Strategies to Approaching Later Life Issues with People Experiencing Disability and Dementia

with Leslie Udell, NTG Canada This session will look at how organizations and staff can plan for age and dementia-friendly supports and services.

We will look at how we can collaborate and build relationships to break down barriers, and how to evaluate the demographics of your organization, so that you can prepare for supporting people experiencing disability through the process of aging.

Talking About End of Life With People Experiencing Disability with Professor Emeritus Roger J. Stancliffe Centre for Disability, Research, and Policy, University of Sydney, Australia People experiencing disability have the right to know about dying and death, but have few opportunities to understand or plan for end of life.

This presentation will offer an outline of major findings from end-of-life research, followed by an overview of how to teach people experiencing disability about end of life.

The session will also include the free online resource, Talking End of Life with people with intellectual disability (TEL).

The Talking End of Life (TEL) resource features many short videos of people experiencing disability and their support professionals. These videos will be used to illustrate end-of-life issues and to demonstrate a range of teaching methods for you to use in everyday natural contexts.

Engaging Employers – Putting Your Best Foot Forward

Are you an employment professional who is not sure how to approach an employer for the first time? This session will help you learn how to get in the door, talk with, and present your employment service to the employer.

You will also learn how to best showcase the job seeker’s skills and abilities, and the difference it can make to their business operations. You only get one chance to make the first impression with an employer, and this session will help you to put your best foot forward.

COVID-19: Governance, Risk Implications, and the Role of the Board

with Peter Wright, The Planning Group COVID-19 has had a profound and lasting impact on nonprofit organizations across Canada. While staff, partners, and clients have experienced unprecedented change, Boards of Directors have faced fundamental risks and made vital decisions to ensure the long-term sustainability of their organizations.

Where there is no ‘Board playbook’ for addressing the fallout of a pandemic, history and best practice can provide meaningful guidance for what to do next. In this engaging session, The Planning Group President, Peter Wright, will outline the steps that Boards of Directors can take and ask questions they should be asking to steward their organizations through this unprecedented time.

More than a Buzz Word – Thinking About What ‘Trauma-Informed’ Means When Supporting People Experiencing Disability with Margaret Newbury Jones, Shade Consulting Everyone has experienced many things in their lives – how we perceive these experiences lets us know how to respond. Traumatic experiences are no different.

This session will discuss the first steps of understanding trauma and how you can support people experiencing disability. We will talk about things that people experiencing disability may consider to be traumatic (it may not be what you think), what clues we might see that are commonly missed, and how to support people once you have recognized that trauma has occurred.

Wednesday October 28

More Alike Than Different – Sexuality and Disability

1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

All people are sexual beings, having a disability does not change this.

In this session you will experience a frank conversation about sex and disability. What do we need to know as supports? How do we support people experiencing disability learn about, understand, and express their own sexuality while decreasing their vulnerability. Tips on how to honour their identity and desires in a person-centred way, so they can be full contributing sexually fulfilled adults, will be shared.

Thursday October 29 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Level IT Up with Ann Kresta, Level It Up This session will provide a brief introduction to the Autism Spectrum followed by a description of Level IT Up, a social enterprise in Winnipeg working to increase employment of people with Autism in the technology sector.

You will learn about the Level IT Up training and assessment process that has been adapted from Meticulon in Calgary, and be provided with tips and interesting perspectives on how to more effectively recruit both candidates and employers.

Thursday October 29

Health, Health Promotion, and Aging for People Experiencing Disability

1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

with Tamar Heller, Distinguished Professor, Department Head, DirectorIDHD Disability and Human Development, University of Illinois The session will present state of the art information on the health status, preventive services, and health promotion of adults experiencing disability as they age.

You will be provided with strategies that community-based organizations, families, and people experiencing disability can use to maintain or improve their health.

These strategies include improved accessibility to health care, health education curricula focused on nutrition and physical activity, and public health initiatives.

SARC VIRTUAL CONFERENCE DAY FIVE Friday October 30 9:00 - 11:00 a.m.

Awareness and Considerations in Planning End-of-Life Care in a Group Home with Janice Nesbitt, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Winnipeg Regional Health Authority People experiencing disability are able to lead full and productive lives with the support of their families, direct service workers, site supervisors and clinical managers.

Eventually, they will reach a point in which they are in their final months of life.

In these situations, it is often desirable for them to spend their final days at home.

Friday October 30 1:00 - 3:00 p.m.

This session will discuss how organizations and staff can recognize when there is a need to prepare for end-of-life, considerations in your approach to care and what steps are needed to support the individual, families and the care team during this time and through to death at home.

Transition Crisis – the Turbulent Path from Change to Transition (Mental Health during COVID-19) with Jim and Angellah Brayshaw It is no secret that change is inevitable, but change, whether good, bad, or other, can place us in distress and leave us in a transition crisis. This state of transition crisis can impact our mental and physical health, upset our personal, family, or company rhythm and bring with it a trove of uncomfortable reactions. The signs and symptoms of transition crisis may be easy to identify at times, but other times are hard to see.

This session will help you understand how transition crisis has snuck up on us in the past and may be lurking around the next corner of change ahead.

During this session, you will assess your past transition responses to change and learn to identify and avoid the many unwanted results of transition crisis in the future.
