Greetings to team SARCAN across Saskatchewan! Happy 30th Anniversary, everyone! It is hard to believe that three decades have passed since the inception of SARCAN in 1988. Celebrating SARCAN’s 30th hasn’t just been about counting the years (even though we are professional counters), it’s been about counting all of our shared successes over the years. When you go to a depot or a processing plant now, they are big, bright and modern. Our equipment is state-ofthe-art and we’re leading the way with technology. Expansion and depot improvements continue across the province. We moved into a new depot in Central Butte in May. Work is underway in Fort Qu’Appelle and Shaunavon. New electric forklifts were delivered to a number of depots this summer and new NexGen flatteners will be arriving for installation in the next few months. All of this exciting change has not altered who we are at the core. The people of SARCAN are what make this organization great, and celebrating the 4 SARCAN Spirit
hard work and dedication of our employees is the most important part of celebrating 30 years of success. Now, when you walk into a depot you may see
faces, no matter what the job entails. We get along with each other, and we recognize that we are all working collectively to save millions upon millions of pounds of recyclable material from ending up in our landfills. In Particular, we set return records in April, May, June and July this year. July was the second busiest month on record. To the end of September 2018 we are up over 8 million beverage containers over the same period in 2017. Return rates remain high at over 85% for beverage containers and we continue to lead the nation in diversion and return rates. Thanks to everyone at the depots and the plants for their continued hard work and dedication. It is an honour and a privilege to work with you and be part of this amazing family. a customer’s order being counted at a bay by a Recycling Technician, you may see a customer donating their deposit refunds to a variety of fundraising accounts from TeleMiracle to a local sports fundraiser. You may see an employee working away on a tablet to get trained with the latest information on Aspire. You might see a cashier ringing in an order on a touch screen till. But one thing that has not changed is you will always see a smile on our employees’
Salvage markets for the material we recycle have held steady through the summer months. We have seen recent reductions in salvage prices this fall, most of which is a result of rising transport costs. Recognition day was a great event again this year as we celebrated the 30th year of service for SARCAN Recycling across the province. This combined with SARC’s 50th anniversary has made 2018 a great year for our organization and its members! -Kevin Acton and Sean Collins Fall 2018 5
SARCAN Employee Re SARCAN’s Annual Employee Recognition Day was quite an event in 2018! For the first time ever, SARCAN celebrated long-term service in not only 5-25 years of service, but this year the inaugural 30 year award was added to the milestones. Many of the original employees that started in 1988 were there to celebrate 30 years! We could not be more proud, three decades of employment is a remarkable milestone to celebrate. September 20, 2018, was the 25th annual Employee Recognition Day. Employees from all over the province traveled to Saskatoon to celebrate. 100 recipients received long-term service awards: 25 – 5 year award recipients for a total of 125 years; 21 – 10 year award recipients for a total of 210 years; 11 – 15 year award recipients for a total of 165 years; 16 – 20 year award recipients for a total of 320 years; 10 – 25 year award recipients for a total of 250 years; 11 – 30 year award recipients for a total of 330 years. ...for a grand total of 1,400 years! Including the experience of our casual employees and retirees, we celebrated over 1,600 years of experience last year. WOW! Thanks to all of our long-term service award recipients. The fact that we are celebrating 30 years of service is a testament to the dedication and commitment of those early SARCAN pioneers and all who have joined our team since then. Celebrating SARCAN Pride at Rec Day
Naomi Pribyl calls Swift Current home and oversees the depots in the southwest.
Recognition Day is one of my most favourite days of the year. It is a day filled with excitement and pride. As we spent the morning setting up for the event, recipients started showing up three hours before the start time. While they waited for the event to start we heard about their excitement, and met the family or friend they brought to the event. A lot of the recipients arrived wearing their SARCAN hoodies and/or t-shirts, showing how proud they are to be working for SARCAN. At the afternoon event, we found out which recipients were the movie and music buffs, the artists, the ones with creativity and the ones who traveled. I was glad I had lots of these types on my team. While everyone arrived to the supper, the excitement was evident, with guests asking questions like, “what’s for supper,” or, “are you going to dance with me.” The recipients came dressed up in whatever they were comfortable in jeans, shirt and tie, suits, and/or dresses . At the evening event there was so much pride as the recipients walked up to accept their award. There were fist pumps, smiles, cheering and clapping. We heard lovely comments about the recipients. Comments like dedicated, hard-working nature, fun, great with customers, best forklift driver, great smile, and so much more. After the awards were done, many employees were so proud of their award, they were showing them off to families and friends. Then it was time to do some dancing and get pictures taken in the photo booth, with co-workers and new found friends. As I talked to the recipients throughout the day, they talked about how much they love working for SARCAN. They each had their own stories of the change and growth they have seen. The bigger and brighter buildings, addition of PPE, the addition of new product, setting records in returns, new crushing equipment, new POS system, and Drop & Go. Whether they were a 30 year or a 5 year recipient they all have the same pride in working for SARCAN and were a part of almost the same amount of change and growth. Proof that SARCAN is constantly ensuring that we are the best recycling company for the staff and the customers. Sharing Celebrating Sean Collins, Jim Schaeunberg, Naomi Pribyl this day with all the recipients, hearing their stories, seeing the pride and excitement in receiving an award makes me so proud that I am part of the SARCAN system. Depot News Wynyard, Canora and Humboldt Celebrate New Locations 2018 was a busy year across the system, especially for those on the move! Wynyard The Wynyard depot moved into its new location back in January, but the official grand opening celebration did not take place until early April, as it was a joint grand opening with SARCAN and the brand new Town of Wynyard Recycle Centre, located just next door to the new depot. It was a lovely celebration, with lots of guests in attendance. Government Relations Minister, the
Honourable Warren Kaeding, attended the event on behalf of the Government of Saskatchewan. Also in attendance was the Mayor of Wynyard, Mr. Albert Boylak and other special guests from the town. CTV Yorkton even came down for the celebration and covered the new depot, and they did a feature on the new Drop & Go service. Canora The Canora depot hosted a combined grand opening and customer appreciation day event on July 31, 2018. The new depot is located in the former SLGA Liquor Store, right in downtown Canora. Everyone was decked out in purple 30th anniversary shirts, and the depot handed out treats and refreshments to those in attendance. In attendance for the official ribbon cutting ceremony was the local MLA for Canora-Pelly,
Mr. Terry Dennis, as well as representatives from Canora’s Economic Development Commission. Humboldt The Humboldt depot moved in the spring and hosted a big grand opening celebration on August 22, 2018. In attendance was the Finance Minister, the honourable Donna Harpauer, as well as the Environment Minister, the honourable Dustin Duncan, as well as Mr. Michael Beheil, the local city councilor. The Humboldt depot is a brand new building, and is located much closer to the main downtown core in Humboldt.

New website encourages school recycling

Depot News This fall, SARCAN launched a new recycling website for schools in Saskatchewan, www.sarcanschool.ca. It’s a new portal for all things school recycling. After registering for SARCAN School, users can track the amount of containers their school recycles - impact calculators determine how much cash the school has collected, and how much waste has been diverted. It measures both in amount of material diverted and also greenhouse gas emissions saved. It’s a new and interactive way to engage teachers and students to recycle beverage containers such as milk cartons, juice boxes and pop cans. Users can also order beverage container recycling bins and book depot tours through the website. The maximum amount of bins a school can order is currently three, but we are already looking at expanding this option, as it has been very popular right out of the gate. The new website also features a contest, The
Great Carton Search, sponsored by the Carton Council of Canada. The contest runs from October of 2018 right through to May 31, 2019. If you know any teachers or educators in Saskatchewan, please encourage them to enter the contest. There will be five prizes of $1,000 - three for elementary schools and two for high schools. Any school in the province is welcome to register! There was a launch event for the new website that took place on October 15th, 2018 at Westmount School in Saskatoon. SARCAN partnered with
the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council to have a kick-off event for Waste Reduction Week in Canada. In attendance was Mr. Fred Bradshaw, MLA for Carrot River Valley, Naomi Mihilewicz, Communications Coordinator for the Saskatchewan Waste Reduction Council, as well as Sean Homenick and Sydney Smith from SARCAN. The kids played a recycling relay race and they all looked so cute dressed up in their SARCAN aprons and gloves! The goal of the game was to separate all of the beverage containers that SARCAN recycles, and bring them to be counted. After they were counted, they were sorted further at the “depot” we set up using bag stands. After the containers were counted, the orders were tallied and the kids were paid in SARCAN fun-bucks (not legally binding currency). Everyone enjoyed the morning and we had a great time recycling with the kids at Westmount School. Fall 2018 15
30 Years of Crushin Throughout the summer and fall of 2018, SARCAN depots across the province celebrated 30 years of recycling in Saskatchewan! Depots were invited to participate in local events and/or host customer appreciation days. Everyone wore their new purple t-shirts and gray Crushing It bunny hugs! Some depots hosted community events, some hosted treats and coffee, and everyone decorated! It was so much fun to see all of the unique talents at the depots and the different ways people chose to celebrate. Congratulations to everyone in SARCAN-land for 30 years of Crushing It!

Depot News Kitty and Lionel: The Talk of the Town in Fort Qu’Appelle The Fort Qu’Appelle depot has had a lot of really good ups this year! We got a new forklift, and we had great feedback from customers. We made it through the summer months short staffed for all of August. The town paper came in and wrote a story about the cats that live at the depot, year after year the cats are a big hit. We have people come in just to see the cats. They get food, treats, toys, and, most importantly, love from the customers. Staff member Denni just turned 19 on September 26. Denni has been a returning employee since he was 16; he came to us from a school program he graduated last year. Brook is a new hire this summer. (See their picture in the new hires section, p. 26). Right now the depot is waiting for hockey season to come. We all cheer for different teams so it’s always fun talking about who’s team will win the cup every year. Winning in Wynyard
Wynyard SARCAN’s exciting journey started in January, when we moved to our new location and brand new building! The twists and turns of a new facility has kept us on our toes. Staff and customers alike have had a learning curve that has been an interesting ride.
A whirlwind of a year led to a new location and new faces at the Wynyard depot, located in central Saskatchewan, off the Yellowhead Highway
We held our Grand Opening on April 5th in affiliation with the Town of Wynyard. The new Wynyard Recycling Center includes a one stop experience for customers in our area who want to recycle their items next door or come in and see us at SARCAN. We held a joint celebration with officials from both facilities presenting information

to the public and officially cutting the ribbon. SARCAN hosted a cake and coffee celebration following a presentation and tours. We had all hands on deck to help with this event. Casual staff members Jessie and Jessica, our university student Nadine and full time staff Jennifer, joined manager Maureen Lindal, and former manager Larry Lindal to celebrate this wonderful day. Customers have responded very positively to our new big and beautiful customer service area. Recycling in our community and surrounding area has been consistent with high volumes. In fact, we have increased our staff
Depot News to keep up with our large intake. In February we hired Christian, a student staff member, to help keep our depot running smoothly through the winter months. Spring weather brought our depot an increase in containers. Thankfully it also brought us the return of our university student, Nadine. She returned to our team for her second spring and summer with us here at Wynyard SARCAN. Warm weather allowed for our new depot to get a few finishing touches. The construction of steps and a railing leading to our front door were a welcome addition. A sidewalk was installed running the length of the entire joint facility, making public access available to all customers to both sides of the Recycling Center. We kicked off our summer months with a Customer Appreciation Day in June. Our “Crushing it for 30 Years� themed celebration included cake and coffee and a door prize. For your younger recycling enthusiasts, we had freezies and a colouring contest with prizes for the winners. Summer heat brought another increase in recycling volumes and another staff member joined our team. Paige was hired as our in July.
The summer months also brought the paving crew to town, and our depot was under improvement construction again! Our location has the loading dock area and staff parking lot paved. The customers and staff are really enjoying these improvements. The whirlwind of action with improvements, staff training, large customer volumes and staff holidays kept us hopping through the all too short summer months. September began our journey into fall as we sent our university student back to the city and welcomed yet another staff member to our depot! We hired Jade to become a member of our busy team during the daytime hours while our local student staff members are in school. A welcome addition, indeed as customers clean up and prepare for the winter months! At the end of September, volunteers and staff were on hand to support a Bottle Drive held by the local skating club. We had a wonderful response from community for this event. Rosthern Depot’s Ross Deptuch Receives Award Ross Deptuch was named a Hometown Hero by Valley Action Abilities, the SARC Member Agency that operates the Rosthern SARCAN depot, on October 23, 2018. The Hometown Hero award recognizes Rosthern locals, who, “through their tireless work and humble example, make our town a better place to be.” Ross celebrated 30 years of employment at SARCAN, amongst his SARCAN pioneer colleagues, who were receiving the inaugural 30 year awards. In addition to the 30 years Ross has worked at SARCAN, he has been a volunteer with the Rosthern Fire Department even longer! Whether training emergency workers on how to be effective and stay safe fighting fires and performing rescues, or informing the public about the value and practical details of recycling at SARCAN, Ross is an educator who contributes to the quality of life in the Rosthern area. Depot News Indian Head Welcomes Sherri Racette Back to Work We would like to welcome back Sherri Racette after her illness. We tried to make it a happy return by making a poster with balloons and ribbon, and stuffing her locker full of balloons as well. Our depot had two new hires in May, and we would like to welcome Megan Meyer and Kelly McRee. Both are casual employees, both hard workers, quick learners and have completed all the Aspire online courses! Way to go girls!! Speaking of Aspire… I just love that all the training that is online! It makes it so much easier to train new employees as well as re-training current ones. Especially having the tablet to use as well. At first I was hesitant about the POS system, Drop & Go, and all the computer knowledge that was attached to email, Aspire and Connect, but I would never want SARCAN to go back to the old way. All these new improvements make life so much easier!!! We have had a few Drop & Go orders, definitely helps to learn the system when you do them more often. Shannon has a good recipe for stuffy noses: put a couple drops of Eucalyptus Essential Oil on the palm of your hands and rub together then cup over your nose and inhale, do the same over your mouth. Really clears up a stuffy nose and chest!! Shannon loves her oils and is well educated with what oils are good for specific ailments, we all get nursed by her when we don’t feel good! Thanks, Shannon. We bid farewell to Allison Hamilton, she is moving onto new adventures. We will miss her! We receive many tips (not eating yellow snow isn’t one of them, lol) from customers for the service we provide, so to treat the staff we go to our local dairy mart. It is only a few steps from the depot, and is very yummy, especially on a hot summer day. We also buy pop and munchies (sometimes healthy) to keep at the depot for coffee breaks. It’s nice to know that our customers appreciate our service and to hear it all the time! Kevin, our long term casual employee, likes to treat us to donuts, long johns, and cookies as well. He is so kind and always thinks of his fellow co-workers. We appreciate him but not sure if my hips do! -Lisa Riehl, Indian Head Depot Supervisor Fall 2018 23
Teamwork and Fun in Saskatoon Hello from Saskatoon Processing, Well we made it, and what a summer it was! The returns were up and the trailers were coming in like crazy! I am so proud of the crew at the Saskatoon Processing plant! They just buckled down and got the trailers unloaded and never once did I hear that we cannot do it or keep up. Everyone from the front to the back, you all did a great job! I think of our staff and several words come to mind. TEAMWORK, HARDWORKING, HELPFUL, RELENTLESS, COMPASSIONATE, SUPPORTIVE, PRIDE, CHEERFUL, HAPPY, SMILING, and FUN. I could go on! But wait, I just described all of SARCAN! WE ALL ROCK! Take time to pat yourselves on the back! We had a big year at Employee Recognition Day. We had 10 staff attend and be recognized, those getting awards were: 5 year – Bernie Steigel, Kelvin Britton. 10 year – Jerry Motelaga, Craig Miller, Charles Andruga. 15 year – Kris Ewanus. 20 year – Gus Schindel, Trevor Jones. 30 year – Robert Kryzanowski. Retiree – Doug Runge of 27 years. That is 152 years of service from just the Saskatoon processing plant. They have all contributed in recycling a lot of pounds! Congratulations! Derrick Palmer and Mike Siwy went to Nova Scotia to play in the Nationals in slow-pitch for Special Olympics, and came back with the gold medal! Way to go boys! We are all so proud! Stay warm and be safe this winter!

Soccer and Silver Medals in Regina Good Day SARCAN Nation!! Dwight Rieger and Zane Lauritsen of Regina Processing participated in the Special Olympics Regina Raiders Prairie Invitational Soccer Tournament in June of 2018. The Raiders team won the silver medal in the Competitive Division. On top of that, Dwight was honored with Most Valuable Player and Zane was given the True Grit award. The Raiders team also traveled to Antigonish, Nova Scotia, to participate in the Special Olympic Summer Games (July 30 – August 4). They had an amazing experience as they went up against the best teams from across the country (BC, Alberta, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan). The opponents were very skilled and talented, but the Raiders gave it their all in every game. The Raiders played eight games in four days, which took its toll on the players’ bodies. Mother Nature didn’t cooperate weather-wise, a heat wave saw the temperatures in the high 30’s every day, with extremely high humidity, the temperatures were in the 40’s. The Raiders played in the Bronze medal game against Alberta but came out on the losing end.
