BALLSTON SPA – The New York Air National Guard selected Chief Master Sergeant Amy Giaquinto as its new Command Chief, making her the first woman to hold the position as top enlisted Airman in the 5,800-member New York Air National Guard.

The Ballston Spa resident replaces Command Chief Master Sgt. Richard King, who has held the position since 2010. King has been named to the position

of Command Chief at 1st Air Force, a three-star general officer command responsible for the air defense of the United States.

“I’m honored and humbled to be in this position,” said Giaquinto. “When you get the opportunity to lead Airmen and take care of Airmen and their families, that’s what it’s all about and why I do what I do.”

The Change of Authority ceremony was held at the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs headquartered in Latham on Monday, July 25.

Leo B. Belcher, 50, of Troy was sentenced on Friday, July 22 to two to six years in prison and three years of conditional discharge, after pleading guilty to the felony charge of driving while intoxicated.

Deborah M. Stewart, 48, of Gansevoort was arrested on Tuesday, July 19 and charged with refusal of a prescreen test and the felony charges of driving while intoxicated and driving with a BAC more than .08 of 1 percent.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Dr. Arthur N. Isenberg of Saratoga Springs passed away on Sunday, July 24, 2016. Arthur, son of Fanny and Meyer Isenberg of Ballston Spa, passed away quietly at Saratoga Hospital. He was pre-deceased by his wife of 50 years, Carolyn, and his brother Marvin. Arthur is survived by his three children, Beth Ann, Joshua, and Matthew, and his grandchildren, as well as by his sister, Mimi, and nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Albany Medical School and St. Lawrence University, Arthur worked at Saratoga Hospital for many decades. He touched the lives of not only his family, but many people living in and around the area as a doctor and friend. He loved skiing, hiking, bicycling, kayaking, the horse races, and being with his children and animals. He was a loyal and dear father and friend and will be greatly missed.

Services will be held this Friday, July 29 at Congregation Shaara Tfille, 84 Weibel Avenue in Saratoga Springs at 1p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to local animal rescue or to Congregation Shaara Tfille.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jeanne VanCour, 92, of Saratoga Springs, formerly of Tupper Lake and Ocala, FL, passed on to her eternal reward on Thursday, July 21, surrounded by family. Jeanne was born on the family farm in Lancaster, Ontario to parents Winifred (Leroux) and Aristide Decoeur and raised in Tupper Lake.

Later, she married Paul VanCour and they lived in Ocala, Florida until 1994 when they moved to Saratoga Springs. A very active person, Jeanne excelled at everything she did, especially her culinary and hosting skills. She loved to entertain company and her door was open to everyone. Jeanne made many longlasting friendships wherever she lived.

There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Clement’s Church, 231 Lake Avenue, Saratoga Springs on Monday, August 1, 2016 at 10 a.m. Interment will be in St. Alphonsus Cemetery in Tupper Lake. A memorial service will be held in Tupper Lake at the convenience of the family.

The family requests that any memorial donations be given to The Wesley Health Care Center, Inc., 131 Lawrence Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866, or to the St. Clement’s Parish where Jeanne was a Eucharistic Minister.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Joseph S. McCarthy, Sr., 89, passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 26, 2016 at Saratoga Hospital.

Born on April 16, 1927 in Saratoga Springs, he was the son of the late Michael J. and Elena (Etes) McCarthy. A graduate of Saratoga Springs High School, he served in the US Army from 1945 to 1946. Following his service, Joe attended Bentley College in Boston, MA. He married the love of his life, the former Marie Johnson, and together they raised their family in Saratoga Springs. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by his wife, four brothers and three sisters.

Relatives and friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, July 29, 2016 at the William J. Burke and Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m.

James Thomas Reynolds, Sr SARATOGA SPRINGS — James Thomas Reynolds, Sr, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, July 21, 2016. He was born on September 13, 1938 to the late Joseph P. Reynolds, I, and Charlotte (Edes) Reynolds and is the youngest son of their six children. Of his siblings, Jim is predeceased by his two brothers Joseph P. Reynolds, II, and John Reynolds and survived by his three older sisters Patricia Richards, Mary Boyle, and Catherine “DeDe” Bernatchy.

In addition to his sisters, Jim is survived by his loving wife, Theresa Verro Reynolds, his three children James T. Reynolds, Jr. and Jayne Bedford of Ballston Spa, Elizabeth and Samuel Fitzgerald of Saratoga Springs, and Toni and Keith Vaughan of Aurora, CO, his four grandchildren Michelle and Michael Howard of Charleston, SC, Sean and Jennifer Fitzgerald of Wilder, VT, Angela and Chris Belcher of Denver, CO, and Edmund and Daniece Rainville of Parker, CO, and his two great-grandchildren Kallum Fitzgerald and Natalia Belcher.

Leroy Webb SARATOGA SPRINGS — Leroy Webb, age 85, passed away on Monday, July 25, 2016 at Saratoga Hospital surround by his loving family.

He was born on January 19, 1931 in Chicago, IL, the son of the late Marie Alexander.

Leroy was happily married to his late wife Shirley Webb for 52 years. He was an Inspector for the General Electric Company for 25 years, retiring in 1996. Prior to that he proudly served in the Air Force for 20 years and retired in 1956.

Leroy is survived by his son, Michael Webb and daughters Gina Spencer and Lerae Scott, grandchildren; Ariel Spencer, Camdon Spencer, Evita Spencer, Devon Webb, Dayle Webb, Rayna Scott, and Litany Williams, great-grandchildren; Liam Candara, Aryanna Newman and Zian Scott.

Richard Nowakowski SARATOGA SPRINGS — Richard C. Nowakowski passed in peace Sunday, July 24, 2016 at the age of 81. He was a man that was loved and will be missed and always cherished. Our “Uncle Dick” was an amazing husband, brother, uncle and friend.

Uncle Dick was born on April 28, 1935. He was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Martha Nowakowski and the love of his life, Jean M. “Eenie Beanie” Nowakowski. Uncle Dick is survived by his sister Josephine Neelis, numerous nieces and nephews, several great nieces and nephews as well as great, great-nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to his greatniece Jacqueline D’Alessio, all the doctors, nurses, aides and sitters for providing the best care possible during Uncle Dick’s stay at St. Peter’s Hospital.

Relatives and friends gathered to remember him on Thursday, July 28 2016 at the William J. Burke and Sons/Bussing and Cunniff Funeral Homes, 628 North Broadway, Saratoga Springs.

First Female State Command Chief Continued from front page

As Chief Master Sergeant, Giaquinto said her role was to be the liaison between the Air Commander and unit members for the 109th Airlift Wing at Stratton Air National Guard Base in Scotia.

“Now I’m the liaison between the Commander of the New York Air National Guard and all the men and women of the New York Air National Guard,” said Giaquinto. “That’s five wings, and the Eastern air defense sector. They are the unit that are responsible for air defense east of the Mississippi and over the Washington, D.C. area. My job is to make sure they have what they need to succeed. Morale, training, education, professional development – I make sure that I take care of the Airmen and the families across New York State.”

It is the largest Air National Guard in the United States.

As the Command Chief of the New York Air National Guard, Giaquinto will be the senior enlisted advisor on training and morale of the enlisted force to Major General Anthony German, the Commander of the New York Air National Guard and the Adjutant General of New York. She was selected from a pool of candidates after applying for the position by a board and interview process for the threeto-six-year commitment.

“I was pretty honored to be selected as State Command Chief from the beginning,” said Giaquinto, “but finding out I was the first woman does make it really special. Women are not denied these positions, but they shy away from applying, and hope my being hired will inspire other women to apply to any position here.”

There are currently 1029 women in the New York Air National Guard – 147officers and 882 enlisted, such as Command Chief Giaquinto.

The ceremony was especially meaningful for Giaquinto. “It was awesome,” she said. “My daughter was home [from active duty Air Force], my other daughter sang the National Anthem, my son and husband and family and friends and coworkers were all there.”

Guard Chief Master Sgt. Mark Giaquinto, and her children: Alyssa Giaquinto, a Senior Airman in the Air National Guard; Ashlyn Giaquinto, a college student; and her son Aidan Giaquinto, a middle school student.

Giaquinto joined the New York Air National Guard in 1997 as an Information Manager for the 109th Airlift Wing, and served seven years in the Logistics Readiness Squadron. In the ensuing years, she served information resources, office management, and human resources.

She has been actively involved with the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program, serving as a Victim Advocate and as a Bystander Intervention trainer, and in 2011, Giaquinto was selected as the Personnel Superintendent and became the New York Joint Forces Headquarters Sexual Assault Response CoordinatorAir providing training, guidance and administrative support to the JFHQs and all of the New York

Air National Guard.

In 2009 Giaquinto deployed to Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom. “All members of the Air National Guard deploy to support our nation as well,” said Giaquinto. “I’m always proud of what I do for the Air National Guard, but I felt I needed to deploy over to the desert to serve, because there are so many that are there protecting us and I felt I needed to volunteer and support those men and women in service.”

She was selected as the 109th Airlift Wing Command Chief in 2013. Giaquinto holds an Associate of Applied Science Degree from the Community College of the Air Force. Her awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Air Force Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal.

Compressed Natural Gas Station Opens in Saratoga

by Maureen Werther for Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — American Natural Gas (ANG) held a ribboncutting ceremony Wednesday, July 27, to celebrate the opening of the only compressed natural gas (CNG) filling station between Albany and Montreal. The station is located in the W.J. Grande Industrial Park, 24 Cady Hill Blvd, Saratoga Springs.

The construction of the new filling station means that trucking companies, distribution companies, and other transportation services in the upstate region can begin to reduce their carbon footprint while also cutting energy costs.

Locally, Try-it Distributing – parent company of Saratoga Eagle beverage distribution company – is partnering with ANG to refit its fleet and supply them with CNG. Julia Ingersoll, spokesperson for ANG, said that CNG is changing the conversation about fuel consumption, cost savings and health issues in the community.

“This is a new topic in our region,” she said, “and the environmental and cost impact CNG can have on the upstate region is a significant step in the direction of reduced gasoline and diesel consumption.”

Ingersoll added that any new technology, specifically technology dealing with fuel consumption and energy, requires significant overhauls to existing infrastructure. The new station in Grande Industrial Park provides an important mid-point for haulers traveling north – something that has not been available, preventing companies from making the change to CNG. On a local level, the presence of

the Saratoga Springs station will facilitate a steadier flow of CNG-equipped haulers delivering between Albany and Saratoga.

Andrew West, CEO of ANG, agreed. Through the introduction of CNG, “we are committed to bringing a new type of industry and conversation to our community,” he said.

West called the new station opening a “pivotal moment for our community.” He added that “We launched the company in 2011 with a big idea: if we brought CNG infrastructure to…fleets, then alternative fuel conversions would be easier, more realistic and more sustainable because they would have a partner by their side.”

He added that, five years later, ANG has more than 16 stations and, by the end of the year will have six in New York State alone.

West, 36 years old, is a self-proclaimed entrepreneur, who started his first business while still in high school.

A recent recipient of Albany Business Review’s 40 Under 40 award, West said that he created ANG in order to “make a serious difference” in the region.

In addition to West, those on hand for the ribbon-cutting ceremony included NYS Assemblywoman, Carrie Woerner, LoAnn Sanders, Legislative Aide to NYS Senator Kathy Marchione, Joanne Yepsen, Mayor of Saratoga Springs, Casella Waste System fleet and facilities energy director, Peter Vanderhoof, and Jeff Gicewicz, vice president of corporate holdings for Try-it Distribution.

In her remarks, Yepsen stated, “This project is consistent with the goals of our Climate Smart Task Force, which is working with businesses and residents to identify actions that our community can take to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy-saving strategies

and sustainability practices.”

Vanderhoof noted that the new fueling station would “invigorate the CNG alternative discussion for businesses and the public…making available a cleaner and cheaper alternative to gasoline and diesel that is first and foremost domestically produced.”

Gicewicz said that his company’s corporate sustainability initiative “was redefined with the 2014 conversion of our 43 delivery tractors and the construction of our public-access filling station in Lancaster, NY.” Since then, Gicewicz said his company has been able to align themselves with the “green culture of current and future business partners, while reducing our impact on the environment we share with our families and neighbors.” He added that the ANG team was “a tremendous resource in the endeavor.”

Rounding out the ribboncutting and remarks by attendees was a fueling demonstration by Casella Waste Systems and Try-It Distributing.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — After the announcement of an impending foreclosure on their $499,000 loan, Saratoga Polo Association owners Jim Rossi and Mike Bucci announced they have a potential buyer for the historic grounds. The 42-acre property includes the historic Whitney Polo Field.

The developer talks could not be completed within the bank’s timeline, but the owners are confident the situation is being resolved.

“Timing is everything when

you’re trying to put together a world-class venue the likes of which we’re creating here,” stated Jim Rossi, the Managing Partner at Saratoga Polo Association. “Besides finding development partners who share this vision, it’s the process that included getting approvals in 2008, and being patient until the strength of the economy in the region and Saratoga matured to perfectly create the next phase at Saratoga Polo Association.”

According to the 2008 plans approved by the town of Greenfield, the new resort could include a combination of residences and

commercial uses such as a permanent structure for events, a spa or an inn.

The impending foreclosure will not threaten the 2016 season, including both polo and upcoming weddings and events at the venue.

“We fully expect that our current situation with our financial institution will be resolved in the upcoming weeks and that our development plans will move forward in earnest,” said Rossi.

Details on the potential development partners were unavailable at press time.

My opponent is the handpicked political insider candidate from the New York State Assembly Republicans. As a longtime small business owner (Fischer founded a wireless communications company called Wireless Ventures in 1985) and member of the Town of Ballston’s Planning

Board, Fischer says he is no stranger to adversity and welcomes the challenge. His 2014 bid for Congress against Democrat Paul Tonko was ultimately unsuccessful, but provides some advantages Fischer says give him a competitive edge this time around, like name recognition and insight from district overlap areas.

Change, reform, and a “family first” mentality Fischer says are cornerstones of his campaign. His high priority issues include infrastructure, Common CORE, unfunded government mandates, and pension forfeiture.

Meet the New Deputy Mayor

by Norra Reyes Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — The new deputy mayor of Saratoga Springs may be new to politics, but she is a familiar face among the community. Meg Kelly, formerly the executive director of the Saratoga Children’s Theatre, began her new position Monday, July 25, replacing Joe Ogden, who left the deputy mayor position last month for a position as budget director with SUNY. After thoughtful consideration of about a dozen candidates for the nearly $71,000 a year position, Mayor Joanne Yepsen spent time with three finalists who underwent second interviews, including some “in the field” at local events with the mayor.

“It was a thorough process,” said Yepsen. “I knew what I was looking for, and Meg Kelly was clearly up for the job. With her skills, community connections, and resourcefulness, I know she will be successful.”

Kelly added, “I was looking for a new adventure, a new career path, and this happened at the right time. It’s an honor to be here; I’m very excited.”

In her role at the Saratoga Children’s Theatre, Kelly oversaw the business, grant writing and fundraising for the organization.

Kelly has also served on the City’s

Arts Commission. She has run a successful golf business for over 20 years and was a Class A Member of the LPGA. An author of a golf instructional guide, “Easy Golf,” she also created Saratoga Lifestyles magazine. Kelly is president of Tait Publishing Company. She is foregoing her other interests to focus fully on her new position.

“I have worked with her,” said Yepsen. “She’s extremely confident and gets things done, very direct but has a collegial manner – perfect for this fast-paced office.”

Yepsen said she’s developed a matrix of goals that she’ll be looking to Kelly to help execute. Some of those priorities include setting up a public arts policy; expanding recreational parks and other aspects of sports tourism; continuing next steps on the Greenbelt Trail; working with nonprofits on a location for Code Blue as well as affordable and workforce housing; working on the charter commission; and soon to be setting up a horse racing summit, among other things.

“The whole team here works on constituent services,” added Yepsen, “and the deputy will play a role in that, ensuring constituent questions are answered. She’ll also be coordinator of all the departments that report to the office of the mayor, and filling in on weekly cabinet meetings of department heads if I can’t be there.”

Kelly moved here in 1973, graduating from Saratoga Springs High School and later graduating from SUNY Brockport. She and her husband, former city court judge Douglas Mills who served 20 years on the bench, have a 16-year-old daughter.

“I’ve known Doug even longer than Meg,” said Yepsen. “He handled my inauguration, swearing me in as supervisor in 2006.”

Kelly has been involved in Saratoga Springs most of her life. “It’s a community I truly love,” she said, “and I’m happy to be in service to the City and the mayor.”

B-Spa Hidden Garden Tour BALLSTON SPA — The first ever Ballston Spa Hidden Garden Tour, held on Sunday June 26, was wonderfully received by the public. Garden aficionados were able to tour some of the best and most beautiful gardens of Ballston Spa and get ideas for their own home gardens. The tour was organized by the Ballston Spa House and Garden Club and the Friends of the Ballston Spa Public Library. Proceeds from the tour benefitted both groups. Even amidst a heat wave, tour goers said that they had a blast getting this behindthe-scenes look at some hidden gardens in the village and learning tips of the trade from superb gardeners.

The practice focuses on helping patients with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of diseases affecting the lungs, including pulmonary disease, pulmonary rehabilitation, critical care medicine, and sleep medicine.

Nguyen was fellowship-trained at Albany Medical College and has Board Certification from the American Board of Internal Medicine with subspecialty certification in Critical Care Medicine, Pulmonary Diseases, and Sleep Medicine. He is a member of Saratoga Hospital

TRF Board Welcomes Blatz-Murff SARATOGA SPRINGS — Pamela Blatz-Murff, whose dedication and expertise helped develop the Breeders’ Cup into one of racing’s more

prestigious and successful events, has joined the Board of Directors of the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation.

As senior vice-president of operations for the Breeders’ Cup, Blatz-Murff ’s primary responsibility was to coordinate nominations, entries and horsemen’ services. She began working for the Breeders’ Cup in 1982 and remained there for 27 years.

In 2001, she was named recipient of the Lord Derby Award for Services to International Racing by the Horserace Writers and Photographers Association of England. A resident of Lexington, Kentucky, BlatzMurff has spent recent years as a member of the Health and Regulation Committee of the American Horse Council.

The fair was held July 19 through 24 at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds in Ballston Spa. The student artwork and projects were on display in the fair’s Education Department Exhibit area (under the Grandstand). The official awards ceremony was held on July 24 at 4 p.m. in the fair’s Family Center. Superintendent Joseph P. Dragone expressed his congratulations to the students and staff from all the Ballston Spa schools for producing an award-winning display again this year.

Additional awards were also given to individual students for their artwork and projects that were on display in the exhibit.

This year’s award winners include Amelia Delong and Jacob Powell from Gordon Creek Elementary School; Shooter Howe from Malta Avenue Elementary School; Noah Pine from Milton Terrace Elementary School; Maia DiFiore, Nicholas Furnia and Olivia

DeRagon from Ballston Spa High School as well as James Prastio and Caitlyn Donnelly from Ballston Spa Middle School. The Middle School also received an award for the group project they displayed focusing on the No Place for Hate program completed by Art Teacher Mrs. Kristina Guernsey and students.

BALLSTON SPA — Saratoga County Sheriff Mike Zurlo announced that a child and Sheriff ’s Office staff from Saratoga County are attending the New York State Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s 2016 Summer Camp. The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp is designed to provide a solid recreational program combined with the development of a sense of good citizenship for economically challenged children aged 9 through 12. This will mark the 39th year of the camp’s operation.

The Sheriffs’ Summer Camp, which is located in the Finger Lakes Region near Penn Yan in Yates County, is supported by the Sheriffs’ Association Institute’s Honorary Members through their contributions and annual dues. This year the camp will accommodate over 900 deserving boys and girls from across New York State.

Zurlo stated “This is a great opportunity for our county youth and I personally thank Saratoga County residents for donating and making this possible.”

The camp includes structured activities on land and water, such as basketball, archery, biking, sailing, snorkeling, as well as typical camping fun such as games, campfires and picnics.

Agriculture is vital to the health of rural communities such as the Saratoga region. Yet, for many years, the health of agriculture has been in doubt. The average age of those who farm fulltime is over 60, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture continually reports that the number of young people who choose to farm for a living is on the decline.

Prep time: 20 minutes * Ingredients found at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market However, there is a silver lining: According to the USDA’s most recent AgCensus data, a new generation of farmers is on the rise. That generation consists of individuals who are in their thirties through their early fifties. Charles Hanley are among that group.

Hanley is the owner and operator of Hanley Farm, one of the newest produce vendors at the Saratoga Farmers’ Market. He returned recently to New York with his wife Michael and two children to take up farming full-time, and currently are leasing land from the Otrembiak Farm, one of the longest running vendors at the Saratoga market.

“I started growing seeds in the greenhouse just this past April,” Hanley said. “I’ve always been intrigued by the thought of farming, but never had a chance to start a farm until this year.”

The Hanley Farm stall can be found Saturdays at the farmers’ market pavilion at High Rock Park. It is located midway in the market, facing the street. The stall is small, but Hanley’s enthusiasm is reflected in his abundant array of produce: several varieties of tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, summer and winter squash, eggplant, lettuce, cabbage, watermelon, corn, and herbs. In a few weeks, the stall also will feature Hanley’s favorite vegetable: potatoes.

“I have explored some different potato varieties in my past gardening and planted some of my favorite at our farm this year,” Hanley said. “I find that the difference in taste and texture of a home grown potato is far superior to that of a store bought potato.”

The Otrembiak Farm supports Hanley’s endeavors. “As long as we have the space and people are willing to work the land and learn, we are happy to help,” said Steve Otrembiak.

Hanley Farm also sells at farmers’ markets in Gansevoort and Queensbury, and at a farm stand at the Crossroads General Store in Chestertown.

Directions Put the cucumber, carrot and cabbage in a large bowl. Season with salt and pepper and toss well. Add the ginger and lime juice, then toss again. Let the vegetables marinate for at least 10 minutes.

Julienned means cut into short thin strips.

Don’t Slip Through the Cracks

by John Reardon for Saratoga TODAY Hello Foodie Friends. We are now in the middle of the summer. Hopefully you have had the chance to entertain or enjoy some outdoor cooking.

Cooking on the BBQ grill can be fun and challenging at the same time – especially when working with finely chopped foods that slip into your grill.

There are many grill accessories available that can be gimmicky, while others very helpful. One grill item, the perforated steel grill topper is an excellent tool that will help prevent foods from slipping through the cracks.

The grill topper sits directly on the grill grates. It is helpful when cooking vegetables that might otherwise fall through the spaces. When company comes, and you are cooking

larger quantities needed to feed a crowd, it can become harder to control delicate and finely cooked foods and keeping them intact. The grill topper can assist with this while allowing heat and smoke to rise through the holes for flavorful cooking. When cooking vegetables, one solution is to leave vegetables such as portabella mushrooms whole and slice after cooking. Quartering bell peppers, grilling and cutting afterward into smaller pieces also make sense. Thick onion slices can be skewered to keep them manageable for the grill, but loose vegetables like green onions and asparagus are easier to handle with the rimmed topper also known as a grill basket. The grill basket is another option that is perfect for grilling up side dishes, small foods or stir fry.

Aromatic herbs contribute so much flavor to grilled foods, but their use is usually limited to marinade additions. Using the grill topper or grill basket allows us to make a “bed” of fresh herbs for grilling larger cuts of meat, fish or whole chickens. A “spatchcocked” chicken, a whole chicken with its backbone removed and flattened for faster cook time, is nicely grilled on a bed of two bunches

of green onions and a package of fresh rosemary, thyme, or tarragon leaves. Arrange them on the grill topper, and place the butterflied chicken directly on them, cavity side down.

Follow These Steps for Perfect Grilled Vegetables: 1. Toss whatever vegetable you’re using in olive oil and some salt.

2. Grill on the rack over medium-high heat, turning occasionally, until tender and nicely charred. The grilling time will depend on the size of what you’re cooking, but it goes fast—a minute or two for scallions—so don’t walk away.

3. Finish with a squeeze of lemon or lime juice.

This summer, don’t let your delicate foods or chopped items slip through the cracks of your grill. Pick up a grill topper or a grill basket to help you grill vegetables or meats as well. ARATOGA SPRINGS – The heat hung in the air, clinging to faces and body parts, prompting trickles of sweat on the otherwise well-dressed, well-groomed party-goers. There was no path to anywhere— the pinks, blues, blacks, reds and whites of the gorgeous summer dresses blurred together, brushing against each other as if characters on a slightly impressionist-style water color.

Suited men, some decorated with fedoras or sunglasses, leaned an elbow or a torso against the bar, clamoring for the prime real estate, calling out drink orders. Plastic cups lined the bar, pre-filled with ice slightly weepy from heat by the time wine, beer and liquors were hastily poured into their waiting mouths. Live music permeated (broke through) the heat, enticing some to the dance floor, if only to gain a few moments of personal space.

It was everything Siro’s Cup was expected to be and most guests would have it no other way, even if they had been allowed to choose otherwise. One of the most popular and well-attended parties of the summer, kicking off the Horse Racing season in Saratoga, drawing crowds from all over the country on the eve of opening day.

It’s been a Saratoga staple for twenty-three years, this year breaking records, raising more than 300-thousand dollars for The Center for Disability Services in Albany. One notable moment was a 50-thousand dollar gift from Mr. Billy Fuccillo to the center in honor of veteran trainer Kiaran McLaughlin, this year’s special honoree. McLaughlin was presented with an original painting of his favorite horse, Invasor, who won the 2006 Whitney Stakes.

Record breaking attendance as well, topping thirteen-hundred and including Saratoga’s very own philanthropist, Mary Lou Whitney.

ARATOGA SPRINGS – Each day when I walk into my office, I pause to look at a print of the great local artist Francelise Dawkins – a festive print titled “Community Gathering.”

On Saturday, July 16, I was magically transported into the spirit of that print at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center (SPAC).

What made this a great event was two-fold. It had everything. And it was a true community gathering.

From the people on the lawn in tents, many getting into the spirit of 1966 (the year of SPAC’s founding) by decorating them with vintage 60s items from vinyl to SPAM; the VIP red carpet arrival at the Hall of Springs for a gourmet dinner and cutting of the 50th birthday cake by Marylou, John, Jane, Charles, Susan and Bill (we are all on a first name basis this night); leading to what we in the biz call the “Black tie perp walk” where these same VIP’s show off their high fashion as they exit the Hall to their Orchestra Seats; the New York City Ballet’s performance itself (“A Midsummer Night’s Dream”); post-performance fireworks, followed by MORE fireworks from the groove by Soulist Garland Nelson and Soul Session Band.

I have to pay homage to my partner on this gig. Francesco D’Amico brought his lens and his A-game to his first ballet gala. We treated our mission like a military operation, photographing every tent, every VIP, every pas de deux, every boom-boom-boom, every everything. Nearly 200 good shots in all! Fourth Annual “Hay, Oats and Spaghetti” at Bravo Smashes Record Raised for TRF

ARATOGA SPRINGS – Hey! This was a blast-o-rama event, well attended by the horsey set and their supporters – The Fourth Annual “Hay, Oats and Spaghetti” Benefit from the Foundation that specializes in custom-crafted unique and fun events year after year – Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF).

This carb-loading cornucopia was hosted at Bravo Restaurant (3246 South Broadway, Saratoga Springs) by Lauren and Giuseppe Grisio - owners of Mama Mia’s Restaurant. Suffice to say, they and their staff have the winning pasta pedigree to put out mega-good Italian cuisine.

Founded in 1983, TRF is the largest equine rescue organization and sanctuary of its kind, devoted to the rescue, retirement, rehabilitation and retraining of Thoroughbred racehorses no longer able to compete on the track.

Being a fan of unsung heroes is my specialty – and in that connection, we salute Mary, Jessica, and Jennifer at TRF – as well as Rosanna from Mama Mia’s/Bravo – even a Hannah Qua sighting behind the Bravo bar - among many devoted people we enjoyed. Some of them were camera-shy, but all in attendance appreciated their hard work. And here’s the proof: the 190 attendees generously donated about $18,000 – pulverizing the previous “Hay high” by a whopping 80 percent – I can’t resist: that ain’t hay folks! Hey! And hey! This is only the first leg of TRF’s summer trifecta: Upcoming they will be hosting “Tee-Off for TRF and PDJF” (Permanently Disabled Jockey’s Foundation) at McGregor Links on Tuesday, August 23; and the Seventh Annual “Run/Walk for the Horses” 5K and Kids’ Fun Run at Saratoga Spa State Park on Saturday, September 3… Hey! Polo by Twilight Celebrates 37th Annual Palamountain Scholarship Benefit – Tuesday, July 26 ARATOGA SPRINGS — Clear evening skies greeted the long line of autos as they traveled up the path to the Saratoga Polo fields, dropping festively dressed passengers at the clubhouse entry for an evening of chukkers, cocktails and delectable culinary creations, courtesy of the Skidmore College chefs.

The 37th annual Polo by Twilight is a shining star in the galaxy of summer galas and events held in Saratoga Springs each year, and this one was no exception. First held in 1979, the Palamountain Scholarship Benefit was a luncheon and polo match, honoring Joseph C. and Anne T. Palamountain for their 22-year stewardship of Skidmore College.

The Palamountains believed a Skidmore education should be accessible to talented students, regardless of their financial situation. Thirty-seven years later, Polo by Twilight has fueled the Palamountain Scholarship Fund, thanks to the unwavering generosity of members of the Skidmore and Saratoga Springs communities. In that time, the Fund has grown to over $8 million, making it the College’s third largest scholarship fund.

Food and drink flowed, bidding on silent auction items was brisk, and, as guests reached their tables under the gleaming expanse of white tents for the gourmet dinner buffet that followed, the rest of the evening was punctuated by lively games and a chamber music performance by Decoda.

The evening ended with an assortment of desserts featuring fair trade chocolate and other seasonal favorites, along with a live auction sponsored by Chris and Sarah Ward, of Bidforyourbenefit. According to Debra K. Townsend, Skidmore College’s Interim Vice President, Communications & Marketing, there were 540 attendees, including a record 75 junior attendees. The gross revenue estimate for the evening was a whopping $261,000, making it a truly stellar twilit evening.

Concerts Brighten Dark Tuesdays at Saratoga Battlefield

by Arthur Gonick Saratoga TODAY STILLWATER — Saratoga Race Course may be quiet on Tuesdays, but Saratoga Battlefield will be alive with music. Friends of Saratoga Battlefield will sponsor four free lunchtime concerts at Saratoga National Historical Park’s visitor center at noon on the first four Tuesdays of August. Bring a lunch and listen to a different program each week: folk, traditional and martial music.

August 2: Elizabeth Huntley — How much more elegant can things get? Sublime music of the 18th century performed on the harp, beautiful views of the Saratoga

Battlefield from the Visitor Center lawn. Enjoy classical pieces played upon the Queen of Instruments performed by harpist Elizabeth Huntley.

August 9: Rich Bala — New York State, and the Hudson Valley in particular, was the site of some of the most dramatic moments and events of America’s Revolutionary War. Get a musical history lesson from acclaimed folk singer Rich Bala.

August 16: Linda Russell — Celebrate “America’s Best Idea” with a musical tour through National Parks! History, culture and conservation served up in a tuneful program by the renowned folksinger Linda Russell performs on guitar, penny whistle and dulcimers.

Fife and Drum Corps — Enjoy 18th century martial music at its best! Hear the songs that heartened armies and gave them direction during the Revolutionary War presented by Fort Ticonderoga’s Fife and Drum Corps.

Set during the 1849 Irish Famine, Shanty Gold is the

story of thirteen-year-old Mary Boland, sold aboard a coffin ship, and Kamua Okafor, the African slave boy who becomes her friend and partner in survival.

Ms. Charters will be accompanied by Irish musician, Padraig Timoney. Wine and cheese will be served.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Old Friends at Cabin Creek, a retirement ranch dedicated to providing a home for thoroughbred racehorses after their careers have ended, will hold its seventh annual fundraising gala on Sunday, August 7 at 6:30 p.m.

The event will be held at the Lodge, One Nelson Avenue, Saratoga Springs.

Tickets can be purchased now at oldfriendsatcabincreek. com, and there will also be a table set up for ticket sales and donations during the yearling sales at Fasig-Tipton.

Tickets are $100 per person, which includes two drink tickets, cocktail hour, dinner, and silent and live auctions.

News Channel 13’s Chris Onorato will be the event’s emcee and auctioneer for the evening, and jockey Ramon Dominguez will receive the Second annual “Old Friends” award for his service and dedication to thoroughbred horses.

REVIEW: Star Trek Beyond

by Norra Reyes Saratoga TODAY WORLDWIDE — Paramount Pictures’ latest installment of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek universe is an exciting ride for everyone except Trek purists. It is well worth the extra bucks for surround sound, but if you go 3D you might miss the extraordinary detail in the cinematography and computer-generated imagery (CGI).

The spaceport is especially impressive and a far cry from Star Trek DS9, showcasing an estimated budget of $185 million well spent.

Sure, we’ve seen similar twists of gravity in other movies, but none with this attention to living, breathing detail of people and vehicles and day-to-day activities. The visual artistry and design in this film will surely gain awards at the Oscars and Golden Globes.

The entertaining plot derives from the creative talent of Simon Pegg, who also stars in the film as engineer Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. Co-written with Doug Jung, fans are being treated to a new Star Trek adventure, a refreshing break to the story rehashes of the first two films. The humor is spontaneous, natural, and continues to poke a little fun at the original Trek television series, including a scene redolent of the “I see you managed to get your shirt off,” line from “Galaxy Quest.”

Pegg does a good job of character development, with a reflective Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) facing a “now what?” realization of the consequences of accepting a dare to get through Starfleet Academy.

Pine is entirely believable as a young man questioning his motives as he is maturing into leadership, but Zachery Quinto could not quite pull off a Vulcan caught between duty to his Starfleet promise and duty to the remnants of his endangered species. The actor’s portrayal of the inimitable Spock lacked the logical confidence of his earlier portrayals, making Spock seem more vulnerable and, well, human in a disappointing way.

Without giving anything away, the villain continues the theme of personal consequences, and the tale’s solution is a little reminiscent of “Shaun of the Dead,” also written

by Pegg, but that can be forgiven in the glorious treatment of it by director Justin Lin, of “Fast and Furious”

fame, with spectacular space explosions to the screeches of the Beastie Boys.

And speaking of music, there is nothing like sitting in a darkened, surround-sound theater listening to the magic of Oscarwinner Michael Giacchino’s genius.

His original score from the 2009 Star Trek continues to thrill audiences, beginning with its distinct oboe’s long, trailing note that awakens a hint of heartbreaking solitude before it moves into a building percussion of edge-of-seat anticipation. The score’s emotional transition is so natural that the audience doesn’t even realize it has been set up to love the movie before it’s even begun.

Kudos also goes to actress Sofia Boutella, who expertly brought to life new character Jaylah in the film.

With the brains of an engineer, a tragic backstory, and the dangerous beauty of a ninja warrior, there’s no doubt that Comic Cons and Halloween will be making a killing off of Jaylah costumes this year.

And for the “shippers” out there, as far as budding romance, well, Mel Brooks said it best in “History of the World Part I.” Let’s just say, “It’s good to be the king (er, writer).”

Cinematographer Stephen F. Windon has worked with Lin on Fast and Furious movies, and their teamwork shows in the thrilling action sequences that will satisfy the modern Trek audience, but true Trekkers will note the flash replacing substance in the plot.

For a series that was leading the way in social debate, such as airing the first interracial kiss on television in 1968, the new Star Trek seems to be just trying to keep up. The leaked pre-release spoiler that helmsman Hikaru Sulu, played by John Cho, is gay was a nod to the original Sulu’s George Takei. It is tastefully done, but it underscores the plot’s lack of challenging themes such as world economics, man versus technology, and human (species) rights that made the original Trek so compelling despite

its low budget and overacting.

Paramount seems content to stick with tried and true formulas that make good money feeding a sugar-high audience – and this film is great fun and among the best in that category. But is the studio risking audiences will leave the film feeling the emptiness of enjoying a high-calorie dessert with nothing thought provoking to sustain them and bring them back for more?

It would have been easy to make the artifact in the story a rare item that survived the destruction of Vulcan in Star Trek 2009, which would have provided a little depth to the plot. And where are the Ferengis who are likely making enriching deals left and right off that disaster, but neither J.J. Abrams (director of Star Trek 2009 and Star Trek Into Darkness) and his writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman nor the Lin/ Pegg/Jung team thought to capitalize on the wealth of potential original stories such a tragedy could create.

Humor, action, pioneering science, and depth is the real money-making Trek formula, and this film comes painfully close. The next movie will make or break this reboot.

“Star Trek Beyond” was dedicated in memoriam to two lost stars – Leonard Nimoy, actor, director, and original Spock, who died February 27, 2015 at age 83, and Anton Yelchin, (ship navigator Pavel Andreievich Chekov) who died June 19 this year at age 27.

Knot Dead

Free Thursday Residency at Putnam Den

by Nikia Harris For Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — The night started with an entourage of smiles and firm handshakes, friends old and new, conversations filled the venue of summer tales and recaps of current national shows, such as Phish and Dead and Co, which recently occurred in the capital region. The crowd seemed hungry for more and danced on a Thursday - like it was Saturday night.

The family-like group consists of two drummers, and three powerful vocalists, one named Nora Lamphere, whose hips play the tambourine like I’ve never seen. The two guitarists (Mike Urban, and lead Evan Lewis often switched roles and intertwined their notes engulfing me with a welcoming invitation to let loose and dance with the desire I came there for, to feel comfortable in the 21st century.

Knot Dead is a miracle sent from Jerry himself, and he would be proud.

The first set started off with “New Minglewood Blues “, followed by an ultimate favorite, “Althea”. As the notes started dancing through the room, I noticed more people filtering through the door, coming in from the patio to see this wonderful woman Nora Lamphere belt out lyrics, sang once by a bellowing manly man. It seemed as I was watching Allison Krauss do-si-do with Jerry G, as Nora’s voice carried half way to the Racetrack.

“Playing in the Band” introduced the second set, as it faded, Dan, the bassist made himself known by front manning a Pink Floyd cover, “Time” – very strategically placed, tying everything together. Go figure, Timing is everything in life. Well Played!

The drummers, Sean Kanawada, and Jason Vazquez exultantly carried the percussion.

Watching the two sit side-by-side creating – this, was a show all its own.

I wasn’t surprised Michelle Shocked showed up to listen from outside the venue, to see who took her last day of residency. She was recently served an eviction notice from the Putnam Den. Michelle

Shocked was respectful and gave herself distance from the venue in hopes to retrieve some self-dignity and property.

Everyone was dancing to “Sugaree,” I don’t think anyone noticed.

Hopefully she took some good vibes and positivity with her from this event. I know I did. If you are not sure what happened with the ending of Michelle

My SPAC Moments Behind the Scenes – at a High Level

by Kristy Godette for Saratoga TODAY My first concert, my high school graduation stage, and my first “big girl” job all have one thing in common – SPAC. So for a place that fulfilled so many of my milestones, it feels only fair that I pay homage to its special milestone, the 50th Anniversary.

As a Saratoga Springs native you know that it’s a special place.

As a little girl, I was mesmerized

– twirling in a little pink ballet tutu – the first time my mom took me to a New York City Ballet matinee. As a tween, ecstatic, when I scored balcony tickets to Britney Spears. My big brother, who previously was way too cool for “Baby One More Time”, quickly volunteered to take me. And earlier this month, as an adult-intraining, I admittedly attended the Phish show, and of course it’s legendary “Shakedown Street.”

However, despite growing up at SPAC, it took working behind the scenes to be able to

fully appreciate what makes it tick. The dedication of the small staff to present a full season to the public is astounding. You need to give up your life – and sleep -- for about 4 months of the year. Seriously.

The phrase “the show must go on,” while likely overused, rang true quite literally.

in a rain storm while staging promotional photos) to handing out American Girl doll raffle tickets to anxious moms to quickly tidying my notoriously messy car before picking up The Philadelphia Orchestra President – each was a once in a lifetime experience.

Meet and greet hundreds of Russians from the Bolshoi Ballet in the Price Chopper parking lot on a Sunday night? No problem. Smile and welcome them to Saratoga while they groggily exit their Upstate buses and navigate the foreign aisles containing 50 brands of cereal? Sure.

The New York City Ballet Gala and Lawn Party, always one of my favorite events, was subject to many near crises. At “The British Invasion,” we counted 32 tent rentals set-up. There was supposed to be 33. Can we get another tent installed ASAP all while not disrupting the current matinee performance? We must. Where are the eight missing high-top tables? And why don’t the linens fit?

And then the curtain rises to Balanchine’s Union Jack – and you remember what it’s for.

Wait – where is the male arm bouquet Marcia is presenting on stage after the first Act? It’s not

backstage with production?

Ah, yes, it’s in the wrong office. Roger. And the second act continues.

To borrow from Bill Dake who coined a popular SPAC motto (printed as a required desk adornment): instead of admiring the problem, look for the solution. And don’t answer the phone – “can I help you?” It’s “I can help.”

This philosophy has followed me to New York City where I now work at a public relations firm. Sometimes when I speak, my former bosses come out. And I’m proud of that.

The amazing thing about SPAC is that it has always had the most loyal “fans” – rivaling that of even Phishheads, and classical aficionados – who care about the venue, its history and its future.

And while we all know the show must go on, it’s nice to reflect on the place that we natives are lucky to have in our backyard.

trailer operation that is stunning to see. Kristy Godette (see page 30) arranged for photographer Mark Bolles and myself to sneak behind the curtain to hob-nob with the hardhats, schmooze with the seamstresses, and just plain gawk. Call it the ballet before the ballet. Bravo!

by Brendan O’Meara for Saratoga TODAY All great chess players have one thing in common: They see several moves ahead.

Horse trainers also see many moves ahead. The chess player doesn’t have to check on the soundness of his knight, but health being equal, the best way to figure out what to do today is to know where you’re going.

Take Nyquist, our incumbent Kentucky Derby winner. For a horse of his talent, the goal is the Breeders’ Cup Classic and locking up two Eclipse Awards, namely Champion Three-Year-Old and

Horse of the Year.

There are different paths to that end and trainer Doug O’Neill tipped his hand in a major way, a way that will no doubt cause Saratoga goers a bit of Travers angst.

O’Neill told Chip Gherke of Horse Racing Nation that, “Assuming the Haskell (on Sunday, July 31) goes according to plan, I was very interested in the next race after the Haskell for Nyquist as I am a firm believer that the Pacific Classic makes sense due to several reasons which include not shipping again for the remainder of the year, a $1,000,000 bonus in play, the lure of legacy, and much more to gain and less to lose by running in the Pacific Classic vs. the Travers where he would have more to lose and not much else to gain.”

Who isn’t a fan of a classic pro’s vs. con’s list? Like O’Neill said (assuming the Haskell goes according to plan, which in a small field should be a veritable walkover on the Jersey Shore) the smartest move for the campaign of the horse is to stay west.

O’Neill already said, no matter the result, that Nyquist will ship back to California after the Haskell. If the Travers Stakes were truly in play,

Nyquist would remain on the east coast and not risk the fatigue that comes with cross-country travel.

Saratoga has a way of slaying favorites, hence the sobriquet Graveyard of Champions. Look no farther than last year’s public service of running American Pharoah in the Travers. He lost to a keen Keen Ice that day. It didn’t diminish Pharoah’s legacy one bit, but the back and forth from the east coast to the west coast two times coupled with Saratoga’s challenging surface was too much for even the 12th Triple Crown winner.

And lest we forget, the Pacific Classic runs at Del Mar, site of this year’s Breeders’ Cup. Add to that the Pacific Classic’s $1 million bonus for a horse who sweeps the Pacific Classic, Awesome Again Stakes and the Breeders’ Cup Classic and there’s little incentive for Nyquist to come east ever again. Okay, so the potential to rake in $600,000 for the winner’s share of the Haskell’s purse is too good not to pass up.

The Travers Stakes has more prestige than the Pacific Classic and the Awesome Again Stakes at the Breeders’ Cup is only rivaled by the Classic. The Travers has far more prestige, but Nyquist’s

owner, Paul Reddam, isn’t about prestige. Reddam is about dollars.

Look no farther than his punishingly high interest rates on loans for typically unqualified borrowers. Reddam’s been accused of “loansharking” by California Governor Jerry Brown and Reddam is not apologetic about it.

When I’ll Have Another, his 2012 Triple Crown hopeful, hurt himself prior to the Belmont Stakes, he retired the colt at the speed of light. You got the sense that had I’ll Have Another run in the Belmont Stakes and went clear by five lengths - a half-furlong from the wire Reddam would have been yelling, “Retire! Retire! Retire!”

In any case, the carrot that can bait a horse’s connections is rarely legacy or prestige. One race and one race only can do that.

Trainers would run in that race for free. But that’s it. Maybe the Arc in France, but American trainers this side of Chad Brown and Bill Mott look like they’re drinking battery acid if you say, “turf.”

Frank Stronach, he of stern brow, knew how easy it would be to keep Nyquist on the west coast.

He could not have known at the time that this $1 million gambit

could pay off. He offered that incentive mere days before the Kentucky Derby. But Nyquist being the cream of the crop—and horse racing being the ultimate gambling sport—his bet seemed a good one that maybe, just maybe, Nyquist would win the Derby and be present for this West Coast Triple Crown.

Independent of the money, it was likely that Nyquist would have remained in California anyway. The money pours concrete in the wells of the foundation.

Just a week ago it appeared that perhaps we’d have the three winners of the Triple Crown races running in the Travers and maybe even the filly Songbird, the emphatic winner of the Coaching Club American Oaks (and best three-year-old in the land).

With Songbird pointing toward a different 10-furlong race (the Grade I Alabama Stakes) and Nyquist likely staying west after the Haskell, that leaves Creator and Exaggerator (who is questionable at press time) to duel it out in Saturday’s Jim Dandy for Travers favoritism four weeks later.

This house was always made of cards, but, man, did this ever blow over easy.

Weezie at the Flagpole First Weekend’s Trends

by Louisa Foye for Saratoga TODAY On an Opening Day that had even the coolest of customers melting in the shade, defending Angel Cordero, Jr. Jockey Title Winner, Irad Ortiz, Jr., served notice with four wins, that he is not about to relinquish his title without a fight from start to finish! Over a weekend that saw him eke out a thrilling Grade 1 victory aboard Dacita for Chad Brown in the loaded Diana, over his idol Johnny Velazquez and Recepta, “Juni” also claimed foul against his very own little brother, José! Racing fans everywhere were reminded of what an

incredibly deep, and extremely competitive and talented Jockey Colony we are so very blessed to have here in Saratoga every year!

Not to be outdone by his young protégé and fellow Boricua, Hall of Famer Johnny V. actually scored on the very first Stakes race of the meet, with an impressive victory in Friday’s Schuylerville, aboard the good looking 2-year-old filly, Sweet Loretta. Johnny continued his winning ways with back-to-back wins in the sixth and seventh on Saturday, and picked up two on Sunday, and one more on Monday, to close out the opening weekend with six Wins, two behind Irad’s eight. Javi Castellano has five, and Joel Rosario

four. ‘Tho the 3-time Eclipse Award Winner was shut out on Opening Day, Javi came out of the gate with a vengeance on Saturday, as he won the first race, and three of the first five, including the Sanford Stakes for 2-year-olds on Bitumen, and closed out the card with a rare (for him) double digit priced winner, at $14.60, in the finale, for his fourth Win of the day, over the two favorites ridden by the always formidable Ortiz Brothers!

After his breakout and dominating Belmont Spring Meet that saw him beat his big brother Irad by 21 victories, 78-57, to win the Title, José Ortiz came out of the box a bit more slowly up here, not getting his first win ‘til Saturday in the eighth race. He recorded his second win on Sunday aboard Mary Lou Whitney’s Bird Song, not to be confused with the magnificent Songbird, who raced to an easy victory later on the same card, in the Coaching Club American Oaks.

Under the guidance of Hall of Famer Mike Smith, in from Cali for the Grade 1 Stakes, the uber talented Songbird thwarted the challenge of the very game Carina Mia, as she looked her in the eye when CM pulled even with her, but eventually proved she is the boss! They were battling nose to

nose at the top of the stretch, but Songbird put her away for good by the 8th pole, and cruised to an exciting victory! This amazing filly showed us that she was not about to fall victim to our dubious moniker of being the “Graveyard of Champions”, while earning the highest Beyer figure of her nine race, undefeated career, at 101!

I had staked out my favorite spot on the rail at the Finish Line early on, eagerly anticipating Songbird’s appearance, and she did not disappoint with her gutty performance! Upon her return to the Winner’s Circle very loud applause and cheers greeted her by the ever-appreciative Saratoga fans and railbirds just like me! How wonderful it is that she’ll remain in Saratoga under the care of Jerry Hollendorfer’s Assistant, as she’s being pointed toward The Alabama on August 20!

I would be remiss not to mention the excitement that was generated by the young up and coming star Panamanian rider, Ricardo Santana, Jr., on Sunday. The very humble and gracious Jockey, who graduated from the legendary Hall of Famer Laffit Pincay, Jr.’s Academy in Panama, rode three longshots home to victory, for three different trainers, including the fourth of six

wins in eight tries for the white-hot Kiaran McLaughlin!

Santana, who has been based in Louisville and Hot Springs, captured his very first Grade 1 victory this past Spring in the Million Dollar Arkansas Derby, aboard the eventual Belmont Stakes Champion, Creator.

Ricardo quickly learned just how cruel the horse racing business can be, however, when he was replaced by our own young gun, Irad, before the running of the Belmont! As we all know, Irad turned that fortunate mount, over his familiar surface at Big Sandy, into his very first Triple Crown Race victory, for WinStar Farm’s Creator, one of the four grey progeny of the very great and prolific sire, Tapit, that we witnessed along the Triple Crown trail!

You can bet that the stinging pain of losing that mount has fueled Ricardo’s passion and desire to prove that he belongs, and that he deserves a place among the elite Jocks that call New York home! In spite of a string of late season suspensions for reckless riding at Oaklawn, Ricardo has remained the go-to rider for the soon-to-be Hall of Famer, Steve Asmussen, on his Midwest circuit, but I truly believe that he is more than ready to show everyone that he belongs right here on the biggest stage at The Spa! I’d like to close my initial weekly observations with a shout out to Trainer Jason Servis, who was on fire Opening Day, when he recorded two Wins with Irad aboard Roll Tide Roll and Annie Rocks!

This same pair teamed up with Dauphine Russe on Sunday, when Jason pulled even with Chad Brown, as they each have three Wins apiece, behind Kiaran’s six, and Todd’s five.

Until next week, we can all imagine the exciting possibilities that loom in front of us, with just four days down, and 36 to go!

The Most Difficult Race Meet in The World Saratoga is also the Graveyard of Many a Wallet

by Tom Amello for Saratoga TODAY Could you hear the weeping? It began approximately two minutes after track announcer Larry Collmus led the crowd in the annual “And they’re off at Sarato¬¬ga.” When #1 Clifton Pleasure (6-1) angled out off the rail to run down Battle of Evermore (5-1) and crossed the finish line ahead of favored Jet Black in the July 22nd nine furlong opener, most players here and watching from around the country were officially re-introduced to the most difficult race meet in the world.

So why and how is this race meet we love so difficult? Let me count the ways.

1) For starters, Saratoga is a boutique meet for the fashionable and sophisticated. Thoroughbred aficionados (and that includes serious recreational handicappers) point to this race meeting. The prestige of winning a race (and cashing tickets) at Saratoga will forever draw the best horses that have been bred to the best race mares. I was in the paddock some time back with a group of West Point Thoroughbred partners. When jockey Mike Smith shook hands with one partner, this gentleman leaned in and said in a graveled tone, “Get me the picture, Mike.” To a certain degree, for

those directly involved, winning a race, any race, at Saratoga is like the Super Bowl or seventh game series final in other major sports… extremely competitive, and everyone wants that picture.

2) The racing season at Saratoga has always been compressed into a limited calendar. My personal experience began when Saratoga was the “August Place to Be.” It was a frenetic 24-day happening. Most trainers and owners took one shot with their horses during the meeting.

Some horses thrived on the dirt or turf surfaces; others failed to handle either the August heat or the heat of competition. A few sharp trainers squeezed a second run from horses.

Those horses able to win once often returned to repeat their winning efforts, creating a “horse-for-thecourse” mythology grounded on the efforts of runners like Quick Call and Fourstardave. A win or nearwinning effort over Saratoga dirt or turf continues to be powerful medicine. The current 40-day stand gives connections more opportunities to race. Each year more horses become potential horses-for-the-course.

Leave previous Spa winners, regardless of current form, off your tickets at your own peril. It’s a tough meet.

3) Saratoga is synonymous with juvenile racing. The Saratoga race meet offers breeders and owners of juvenile colts and fillies the opportunity to showcase their stock. From sprint dashes for non-winners to end of meet stakes at longer distances, young horses begin the sorting and selecting process for the Triple Crown and major Filly races of their sophomore year.

4) Saratoga draws from all the major racing circuits around the country. Also, connections with runners from lesser tracks ship in to test the deep waters. Sometimes

they snare a purse and a prize.

Maiden Special Weight races for unraced and lightly raced juveniles are particularly difficult.

Like a spiritualist reading tea leaves, one must consider nature (pedigree) and nurture (trainers).

The few specialists in pedigree, physicality and supporting trainer stats might have an advantage over a much less informed public. But knowledge and hard work only reduce the degree of difficulty that is the Saratoga meet.

5) Turf racing around twoturns (and two turf courses!) is another feature of the Saratoga race meet. As important as juvenile racing, the very nature of turf racing makes this premier meet more difficult. Sprinting on dirt or turf is the polar opposite of distance running over turf. Sprinting is all about gaining position in the early going. Distance turf racing is about gaining inside position and saving ground to avoid racing wide.

Distance turf racing is about position among the herd down the straight, then into and around a turn. Unlike the sprinter’s beginning dash, distance turf racing culminates in a late sprint to the wire.

The nature of turf racing leaves betting favorites more vulnerable than their sprinting counterparts. Add pedigree analysis to the equation, whether the horse will perform well over turf, and the level of difficulty increases further. Turf fields are usually full fields, sometimes with 14 meeting the starter. Contention often runs deep - the process of elimination difficult. Oy! 6) And, of course, Saratoga’s often quirky weather pattern (Hazy, Hot and Humid with a 30 percent chance of a monsoon) wreaks havoc on turf racing. Races switched or rained-off from turf-to-dirt are

maddening to handicappers. First, there are the scratches. Next, there is the search for horses meant to run on turf that can handle a track labeled “off ”. Finally, certain horses were originally entered in hopes the race would be rained off. Yeesh!

7) Intent increases the difficulty of the Saratoga meet.

Everyone wants to win. Everyone shops a spot where they can be competitive enough to win. Many prepare horses months out hoping their horse will peak during Saratoga. Such preps often hide or darken form, nothing unethical or shameful, but another factor that makes this meet an absolute killer.

8) Finally, Saratoga brings together the best of the best in terms of jockey colony and trainers. Top riders from far away circuits struggle to obtain and keep business at Saratoga. Lesser-known or obscure trainers sometimes get the best of a Todd Pletcher, Chad Brown or Steve Asmussen…but not with any regularity. These irregular winners are often head scratchers that bust up more logical plays. Yeesh again!

Yes, the annual race meet at Saratoga is a difficult and tough meet. It’s tough on breeders, owners, trainers, jockeys, backstretch employees, and handicappers. But these folks love being in

Saratoga, competing at Saratoga, winning and, yes, non-winning at Saratoga…after all, a difficult day at Saratoga is better than an easy day anywhere else.

Songbird and Rachel: Sista’s from Another Mother?

by Marion E. Altieri for Saratoga TODAY As anyone who’s involved in the sport of Thoroughbred racing will tell you, horses’ fathers count only when it comes to creating the horse— but not when considering who’s half-sister or half-brother to whom.

The reason for this is simple, albeit unscientific: one mare (female horse) can give birth to just one (sometimes two) baby at a time. But one stallion (stud horse) can father, oh, 100 or more babies a year— often, more.

And, over the course of a career that may span two decades—that can add up to over 2,000 foals or more.

Which is a lot of kids, carrying around the DNA of one male horse.

So, for practical purposes, in horse racing— Thoroughbreds, at least—the sire (father) is not considered when thinking about a horse’s family. Only the dam (mother) is counted.

Ergo, no one in the sport would say that the magnificent Songbird—who onceagain proved her dominance on Sunday in the Coaching Club American Oaks—is halfsister to the equally-magnificent Rachel Alexandra, who whipped the boys in 2009, when she became the first filly ever to win the Woodward Stakes here in Saratoga.

When Songbird won her ninth consecutive race last Sunday in Saratoga, she broke the curse that felled the mighty American Pharoah last summer. He could beat a field in the Belmont Stakes and thereby take the Triple Crown—but he couldn’t beat The Saratoga Curse. The Curse, for those of you who might not be aware, is that Saratoga Race Course— specifically, our track, itself— is called, the Graveyard of Champions.

has nothing to do with the three horses buried at Clare Court, or Go for Wand, who’s buried in the infield—but rather was given to the place because great Champions on the level of Secretariat and, yes, American Pharoah, come here riding high, at the peak of their careers.

Then they get shot down by a horse, usually a horse of whom no one was aware before that moment.

But not Songbird! The great filly, who had eight straight victories under her saddle before Sunday, came here to win, and win, she did.

Her dam and sire, Ivanavinalot (get it?) and

Medaglia d’Oro (“Gold Medal,” in Italian) hooked up. Ivanavinalot had earned a respectable $647,300 during her career. Medaglia d’Oro, however, pocketed $5,754,720.

Songbird is only a three-yearold, yet already she’s amassed $2,402,000. In this respect, at least her bank account surely looks like that of her father.

So, on the one hoof, we have an industry which, for entirely pragmatic purposes, doesn’t acknowledge two horses who share a sire, only, as being half-siblings. It would get way-too-crazy in the sales ring. Everyone would be related to everyone else, really,

in The Big Picture.

But the problem with this theory is two-fold: 1) The lack of acknowledgement flies in the face of the science of Genetics; and 2) One cannot deny that, for example, visually Songbird is almost a dead-ringer for Rachel Alexandra, who—yes, really IS her half-sister. (At least a geneticist would confirm this.) We’ll revisit this in just a minute.

Whether or not Thoroughbred racing says so, Songbird and Rachel Alexandra have too much in common to be “mere coincidence,” for in fact—it’s no coincidence: 1) They do share the same

father, a big champion.

2) They share status as an Alpha, that is, they are the dominant horses in herds—which, in the case of racing, is the field of horses who are in any given race. Alphas, whether in a pasture or blowing out of a starting gate, give off The Vibe: they let it be known that they are the Alpha, and that to mess with them would be unwise. If this seems like a strange concept, please see the NYRA video of Songbird’s Coaching Club American Oaks, in which Carina Mia backed off once it became obvious that Songbird was determined to win. Kerry Thomas, of “Thomas Herding Technique” has written extensively about this notion, that horses, even in a race, are looking for an Alpha.

In both Songbird and Rachel Alexandra, opponents recognized their Alpha, and submitted to her. This predisposition toward “Alphaness” may sound like pseudo-science, but in fact, it’s in the realm of horse psychology. All prey animals have Alphas to protect and guide them in times of danger.

Horses have Alphas, regardless of breed. So even racing Thoroughbreds are always

looking for their Alphas, it’s just instinct so to do.

3) They share facial markings and eye placement that humans would recognize as being familial. Both horses have very unusual large, white markings on their faces: Rachel’s, like an inverted exclamation mark that got smudged, and Songbird’s is so much like Rachel’s that, although it lacks a bit of the white—is close enough that many people do double-takes when seeing photos.

And the eyes. Oh, the eyes.

Anyone who knows horses knows that the eyes are the door—not just to the soul of the horse, but perhaps to the entire Universe. But in this case, that of discussing DNA and genetic resemblance, we absolutely have to note that the eyeballs of the two horses are almost identically placed on the sides of their heads—that their orbital arches (eyebrow bones, as it were), are nearly identical in shape, size and placement on the head.

Their eyes, themselves are intense, and a little crazy when they get into Racing Mode.

These horses, who may be loving and gentle with their connections and visitors—once they’re in the

starting gate and about to race— focus those eyes like lasers.

Yes, Songbird and Rachel Alexandra have too-much in common to discount their connection to Medaglia d’Oro. They may not be considered to be halfsisters in horse racing’s way of thinking—but they are. Genetics proves it; their shared penchant for winning; their Alpha spirits, instincts, facial markings—even their eyes—prove, in spades, that maybe, just maybe, greatness can be programmed into a horse. And that, sometimes, two extraordinary animals can race on the great Saratoga Race Course, and chew up the competition. Because…it’s just in their Nature.

Welcome back buddy! I think last time we were into this discussion about the Civil War, right?”

And on and on.

The scene would take place at Joe Collins restaurant (now Bravo) when it was one of THE places to go. Night after night, he would hold court at that big square bar, with sometimes up to two-dozen people. Later, it would happen at the defunct Broadway Joe’s with a similar amount of patrons.

One bartender would hold court, uncannily remembering everyone’s drink, whether it was two hours, two days or two years since you last walked in.

Even more amazingly, the man behind the bar would have the ability to hold two-dozen separate conversations, on maybe 24 different topics – enough of a renaissance man to speak knowledgably on each. But wait there’s more: “Yeah, Art. Now with Gooden and Darling, Frankie V and Jesse, you would think he’d have to try to mess it up…

I don’t know…”

Yes he did. And he still does.

But the amazing thing about Joe Raucci is that he can hold two-dozen or so conversations, PAUSE them to serve 4-5 customers, and come back to you – picking up at the exact spot you and he left off… visit awhile, then off to the next guy…

Meet Joe Raucci, Saratoga Springs through and through.

The Collector. Of memorabilia – different artifacts of this and that. Sports in general. But it is horse racing, particularly Saratoga horse racing, and Saratoga Springs in macro, that Joe focuses his concentration toward. And we have

already established that the man can concentrate.

During a too-brief visit recently, he had stuff strewn out on his kitchen table that made it resemble the set of Hoarders. But the thing was – it was all cool, and very valuable.

So extensive is his collection that we had to segment it into digestible, yet delicious parts.

There are things we are saving for future segments that I promise will blow your mind.

Silks: Twenty Years and Getting Stronger “Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”

Special Olympics Athlete Oath From all sorts of name variants: Satins, Silks and Stars, Silks and Satins 5K, and finally Silks and Satins Jeff Clark Memorial 5K Run, we have gone from a plucky attempt to a well-established Spa City event with over 1,000 preregistered runners.

Sponsors like Price Chopper have been with us since the beginning; others like Fleet Feet Sports who supplied the classy Brooks tech tees, are more recent. Some volunteers have been with us since its inception and, like corporate players in a conference room, insist on having their customary course marshal posting. Others like Hannah Wood, who just moved to the area last week (!), are new. But all are dedicated to the Special Olympics cause and the Saratoga Health, History and Horses concept.

Twenty years ago a group of Saratoga Stryders thought it a shame that there was no major footrace in downtown Saratoga and decided to remedy that situation. Dan Kumlander, Bill and Cathy Taylor and Jeff Clark plotted a 5K route that would showcase the flat track area at the start of Saratoga’s unique tourist season. Appropriately,

the route begins at FasigTipton, flies by the Oklahoma Training Track with its view of galloping horses, and then winds around over 40 intersections highlighting residential areas, formerly viewed only as potential trackside parking places.

Jeff Clark’s connection with Saratoga horses extends well beyond Silk’s 20 years however.

His grandfather, John Porter, bred and drove harness track horses and in fact won the first race held at the Saratoga Harness Track. Jeff would spend his summers helping at the farm, and his dad, Jack Clark, a professor at SUNY Cobleskill, also trained horses while his sister, Mary, raised colts to finance her college education. So it was natural that

he should look to these equine athletes for inspiration.

In the search for the third part of the athletic equation, the cause of the Special Olympians seemed a natural fit. Jeff had always appreciated the fact that New York Special Olympics funneled all fundraising proceeds back to the athletes themselves and not into fancy corporate perks.

In October 2013, Jeff, a nonsmoker, became ill with Agent Orange-related lung cancer and succumbed in May 2014, yet another long-term Vietnam War victim. After his death, our friend Maryanne McNamara, who often drove him to chemo appoints, told me he said, “You know, I’ve lived a good life and I feel satisfied if this is my time to go. I just feel bad about leaving Laura.” His optimism, everpresent smile and genuine desire Continued on pg 47.

All Outdoors Water, Water Everywhere

by Tim Blodgett for Saratoga TODAY One’s thoughts become hazy and one’s body gets lazy when the heat and humidity of July climbs north of ninety. With August promising more of the same, you may find yourself searching for relief from the heat and the frenetic activity that this year’s meet at the Saratoga Race Course will bring to town. Many thousands of tourists and horse racing fans will visit Saratoga Springs over the course of the next month and a half. They will bring the excitement of discovery as they explore the many wonders that Saratoga Springs and the surrounding area has to offer as well as providing a welcome boost to the local economy. The track is going to take center stage as it always does this time of year with the celebration moving downtown after the day’s final race has been run. The carnival-like atmosphere of race season is intoxicating but sometimes, you need to take a break from the festivities and find peace away from the crowd.

Staying Hydrated There’s more than one meaning to the above term. Obviously, it’s important to drink plenty of fluids when the weather is warm but often the fluids we choose end up making us pay for temporary elation with an extended period of regret. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy partaking in merriment and adult beverages now and again but the type of hydration I’m referring to is found away from the downtown hustle and bustle. There’s an abundance of fishing holes just a short drive from downtown that are full of eager fish just waiting for you to

tempt them. Two lakes lie within the city limits and are both worth casting more than a glance at.

Saratoga Lake has long been drawing fishermen from near and far with an excellent reputation for providing anglers with fast action and big fish.

Northern pike and walleye have retreated to deeper, cooler water and tend to be tight lipped this time of the year, but if you fish the weed lines in about 15 feet of water, you may be rewarded with a rod bending battle and possibly a fish fry at the end of the day.

Walleye will strike lures that dive 6 to 10 feet that are cast or trolled in these areas during the day but they often bite better around sundown and after dark. If you fish at night, you will beat the heat but you need to make sure that you have the proper lights to stay visible and legal. Pike tend to feed more actively during the day but will likely be hiding out tight to the bottom in the deeper weeds waiting for unwary minnows to swim close by so they can dash quickly out of cover, grab their prey and return to their cool hiding spot. Live bait works as well as anything but you need to put it right on top of them when they’re loafing about.

They like big food so throw large, flashy lures that mimic the minnows they eat to cover more water and increase your chance of catching one. Just remember to handle them with care if you don’t intend to keep them.

Largemouth bass are the fish most anglers are fishing for now.

They are willing participants and will strike almost any type of lure you present to them. Bass are comfortable in water topping out at 80 degrees or more and will bite any time of the day.

Early mornings and evenings are the best time to fish if explosive top water action is what thrills you. Old school lures or their modern descendants work equally well at enticing hungry bass to erupt from the depths.

Pop-Rs, Zara Spooks, Buzz baits and the venerable Jitterbug are all good choices when the morning mist is still on the water. The rising sun will send the bass to the cover of thick weeds so you will have to change tactics if you fish midday. Texas rigged plastic

worms and jigs are the lures of choice when fishing the thick stuff. If the weeds are scattered and patchy, make a long cast and slowly work the lure all the way back. If you think you’re working it slowly, slow down some more. Pay close attention to your line and any resistance or taps you feel. Some of the biggest bass I’ve caught barely hit hard enough to feel, they were just there. Really thick weeds require even more patience and a boat to work effectively. Make short casts or pitch your lure into the small gaps in the weeds, letting the lure sink to the bottom. Most weeds are less thick below than above and that is likely where the bass are going to be. Get the lure through the salad to where the fish are hiding and hold on, a lunker may try to take the rod out of your hands.

Lake Lonely is the other lake in town. It’s much smaller than its neighbor but big fish swim there and is much less busy than the big lake. Access is at Lake Lonely Boat Livery on Crescent Ave. You can visit the proprietor, Bill Parry, and rent a rowboat to fish the lake. If you have your own boat, Bill has a boat launch and he will give you the latest tips for a successful day on the water away from the crowd.

My new local favorite fishing spot is the Hudson River in Schuylerville. Whether you’re shore bound or you have a boat to fish from, access is not a problem. Boaters can use the public launch just off the main drag on Towpath Road. The launch is one of the best in the area with plenty of parking and it’s free! The launch is never crowded which amazes me because I honestly don’t know where a fisherman can find a better fishery without driving hundreds of miles roundtrip. Bass fishermen can have epic days. Pike fishermen have the chance to catch the fish of their dreams. Kids can catch enough pan fish to wear them out. Walleye abound in the flowing waters and bite day and night.

For a change of pace, pack a picnic; grab a lantern, lawn chair, a few flashlights and plan to spend an evening under the stars fishing for catfish. They grow big and strong in the river’s current and

are always hungry. Night crawlers, live bait, cut bait, dough bait, chicken liver…. Heck, even hotdogs will work for catfish and the fishing couldn’t be simpler. Bait your hook, add enough weight to get it out to deeper water and so it holds in the current and hang on. You’ll have bullhead twitch your rod tip as they sample your bait but a catfish will take your bait and try to steal your rod too.

I may still be a novice ‘catfisherman’, but I’ve seen how they take a bait and have heard plenty of stories about inattentive anglers losing their gear in the murky water. I recommend using a bait runner style reel if you plan on putting your rod in a holder or at least loosen your drag so the line can peel easily from the spool when that big ‘ol cat strikes. If

you are wondering where you might go for this type of action, I suggest Lock 5 just off Rt. 4 and 32 in Schuylerville. There’s parking and plenty of places to fish, day and night at Lock 5 and the Hudson River Crossing recreation area located at the lock.

You never know what you may catch when you cast your line into the mighty Hudson’s water!

Remember to release any fish you catch in the Hudson, keeping them is prohibited in this section of the river.

You might find my idea of proper hydration a little different from yours, but I think we can agree that it is just as important to one’s well being as drinking eight glasses of water a day and a whole lot more fun.

He was, in fact a winner, and oh so brave in the attempt.

While he was sick, his good friend Peter Goutos, now of Firecracker4 Productions and current Silks Race Director along with his partner, Bob Vanderminden, took up the

reins. With Jeff ’s passing Peter honored his friend by dedicating the event in his honor. Last year, in fact, was the first time I had ever run the race, having previously spent all my time behind the scenes. Peter insisted I abandon my post and honor Jeff by following along with the crowd.

It was wonderful to feel the

support and see everyone enjoying the day.

This year, my son-in-law Darren Suarez and grandchild Emilia ran alongside. Daughter number 1, Julie, along with Granddaughter number 1, Elena, were already committed to working the Food Bank Farm. Jeff would have been proud. I made

it to the start line with seconds to spare, pinning my bib as I ran, looking for all the world like one of those folks who arrive minutes before and not at 5 o’clock in the morning! There was one thing missing. Before any race, Jeff would always shout, “Shoelace check!” Sounds silly, loosens the tension, but has a practical

purpose. Without the shoelace check call, Emilia headed down East Street with two sets of wandering laces, which we naturally had to pause to re-tie. I know Jeff was up there shaking his head and laughing!
