Jean Vanier Receives Templeton Prize Jean Vanier, the founder of L’Arche, an international network of communities where people with and without intellectual disabilities live and work together as peers, has been awarded the 2015 Templeton Prize. The award was announced on March 11, 2015, in London, England.

Valued at £1.1 million (about $1.7 million USD), the Templeton Prize is one of the world’s largest annual awards given to an individual. It honours a living person who has made exceptional contributions to affirming life’s spiritual dimension, whether through insight, discovery, or practical works. Vanier joins a distinguished group of 44 former recipients, including Mother Teresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and the Dalai Lama.

At L’Arche, people are encouraged to enter into mutual relationships, where those who help and those who are helped are transformed by their encounters with each other.

Harvest Pie Company: A New Venture at Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop

The Weyburn Wor-Kin Shop Corp. is pleased to announce that they have purchased the Harvest Pie Company – an established local business with a successful history of marketing frozen pies, fillings and fruit spreads throughout Saskatchewan.

The company produces 8” frozen pies in four flavours – Saskatoon, Wild Blueberry, Rhubarb and Apple; as well as 250ml fruit spreads in Saskatoon, Wild Blueberry, Strawberry/Rhubarb and Apple Chutney flavours.

The purchase was made possible through the support of Community Futures Sunrise and their Entrepreneurs with Disabilities program.

LEAP Program Wraps up First Year We are quickly approaching the end of our first year of LEAP – an exciting training program for current and up-and-coming leaders in the nonprofit sector. June will see the last LEAP session for the 2015 graduating class.

Celebrate Success banquet on October 21, 2015 in Regina. In addition to being acknowledged, graduates of LEAP will also receive a discount on future in-person SARC training events; one of the many benefits of being a LEAP Graduate.

Thank you to our Members for committing to leadership excellence and seeing the value in this program with both full program and individual session registrations.

Throughout the LEAP year, learners gave us a great deal of feedback on what they like, including: • Practical Information • Discussing real-life examples of things that happen in the nonprofit sector • Peer-group style learning, working with others who are experiencing the same types of issues and being able to network The new LEAP year will begin in September 2015 with full program registration opening in June. Watch for that notice and information on funding support available.

CBO Sustainability Project Update In early April, the Provincial Partnership sent an update letter to the SARC Membership on the Community-Based Organization (CBO) Sustainability Project, the multi-year plan to create long-term stability, healthy growth, and effective service delivery for CBOs that deliver residential and day program services for individuals with intellectual disabilities and critical in- home support, residential, and counseling services for children in need of protection and their families.

The Task Teams created to work toward the recommendations as outlined in MNP’s final report, consisting of representatives from the Ministry, SARC, and CBOs funded by Community Living Service Delivery and Child and Family

Programs, include: • Outcomes Based Funding • Shared Services • Governance • Quality Assurance • Attraction, Retention and Compensation Four of the five task teams have already started their work; the Attraction, Retention, and Compensation Task Team will begin their work later this year and will be informed by the work of the others. Thank you to the SARC Members who have agreed to contribute their time and talent to these task teams; we expect that opportunities for additional Membership involvement/consultation

will unfold through each Task Team’s work plan development.

The task teams will be setting several meeting dates throughout the 20152016 year. As the work progresses, the Provincial Partnership will keep the SARC Membership informed. SARC Members can also find these updates in SARC’s Online Resource Area under the tab “CBO Sustainability Project”. Individuals from SARC Regular and Associate Member Agencies that have Management or Board access to the online resources can view this area. If your organization has Board Members that you would like to sign up, please send their names and email addresses to the SARC Office.

COR and Campus for All Partnership results in more jobs for people of all abilities

Just over a year ago, Campus For All (CFA) and Creative Options Regina (COR) partnered to address high unemployment rates for people with disabilities. Jeff Raymond, a dynamic, young political science instructor was added to the team. Although Jeff had no experience in supported employment, he has proven to be an excellent fit within the team. His energy and enthusiasm are never-ending.

Early on, 12 potential job seekers were identified from the individuals served by CFA and COR. A modest objective was set for the first year based on meeting a 30% employment outcome. This objective was set based on research into North American standards.

The partnership has achieved results beyond its wildest dreams, having found employment for 14 individuals and engaging employers with exciting results. For example, one young female student, supported by CFA, started working at Farm Credit Corporation (FCC) before she even graduated. She is the second person to find employment directly upon leaving university.

Job tasks were identified by FCC and COR to create a permanent position with the same benefits and salary as others.

Through the discovery process, it was identified that she would excel in an office surrounding with supportive co-workers.

Her strengths were based in data entry, filing and general office duties, so the position at FCC was an excellent job match.

The partnership has worked extensively with SaskTel as well, creating positions for two individuals and gaining strong praise from SaskTel’s former Manager of Corporate Diversity, Kevan McBeth. McBeth said, “Over the last year, the 4 to 40 initiative has taken what I believe to be an innovative approach to engaging employers – educating interested organizations on the positive impacts of employing people with cognitive disabilities through strong social media messaging, videos and endorsements of participating companies who have seen the benefits of supported employment.”

Year two is just beginning and the objectives are even loftier, but both COR and CFA believe the sky is the limit when it comes matching job seekers with the right employer!

Food Safe Training

By purchasing enrollment keys for the National Food Safety Training Program (NFSTP) through SARC, your organization can save $8.00 per staff person – a savings of 20% from purchasing the keys directly from NFSTP. The enrollment keys are available for SARC Members at a rate of $32. This key enables an employee to complete the online portion of the Food Safety Training Program.

A proctor is required to supervise exams; you can train an employee to be a proctor (very simple process), or hire an in person or online proctor.

Positive Behaviour Support Training Have you ever thought, “why is he/ she doing that?” when someone you support is displaying challenging behaviour?

The truth is that the individual you support is trying to communicate something with you. Understanding that behaviour is communication is imperative for anyone that supports individuals with disabilities. After you understand that, then you can focus on why. Only when you start to address this question can you come up with positive solutions.

SARC’s new online Positive Behaviour Support Training Program is available 24/7 in a convenient online platform.

The program aims to meet a variety of learning styles as it is narrated and includes videos that allow the user to follow an individual and understand the analysis of the behaviour.

This program was developed in consultation with the Ministry of Social Services, and it has been approved by the Ministry as equivalent to its CLSD Level II training. So, you can now have your

employees trained right at home on an as-needed basis.

The program is available in licenses based on size of employee base:

The training takes approximately three hours to complete and consists of three modules that focus on understanding behaviour and the function it serves for the individual. The learner will gain understanding in the following areas:

This online program can be used for either independent learning or group learning (within an organization, an employee with training duties takes the training in advance and then facilitates group discussion).

Medication Assistance Training Program On March 23, 2015, SARC launched a Medication Assistance Training Program. This program came to be after numerous years of consulting with SARC Members and the Social Services and Health Ministries.

This convenient training program is an excellent option to supplement your organization’s policies and procedures on medication assistance.

The course content for the Medication Assistance Training Program includes: • Policies • Terminologies, abbreviations, labeling and packaging • Roles and responsibilities • Safe receiving, storage, repackaging,

transport and disposal • The “6 Rights” • Preparing and assisting with medication • Documenting and observing • Medication errors To get started with this program, an agency’s executive director (or designate) needs to complete a one-time registration process to receive an agency user code, which is then provided to the employee by the agency. The employee then completes the online registration process to receive his/her individual password via email (each employee accessing the program will require an email address).

Once the employee has the password he/ she can access the program 24/7 from any computer. It will take the employee approximately three hours to complete.

After successfully completing the program, employees simply print off their certificate and take it to their supervisor for proof of completion. The supervisor can then test skills in medication assistance.

The program is available at the cost of $79.99 per employee for SARC Members.

The Non Member rate is $104.99.

Components of Cyber Risk Management If your organization stores data and information digitally, you should have a cyber risk management program that addresses prevention, disclosure, crisis management and insurance coverage in the event of a data breach. Good cyber risk management requires the planning and execution of all four of these components.

Develop Strategies to Prevent a Data Breach

Your data breach prevention strategies may include encrypting all devices used by your employees, such as laptops, tablets and smartphones. Encrypting these devices will prevent unauthorized access if a device is lost or stolen. Unencrypted devices are often not covered by a cyber liability policy, so make sure you know whether you need to encrypt the devices or not.

Your strategies may also include educating employees about phishing and pharming scams.

Remind them not to click on anything that looks suspicious or seems too good to be true.

Analyze your cyber risks from three different perspectives: technology, people and processes. This risk assessment will give you a clear picture of potential holes in your security.

Revisit and revise your plan regularly, because new risks arise often.

Know Your Disclosure Responsibilities

If you experience a data breach, you may be legally required to notify certain people. As an example, if your company is publicly traded, guidelines issued by the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) make it clear that you must report cyber security incidents to stockholders—even when your company is only at risk of an incident.

The CSA advises timely, comprehensive and accurate disclosure about risks and events that would be important for an investor or client to know. It’s important to evaluate what information and how much detail should be released.

Notifying a broad base when it is not required could cause unnecessary concern for those who have not been affected by the breach.

Some extreme cases of a data breach may cause you to go further than just assessing and disclosing the information. You may have to destruct or alter data depending on its sensitivity.

Your Crisis Management and Response Plan Preparedness is key when developing your cyber risk management program. When you experience a data breach, you need to be prepared to respond quickly and appropriately.

This is where your crisis management and response plan come into play.

Determine when and how the breach occurred, what information was obtained and how many individuals were affected. Then assess the risks you face because of the data breach and how you will mitigate those risks.

While managing a crisis, let those affected know what actions you are taking, but also be sure you’re not disclosing too much information. It’s a delicate balance. Focus on improving future actions—this will restore trust.

Your lawyers, risk managers and IT department should work together to create and refine your plan. Everyone should be on board and know their responsibilities when a breach happens.

Telemiracle and SARCAN 2015 Melfort Staff “Ring Those Phones” Live at the Show This year, SARCAN offered a special prize to the “depot choice” winner of our Christmas depot decorating contest: a trip to Saskatoon to experience Telemiracle live in person.

The winners of the inaugural “depot choice” category (as chosen by fellow SARCAN depots across the province) this year was Melfort.

The depot got to pick three staff members to travel to Saskatoon on Sunday, March 8th, for the afternoon portion of Telemiracle. The depot chose to send John Barks, Linda Remonde and Carol Campbell. When they arrived, they learned all about the behind-the-scenes part of the Telemiracle broadcast. The day started with “phone school” where they learned how to answer phones and take donations. Then they were off to the stage where they answered phones during the afternoon’s live performances.

The SARCAN group was fortunate enough to be on stage during the farewell tribute to Bob McGrath. Bob has been to every Telemiracle but one since the iconic Saskatchewan fundraiser began. The on-air personalities sang songs from Sesame Street and played a retrospective video of Bob’s time at Telemiracle. It was tearful and heartwarming to say goodbye to someone who has been synonymous with Telemiracle and Saskatchewan since the 1970s!

After a fast-paced hour and a half of answering phones, the SARCAN crew was able to take a behind the scenes tour to see the moving parts that contribute to the success of Telemiracle. The venue is full of Kinsmen volunteers who work tirelessly, night and day, to make the operation run smoothly. Needless to say, it was an awe-inspiring experience to watch the magic happen.

The depots across the province did a wonderful job of selling Helping Hands and doing fundraisers throughout the months of January and February. Our grand total was $46, 328.53!

In Saskatoon and Regina, the depots were treated to a surprise visit from Telemiracle Teddy, who came to check out all of the lovely decorations and designs made out of Helping Hands. They saw Kelly Keith and crew from the Saskatoon West depot, as well as Joan Prentice and crew from the Saskatoon North depot.

The Saskatoon South depot had their Helping Hands hung like garland across the ceiling. It looked beautiful!

In Regina, local musician and Telemiracle on-air personality, Jeffrey Straker, came to some of the depots for a visit as well. He is pictured here at the Rochdale depot, checking out the beautiful hot-air balloon the depot staff created with their Helping Hands.

Depots across the province showed their spirit by making creative displays out of Helping Hands. Humboldt made a big heart from Helping Hands. Congratulations to everyone who participated in Telemiracle!

SARCAN in the Classroom New Education Resources Available

SARCAN’s new education materials include lesson plans for teachers, an interactive tactile kit, a virtual tour video and resources for depots to conduct tours with schools and groups in their communities.

For Educators SARCAN worked with education consultants to create lesson plans for kids from kindergarten to grade 8 to learn about recycling, environmental protection and social responsibility through lesson plans in the areas of math, science, fine arts, language arts, social studies, music and more! We are currently working with School Boards across the province to have our interactive tactile kits available as a resource in the classroom.

For Students SARCAN’s website now features a video that takes the viewer on a tour of our depots and shows what happens behind the scenes at our processing plants. The viewer can find out what happens to materials that get recycled at SARCAN and what kind of new products the materials get turned into.

For Depots We have versions of the interactive tactile kits for depots, as well as newly developed depot tour guides and presentation folders with the latest information about SARCAN, including process flows and charts for what happens to materials after they are returned to SARCAN.
