Session A: Reimagining Governance: How Nonprofits Can Design Governance That Works for Them, Erin Kang

Governance is a complex ecosystem with many interrelated parts. Yet, there's a tendency to over-focus on one aspect when it comes to governance: the board of directors. This hands-on session will explore the Governance Ecosystem, unpack some common assumptions that keep us locked into old ways of working, and visualize how organizations could redesign governance to work for their unique circumstances. Participants will be introduced to a suite of tools and resources that will be available in the newly launched Reimagining Governance Lab, a virtual hub for governance innovation, and have a chance to dig in to some of the materials with peers.

Session B: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Fundamentals for Managers, Gilary Guzman

Join Gilary Guzman from Canadian Equality Consulting as she talks about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and how leaders can ensure that their organization has meaningful DEI practices in place. Attendees will be provided with tangible tools to assist them in creating or updating their DEI practices.

Session A: Reimagining Governance: How Broader Trends/Forces May Be Impacting Your Governance Design, Erin Kang

There are many broad trends and forces that arc through the nonprofit ecosystem that directly impact how nonprofits and charities do their governance work. This generative, interactive session will present the four components of governance design (structures, processes, people, and culture), and explore how they are impacted by those broader trends and forces. Attendees will reflect with peers on how these impacts may be showing up in their organizations, and what shifts could be made to better respond to them.

Session B: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and Workplace Accommodations, Milad Alishahi

Diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) are terms that are becoming increasingly common in Canadian organizations. With increasing awareness of systemic social and economic inequalities as well as the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion to the success and wellbeing of employers and their workers, many organizations have begun to formalize DEI strategies and implement programs and training in an effort to address some of these inequalities in their own workplaces. As with many initiatives that employers may wish to implement, there are a number of legal considerations that may influence how organizations move forward with their DEI mandates. DEI initiatives raise a number of legal considerations, primarily in the human rights law and privacy law context. Join Milad Alishahi from MLT Aikins as he discusses how DEI fits within human rights and anti-discrimination law generally as well as DEI topics that have begun to appear more commonly in human rights case law. During this session there will be discussions regarding the specific legal requirements to keep in mind when implementing DEI initiatives, both from an occupational health and safety and privacy perspective.

Attendees will be provided with tangible tools to assist them in creating or updating their DEI practices.

Session B: The 7 Points of Resistance: A Plan for Overcoming Resistance to Change, Peter de Jager

In this interactive session Peter will talk about how different people deal with change and how to overcome their resistance and objections to change.

All objections to a change are legitimate, normal, and valid. As managers, it may not appear to be a positive thing when employees are resistant to change initiatives. Machiavelli knew this and stated it clearly, “There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things.

For the innovator has enemies in all those who profit by the old order, and only lukewarm defenders in all those who would profit by the new order, this lukewarmness arising partly from fear of their adversaries … and partly from the incredulity of mankind, who do not truly believe in anything new until they have had actual experience of it.”

This session will cover the most common objections to change, and provide time for attendees to bring forward their experiences.

Come and join a facilitated discussion and networking opportunity with the Person-Centred Culture Committee while you eat your lunch. This session is optional; however, there will be the opportunity to connect, discuss, and share ideas on person-centred leadership.

CLOSING KEYNOTE ADDRESS

THE 7 QUESTIONS OF CHANGE The presentation is highly interactive, thought provoking, and guaranteed to generate good, deep, discussion about how change is, and should be, implemented in an organization. It is also, unavoidably fun. This session will address what we must do to bring about a 'change initiative’ as smoothly as possible. In short – we must communicate. How much, and for how long do we do this? For as long as it takes. Change communication isn’t something that stops and starts; it’s a constant activity before, during, and after any ’change initiative’.

This isn’t exactly news, but where an issue sometimes arises is when people begin to ask, “What exactly should we communicate?” To answer that question and address the psychology of the ‘change challenge’, you will need to ask AND answer the following questions: 1. WHY? – Why is this particular change necessary now?

2. WIIFM? (What’s in it for me) – Why is this question important even though it’s NOT a team question?

3. MONDAY? – What exactly will we be doing differently tomorrow?

4. WON’T? – What won’t change?

5. MIGHT? – What might go wrong, and what are our plans to mitigate that?

6. WILL? – What will be difficult and how do we work together to make it easier?

7. SIGNPOSTS? – How will we know we’re making progress?
