On behalf of SARC, we welcome you to the SARC Spring Conference 2017, which will take place at the beautiful Saskatoon Inn. We have another great lineup of top-notch presenters from all over North America, and we can’t wait for you to join us – this year, we have a wider variety of sessions for you to attend, providing more choice and flexibility than ever before!

In the area of disability services, we are looking forward to learning more about “The Person Centred Journey” and the work of the provincial Person-Centred Thinking Task Team, and we are thrilled to have Shelley Moore, Special Educator, Inclusion Advocate, and Consultant, with us to provide some great sessions on inclusive education!

New this year, in addition to the concurrent sessions related to disability services and supported employment, we have a conference stream entirely on workplace health, wellness, and safety. We’ve got topics in mental health and wellness presented by Brett Francis and Rachelle Brockman. We are also fortunate to have SHSA hold two sessions including “Safety When Working Alone” and “The Respectful Workplace”, and we’ll be joined by safety expert and guru Eldeen Pozniak who will take you on a journey to explore your definition of safety.

WHAT MAKES LIFE WORTHWHILE AND HOW WE CAN SUPPORT EACH OTHER TO GET THERE Peter Leidy We are looking forward to having Peter open the conference with a session that will provide us with the opportunity to learn, think, and work together around ways to enhance our wellbeing. Many people think wellbeing is about being happy, but it is much more than that! It goes beyond health, wealth, and being successful. In fact, the Gallup organization’s research in 150 countries (conducted over 50 years) will surprise you.

Peter will share how five elements of wellbeing (career, social, physical, financial, and community) interact with each other and contribute to our overall wellbeing.

About Peter: Peter Leidy has been learning from people experiencing disability since 1983.

Peter is an international consultant, facilitator, listener, learner, improviser, and speaker who focuses on personalized supports and community membership for people with disabilities.

He also writes and sings songs about human serviceland and those who find themselves connected to it.

Peter conducts workshops, develops training materials, writes songs, speaks and sings at conferences, and works with organizations, government agencies, families, and paid supporters to promote positive support, inclusion, building healthy relationships, and thinking differently about people who are called “challenging.” (Peter himself is known to be non-compliant at times, and can often be found exhibiting attention-seeking behavior.) For almost 20 years, he worked for Options in Community Living, a supported living agency in Madison, Wisconsin. His roles included direct support, service coordination, recruiting and supporting direct service staff, community building, and administrative responsibilities.

1A: DOING OUR BEST WORK: 10 INGREDIENTS OF QUALITY SUPPORT Peter Leidy What do we really mean by commonly used phrases such as ‘best practice’ and ‘quality supports’? What do these mean when we consider people with disabilities and those who do the important work of supporting them? Through real experiences and stories, this conversation examines 10 important ingredients of excellent direct support, taking a good look at how we can measure when we are at our best, and help us to remember what matters most about our work.

1B: INCLUSIVE EDUCATION: WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHEN, WHY?!

Shelley Moore This session will deconstruct what inclusive education means in today’s classrooms and communities. Shelley will discuss common misunderstandings and myths and leave with ideas and possibilities of inclusive leaning communities and all who benefit.

About Shelley: Based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, self-

proclaimed “Inclusion Geek” Shelley Moore consults locally, provincially and beyond. A special educator, inclusion advocate, and consultant, her presentations include school, district and provincial professional development days throughout British Columbia, as well as various leading conferences throughout North America, including CEC, IRA and NCTE. Her interactive presentations are constructed based on contexts of classroom, schools and communities and integrate theory and effective practices of inclusion, special education, curriculum and technology. She completed an undergraduate degree in Special Education at the University of Alberta, her masters at Simon Fraser University, and is currently a PhD student at the University of British Columbia.

1C: PERSON CENTRED JOURNEY Michael Lavis & Dixie Kennedy (In partnership with Certified HSA Person Centred Thinking Instructors) Person centred culture is rooted in a common set of beliefs, values and behaviours in which it is clear and evident that people direct and are at the forefront of their own lives. Supporting all people to have choice and control, meaningful relationships and a full community life where their gifts and contributions are welcomed and celebrated is at the heart of a person centred culture.

This interactive learning session will begin with a brief overview of the ongoing work of the provincial Person-centred Thinking Task Team; Co-chairs, Michael Lavis and Dixie Kenney will debut a new tool to assist in the journey to become more person centred in the delivery of services. Additionally, in collaboration with certified Helen Sanderson and Associates (HSA) Canada Person Centred Thinking Trainers, participants will be introduced to a Person Centred Thinking Tool — the One-Page Profile! Participants will be guided through the development of their own One-Page Profile to illustrate the universality of this tool which serves as the foundation to personalization! The One-Page Profile provides a way of knowing what really matters to people by capturing all the important information about a person on a single sheet of paper under three simple headings: what people appreciate about me, what’s important to me and how best to support me.

The work of the Person-centred Thinking Task Team began in April 2012 and includes representation from the Ministry of Social Services, Community Based Organizations, Saskatchewan Approved Private Homes Inc., Saskatchewan Association for Community Living and SARC. It is currently working in conjunction with the Comprehensive Personal Planning and Support Policy (CPP&SP) Review Committee.

About Michael: Michael relocated to Canada in July 2009 to become COR’s founding Executive Director. He has completed a MA in Human Security and Peacebuilding at Royal Roads University, the Effective Executive program at the University of Saskatchewan, and is currently enrolled in the Values Based Leadership graduate program at Royal Roads University.

Michael has over fifteen years of global experience developing opportunities for marginalized individuals; from South America to Africa, and Southeast Asia to Canada, Michael has worked and researched extensively within various international organizations. Michael is passionately committed to strengthening the disability services sector in Saskatchewan and to forge out new beginnings for the province’s most vulnerable citizens. Michael is a member of the Saskatchewan Disability Strategy’s Citizen Consultation Team, Co-Lead of the provincial Person Centered Thinking Task Team, a member of the provincial CPP&SP Committee, and member of the provincial Attraction, Retention and Compensation (ARC) Task Team. He too is an active member within the Gentle Teaching community, serving on both the Executive Committee of the Gentle Teaching International Board of Directors and Steering Committee of the Gentle Teaching Canada Network. Michael is a certified Gentle Teaching Master Mentor and ColourSpectrums Facilitator.

About Dixie: Dixie’s passion for community inclusion for individuals

experiencing disability started over 20 years ago with her first job in a home that supported three men in Prince Albert. This experience and those fellows taught her more about respect, integrity and community than she could imagine. This experience jump started her into her education. She now has a Bachelor of Social Work and is a registered social worker. She has practiced in the field of education, Community Based Organizations, and with the Ministry of Social Services. It has been just over 17 years with Community Living Service Delivery. She has held different positions and is committed to helping make a difference in the lives of individuals experiencing disability and working as a change agent for continued full community inclusion.

1D: THE RESPECTFUL WORKPLACE Lisa Chavady A respectful workplace is one that supports the physical, emotional, and social well-being of each employee. This session defines what a respectful workplace looks like and what you can do to help maintain it. We will also review discrimination in the workplace and how it ties in to the Human Rights Legislation. This will lead us into a discussion about harassment and the steps to take during different scenarios in the workplace.

About Lisa: Lisa Chavady joined the SHSA in 2014 and is a Safety

Advisor. Lisa brought with her a background of safety involvement from a variety of different sectors. Lisa has also completed her Occupational Health & Safety Practitioner’s Applied Certificate from Saskatchewan Polytechnic. Lisa was instrumental in the implementation of SHSA’s new safety evaluation tool and has taken an active role in mentoring new advisors.

DAY ONE - CONCURRENT SESSIONS Session 2 - (2:45 pm - 4:15 pm)

2A: THERE’S AN APP FOR THAT - SUPPORTING COMMUNICATION VIA TABLET TECHNOLOGY Dr. Brenda Fossett, BCBA-D This session will address current trends in the use of hand-held tablet devices, such as the iPad, to support individuals experiencing disability.

There will be a focus on the use of apps for visual scheduling and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Participants will learn how such apps can be used to support individuals to participate in daily tasks, increase independence, and communicate more effectively.

About Brenda: Dr. Brenda Fossett, BCBA-D, is an inspired teacher

who is widely admired for her ability to convey complex concepts to those who work with children and adults experiencing disability, whether they are educational professionals or parents. She is an instructor in the Applied Behavior Analysis-Autism Department at Capilano University, adjunct faculty at the University of British Columbia, and a doctoral level Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Brenda began her career teaching deaf children with developmental disabilities at the BC School for the Deaf and, over the past twenty years, has provided support to children, youth, and adults with developmental disabilities in home, school, and community settings, with a strong focus on Positive Behavior Support. Her scholarly and clinical interests include: applied behavior analysis, the implementation of positive behavior support in home, school and community settings, tablet technologies to support learning and skill acquisition in individuals with developmental disabilities, and educational interventions for deaf children with developmental disabilities.

2B: INCLUSIVE EDUCATION: GETTING TO KNOW LEARNERS FROM A STRENGTH BASED PERSPECTIVE Shelley Moore This session will look at how changing planning models are moving away from deficit medical based frameworks to plans that look at the strengths and contributions of individuals. Shelley will share some examples and share strategies of how these strength based perspectives can guide program planning with a focus on balance and growth rather than retrofitting and standardization. This session will also look at planning frameworks such as Response to Intervention and Class Profiles.

2C: BUILDING BLOCKS PROGRAM Becky McLeod and Dan Innes In this session you will learn about the Building Block program — an innovative program designed to assist Aboriginal youth with a diagnosis of Autism, or presenting characteristics along the spectrum, reach self-identified education or employment goals. Particular attention will be given to the three key areas the program is structured upon and their value: employment skills development, workplace skill assessment and increased self-awareness. Join others in learning more about how the Autism Resource Centre and Street Culture Project have begun to address the service gap that exists for this unique demographic.

About Becky: Becky first began working for the Autism Resource Centre

as a support worker in their therapeutic summer program. After completing her education degree, she moved to Thailand to teach Science, English and Math at a private school. Upon moving back to Regina, Becky returned to the Autism Resource Centre as a Program Coordinator. Her primary role is to help individuals with autism and aboriginal ancestry transition from school to meaningful employment.

About Dan: Since 2005, Dan Innes has worked in the field of disability

at four different agencies in Regina both as a frontline worker and as a supervisor. In his current role as co-facilitator for the Building Block program, with Street Culture Project, Dan helps Aboriginal youth on the Autism spectrum move towards their self identified employment or education goals.

Dan achieved certification in Choice Theory/Reality Therapy in 2014 and has a true passion for working with people. Dan has two beautiful children and happily lives in the same Cathedral area he grew up in.

2D: SAFETY WHEN WORKING ALONE Lisa Chavady Do you know what steps you need to follow as an employer? Employee? This session will define what working alone is as well as help you set up the steps to take in order to be prepared.

3B: HEARING VOICES THAT ARE DISTRESSING (LIMITED TO 24 PEOPLE) Annette Borrows This is a truly unique learning experience that will allow staff/family/students to have a glimpse into the lived experience of trying to function and perform tasks while being “symptomatic.”

Hearing Voices That Are Distressing is a simulated training in which participants use an iPod and listen to a specifically designed audiotape. While experiencing the simulation of hearing voices, participants are asked to participate in a series of tasks typical to those in a mental health services setting, (day program, comprehension testing, interacting with the public, psychological testing). There is also a time for debriefing and a discussion around coping skills.

The learning goals of the session include: • Understanding the day-to-day challenges that face people with psychiatric disabilities and to marvel at their strength and resiliency • Learning about the subjective experience of hearing voices that are distressing • Becoming more empathetic • Increasing your awareness and in turn reflecting on your practices or delivery services.

About Annette: Annette Borrows has been serving people

experiencing disability towards employment for the past 17 years. Her experience ranges from being an online worker in a residential home, a home share provider and an employment specialist for people that have persistent mental health issues, those with mobility issues and more recently has focused on transition of community inclusion to employment.

Annette has also written and facilitates the Supported Employment Specialist series at Douglas College and Okanagan University College.

She has spearheaded and written content for Canada’s National Supported Employment Best Practices found at www.employmentforall. ca. Annette’s teaching style is down to earth, filled with success stories, practical tools to glean important information from the people you are serving and a realistic, successful approach to the world of employment counselling that results in real work for real pay for Job Seekers.

3C: CUSTOMIZED EMPLOYMENT - WHAT IT IS AND WHY WE NEED IT! Beth Keeton This interactive session provides an overview of Customized Employment (CE), including the core concepts of Discovery, blended/braided funding (for example, two funding sources for the same job seeker), and economic self-sufficiency. Learn how CE can open the door to a wider variety of employment outcomes, including business ownership, for a greater number of individuals with disabilities and how it can be particularly beneficial for transitioning students. Join us for lively discussion while we learn from the success of individuals who have used CE as the foundation for securing employment that not only matches for their skills and interests but also pays the bills.

About Beth: Beth Keeton is the Executive Director for The Center for Social Capital and Chief Operating Officer for Griffin-Hammis Associates, Inc. For the last 20 years, Beth has provided extensive training and technical assistance to individuals and agencies throughout the U.S. on systems change, customized employment, self-employment, systematic instruction, and benefits analysis.

Her work with the state Vocational Rehabilitation agencies in Florida and Texas included the development and implementation of a Self-Employment Certification curriculum for providers. She serves as a National Subject Matter Expert for the Office of Disability Employment Policy’s State Leadership Employment First Mentoring Program. Beth co-wrote Navigating Government Benefits & Employment: A Guidebook for Veterans with Disabilities, and is a co-author of the recently revised, Making Self-Employment Work for People with Disabilities. She earned her Master’s Degree from the University of Oregon in 1996 and became a Certified Benefits Planner through Cornell University in 2007.

3D: THE INVISIBLE WOMAN UNLOCKING THE UNIQUE POWER OF MISUNDERSTOOD PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH CHALLENGES THEY SEE ME BUT THEY DON’T REALLY SEE ME Brett Francis This session will give attendees a general understanding of mental health such as what does “mental health” really mean, what does it mean to have a mental health challenge, and how can we understand for ourselves or support those close to us who have a mental illness.

In this interactive session, Brett will clarify and correct misconceptions about mental health and teach people how to talk about it and side step the stigma. We will learn how to embrace mental illness and challenges by using them to our advantage.

About Brett: Brett Francis is a Professional Speaker and Mental

Health Advocate who comes armed with passion and personal experience. She opens up greater conversation about mental health because the more people talking about it, the more attention it gets and more it gets taken out of the darkness.

When Brett was six, she was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome and severe ADHD. When she was 17 she was also diagnosed with anxiety, OCD and panic disorder and has struggles with mental health and disabilities for the greater part of her life. She lived to learn that this doesn’t have to be disabling and activated a power that she may not have found without it. Now she shares her empowerment and experiences to educate others, stop the stigma and give others struggling confidence in their own challenges. Having a mental health challenge or disability does not mean that we are broken.

Through professional speaking, hosting her TV and radio show, writing her book, providing seminars and coaching, creating her mental health clothing line, Brett has inspired thousands of people dealing with struggles to fit in, feel ‘normal,’ and overcome the barriers in their lives by rocking their challenges.

4A: SUPPORTING PEOPLE EXPERIENCING DISABILITY NAVIGATE THROUGH GRIEF AND LOSS Living Through Loss Counselling This session will guide you through the process of supporting clients through grief and loss.

Grieving is an exceptionally difficult process for everyone. Whether it be because of the loss of a loved one, moving to a new home, or saying goodbye to a close support worker, gain a better understanding of how to help individuals experiencing disability through the difficult times in their lives.

About Living Through Loss Counselling: Living

Through Loss Counselling, based out of Vancouver, BC, offers professional grief counselling and emotional support to anyone who is experiencing stress due to life change or loss. They also offer grief and loss training to professionals who deal with clients experiencing grief and loss.

4B: WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER – STAYING FOCUSED ON THE PERSON IN CHALLENGING TIMES Peter Leidy It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by pressures that come with challenging work, confusing bureaucracies, and ever-shrinking funding. In this interactive and motivating session, Peter will share some ideas to help us keep people we serve first, celebrate the important work in the disability services sector, and engage others to work with us on the journey to promote connections and quality in people’s lives.

4C: CUSTOMIZED EMPLOYMENT AND TRANSITION Beth Keeton This session explores the role of the schools in using Customized Employment as the foundation to achieve a successful transition to employment for a greater number of students with disabilities. Particular emphasis will be placed on the importance of paid work during the transition years. Join us for an interactive discussion on opportunities and strategies to support transitioning to higher-paying, sustainable employment for all.

4D: WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SAFETY? Eldeen Pozniak When you think of safety, what do you think - what’s your definition, and, more importantly, what do you do? Eldeen will take you on a safety journey that will have you explore your definition. With humour, stories, and some frontline experience, we will explore some of the hazards and actions we can take.

About Eldeen: Eldeen Pozniak is the director of Pozniak Safety

Associates Incorporated. She is a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), a Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC), a Certified Health and Safety Management System Auditor (SCHMSA), and has a diverse educational background. She has attained both a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Saskatchewan. Eldeen is committed to Occupational Health, Safety Concepts, and Standards. Eldeen’s commitment is demonstrated by her involvement as an advisor and consultant to various government, business, and industry sectors such as being on the ISO Canadian Working Committee.

She has been lecturing at a variety of technical institutes and at the University of Saskatchewan from 1997 to 2009, developing and delivering numerous courses for the Occupational Health and Safety Certificate program, and is an International Keynote and workshop presenter. Due to her commitment and professionalism, she has been nominator for and received numerous awards such as the YMCA Women of Excellence - Women in the Profession, the Women in Business Athena Award, the 2001 Saskatchewan Safety Professional of the Year, the 2011 Canadian Safety Professional of the Year, and the ASSE’s 100 Women in Safety.

More than ever before, we play many different roles in our lives. We are professionals, parents, spouses, friends, caregivers of elderly relatives, and volunteers in our communities. We must also make room in our lives for taking care of our own physical and mental well being. Not surprisingly, achieving balance among all of these competing priorities can be challenging.

During this session we will explore situations and suggestions to help us balance our priorities and maintain optimal mental health both in our personal & professional lives.
