead, and Governance which are two of the nine sessions in the full Leap program.

Person-Centred Essentials Person-centred Essentials sessions were hosted in November, with additional sessions scheduled for January 2021. This COMPASS-funded program was updated throughout the summer of 2020 and is now being facilitated by SARC’s Trainer/Resource Developer (Service Delivery), Lori Morphy. A big thank you to a few SARC Members who provided footage to be used in the training – Multiworks Corporation, Farm in the Dell, Christian Horizons, Redvers Activity Centre, as well as the former facilitators, Lori and Lacey.

PART and TLR Train-the-Trainer Do you have employees in a supervisory position that your organization wants to train as a PART or TLR Trainer? SARC offers both PART and TLR Train-theTrainer which enables employees to train the PART and TLR programs to employees at your organization.

Numerous sessions have already been held, with more dates added for both Train-the-Trainer and Recertification sessions being hosted in 2021.

Online Training Programs – Take Training When and Where You Want We are happy to announce the launch of Venture – The Supervisor’s Skill Path.

This online training program is for new supervisors, or supervisors wanting to enhance their skills.

Venture has six modules of interactive content designed to help build the skills, knowledge, and confidence needed for a successful career as a supervisor in the nonprofit sector. A big thank you to Autism Services, Moose Jaw Diversified Services, Clare Parker Homes, Cosmopolitan Industries, and Futuristic Industries for sending footage for us to use in the Venture program.

ELEVATE – Best Practices for Board Leadership ELEVATE is an online program for Board Directors of nonprofit organizations who want to learn more about the role of the Board, governance, and other topics that are important in the nonprofit sector today. A very responsive and flexible online program, Directors can take the program as a group with the rest of the Board, or complete it individually at their own pace, discussing the key concepts at the next Board meeting.

Saskatchewan Polytechnic Bursary Program Are you interested in continuing your education?

The Saskatchewan Polytechnic Bursary Program, administered by SARC, provides employees at SARC Member Agencies the financial assistance to access additional training in the disability service sector.

Bursaries help employees working at a SARC Member Agency to take courses in the Disability Support Worker Certificate Program (DSW) through Saskatchewan Polytechnic. This additional education may assist employees to achieve greater success in a career at a SARC Member Agency and in the disability service sector.

SARC bursaries cover the entire cost of course tuition; however, books, print materials, and application fees for courses are the responsibility of the employee.

And remember: graduates of SARC’s Stride program earn 10 credits in the DSW program, so they are already well on their way to earning that certificate.

INTERLAKE REMEMBERS

This November, participants from Interlake Human Resources were featured in The Watrous Manitou paper for their creative—and sneaky—way to connect with the community during Remembrance Day. We had four of our participants helping to paint rocks, whether it be the base colours or the actual decorative painting on top of them. These same ladies were part of the crew who placed the rocks around Watrous and Manitou Beach. Our whole idea was to be anonymous with the project so there were lots of laughs and giggles while we tried to be stealthy and sneaky when leaving the rocks at various places. We drove around and each lady took turns hopping out and hurrying to place the rocks before anyone saw them.

Last year (our first year doing this project), we started to notice posts on social media mentioning the rocks around town, saying what a nice idea it was and wondering who was responsible. The participants

loved hearing that people enjoyed their work and it was fun to see that our sneakiness had worked and people couldn’t figure out where they came from!

This year we happened upon a warm weather day to walk and take the rocks around, and we very well may have been spotted or a little bird somehow got the word out to Daniel Bushman at The Watrous Manitou, but he called and asked if he could do an article on our project. Well, as fun as it was to have been anonymous, our ladies were absolutely tickled that their efforts and rocks were being recognized and praised in the local paper! They were proud of the work they had done and the message behind it. We were especially proud to have a local Legion member see our rocks on display before we went to place them around.

All in all, it was a wonderful project that we feel benefitted our community and participants alike. See the article on the following page.

COSMOPOLITAN INDUSTRIES PREPARES FOR A GOLDEN YEAR IN 2021

Planning for a 50th anniversary celebration during the time of COVID is a daunting task but one that Cosmo is approaching with a great deal of ingenuity. The creativity starts with an anniversary logo, donated by Derek Reimer of Koncept Sign Group, which builds on the current logo and pays homage to the past. The wheel of the stylized wheelchair becomes part of the number 50. The ‘spokes’ of the wheelchair is actually Cosmo’s original logo. It’s the letter ‘C’ engulfing the letter ‘I’ and it’s placed at the four points of a compass (N,S,E,W), representing all four corners of Saskatoon. It’s fitting that this oldest portion of the logo is now in gold as well. The two individuals in the logo represent partnership as they look to be about to ‘high five’ each other and there is a sense that they are moving forward together. Lastly a ring of text brings attention to Cosmo’s mission and the milestone that has been reached.

It’s highly unlikely that a big public celebration concert and party like the very successful “Miracle on 34th Street” festival held in 2011 will be allowed in 2021. In its place, Cosmo is approaching musicians with the request to share a video of a couple of songs and submit them for the creation of a ‘virtual’ concert which will be available to be viewed online. Saskatchewan has a lot of talent as Telemiracle proves every year and Cosmo is looking forward to having a mix of professional and amateur musicians for our virtual event. Anyone wanting to make a submission can contact Cosmo for details.

Instead of one big event as the focus of the 50th anniversary, Cosmo is designating a theme for each month to build activities around with small numbers in a socially distanced manner. October is already Disability Employment Awareness Month (DEAM) and in November, the theme will be the Spirit of Cosmo. Staff, program participants and the public are invited to suggest themes for other months.

The 50th anniversary will weave its way through much of what Cosmo does in 2021. Specially designed face masks were distributed to participants and staff and a handy fanny pack also included the logo.

A year-long celebration of creating opportunities may involve 5 people at a time rather than a 500 person party but 2021 is going to turn out to be a memorable year.

TURNING LEAF LOOKS ONWARD AND UPWARD!

Over the last several months, like every organization, we have had to adapt to many changes as they happen. We’ve had to adjust our sails so that we can ensure we can provide uninterrupted services to the vulnerable and marginalized individuals we support living with mental illness and disabilities. Across our agency we continue to watch our teams rise up in the most inspiring, innovative, and effective ways.

We are so incredibly proud of our staff for how they continue to show up for our participants and ensure they are supported, connected, and safe during these uncertain times.

With code red restrictions and the current lockdown, our participants with mental illness who don’t have phones have struggled to connect with their support staff when in crisis. Many of our high-risk participants are living in poverty, and some struggle with substance use and are either homeless or living in unsafe situations. Without the ability to call their staff in a crisis, and with no place to go in the community to use a phone during lockdown, we knew we had to find a way to bridge them. So, we reached out to our donors and made a public plea on social media asking for donations of smartphones. That call to action converted to an anonymous donation from a large cell phone provider of 100 phones and sim cards with data plans over the last several months.

We also had the Assiniboia Chamber of Commerce offer to safely collect smartphone donations for us,

which put more phones in hands that need them.

These phones have quite literally served as lifelines for our participants. We know of three situations where participants credited their ability to use their donated cell phone to call 911 or their support staff in crisis to saving their life.

Traditionally, this time of year we gather with our staff and participants for our annual Christmas lunch. It’s easily everyone’s favourite day of the year, and for many of the vulnerable people we support, it’s the only Christmas they will have. But because of the pandemic we couldn’t gather this year. We are so happy we were able to reimagine our annual Christmas event and bring a warm meal and the Christmas spirit to our participants this year. We partnered with a local catering company and they lovingly prepared warm turkey dinners and our Direct Support Workers and Case Managers personally delivered them to our participants – socially distanced and wearing PPE, of course. There were connections made, bellies fed, and hearts filled.

Things might look a little different this year, but the compassion and connection remains and that’s what matters. We are so grateful to our staff for making sure the folks we support are remembered and cared for and safe every day, but especially at a time of year that can feel especially isolating and lonely.

As we approach the cusp of a new year, we here at Turning Leaf are filled with hope. We are deeply dedicated to accepting what comes our way and rising above every challenge the coming year might bring. If the past year has taught us anything, it’s that when we work together, with our core values at the centre of everything we do, there’s nothing that can shake us. Onward and upward!

Flexible: Can be used towards any savings goals

SARC is pleased to announce that new to 2021, SARC now offers a Group TFSA option through Co-operators. This option is open to all employers who participate in the SARC Pension Plan. In fact, if your organization already participates in the SARC Pension Plan, you automatically have access to the Group TFSA.

The TFSA is a registered account introduced by the Government of Canada in 2009.

The goal is to encourage Canadians to save money-not just for retirement, but for a variety of reasons.

A registered account is an investment account that is given taxdeferred or tax-sheltered status by the government.

ABC’s of TFSA’s • A TFSA (Tax Free Savings Account) is a tax-sheltered account that’s great for both short and long-term savings.

• Anyone over 18 in Canada, with a valid SIN, can open a TFSA; no maximum age.

• Each year the government sets a maximum contribution amount – for 2021 it is $6000.

Why a TFSA Here are some reasons why you might look at purchasing a TFSA: • You have maxed out your RRSP contribution.

• You need access to your savings before retirement.

• You expect your marginal tax rates to increase, especially in retirement.

• You are retired and looking for a tax-free place to save.

• You’d simply like to have a tax-efficient means to save funds for those rainy-day needs.

Convenient: Can withdraw at any time

• Withdrawals increase your contribution limit the following year. And, better still, unused contribution room can be carried forward to use in future years.

Tax efficient: TFSA grows tax-free and withdrawals are tax-free

• Already paid tax on the money you put into your TFSA, so won’t have to pay anything when you take money out.

• Investment gains/interest not taxed!

Non-disruptive: TFSA income and

withdrawals do not affect eligibility for income-tested benefits/credits like: • Guaranteed Income Supplement • Old Age Security • Recent reports suggest that for Canadians making less than $50,000 a year and expecting to receive the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) at retirement, a TFSA will have a greater benefit than an RRSP.

C y b e r R i s k s t o W at c h The most effective way to deal with a cyber attack is to be prepared ahead of time so that it is completely ineffective at best and does minimal damage at worst. While it is impossible to know exactly what type of cyber attack will strike and when, analyzing recent trends in cyber security makes it possible to spot trends and plan accordingly.

THE IMPORTANCE OF PREVENTION Over 28 million Canadians were affected by a data breach in 2019, with 680 data breaches being reported to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada. In addition, the average cost of a data breach for a Canadian business was nearly $6 million. The 2019 calendar year saw record-breaking penalties across the U.S. and Europe for not having robust cyber security arrangements, totalling nearly $2 billion in fines. Notably, the organizations fined were not necessarily victims of security breaches, but were instead found to be compromised by their respective government regulators.

By implementing extensive cyber security practices across your organization, you reduce the chances of becoming victim to cyber attacks and incurring the resulting monetary loss, public backlash and government scrutiny.

The 5 Biggest Threats Expected •

Targeted ransomware—Ransomware has become increasingly targeted toward specific businesses and industries, particularly toward government and health care organizations.

•

Phishing—Phishing has become much more common in the last year, and has even spread from primarily using email systems toward including SMS and other messaging systems.

•

Mobile malware—In recent years there has been an increase in attacks by mobile banking

•

Internet of things (IoT) attacks—With the spread of 5G comes new devices connected to the IoT. Each new device connected to the IoT represents another possible entry point for a security breach.

•

Internal attacks—One of the most dangerous sources of cyber attacks on organizations comes from inside the organization itself.

Employees with access to important data may cause a great deal of harm if they decide to abuse their access for personal gain, or if they accidentally allow their access to be compromised by attackers.

IMPROVING YOUR CYBER HYGIENE Although being on top of the latest trends in cyber security is incredibly beneficial, cyber threats come in many different, often unpredictable forms.

Even with the most up-to-date cyber security protection and practices, an attacker only needs to find a single vulnerability to exploit and gain access to sensitive data. As such, it is important for organizations to practise effective cyber hygiene in order to further increase protection from cyber attacks.

WHAT IS CYBER HYGIENE? In short, cyber hygiene describes the basic practices required to maintain a system’s health and improve security. The idea is comparable to basic personal hygiene in that it describes the basic proactive steps that should be taken to reduce the risk of infection. Because many cyber attacks result from exploiting lapses in password security, phishing scams and other basic principles, practising consistent cyber hygiene is just as important as staying up to date on the latest threats and trends.

7 SUGGESTED CYBER HYGIENE PRACTICES 1. Install protection software—Antivirus, anti-spyware and firewall software purchased from trusted sources should be installed, activated and kept updated at all times.

2. Practise smart password security—All passwords should be unique, strong and changed regularly across the organization. Where possible, enable twostep verification.

3. Look out for anything that appears suspicious — Many cyber attackers attempt to impersonate a trusted individual, organization, website or software.

These impersonations should not be interacted with in any way, including clicking a “cancel” or similar button in a fraudulent on-screen alert.

4. Schedule regular data backups—Important files should be backed up frequently to an external source such as an external storage device or cloud server that is not linked to your computer.

5. Be wary of anything free—Free protection software, services and even Wi-Fi can pose a potential threat to your cyber security. Avoid downloading anything free that seems too good to be true, and be sure to use a secure Wi-Fi connection when making monetary transactions or working with sensitive data.

6. Clear your cache after visiting secure sites— Confidential information shared over secure sites may linger in your computer’s cache, making it important to clear your cache after visiting secure sites.

15 The industries most affected by this attack would be health care and manufacturing, at costs of US$25 billion and US$24 billion, respectively.

Notably, the report strongly suggests that the global economy is not prepared for such an attack, with 86 per cent of the total economic costs uninsured. The Cyber Risk Management project stresses the importance of organizations being better prepared for ransomware attacks, saying that it is no longer a question of “if” an organization will be attacked, but “when” they will be attacked.
