They had common concerns about the challenges related to parenting children affected by prenatal exposure to alcohol. There was an obvious absence of services and supports to individuals and families affected by FASD, so they worked together to incorporate what is now known as the FASD Network of Saskatchewan.

In celebration of SARC’s 50th Anniversary, Dave Hingsburger returned to the SARC Spring Conference! Dave is a very popular internationally renowned speaker. When he spoke at the SARC Spring Conference five years ago, he absolutely blew away the audience with his knowledge and humour, so it was the perfect time to have him back. Dave presented two concurrent sessions at this year’s Spring Conference and also closed the conference with his keynote on “Why 50 Years Matters.”

In his closing presentation, Dave shared some of his own experiences as a direct support professional over the years. From his first experiences in the sector just coming out of school and working in an institution, to how people experiencing disability are living now, a lot has changed in terms of the types of supports and services that people receive.

Compared to the services that are offered now, it’s hard to think about the isolated lives people experiencing disability were living decades ago.

Through his stories of people expressing their loneliness in a variety of ways, he explains that these behaviours were a communication on how people experiencing disability envisioned their futures. “You see, fifty years ago, we took people out of the community, we took people out of their homes, we took people out of their families and we placed them away. We placed them at the margins of society. Jailed for the crime of difference. People lived lives of quiet desperation. And yet, with their behaviours and with their means of communication that they had, they let us know what they wanted. They were able to envision a future that we were not able to see. They envisioned their future as being a place of connection, and a place of family, and a place of community, and a place of freedom. They could see the world they wanted, but we at that point had no understanding.”

W hat ’s n e w w i th L e ap?

At the end of May 2018, we finished up our fourth Leap year! The program has seen a lot of growth over the last four years, in particular this year, with some additional updates coming this fall! So, what’s new?

First Financial Responsibilities for Managers Sessions Last year, we introduced a ninth Leap session which focuses on areas related to management’s financial duties. In March 2018, the first sessions were held for our current Leap groups, as well as two additional sessions for our past Leap Graduates. It was exciting to not only introduce this session for the first time to our Leap groups, but to also have our past Leap Graduates come back together and reconnect. It really demonstrated how the program helps nonprofit professionals build strong connections with like-minded leaders from across Saskatchewan.

Citizens All Association Commits to Leadership Excellence We were pleased to work with Citizens All Association to bring Leap to their management team in Moose Jaw. We held in-house sessions for the group of nine managers and supervisors and their team was able to have dynamic discussions about each topic and how it specifically applies to their organization.

We look forward to recognizing this group of Graduates at our Fall Conference in October along with our Saskatoon and Regina groups.

We are pleased to announce that starting in Fall, Leap can be taken in three locations. Leap Learners can take the program in either Saskatoon, Regina, or Melfort! We look forward to seeing new faces join us for this session, as we work toward making Leap more accessible across the province.

Updated Session Branding, Promotions and Engagement The previous Public and Government Relations Leap session has been updated and will now be called “Branding, Promotions, and Engagement”. The session will cover the importance of branding and promotions for nonprofits, including its effect on your organization’s reputation, community relations, and success in fulfilling your mission. The first Branding, Promotions, and Engagement sessions will take place in February 2019!

CO M PA S S – At n o c ost tr a i ni ng On May 30, SARC shared with Members about the addition of the COMPASS Training Package. SARC has been funded at a cost-recovery basis by Community Living Service Delivery (CLSD) to provide training to front-line staff, management and Boards in order to increase the capacity of communitybased organizations (CBOs) and improve recruitment and retention in the sector.

Thanks to this funding, SARC is able to offer the following five programs at no cost to all Regular and Associate SARC Members as well as Affiliate Members with CLSD Funding:

• Med Assist • PART • TLR • Leap • ELEVATE Some limitations do apply for in-person programs. Visit sarclearningcentral.ca/compass for complete details.

SARC looks forward to adding additional programs to COMPASS in the next fiscal year!
