5 WICKED QUESTIONS
UNDERSTANDING THE PAST TO CHART THE FUTURE OF SUPPORTS AND SERVICES
Bruce MacDonald
Organizations that have been around for 50 years have learned to adapt and change. But what is coming next? Bruce will kick off the conference by exploring five “wicked” questions that will look at upcoming trends affecting charities and nonprofits. Success of this session will be measured by the volume of discussion over coffee as delegates continue to debate these questions and issues!
About Bruce: Who would have thought that operating carnival games and rides would lead to a career in social good? Nobody, really. Well – over 30 years later, Bruce is still at it. From having served as CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada for ten years and prior to that as the organization’s Vice-President of Marketing, Bruce has led major change initiatives and developed long and innovative partnerships with corporations and other charities. A wide and varied career, working with different parts of the sector has lead him to Imagine Canada – working with young people, older adults, sports and recreation and community service clubs. Bruce holds a Bachelor of Commerce in Sports Administration, a Masters in Management in the Voluntary Sector and a Guinness Book of World Records.
Joseph Macbeth
As advocates, families, providers, and policy makers find themselves at a critical point in shifting support models for people experiencing disability toward individual autonomy and self-direction, this keynote offers a chance to reflect on how the strength of advocacy led the community living movement over the past 40 years. We will also reflect on the changes coming to our system that are driven by funders, families and people experiencing disability, and how service organizations must implement continuous quality improvement practices in their approaches to empowering people to lead selfdirected lives.
About Joseph: Joseph M. Macbeth is the
Executive Director at the NADSP, and has worked in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities for 35 years – beginning as a Direct Support Professional. Macbeth is recognized as a national leader in the advocacy movement to recognize direct support as a profession and is a highly sought after speaker on the workforce challenges that affect the disability system.

DAY ONE - CONCURRENT SESSIONS Session 1 (1:45 pm - 4:00 pm)
A: TRANSFORMATION LEADERSHIP IN A NONPROFIT ENVIRONMENT Jocelyn Berard
In the complex and ever changing nonprofit industry, effective leadership skills are a critical success factor. Transformational leadership encompasses many effective leadership practices and behaviours we already know, but requires they be better integrated to make the theory more applicable. In this session, we will demystify this highly critical aspect of leadership and, through concrete examples, illustrate why it is such a differentiator at the executive level. This session will include various skill practices and will touch on presence, personal brand, leading your team with purpose and vision, social intelligence, and growing others on your team. The lessons learned from this session will guide your leadership journey as you navigate the complex nonprofit industry.
About Jocelyn: Jocelyn is the Senior Vice-President and National Practice Leader, Organizational Psychology, at Optimum Talent. Jocelyn has extensive Canadian and International experience in the areas of Human Resources and Business Management in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Asia, in a variety of industries such as telecommunications, auto manufacturing, health care, retail, aerospace and banking. His interventions focus on talent management, especially in the area of leadership assessment and development, performance management, succession management and selection best practices. Fluently bilingual in French and English, Jocelyn holds undergraduate degrees in psychology and human resources, a master’s degree in industrial/organizational psychology and an executive MBA. Jocelyn’s new book, Accelerating Leadership Development, focuses on leadership assessment, leadership development and succession management.
B: CEO SUCCESSION: THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS
Deryck Williams
With 30 years working exclusively with charities and nonprofit organizations, Deryck has witnessed almost every type of CEO succession. In this session, he will share stories of success and failure, insights and lessons learned, and provide you with take aways that challenge conventional thinking. Whether you are a Board Director who will have to make a call on a new CEO, a staff or volunteer who will experience the result, or a leader who aspires (or should aspire) to the CEO role; expect challenging food for thought and action.

D: ACCELERATING SYSTEM CHANGE WITH COLLECTIVE IMPACT AND AUTHENTIC ENGAGEMENT
Sylvia Cheuy
Collaboration – with funders, allies, and community partners – is a significant part of how our work gets done these days. But, not all forms of collaborators are the same. Collective impact is a disciplined form of multi-sector collaboration that is demonstrating powerful, largescale results on an array of complex social and environmental issues. The ability to engage multiple sectors and perspectives to think together is central to creating a robust collective impact initiative and a foundational practice of community change. Authentic engagement of both content and context experts is foundational to effective multisector collaboration. This interactive session will introduce you to the Collective Impact Framework and provide tools to ensure your collective impact initiative generates a robust, and shared, action plan for advancing system change.

E: 5 KEYS TO LEADING CHANGE AND BUILDING PERFORMANCE Dan Gaynor
If high performing teams are agile and adaptable, how do the best leaders develop teams that fit this description? What distinguishes them from so many others that seem to struggle with even the most basic new initiatives? During this session you will discover that the most satisfying and successful teams have always shared five key characteristics that enable them to navigate change successfully, and outperform others. Along the way, we’ll visit the importance of relationships, and discuss the eight keys to providing direction well. We’ll take an in depth look at accountability (what it is, why it matters, both corporately and individually, and how to get more of it), and we’ll look at how and when to use positional authority to promote and protect three essential aspects of team life. We’ll look at how to overcome the buy-in challenge and a powerful approach to decision making.
About Dan: For as long as he can recall, Dan has had a passion for building high performance teams through skillful leadership. He entered the workforce by following his father’s footsteps into the newspaper business as an Advertising Sales Representative. Dan’s first leadership role was as one of five Sales Supervisors at a large daily newspaper, leading six Sales Representatives and a Sales Administrator. As his career progressed, Dan led teams through several challenging situations, including integrations, turnarounds and labour unrest. Dan has led in non-union and unionized environments. Each time, he appointed the members of leadership teams with care and worked tirelessly at helping them become better, more skillful leaders. Dan believed then, as he does now, that every team reflects its leadership. As leadership gets better, corporate performance improves. In 2003, Dan formed Gaynor Consulting. After, fifteen years of working with a wide variety of clients, it has only enriched his own leadership development and given him a broader base of experience to draw upon.

DAY TWO - CONCURRENT SESSIONS Session 2 (9:00 am - 12:00 pm)
F: THE GOLDEN RULE Patrick O’Reilly
This session will show participants how we each tend to have a particular leadership style with which we’re comfortable and that we bring to our teams; often based on the Golden Rule – treat others the way you want to be treated. In this session Patrick helps leaders see how this is harming them, and their team members. Sure, we want to maintain respect and kindness as a basis for how we treat our staff and how we want to be treated – but beyond that, we’re overlooking important nuances. You will learn what style you bring to your leadership based on how you see the world, and how some people will truly see the world differently, what each individual employee may be looking for, how to figure it out and perhaps most importantly, how you can genuinely, honestly and comfortably adapt your style to each employee.
About Patrick: Patrick O’Reilly is Founder and President of Padraig
Coaching & Consulting Inc., a growing coaching and leadership development company based in Winnipeg, with certified executive coaches in eight cities in Canada and the U.S. He is certified in executive coaching and specialized in helping those who lead others to excel in their roles and dive into new roles. As a former Crown Corporation CEO who rose through the executive ranks learning on the fly to lead people, Patrick has lived the life of his audiences. He sees the world through their eyes. He has had enormous wins and has made the mistakes they’re trying to avoid. Patrick has spoken to diverse audiences ranging from a small mastermind group of executives to large convention centres, from hard working front-line service people, to heads of government and even royalty. Patrick’s experience has seen him presenting across Canada and around the world from Iceland to Australia, Ghana to China, with stops along the way as diverse as the 2010 Olympic Winter Games and a triennial global gathering of ICOM, the United Nation’s International Council of Museums and a TEDx Talk on why the Golden Rule is Wrong.
DAY TWO - CONCURRENT SESSIONS Session 3 (1:00 pm - 2:30 pm)
G: VISION, MISSION AND CULTURE: THE “INSPIRATION TEAM-BUILDING FORCE” Dan Gaynor
The “inspiration team-building force” means to provoke others to creative effort. This is what the most successful leaders do as they energize their teams in pursuit of a vision for something worth accomplishing. In this session, we will look at the differences between vision

DAY TWO - CONCURRENT SESSIONS Session 3 (1:00 pm - 2:30 pm)
and mission and the roles each play in team building. We’ll take an in depth look at how to build a better, more successful and more satisfying culture starting with the reality that every team’s performance is largely a product of its culture. This is why the best leaders are architects of culture, while so many others are victims of it. During this session, you will discover how to make vision, mission, and culture the “inspirational team-building forces” they should be. Along the way we’ll visit why vision and mission are essential to motivating the right people, and how leaders use them to create purposeful work. We will have a look at culture and draw the connection between culture and team performance. You will learn about a four step approach to building a better, stronger, and more satisfying workplace culture
H: THE 80% SOLUTION Joseph Macbeth
The 80% Solution: Practical Applications for Hiring, Developing, Keeping and Empowering Direct Support Professionals. “We Have a DSP Problem.” We hear it all of the time. Home and community-based support providers experience a crushingly high percentage of staff turnover, poor morale, and an inability to provide the high quality supports that people experiencing disability and their families want and deserve. How do we fix it? The answer is complex and comprehensive. Approximately 80% of the workforce in organizations that support people experiencing disability is comprised of Direct Support Professionals. They deliver the service and “product” that we all strive to assist people experiencing disability to lead fulfilling lives in the community. This session will describe an organizational cultural change system to focus agency culture to one that fortifies and bolsters the development and recognition of Direct Support Professionals.
I: COLLABORATIVE GOVERNANCE AND BACKBONE STRUCTURES Sylvia Cheuy
One of the challenges of effective collaboration is reaching agreement amongst the partners in the governance and decision-making of their shared work. This session will provide an overview of the unique governance challenges that multi-sector collaboratives face, showcase different backbone structures, and profile strategies and tools that can be used to deal effectively with the multiple levels of accountability implicit in collaborative work. The session will also provide ample time for dialogue to explore the relationship between this context and attendees’ own work.
