Vagrancy: A Solution-Based Approach

by Rebecca Davis Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — The conversation surrounding homelessness and vagrancy has exploded in the last few months, even weeks. However, it’s not just conversation anymore – action is happening now.

On Monday, May 16, dozens of prominent community members met at the City Center to brainstorm real, tangible solutions for homelessness.

From business owners and leaders of non-profit charities to Mayor Yepsen and others in local government, everyone came together that evening and used their individual skills and expertise to develop a plan.

was present at the solutions session on Monday. Using his experiences of helping the impoverished around the globe and his many nights working at Code Blue, he already has a lot of great ideas for how to solve the issue of homelessness. However, he wants to make sure the solution is grounded in understanding and empathy.

“These are issues we have to remedy, but the concern is that it’s done with a compassionate hand.

There is a lot of misinformation out there – a lot of prejudice and hatred that is not based in fact,” explained Bertrand. “There has been a lot of talk about the difference between vagrants and the homeless, but the bottom line is that they’re people. First and foremost they are human beings.”

by Arthur Gonick Saratoga TODAY SARATOGA SPRINGS — Kara Storti has been blessed with the gift of articulation – the ability not only to communicate – but to reach into her own soul, and touch yours. This has been evident since her high school (Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake) days, when, as a young songwriter, she dazzled audiences with her original, introspective lyrics, a sweet, yet powerful voice, and melodies that grabbed you and wouldn’t let go.

It was obvious that, despite not being old enough to buy a drink at some of the places she played music (such as Gaffney’s, during songwriter nights) with her band, or solo behind the keyboard, that she could more than hold her own with seasoned veterans twice her age, maybe more.

There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that saw her perform that she would be a pro – and a successful one at that.

Fast forward just over a decade, and we find that Kara has done just that – become a professional who has taken her craft of writing to a new level, with the publication of her third novel, Tripping Back Blue, that will have its New York release next Thursday at Northshire Bookstore.

This ‘homecoming’ to her native area will include reading, Q + A, and book signing.

In addition to being a novelist, Kara has applied her craft to professional outlets. After high school, she migrated to Boston (her current

“I love medical writing,” Kara noted, “After Lawrence Summers left/got booted at Harvard, I stayed

around for a bit during the search for his successor in the Provost’s office, but I needed to get more stimulation from writing.” This came from the medical field, but more importantly from writing fiction as well.

GE to pay $5.3M to Saratoga County Water Authority BALLSTON SPA — Under a settlement unanimously approved by the Saratoga County Board of Supervisors at their Tuesday, May 17 meeting, General Electric will pay the Saratoga County Water Authority $5.3 million to settle a

federal lawsuit over costs tied to the PCB pollution of the Hudson River. The Water Authority will vote on accepting the settlement at their meeting later this month.

The lawsuit was originally filed in the U.S.

New York State Burn Ban Lifted ALBANY — The residential burn ban in New York State has officially been lifted as of Monday, May 16. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation extended the usual May 14 deadline by a week; however the extension is no longer in effect. The lift of the burn

ban means that campfires, recreational fires and outdoor cooking fires are no longer prohibited. The DEC still advises that those who plan to use these types of fires should take precautions and use existing campfire rings and build fires away from dry grass or overhanging branches.

Prison Inmate Charged after being Caught With Pills BALLSTON SPA — An inmate at the Saratoga County Correctional Facility has been charged with promoting prison contraband as of Thursday, May 12. Ambjor Keefe, 37, of Waterford allegedly had 14

pills hidden in a plastic bag in her sock in April while imprisoned at the Saratoga County Correctional Facility. Keefe was charged with promoting prison contraband.

6 Anthony J. Rogers VICTORY MILLS — Anthony J. Rogers, 61, a resident of Victory Mills, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2016 at Saratoga Hospital after a long illness.

Born April 9, 1955 in Catskill, NY, he was the son of the late Charles and Ruth Tucker Rogers.

Mr. Rogers worked for several area restaurants and most recently at the Saratoga Casino. He played Santa Claus at family functions for forty years. He enjoyed gardening, camping and family vacations.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Douglas Rogers.

Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Jackie Mayer Rogers of Victory Mills; his foster son, Joseph Sesselman and his daughter Autumn of Saratoga Springs; six brothers, David, Donald, Daniel, Herbert, Lyle, and Joseph Rogers, five sisters, Sally Lockwood, Janie Holmes, Mary Ramsey, Donna Fish, and Julie Mabb; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Friends gathered on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at Flynn Bros., Inc. Funeral Home in Schuylerville to remember him. Services were held immediately after at the funeral home. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Carryl Elizabeth Cudney SARATOGA SPRINGS — Life-long Saratoga resident Carryl Elizabeth Cudney passed away peacefully at her home in Woodlawn Commons on Sunday May 15, 2016. She was 95 years old.

Born on December 23, 1920, in Saratoga Springs, she was the daughter of the late Wayne Sturdevan and Florence Elizabeth Bailey.

Carryl married her husband James E. Cudney on January 5, 1946. In 1952 James and Carryl started Cudney’s Launderers and Dry Cleaners in Saratoga Springs. The family continues to operate Cudney’s today, along with longtime manager Joyce Ure. Mrs. Cudney was a member of the Saratoga First Baptist Church on Washington Street, Saratoga

She is predeceased by her husband James E. Cudney, her daughter Pamela, granddaughter Tamara, brothers Donald Sturdevan and Winston Sturdevan and her sister Luella Olds.

Calling hours will be held this morning, Friday May 20, 2016 at the Tunison Funeral Home, 105 Lake Ave. in Saratoga Springs from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Saturday, May 21, 2016 from 10 to 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 45 Washington Street in Saratoga Springs. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at the First Baptist Church.

Burial will be with her husband, daughter and granddaughter at Greenridge Cemetery in Saratoga Springs at the convenience of the family.

The family would like to thank Carryl’s loyal friends from First Baptist Church, Pati Wade and the staff members of Woodlawn Commons, and the wonderful caregivers from Home Health Care Partners who saw her through the last few months with dignity and grace. She will be remembered for her faith, love for family and many friends, and her never-ending smile.

Richard “Dick” Retzlaff SARATOGA SPRINGS — Richard “Dick” Retzlaff, age 79, passed away on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on November 8, 1936 in Troy, the son of the late Carl L. Retzlaff and Alma Lake.

Richard was an Electrical Designer for General Electric in Schenectady for many years. In his retirement, he was able to enjoy all the things he loved which included playing golf, being a member of the Knights of Columbus Golf Club, hunting in his early years and being an avid Giants and Yankees fan. He enjoyed traveling with dear friends, reading, watching sports and the stock market, and looked forward to his yearly trips to Florida. He will be deeply missed by all.

He is survived by his loving wife Donna (Jenks), son, Scott Retzlaff (Mary), daughters, Lori RetzlaffSmith (Stephen), Tara LaFave (Jeffrey), brothers, Thomas Retzlaff, Stephen Retzlaff (Judy), grandchildren, Colleen Chambers (Kevin), Morgan Mabie, Dylan LaFave, Tyler Retzlaff, great-grandchildren, Noah and Adrien Chambers, several nieces and nephews, brother and sister-in-law Larry and Betty Jenks, very dear friends Kent (Bill) and Paulla Lake, and his new feline friend Callie.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon, on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Compassionate Funeral Care, 402 Maple Ave., Rte 9 and Marion Ave. in Saratoga Springs. Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the funeral home.

Interment following the service in honor of Richard will be at the Ballston Spa Village Cemetery, Ballston Ave. in Ballston Spa. The family wishes to express a sincere “Thank you” to all the staff on A3 at Saratoga Hospital, and a special “Thank you” to Dr’s Mastrianni, Liebers, Delmonte and staff for all their compassionate care and support throughout his illness.

Lorena B. Hall SCHUYLERVILLE — Lorena B. Hall, 98, a former resident of Victory Mills, passed away Friday, May 13, 2016 at Washington Center in Argyle.

Born January 21, 1918 in Smithville, NY, she was the daughter of the late Peter and Alphonsine Periard Barton.

Week of May 20– May 26, 2016 Mrs. Hall had worked for several years at United Board and Carton in Victory Mills. She was a communicant of Notre Dame-Visitation Church in Schuylerville and was a member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, William Hall; her brother, Urban Barton; and sisters, Orea Stewart, Dola Hall, Veronica Adams, Shirley Aiardo, and Doris Chiperno.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass was celebrated Wednesday, May 18, 2016 at Notre Dame-Visitation Church in Schuylerville with Rev. Martin Fisher, officiating.

Burial followed in Notre Dame Cemetery.

There were no calling hours.

He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Bryant University in Rhode Island and retired from the Bank of America in 2007.

Devoted to caring for his parents in their later years, he was long beloved and will be greatly remembered by his many lifelong friends.

A service in remembrance of his life will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, 2016 at the William J. Serge S. Shishik, III GREENFIELD CENTER — Serge S. Shishik, III, 43, of Greenfield Center, passed away on May 14, 2016 after a valiant 18-month fight against lung cancer. Serge was born in Troy, raised in Waterford, and graduated from Shenendehowa High School in 1990. In 1995, Serge followed in the footsteps of his mother, the late Nancy Laiacona Shishik, and several other family members, in graduating from Albany College of Pharmacy. Serge built a highly successful career with GlaxoSmith Kline, Inc. as a pharmaceutical sales representative and later as a community pharmacist for Rite Aid in Saratoga Springs, before deciding to switch careers and start his own successful recruiting company, RecruitingYou. Serge then brought his lifelong dream to fruition when he left the corporate world to follow a passion. His goal was to bring to market premium spirits that were reasonably priced, locally sourced, and crafted through an eco-friendly process. Serge’s vision for excellence began with extensive research into the distilled liquor industry that found him visiting private distilleries as far away as Kentucky with his Dad at his side. Serge carefully studied the marketplace to find his niche.

He then envisioned what his own distillery would look like, built

it with his friends and family, and boldly launched Saratoga Courage Distillery. In 2014 the distillery began production of its award-winning vodka, Pick Six, and a year later went on to create the popular Devil’s Den Moonshine. These locally made products quickly earned regional and national accolades.

Again, he found overwhelming success through his ingenuity and hard work.

Time spent with Serge was filled with laughter and amazement. His ability to tell a story remains unparalleled. The ease with which he could captivate you with detailed events of his life and bring you to tears of laughter was constant and seemingly never-ending. Serge’s innate confidence, paired with his brilliance and varied experience, enabled him to solve problems and to empower and inspire those around him. Serge’s endless compassion for others fueled his support of many local causes and his volunteer work with The Giving Circle, rebuilding homes destroyed after Hurricane Katrina.

Serge’s love and loyalty to his family was absolute.

His wife, Holly Ruotolo Shishik, his three children, Serge, Cory and Poppy; father, Serge S. Shishik II; sister, Serene Shishik Mastrianni and husband Chris and their daughter Michelena; along with his aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous other family members and friends, will miss his generosity, humor, love and spirit.

No calling hours are scheduled.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at 10 a.m. at St. Peter’s Church, 241 Broadway in Saratoga Springs. A reception for family and friends will follow.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Memorial Day Celebration Parade Follows a New Route SARATOGA SPRINGS — The City of Saratoga Springs invites the community to the 2016 Memorial Day Parade and Commemorative Ceremony on Thursday, May 26 from 6:30-8 p.m. The event will unite the Saratoga Springs City Council, Veterans Organizations and the citizens of Saratoga Springs in honor of those who have given their lives for our country.

The Memorial Day parade will follow a new route this year, beginning at the corner of Union Avenue and Nelson Avenue and continuing to Regent Street, and culminate with a closing ceremony in Greenridge Cemetery to include a welcome by Mayor Joanne Yepsen, Presentation of Colors by the Navy, the National Anthem performed by

the Ballston Spa Band, a Keynote Speech by Commander Elvis T. Mikel, United States Navy, and dignitaries to include Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner, Congressman Paul Tonko and Senator Kathy Marchione.

Highlights of the parade include local veterans organizations including the police and fire departments, local marching bands from all across Saratoga County, floats and vintage and classic cars.

operate an innovative business in a welcoming and supportive community. We hope that our commitment to intentional food sourcing and promoting the philosophy that every plate matters made a positive and healthy difference in the lives and appetites of our loyal and enthusiastic customers.

This past weekend was truly a party atmosphere filled with delicious food, music and memories. It was a joyful and bittersweet celebration and we are thankful to all that stopped by in person, or joined us in spirit. Vagrancy: A Solution Based Approached Continued from front page.

While Bertrand is not opposed to seeing “aggressive panhandling” barred from Broadway, he first wants to make sure there is infrastructure in place so that panhandling doesn’t even have to be an option.

One big step in the right direction would be to build a drop-in center.

“People will tell you that Shelters of Saratoga (SOS) is a homeless shelter, but it’s not. SOS is a programdriven dry shelter,” said Bertrand.

“What we need is a drop-in center – a place that’s safe where all agencies in town can come together to provide mental health, medical and drug and alcohol support."

The drop-in center would also give homeless individuals an address, a necessity when applying for a job.

There is no middle step between living on the streets, perhaps as an addict, to SOS, where clients have to be completely sober and adhere to strict guidelines. That middle step is absolutely necessary for progress to happen, for people that are homeless to even seek help and to maintain it long-term.

There is another way of preventing and ending homelessness that cannot be driven home enough: the housing-first model. It’s all about providing affordable, accessible housing as the first step, which then makes it much easier to get individuals other services they need, such as case management, mental health and addiction services.

“If they have a home, they have something that is their own. They

have pride, hope and self-esteem again. They have something to live for and something to lose,” said Bertrand.

“Right now, they have nothing to lose.”

The housing-first model is also the most fiscally responsible solution.

In Denver, Colorado, their housingfirst initiatives saved the city over $15,700 per person each year in public costs such as emergency room visits and criminal justice action.

To tackle housing-first here in Saratoga, Bertrand and other community members are currently working on developing “tiny houses” – small homes that would act as a transitional space for the homeless to get back on their feet. Communities across the country have already initiated tiny house programs, including those in Oregon and Texas, and have seen a lot of success.

“The plan would be to initially build 12 tiny homes. It could fit a single person or perhaps a mother and her children,” said Bertrand, who noted that the ideal location would be near the planned drop-in center.

Tiny homes would cost about $2,500, and according to Bertrand, sponsors are already eager to be a part of it. The tiny houses would be built to look just like Victorian homes, only on a smaller scale. The goal is to get them to fit into the environment and overall feel of Saratoga.

“It would be the first step up.

Built into it would be responsibilities, such as finding employment and going to rehab,” said Bertrand. “From there they can go to SOS, then move to affordable housing, then from there, get back on their feet.”

Bertrand is not the only Saratoga resident stepping up and taking action. Harvey Fox, the owner of Fox Jewelers on Broadway, introduced the idea of having donation boxes set up through the city. These donation boxes would deter people from giving money to the homeless directly (which could be spent on an addiction rather than necessities), and instead, all of the money would go toward non-profits and programs that help the homeless population.

“With these donation boxes, there would be no administrative fees. 100 percent goes to charitable services for the homeless,” said

Fox. “The Chamber of Commerce is going to pick up the money and send a check weekly or monthly to an approved shelter.”

Local locksmiths are working to make special locks for the boxes.

Artists from Saratoga Arts will paint them to make them stand out and be aesthetically pleasing. Each box will also have a plaque explaining what they are for and where the money goes.

“We’re currently looking for sponsors for the boxes,” added Fox. “We already have six of the 12 sold.

We’re trying to get total involvement from all people in the community.

The best part is that Saratoga is so compassionate – they really want to help.”

Bottom line is that ending homelessness is not an easy or quick process. However, for those who are concerned and want to make a direct impact now, Bertrand advocates volunteering, such as at SOS or Code Blue.

“Talk to the homeless, get their perspective. Put a human face on the issue,” said Bertrand. “Just don’t look down on someone because they’re sitting on the street. You don’t know the sufferings that led him there.”

Preakness Prep: Two Weeks Ago in Louisville?

by Brendan O’Meara for Saratoga TODAY Preakness 141, at the Xanadu that is Pimlico Race Course, is set for this weekend and electricians are hard at work trying to connect the wires on this one. Not literally,

of course, but this race for some reason feels like a formality, no diodes.

Two weeks ago, in this very space, your correspondent played prosecutor in the People v. Nyquist and got his royal hind quarters handed to him. It’s taken the greater part of 10 days to remove the foot from said mouth.

Only three Derby colts took the flight, or some other manner of horse transport, to Baltimore for this second jewel.

The winner (Nyquist), the placer (Exaggerator) and, um, Lani will start in the Preakness. Why only three from the Derby?

One reason, and maybe the most sensible, is the two-week turnaround from the Derby

– which is a race that on its own is the outlier of outliers on the racing calendar. Ten furlongs, a distance few of these horses will ever run again and 20 horses, a field no horse will ever see again.

So, as an aside, the winner of the Derby, while by all accounts a fine athletic specimen, may not necessarily be the truest of champions. See Exhibits Mine That Bird (who never won another race), Orb (who never won again) and Super Saver (Ugh). There are also others who prove to be quite good, like last year’s 1,200-pound gorilla in the paddock.

Anyway…

The second reason could be that Nyquist scared off other contenders, which is a feather in his ball cap.

These two reasons are viable, for sure, but with a purse of $1.5 million, why not take a stab if you ran in the Derby?

Derby runners tend to run not just good but like ‘hella good’ in the Preakness.

One horse that is decidedly un-scared of Nyquist is Exaggerator, though he’s seen nothing but Nyquist’s brown rear end in each of their encounters.

“Obviously numbers-wise, horse for horse-wise, it's tough to think we can beat him, right?”

Desormeaux said Tuesday morning in a press release. “But the strongest attribute Exaggerator has is his ability to recover. As you know, this Preakness is run back in two weeks. That's not normal in this day and age to run a horse back that quickly.”

But in this case, maybe more trainers should.

Going back 10 years, let’s examine how well Derby runners perform in the Preakness. Bolded horses ran in the Derby: 2006: Bernardini, Sweetnorthernsaint, Hemingway’s Key, Brother Derek 2007: Curlin, Street Sense, Hard Spun, C.P. West 2008: Big Brown, Macho Again, Icabad Crane, Racecar Rhapsody 2009: Rachel Alexandra*, Mine That Bird, Musket Man, Flying Private 2010: Lookin at Lucky, First Dude, Jackson Bend, Yawanna Twist 2011: Shackleford, Animal Kingdom, Astrology, Dialed In 2012: I’ll Have Another, Bodemeister, Creative Cause, Zetterholm 2013: Oxbow, Itsmyluckyday, Mylute, Orb

2014: California Chrome, Ride on Curlin, Social Inclusion, General a Rod 2015: American Pharoah, Tale of Verve, Divining Rod, Dortmund *: She won the Oaks the day before the Derby, so let’s just call it even.

Sparing you the math, 68 percent of the top four horses in the Preakness ran in the Derby.

Desormeaux noted how quickly Exaggerator recovers.

We never see horses run back in two weeks, certainly not at this level. These three-year-olds are so carefully campaigned heading into the Derby that they are, by some accounts, quite fresh, unless you’re a D. Wayne Lukas trainee, in which case you have several more miles on your tires than the manufacturer recommends.

Running back in two weeks after sometimes taking six, five and four weeks between races makes the Derby essentially a taxing training run. The ensuing two weeks between Louisville and Baltimore, all a trainer must do is keep the horse sound, jog, gallop and walk him. The fitness is there.

So you don’t even need to look at the past performances in whatever past-performance provider you choose. Whether it’s Beyer Speed Figures, Rags or Thoro-Graph numbers, you can put all three on the board in whatever order you choose.

New shooters like Stradivari, out of the Todd Pletcher Industrial Complex, and Cherry Wine, take aim at Nyquist too.

Stradivari is the biggest wild card of the race. That, and maybe the rain.

But one thing is certain: The Derby runners will show up, no handicapping necessary.

Ganna Fedorova, 27, of The Wishing Well restaurant is breaking through that association of age with wine. Fedorova became a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers of the Americas' chapter after passing a three-part exam this April in Chicago, IL. Areas tested include a knowledge and proficiency in blind tasting, theory and service.

“Our general preconceived notion when we think of a sommelier is it should be a greyhaired man who looks at you like you don’t know anything

and he knows everything,” joked Fedorova. “But now the people in my industry put more effort into delivering knowledgeable service expertise, disregarding those ideas that I need to be old and male. The depth of my knowledge increased, and after receiving my certification, now we have an outside, very credible source saying yes, Ganna knows what she does.”

Wishing Well owner Bob Lee speaks very highly of Fedorova.

“Ganna has taken our wine program to a higher level,” said Lee, “doubling the number of options we offer our guests and making the choices more interesting and approachable. Because of her passion and enthusiasm, our guests are experiencing great small production wines from some of the world’s lesser known wine regions – wines that truly complement our menu. We are fortunate to have her knowledge and enthusiasm here.”

Fedorova grew up in Ukraine.

She holds a degree in philosophy and has worked in advertising and public relations. She came to the U.S. five years ago and started working in hospitality, eventually making her way from serving in an Indian restaurant to a dining room manager and on until she found her calling as a sommelier.

“After I started [at the Wishing Well] in June 2013,” said Fedorova, “I was amazed at how big the place is and how extensive the wine list, that such a big world was out there that I had no knowledge of, so I asked Bob what I should do, and he recommended me to get in touch with some of his distributors, and one was teaching wine classes.”

And so began her adventure in grapes. “I fell in love with wine and discovered how wine can express something that is not just food or taste, it expresses the winemaker’s personality, the land where it grows, and even the cultural background of where the wine comes from,” said Fedorova.

The training is fairly extensive in history, regions, cultures, and, of course, taste. “When preparing for an exam, especially the blind taste test, I was going to the wine store and buying cases of wine, 25 bottles at a time and

tasting them over the week. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not drinking all of them,” she laughed. “Most of them were donated to my friends.”

Fedorova believes that her newly obtained title will help her better satisfy an ever-growing interest in fine wines and spirits among The Wishing Well’s guests and elevate the wine culture in the region and Saratoga. The restaurant’s wine list of 200 wines and rotating selection of 14 wines by the glass reflect the commitment to pairing time honored culinary classics with world-class wines.

“Someone who works on the floor and works with the wine can be called a sommelier,” said Fedorova, “and there are a lot of great people in the region who have that role. There’s not a lot that have the certification, though, my title. I know there are many on the distribution side, but I don’t know of anyone else on the floor.”

Fedorova said being a sommelier is not about telling people what they should or shouldn’t like. “It’s not about imposing my opinion,” she said. “It’s to broaden my knowledge of what you like and have the expertise to offer what you might enjoy. The most challenging part, with all the knowledge I have accumulated, is to not be carried away thinking of obscure wines and regions. It doesn’t matter how much you know if you can’t satisfy your guests’ needs.”

The Wishing Well’s wine list is heavily focused on boutique family-owned wineries in the

U.S., particularly in California.

Fedorova says they produce some of the finest examples of cabernet, which pairs well with Wishing Well’s steaks.

“We also try to find wines from unknown regions, and let the guests taste them, because they are unfamiliar with them,” said Fedorova. “We try to bring those wines in by the glass so our guests can familiarize themselves with something they have no experience with, such as Greece or Portugal or new and emerging regions in the U.S.” The Court of Master Sommeliers was established to encourage improved standards of beverage knowledge and service and is considered the premier international examining body. According to its website, there are only 23 women in the U.S. who have achieved Master Sommelier status, a status Fedorova hopes to attain one day.

“I would definitely like to continue on this path, this is a serious passion,” said Fedorova. “I just think that knowing more will help me do better at what I do, particularly in providing the best service to my guests. I can’t emphasize enough how important it is in our industry.”

County Taxpayers Could Save $5M BALLSTON SPA — Saratoga County Treasurer Drew Jarosh announced this week that both major ratings agencies, S&P and Moody’s, improved the County’s bond ratings thereby providing the opportunity for Jarosh to refinance $33 million of debt, which may save County taxpayers up to $5 million over the next several years.

Moody’s affirmed the County’s “Aa2” bond rating and

removed the negative outlook it had applied in 2014. S&P’s went a step further and upgraded the County’s bond rating from “AA” to “AA+.”

Budgets Pass For Local Schools SARATOGA COUNTY – On Tuesday, May 17 communities across New York voted for their local school budgets. According to the NYS School Board Association, the voting was an overwhelming success, with 98.5 percent of all budgets passing.

See below for information about Saratoga County schools’ successful budget vote.

Saratoga Springs City School District Saratoga residents passed the $118,398,718 school budget proposal for the 2016-17 school year by a vote of 1,788 in favor to 360 opposed.

Residents also passed a $1,114,000 bus bond proposition by a vote of 1,745 in favor to 395 opposed as well as a $1,109,250 Capital Project proposition by a vote of 1,675 in favor to 460 opposed.

In addition, voters elected Heather Reynolds (1,375 votes), Brad Thomas (1,092 votes) and Jim Wendell (1,075 votes) to serve threeyear terms. Robert Shafer (1,064 votes) will serve a one-year term.

Ballston Spa Central School District The Ballston Spa community approved the district’s 2016-2017 budget proposal of $86,352,617 with an unofficial vote of 76 percent voting yes and 24 percent voting no (1134 -363).

The Board of Education candidates elected include Susan Filburn who received a total of

939 votes and Dottie Sellers who received a total of 837 votes.

Challenger Katie Thimineur received a total of 633 votes. The top two candidates will serve for a three-year term commencing in July 2016.

“We’re appreciative of the community’s support of the budget plan we put forward,” said Joseph P. Dragone, Ph.D., Superintendent of Ballston Spa CSD. “We will continue to balance fiscal responsibility while offering leading academic and co-curricular opportunities for our students.”

All of the additional propositions on the ballot were passed, including the Capital Improvement Plan, the replacement of school vehicles, the public library and the local recreation commission.

Galway Central Schools The annual school budget vote passed with 432 voting yes and 203 voting no. The Capital Project and Bus Proposition also passed. Melodye Eldeen was reelected to her second term on the Board of Education, and the board welcomes Michelle Bombard for her first term.

Schuylerville Central School District Schuylerville Central School District residents passed a $34.1 million budget for the 2016-17 school year by a vote of 361 to 60.

“We’re grateful to everyone who took time out of their busy

schedules to vote today,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Ryan Sherman. “This outcome will help ensure that our students will continue to receive a highquality education that our community can be proud of.”

The 2016-17 budget is 1.29 percent more than the budget for the current school year. It maintains the current education program with no increase in the school tax levy.

The bus leasing proposition passed by a vote of 362 to 57. It allows the district to lease nine 65-passenger buses, two 25-passenger buses and one handicap accessible bus for a five-year term.

The sole candidate on the ballot was elected to the Board of Education. Incumbent Michael Booth received 363 votes and will serve a five-year term.

In the public library board of trustees election, two residents were running for two available seats. Heidi Levin received 298 votes and Laura Dooley received 345 votes.

South Glens Falls Central School District South Glens Falls Central School District residents voted

to approve the district’s 201617 proposed budget with 864 voting in favor and 239 voting against it. The $56,590,273 million budget carries a 2.83 percent spending increase over the current year’s budget, and a 1.4 percent increase in the tax levy.

The tax levy increase is below the limit set by New York’s tax levy cap law.

Voters also approved a $496,489 proposition to purchase four 65-passenger school

buses and one 29-passenger bus with wheelchair option, with 853 voting in favor and 251 voting against it.

In addition, four candidates were elected to the board of education. The candidates who were elected are: Roger Fedele (676 votes); Jeffrey Riggi (648 votes); Nelson Charron (647 votes); and Thomas Kurtz (637 votes).

Nicholas Heald received 567 votes and Robert Amberger received 465 votes.

HVCC to Offer Programs at Malta TEC-SMART Facility Hudson Valley Community College will offer two Technology Enrichment Camps as well as Summer Academy programs in forensic science and geocaching this summer at its TEC-SMART extension center at 345 Hermes Road in Malta.

Designed to encourage

scientific experimentation and innovation in middle and high school students, each of the weeklong Technology Enrichment sessions will include daily modules that cover topics like design, engineering, electronics and energy conservation. Participants will work in teams to design and build structures, explore computeraided design and solve problems using technology.

The week-long middle school program, for students entering grades 6 - 8, will run August 8 12. The high school program, for students entering grades 9, 10 and 11, will run August 1 through 5.

Skidmore College Names New Dean

SARATOGA SPRINGS— Skidmore College has named Cerri Annette Banks as its new dean of students and vice president for student affairs.

Currently serving as vice president for student affairs and dean of the college at Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, Banks will begin her new position at Skidmore on August 1.

“We are truly thrilled to welcome Cerri Banks, who brings an extraordinary level of experience in the increasingly complex world of

student affairs,” said Skidmore President Philip A. Glotzbach.

“She is uniquely qualified to lead a division that oversees every facet of our students’ lives outside of the classroom.

Her background and insights will be invaluable in the President’s Cabinet and across our campus.”

Banks will oversee 134 employees and five offices within Student Affairs, including athletics, campus life, career development, student diversity programs, and student academic services.

She replaces Interim Dean and Vice President Gail Cummings-Danson, who held the role for the past academic year after the departure of former Dean Rochelle W. Calhoun for a vice presidency at Princeton University.

Cummings-Danson will return to her previous role as Skidmore’s athletics director in the fall.

“I want to thank Gail Cummings-Danson for her extraordinary service stepping

up to the interim role while also maintaining her duties as AD,” said Glotzbach. “During this past year, she has helped us deal with a number of daunting challenges, and she has done so with intelligence, wisdom and grace.”

Banks has held the Mount Holyoke position since July 2011. She oversaw a staff of 70 and a $5.4 million annual budget; in addition, she served on the President’s Cabinet, the Strategic Planning Steering Committee, the Academic Priorities Committee, and numerous other high-level boards.

“I have enjoyed a wonderful five years at Mount Holyoke,” she said, “and the opportunity to lead student affairs at Skidmore brings all of my scholarly work and college experiences to fruition.” She added, “I am so very excited about joining the leadership team at such an excellent institution, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish.”

SARATOGA SPRINGS — On Wednesday, May 11, The Saratoga County Chamber of Commerce joined students, faculty, parents, and friends of Saratoga Independent School for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the school’s new academic wing. Students made pinwheels to help decorate the entrance to the new wing, and John Marcantonio, Membership Director for The Saratoga County Chamber, provided the ribbon and ceremonial scissors.

Turning Today’s Scraps Into Tomorrow’s Topsoil

by Sadie Ross for Saratoga TODAY If you visit one of the 40,000 farms in New York State, chances are that you’ll be greeted by a smell that evokes pungent goodness. It is neither the scent of a fresh harvest nor the fragrance of bee and butterfly attracting flowers. Rather, it is compost, the rotting remains of yard waste, food scraps, and other foodstuffs that reside in heaps, barrels, or massive bins, breaking down slowly to produce new fertilizer for farmers to work into and revitalize their current topsoil.

This is compost, a mixture of decaying organic substances typically used to amend soil. When added to a garden, compost improves the organic matter content of the soil, leading to increased water and nutrient holding capacity.

The best news about compost is that it is easy to make in your own backyard. Compost comes in three varieties: yard waste, food scraps, and table scraps (which include such items as meat bones and leftovers that are heavy with oil, butter, or other additives.)

While local farmers regularly incorporate table scraps into their compost piles, I advise that home composters stick to yard waste and food scraps. This is because home compost piles rarely get to a high enough temperature to guarantee that other table scraps will be effectively sterilized.

Yard waste – leaves, grass clippings, perennial cuttings – can be left to decompose quite simply in a heap. Chicken wire or wooden pallets placed on three sides keeps the heap contained so the center of the pile remains hot, allowing the material to decompose. One partition area can serve as the pile that is being left to “cook” and a second can be used for actively accepting materials. Both piles should be

placed in the sun and turned with a pitchfork whenever the center has been hot enough long enough to decompose some of the core.

One of the best ways to compost food scraps is in a barrel, either homemade or purchased. Place such items as vegetable peels, fruit rinds and relatively clean napkins and paper plates into containers that have screens at the bottom to allow air to come into the container and lets the water created from decomposing materials out. The container should be easy to spin to allow for the materials to get turned over and mixed up but be sealed enough to keep animals out. Many people prefer to use

a food grade container if their compost is going to be used in their vegetable garden.

Some rules for good compost are smell, color, and texture.

Good compost should smell like the earth, be dark brown or black in color, and be somewhat clumpy in texture. Basically, to make good compost there should be more “brown stuff ” than “green stuff ”.

But keep in mind that green stuff has a lot of water in it, so you can add a lot of cut leafy perennials and grass clippings compared to dry brown leaves. Food compost will almost always need additional materials. Paper towels, cardboard, egg cartons, pizza boxes and other food grade “brown things” will add the carbon and structure necessary.

Kale Salad with Micro Greens Ingredients Adapted from Faring Well Salad: 1 bunch of Kale, stems removed and chopped 3 carrots, grated 1 bunch of radishes, tops and bottoms removed and thinly sliced 1 bunch of micro greens, (e.g. pea shoots, radish shoots) ¼ cup sunflower seeds Tahini Dressing: ¼ cup fresh lemon juice 1 cup tahini 1 ¼ cup water 1 green garlic, minced ¼ teaspoon cayenne

Directions For dressing: Blend ingredients together and adjust to taste. Recipe will make 2 ½ cups. Store in a tightly sealed glass jar in the refrigerator for up to one week.

For salad: Toss ingredients together. Plate servings and drizzle on dressing and top with sunflower seeds (or pepitas).

Options: add goat cheese, use favorite dressing.

The Friends of the Saratoga Market will soon begin accepting compost from home gardeners to donate to local farmers and community gardeners. If you are unable to use your own compost, please consider offering it free of charge to the Friends.

In the meantime, here are some basic tips for getting to know compost:

Yard waste: Any material that comes from a vegetable or flower garden or from the lawn. Herbaceous materials are preferred but small sticks and twigs will decompose if left long enough. Weeds are also considered yard waste and can be put into the compost pile.

Kitchen scraps: Anything that comes from the kitchen during food preparation. This is often referred to as pre-consumer food waste. Meats and dairy products should be avoided in a home compost bin. Vegetable scraps, fruit rinds, molded bread and coffee rinds are all food waste.

Table scraps: Anything that comes off a kitchen table after a meal. This is generally a type of compost best handled by large composting facilities. Uneaten rolls, left over salad without dressing or untouched apple slices are ok to add to a home compost pile, but if it was on someone's plate or was cooked with oils you generally want to put it in the trash.

Boont? Bundt…Boont? bowl combine flour, baking soda and salt. Slowly add dry ingredients to butter, sugar and egg mixture. Mix in chocolate, beets and vanilla. Blend thoroughly.

Pour into prepared pan. Tap gently on countertop to remove air bubbles. Bake for 45-55 minutes.

Remove from oven when toothpick inserted into densest part of cake comes out clean. Let cool on

Among my choice films is “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” that also has one my favorite movies scenes. The classic scene from the movie is when Maria Portokales receives a bundt cake from the mother of her future son-in-law. Being cordial yet trying to understand what she is receiving, Maria glances at her daughter Toula, that elicits a back and forth dialog; “Boont?

Bundt…Boont? Bundt. BOONT? BUNDT.....OH, IT’S A CAKE! There’s a hole in this cake!”

Bundt cakes are a very delicious gift to give when going to see family or a friend. The bundt cake became popular in the 50’s and 60’s. The bundt pan has become America’s best selling cake pan (according to Nordic Ware) to create a no-fuss cake. It is a perfect cake to serve a crowd and easy to slice.

Bundt cake pans are cake pans that are usually 10” – 12” in diameter and are 5” deep with a hole in the center. This ensures that deep cakes can bake evenly. They usually have fluted or ridged designs to make your cake look impressive.

Bundt pans were derived from ceramic German Kugelhopf pans, which bake tall, round and (usually) yeasted sweet breads or cakes. The cast aluminum version was trademarked in 1950 by the founder of NordicWare, the largest and certainly most well known maker of bundtshaped pans. The pans were not popular with bakers at first, but after the Tunnel of Fudge cake – which was baked in a bundt pan -won 2nd in the 1966 Pillsbury

Bake-Off, sales of the pan took off and it is now one of the best selling pans in North America, with over 60 million sold. It is easy to see why, because the cakes are very stylish and, unlike layered cakes, look impressive without needing a drop of frosting. Plus, the NordicWare Bundt pans are made in the U.S.A. There are tens of thousands of recipes out there calling for bundt pans, and you won’t find another pan that can do the job as well.

There are many other uses for bundt pans. You can bake any cake, meatloaf (fill center with mashed potatoes), various breads including Monkey bread or garlic bread, and jello! Stop

Chocolate Beet Cake Prep Time: 0:15 Bake Time: 0:45 Yields: 12-14 servings Ingredients • 2/3 cup chocolate morsels • 1 cup butter • 1 1/2 cups packed brown sugar •3 eggs •2 cups pureed beets •1 teaspoon vanilla •2 cups flour •2 teaspoons baking soda •1/2 teaspoon salt

Prep and Instructions Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Spray or grease pan. Melt together chocolate and ¼ cup of butter. Cream together remaining butter and brown sugar. Beat in eggs one at a time. In another

rack for 10 minutes before turning out cake.

Next time you go to visit a friend or a “future family member” bring a bundt cake! Be patient if they do not totally understand what it is. Have fun with it and enjoy!!

Free Movies in the Park BALLSTON SPA — The Ballston Spa Business and Professional Association is proud to once again present its free Movies in the Park series at Wiswall Park, Front Street in the village of Ballston Spa. The series begins on June 3, with the hit movie “Inside Out.” Next is “Minions” showing on July 1.

The series ends with Disney’s 2015 version of “Cinderella” on August 5. The rain dates are June 4, July 2 and August 6.

The movies are projected onto the wall of the adjacent building and begin at approximately 8:30 pm (dusk). Movie snacks will be available courtesy of North Star Church.

Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to sit on to reserve their seats and enjoy the family friendly First Friday activities throughout town.

As part of the First Friday events on those nights, there will be a scavenger hunt throughout the Village with movie clues and characters “hiding”

within the local shops, restau-

rants and businesses. Scavenger hunt cards can be found at Creative Endeavors, located at 49 Front Street and at Wiswall Park. Scavenger hunt cards can be turned in to Strolling Village Artisans, located at 20 Washington Street, for children to receive their prize.

The Movies in the Park are presented by the BSBPA, a nonprofit, community organization committed to making the Village of Ballston Spa a better place to live and work, and to bringing quality arts and entertainment events for all ages to the community. SARATOGA SPRINGS – The Saratoga Springs Lions Club held a special luncheon celebration on Thursday, May 12 at Bravo Restaurant on Route 9 to honor four United States Military Veterans for their outstanding service to their country and community.

The four award recipients, chosen by the Lions Club own military veterans, served during World War ll, the Korean War, Vietnam, and Iraq/ Afghanistan.

The celebratory lunch is part of the Lions Club inaugural “Honor A Vet” program, a multi-phase effort to thank our veterans. The Saratoga Springs Lions Club is one of the largest service organizations in New York State. Its mission and focus is on sight and hearing, diabetes, youth development and community service.

Pierre Zimmerman, who facilitates this group, has been working with people who have cancer for the last 12 years, leading support groups, mindfulness based stress reduction programs and spiritual retreats. He has been dedicating a large part of his life since then to supporting people on their journeys with cancer. Top-Notch Performers Play at Folk Festival All Memorial Day Weekend BALLSTON SPA — Known to its devoted fans for its combination of stellar performers, participatory events, informal jamming, and laidback family atmosphere, the annual GottaGetGon festival will be taking place at the Saratoga County Fairgrounds in Ballston Spa Memorial Day weekend, May 27 to May 30.

This year’s GottaGetGon lineup includes: Atwater-Donnelly (Atwater-donnelly.com) A husband-wife duo from Rhode Island blends appealing vocals with an astounding array of instruments, including the mountain dulcimer, old-time banjo, tin whistle, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, limberjacks, feet, and more. Their repertoire includes traditional American and Celtic folk songs, a capella pieces, oldtime gospel songs, dance tunes, and original works.

Charlie Parr (Charlieparr.com) A blistering finger-picker with keening, cut-through-thecrowd vocals. His heartfelt and plaintive original folk blues and traditional spirituals are rooted in

a humble upbringing as the son of two proud union meatpackers. He has thirteen albums to his name and plays more than 250 shows a year world-wide.

Ben Miller and Anita MacDonald (Benandanita.com) Queensbury native Ben Miller pursued his lifelong love of the pipes all the way to the University of Edinburgh, where he completed a post-grad degree at their School of Scottish studies.

Anita MacDonald adds the fiddle tunes and Gaelic songs of her native Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Heather Pierson Trio (Heatherpierson.com) At the seat of a piano or brandishing an acoustic guitar, tenor banjo, or melodica, Pierson moves seamlessly from New Orleans jazz

The Mostly-New Generation Folk Concert on Friday evening will feature 5 Mile String Band, Max Hatt with Edda Glass, and Canadian roots-rockers The Young Novelists.

The four main acts will perform both feature sets and a series of themed workshops. The weekend also includes an all-ages dance, a gospel sing, a swing band performance, and an all-voiceswelcome a Capella sing.

All events are under cover and happen rain or shine. The festival is wheelchair-accessible.

Weekend admission is $55 for adults (age 23 and up) and $30 for students (ages 18-22).

sense of humor (laced with a nice bit of deadpan sarcasm) fool you – this is gritty writing in the realism mode.

In Tripping, set in the urban, mostly inner-city areas of the Capital Region, Kara writes from the perspective of Finn, a male drug dealer and his own personal struggles with addiction, and life in general.

“The inspiration for this was real,” Kara said, “I was in a relationship with a guy from Burnt Hills who struggled with a drug problem. I had started to develop some of the themes of the book before I became aware about his battling these demons.

Actually, the main character began as a female, sort of a female Harry Potter, who defeated dark forces with components of magic. But once I did learn the truth about him, the words just flowed in a different direction. It turned out to be a catharsis of sorts for me.”

Some brief excerpts tell the tale: “All I’ve got to do is just get through this ordeal. Push through it; be a man…

“Stupid car. Stupid neighborhood. It’d be one thing if I lived in New York City, where there’s violence, sure, but tons of opportunity to become a better man. Not the case here. Instead I’m north of Albany, in rotten Dammer-f-ing-town, where there is no other side, where no great life is waiting for me, where the earth threw up and walked away.”

As a music programmer, Kara Storti made me look like a very discerning, smart judge of talent. You will feel the same way if you recommend her appearance next week to friends. As big a thrill as it is to spot

a young person with a gift, it’s even a bigger thrill to check in later on, and see how that ability and flair has blossomed. And that, simply, is what you have before you next Thursday.

27 PULSE Beekman Street Art Fair Coming in June

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Arts District on Beekman from Grand Ave to West Circular will be closed to traffic on Sunday, June 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for the fourth annual Beekman Street Art Fair. Over fifty juried artists will set up individual tents displaying fine art, including painting, photography, lithographs, pottery, jewelry, woodworking and fiber art.

This family-friendly event also features a children’s art tent and a large performance tent with music by Running the River, Nature of the Name, North and South Dakotas, and Grafton Celtic Trio. Also under

the big tent will be an open mic session hosted by Saratoga Children’s Theater.

The fair will further include street performers from Circus Theatricks and Balloon Gal Jenny, who will be strolling the streets to entertain.

Specialty food trucks will be parked on Oak St. throughout the day.

After many years of hard work and serving the community, the Arts District on Beekman, Inc. is now an official 501c3 entity. This designation allows the group to qualify for the Community Arts Grant as well as future sponsorships for neighborhood events.

The 4th Annual Art Fair is coordinated by residents and local artists Amejo Amyot, Cecilia Lockwood, Lara McBride, Ashley Roberts and Susan Rivers.

Roberts, who manages the music, entertainment and marketing aspects of the event said, “I’ve always been a huge fan of local art and live music. Having this opportunity to collaborate with our artists, it’s hard not to be inspired. It makes me proud to call Beekman my home.”

Black Elks Host Dinner-Dance Fundraiser SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Frederick Allen Lodge #609 of the Improved Benevolent Order of Elks of the World, informally known as the “Black Elks,” will hold their annual Dinner-Dance on Friday, June 3, from 7:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., at the Knights of Columbus on Pine Road in Saratoga Springs.

The purpose of the DinnerDance is to raise funds for the scholarship provided by the Lodge to the Saratoga Springs High School student of color with the highest grade point average. Featured speaker of the evening will be Congressman Paul Tonko. Also in attendance will be Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner and Saratoga Springs Mayor Joanne Yepsen. The dinner will be catered by Mama Mia’s Restaurant, with dance music provided by D.J. Dragonnette and Garland Nelson.

The I.B.P.O.E. of W. was founded in Ohio in 1898. The Saratoga Springs affiliate was established in 1925 and named after D.P.W. worker Frederick Allen, whose descendants still live in the area today. The women’s support organization, the Mary A. Carter Temple #362, was founded in the same year. Since 1966 the Lodge has been located at 69 Beekman Street. It has played an important role in the history of Saratoga Springs over the past century, and in its heyday organized a youth drum and bugle

corps and held parades through town and down Beekman Street.

A number of old photographs of the Lodge and the Beekman Street parades are part of the Bolster Collection.

The Lodge is dedicated to community service, with emphasis on youth, education, and providing for the needy. The Lodge also holds a popular Jazz BBQ in September and the Temple organizes a colorful July Fashion Show.

The Dinner-Dance is a wonderful opportunity for persons of every background to dine, dance, socialize and celebrate the accomplishments and values of the Frederick Allen Lodge.

801 Supper Club Returns to the Mansion Inn with All New Lineup ROCK CITY FALLS — If you have never been to or stayed at the Mansion Inn, this summer is definitely the time to do so! All Outdoors Finding Time

by Tim Blodgett Saratoga TODAY May is three weeks gone already and I’m so far behind, I have to revise my outdoor plans before I’ve had a chance to get started. My mother warned me about the fleetness of time when I was younger (not “young” because would imply that I’m old and I’m too young to be old) and time seemed to stretch to infinity.

The truth is that time does indeed stretch on to infinity, but I won’t, and therein is the problem. There are so many ways to enjoy being outdoors that it can be hard to decide what to do. The trick is to not let indecision bring you to a standstill. I sometimes struggle with this problem and I know I’m not the only one.

It is the easiest thing in the world to not do something because it’s too late or too early or too cold or too hot or too dark or it’s going to rain or it’s time for dinner or you only have an hour or there’s no one to go with and then, when you finally decide what you want to do, you then conclude that it was a long day, so you sit down on the couch, put your feet up and make like a buzz saw. Sound familiar? I won’t judge you because that has been me more times than I want to admit.

They say that the first step to getting well is acknowledging that you have a problem. The next step is doing something about it!

The busy quotient of May and June can be astronomically high, especially if you have school age children or are involved in school aged children’s events. There always seems to be a practice or a game or an assembly that needs attending. I think that it’s great that the kids have so many activities to take part in, but there’s a lot of stress involved. If that sounds like your life, try to identify the spaces in between when you can engage in a less competitive pursuit. You may have to drag the kids kicking and screaming away from their electronic distractions but taking just an hour to go to walk trails in the Wilton Preserve

or Yaddo will open their eyes to a different experience. There are many other places I think of as “pocket parks” that you can spend as little as 15 minutes to explore and learn a little about this area and the people who lived here. One that comes to mind is the Orra Phelps Nature Preserve located on Parkhurst Road in the town of Wilton. This 18-acre gem was donated to the Saratoga Land Conservancy (Saratoga PLAN) by the niece of Dr. Orra Almira Phelps for the enjoyment of all nature lovers. Take a minute to search Dr. Orra Phelps online, I’m sure you will be impressed with her bio, and then take some time to visit this little slice of nature it’s only 10 minutes away!

If you have a little more time, visit Hudson River Crossing Park at Lock 5 of the Champlain Canal located on the Hudson River in Schuylerville. Take Rt. 29 east to Schuylerville and then turn left at the junction of Rts. 29 and 4/32.

You will find Lock 5 just a short piece down on the right. Don’t forget to bring your fishing poles with you because this is one of the most accessible shore fishing opportunities you will find.

You can walk the old canal, or the interpretative trail along the Hudson River. There is a large recreational area for the family to

enjoy where the kids can run until they're exhausted. You can take a short river cruise on a paddleboat or pass the time watching the river flow by.

The Saratoga Monument and Saratoga Battlefield are just minutes away from the Crossing if you want to learn more about the birth of our nation. What I’m getting at is that you don’t need to make an elaborate plan for outdoor fun.

The places I’ve mentioned and many more are right in your back yard waiting for you to visit when you have a few minutes.

Prime time for Fishing May is the month when fishermen dust off their equipment and head to their favorite fishing holes to test their skills against those of the fish. The nice weather and warmer water temperatures have made all species of fish more apt to take the bait you present to them. Pike season opened two weekends ago and they have been voraciously feeding as they recover from their spawning exertions. Pike and their close cousins – Pickerel, will eagerly take minnows swimming beneath bobbers or any flashy, minnow mimicking lure you choose to throw at them.

They strike viciously and fight like demons when hooked but take care when handling them.

For all their fight, they can be

easily harmed if you handle them carelessly and keep them out of the water for pictures. Also, keep your fingers out of their mouths or you will be easily harmed by their mouthful of sharp teeth.

Bass are biting well and as the water warms they will provide even more sport. The season for bass is currently in the “Catch and Release, Artificial Only” period.

This means that you can actively fish for them with lures and that you must release them immediately. Targeting them with live bait is prohibited until the third Saturday in June when the season opens fully.

Fishermen coming into the shop are reporting that trout have been biting well in the Kayderosss Creek from Kelly Park in Ballston Spa upstream through Rock City Falls. Bait and spinners have both been working well but I haven’t heard much from the fly fishermen. If you want to try fishing for some “River Monsters,” I’ve been getting reports from fishermen that channel catfish are biting well in the Hudson River. They bite better when most people are snoozing so a little planning is necessary for the best chance for success. The anglers I’ve talked to agree that midnight to 2 a.m. is consistently when the best bite occurs, but they can be caught at any time of the day. The most popular baits are night crawlers and chicken livers but live or cut bait also works well as does many of the commercially prepared baits. I know people who have caught then on chunks of hotdogs but that sounds like a waste of food to me.

Intensity vs. Bullying Horse Show Live!

by Damian Fantauzzi for Saratoga TODAY There has been a lot of noise and concern lately about bullying. To me it’s a topic that is not going away, probably forever.

Locally, we have had some issues relating to coaches who have, to some degree, been accused of bullying some members of the team they’re coaching.

So I have been doing research relating to this, and I did a recent article about “Old School” coaches and “New School” coaching. As an athlete I’ve experienced both types of coaching styles, and as a coach I have witnessed some of the “old school” philosophies that havebeen equated with near abuse, resulting in bullying.

To begin, there is a misunderstanding that I feel needs to be considered, a personality trait that can be prevalent with a particular ego-type that might be connected to certain coaches. A good example would be my friend and mentor, Bobby Knight. Long ago, many accused him as being abusive to some of his players. Here comes the fine line. Coach Knight has been accused by very few of his actual past players as abusive, some even feel he was the reason for their success in life beyond the basketball court. I know of former Hoosiers who claim that their former coach was like a second father, a strict one at that.

Many of his critics misconstrue his intensity with rage, and see it as abusiveness.

When Coach Knight recruited players he looked for the student-athlete who was disciplined and was able to follow directions with the ability to

perform to his system. To top it off, this was Division 1 basketball, not scholastic athletics.

I know many high school coaches who ride on the train of “copy-that-coaching-personality;” the wanna-be coach that copies Knight, Pitino, Krzyzewski, Boeheim, or whomever else. But, many of the things and styles used by some of these coaches aren’t going to work at the scholastic levels.

When I coached basketball, I was intense, especially during the games, but my intensity was mine, not a copy of any famously known “big-time” coach. The truth is, I never abused my position as a head basketball coach by trying to overpower my players. Never did I pick out an individual and yell at her/him, I never bullied my kids, they knew what I expected from them and they pretty much got what they expected from me - my love for them, and sometimes it was tough love.

Coaches can be bullies though; it’s a fine line to tread. A coach may think he/she is being motivational when they make players “sweat for the cause” in training, or even over drill them on technique and tactics. But a coach needs to know her/his athletes and understand what one player thrives on another may recoil against. If the coach lambastes someone for failing to follow instructions, it could leave a lasting emotional scar without the coach even realizing. Indeed, the whole team could be affected by an over-authoritarian coaching style.

Harassment and bullying are dangerous bedfellows, kids aren’t as tough as they used to be, and times are different today.

Also, parents are more sensitive than they used to be, and I feel it’s because they’re more involved with their child’s extracurricular activities than my generation’s moms and dads. Along with that different world is the environment of using technology in scholastic and college sports, where players who believe they have been abused can tweet about it.

“In the old days, football coaches hit players over the head with a clipboard, but you don’t see that anymore,” said Dan

Gould, director of the Institute for the Study of Youth Sports at Michigan State University. But coaching experts like Gould say that there is no excuse for abusive coaching - physically or psychologically - especially with bullying tactics that get “personal” and “demeaning.” Bullying involves a real or perceived imbalance of power, where the one with power attacks the less powerful or powerless. This, according to Matt Davidson, from an article written for “Excellence and Ethics” on April 5, 2013.

Here’s more proof that a good coach is like a good parent: your kids don’t always like you; they often resent your standards and expectation. But if you do it the right way, for the right reasons, years later they understand and appreciate you‹- and usually adopt your standards and values.

But a bad coach is like a bad parent: they leave pain, scars, and resentment that lasts a lifetime.

It’s a fine line between motivation and abuse. It’s also a slippery slope, for coaches, so they must be careful and get the right style for the motivation of each child. The sum of that fine line can add up to ridicule, embarrassing or demeaning players, making verbal attacks personal, exhibiting intimidation with threatening, and/or aggressive confrontational styles with players, humiliating players publicly or privately, engaging in emotional games, like not talking to a player, or having them sit away from the team after a bad performance, grabbing, pushing, shoving or hitting players – all making it clear to players that there is no way out or around the coach. As a spectator, I have observed these sinful aspects from opposing coaches and it is painful to watch.

But praise is a way of saying, “Thank you for all you have done.” Truly, magical to hear particularly from those we hold in high esteem, or in the position of mentoring, like a coach.

Connecting to people through positive encouragement creates an exceptionally strong foundation from which to grow, and the coach-athlete relationship is an ever-growing process that can be life changing for the athlete.

Bikeatoga and the Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) Announce Bike to Work Challenge Bike to Work Challenge teams are forming.

Bike to Work Day. Bikeatoga and CDTC are sponsoring the eighth annual Bike to Work Challenge. Companies and organizations with locations in Saratoga County are encouraged to form teams to compete for the following trophies: • Gear Head – highest percent participation for organizations with more than 20 employees • Chrome Crank – highest percent participation for organizations with 20 or fewer employees • Steer Head – largest number of riders • Golden Fork – longest bike commute Last year, several hundred Saratoga County residents participated in the Bike to Work Challenge and left their cars at home for a day. Many riders reported that this event helped make biking to work a fun and healthy habit.

On Friday, May 20 there will be a free breakfast served at The Arts Center, located on the corner of Broadway and Spring Street in Saratoga Springs from 6:30 – 9 a.m. for all bike riders.

Tickets On Sale For ACTT Naturally’s Third Anniversary Party

ACTT Naturally, a nonprofit organization that works with former Thoroughbred racehorses connecting them with people in need through Equine Facilitated Learning Programs, will celebrate its third anniversary on Monday, May 23 at 5 p.m. at Fifty South in Ballston Spa. ACTT Naturally is based at Long Shadows Farm in Cambridge, NY and is run by its founder, Valerie Buck and her staff of volunteers.

Fifty South is located on Rt. 50 between Saratoga Springs and Ballston Spa at 2128 Doubleday Avenue, Fifty South is owned and operated by renowned chef Kim Klopstock and specializes in fresh, gluten-free farm-to-table cuisine.

For the anniversary party, Fifty South will have live music, a silent auction and a 50/50 raffle.

Paul Archambauld Crosses Finish Line First in Men’s Division

Jockey Wayne D. Wright and racehorse Tom Ochiltree elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame by Historic Review Committee SARATOGA SPRINGS — Jockey Wayne D. Wright, who won the Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes in separate years and was America’s leading rider in 1934 and 1936, and the 19th century racehorse Tom Ochiltree, winner of the 1875 Preakness Stakes and numerous prestigious handicap events, have been elected to the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame by the Museum’s Historic Review

Committee.

Wright and Tom Ochiltree join contemporary selections Rachel Alexandra, Zenyatta, Ramon Dominguez and Steve Asmussen in the Hall of Fame Class of 2016. The Pillars of the Turf selections will be announced later this month.

The induction ceremony takes place Friday, August 12 at 10:30 a.m. at the Fasig-Tipton sales pavilion.

Along with his wins in the Triple Crown races, Wright

won three races aboard Triple Crown winner War Admiral, including the Whitney Handicap and Jockey Club Gold Cup. He also won the Dwyer and Arlington Classic with Triple Crown winner Omaha. He rode a third Hall of Famer, Eight Thirty, to victory in the 1938 Flash Stakes.

Wright also won the Travers Stakes (1937), Saratoga Cup (1935) and Saratoga Special (1945).

Dana Bush Set the Pace in the Woman’s Division

Burnt Hills’ Cook and Michaelson Excel in Philly PHILADELPHIA — Burnt Hills High School Junior, Quentin Cook (age 17) and Burnt Hills eighth grader, Alexa Michaelson (13) were standouts for the Jason Morris Judo Center at the 29th annual Liberty Bell Classic in Philadelphia weekend of April 30- May 1.

Cook was a double gold medalist - first winning the men’s 66kg weight class, going 4-0 and collecting the $250 first prize, then went 3-0 to also win the 66kg under21 division. Michaelson captured the

13-14yrs. 48kg title then picked up a silver medal in the 15-16yrs.

48kg category. Eric Skylar (19) also was a double medalist taking a gold in the 90kg under21 division then won a silver in the men’s 90kg weight class. Burnt Hills Junior Mitch Paltiel (16) was the fourth JMJC double medalist, winning bronze medals in the 15-16yrs. 81kg category and the 81kg under21 division. Burnt Hills Junior, Ruslan “Zurg” Izerkin (16) also won a silver medal in the 15-16yrs. 66kg weight class.
