SARATOGA SPRINGS — A new eatery, albeit one known to Saratogians for a decade, has targeted the location formerly housing Lillian’s restaurant at 408 Broadway.

Plans call for the two-story development of a new Cantina restaurant at the vacant space bordered by The Washington building to the north and Gardner Lane to the south.

First floor designs show a kitchen, bar and dining area with a staircase that leads to the

second floor which features a catering kitchen and approximately 2,700 square feet of “open seating,” indicating an event space. Changes include new lighting and signage, windows installed along Gardner Lane alley, and upgrades to the front exterior façade.

Lillian’s restaurant closed on Jan. 1, 2016 after more than 40 years on Broadway. Two months later owner Ray Morris sold the building to 408 Broadway Realty LLC for $2.45 million. The buyer, reported the Albany Business Review in 2016, was technology See Lillian’s pg. 12

Saratoga Festival of Trees

T

he holiday season is often challenging for individuals and families living in the tri-county region. Many are finding it difficult to get and keep jobs that pay enough to meet their basic needs. They are having trouble putting nutritious food on their tables, locating affordable and stable housing and securing adequate health care for themselves and their families.

The parallel challenge for each of us is to respond to the needs of the poor and vulnerable among us with compassion and generosity, and to advocate for systemic change that guarantees the basic necessities for all of our neighbors. In the midst of these trying times, we are aware of our own vulnerability as well as a heightened sensitivity to our deep interconnectedness.

It is then with a spirit of increased consciousness of the blessings in our lives, that we invite you to enjoy this creative holiday fantasy of delightfully decorated trees, wreaths, and centerpieces. Please stop at our raffle table, shop at the Holiday Store and join us for Breakfast with Santa on Saturday – a fun filled day of children’s activities in Santa’s Workshop. Returning again this year is the exquisite miniature Circus, Carnival and Train exhibit built over a 40-year period and presented by its owner, Don Erlenbusch. May the many magical moments of this year’s festival begin the Christmas season with much joy and anticipation of the many celebrations to come.

Behind the scenes, scores of dedicated volunteers spent countless hours planning and preparing for this event to be enjoyed by the entire community. For them we are most grateful. CATHOLIC CHARITIES

Catholic Charities of

Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties The Saratoga Festival of Trees is the largest fundraiser supporting the programs and services offered by Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington counties. Engaging the energies of the community, Catholic Charities has become a vital part of life for many individuals and families in the region. During 2016, over 5000 individuals were served by the agency. These services were provided by 41 staff. In addition, 295 volunteers gave 27,000 hours of their time.

COUNSELING – Individual, couple and family counseling and group support. This program provided mental health services to 1,401 individuals including 344 children 977 adults and 80 elderly.

MENTORING PROGRAM – Prevention / diversion program impacting youth’s academic, social, and emotional milieu. 97 youth and 88 of their family members took part in the program last year.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROJECT – Shelter, counseling, advocacy, education, 24-hour hotline services for victims of domestic violence and their children in Warren and Washington counties. In 2016, 544 adults and 67 children were served in its programs. 72 victims and their children were provided safe shelter. In addition, 1,600 individuals received education and prevention services.

Provided outreach and education to low income households in Warren County about the benefits of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. (SNAP) 150 households were assisted in applying for and receiving SNAP program benefits.

DONOVAN HOUSE – Ballston Spa community-based residential

were provided to 342 senior citizens.

group home program for adolescent boys provided 9 boys a cumulative 1,017 days of care last year.

MARY’S HAVEN – A community home for the dying serving

persons with irreversible illness, who are in the last three months of their lives and who no longer can remain safely in their homes. In 2016, we served 19 families and provided 537 bednights to the terminally ill.

NOEP (NUTRITION OUTREACH AND EDUCATION PROGRAM)

SERVICES TO THE ELDERLY

EMERGENCY SERVICES, primarily assistance with concrete basic needs, were provided to 1135 individuals in the tri-county region.

Programs and Services are available to anyone in Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties, always accompanied by information, referral and advocacy as needed. Individuals are never refused services because of their inability to pay.

Pick Up:

Pick up time for small trees, wreaths, and centerpieces is 3:30–4:30 p.m. on Sunday December 3. The Saratoga Festival of Trees cannot be responsible for items not picked up on time.

Tree Delivery:

Large trees will be delivered free of charge within a 10-mile radius of Saratoga Springs beginning Sunday, December 3. Upon purchase, please inform the sales table of the best time for delivery.

100 Years of Caring Beyond Belief

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany Celebrates its Centennial WRITTEN BY SISTER CHARLA COMMINS

How it All Began

Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany is celebrating our Centennial this year. Established in 1917 by a Special Act of the NYS Legislature, our work began welcoming orphans and assisting families with adoption. Over the years, services expanded from the initial foundation in the Capital District to services in all 14 counties of the Diocese.

Sister Serena, the Pioneer

In 1974, Sister Serena Branson, a Daughter of Charity, became the Executive Director, a position she held until 1990. She was the first woman to lead a Catholic Charities organization in the country. She came to the Diocese after many years of service in New York City where she was instrumental in establishing the first residential treatment center in the U. S., and in Philadelphia, where she started a treatment-oriented facility to house programs for multi-challenged children.

When Sister Serena took over the leadership of Catholic Charities, there were five agencies in three counties with an annual budget of $500,000. When she retired 16 years later, there were 28 agencies in all 14 counties of the Diocese with an annual budget of over $30 million.

She was renowned for her ability to bring

the poor, diocesan officials, and politicians to the same table to find solutions to the problems inherent in living in poverty.

It became a standing joke among those who worked with her that if she went to a community official, she’d always win their hearts, gaining the resources for a project that would help those in need. It was almost impossible to say “no” to this charismatic leader.

At the time of her death, then Bishop Howard Hubbard said, “She was a pioneer in child care and a real leader, not just in our Diocese, but nationally. Sister Serena had an incredible sense of vision about how to fulfill the social justice and the social service dimension of the Church’s life, and she made that vision come alive in our Diocese.”

Sister Maureen, the Advocate Sister Maureen Joyce, RSM, assumed the position of CEO in 1990 when Sister Serena retired. In her 20 years of leadership, she exemplified the same compassion, vision, and love for the poor that her predecessor modeled. She founded Community Maternity Services, an agency serving pregnant and parenting adolescents and was a pioneer serving those living with HIV/AIDS, particularly the “border babies” infected and languishing in hospitals without parents or homes to care for them.

Sister Maureen showed her generosity of spirit to those in need, wherever they were.

She led hundreds of Catholic Charities staff and other volunteers from throughout the Diocese to New York City to aid victims of the 9/11 attacks. And, in that same spirit,

responded to the needs of those affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Sister Maureen also played an important role in establishing a public policy education network that addressed political responsibility and advocacy for the poor, a health alliance partnering Catholic Charities with other Diocesan entities, and a senior housing initiative providing a full continuum of care. Working diligently to find solutions for the most vulnerable among us, her untimely death in 2010 was a great loss for her Catholic Charities family and the many she served so well.

Vince Colonno, today’s Leader Following Sister Maureen’s death, a team led by Sister Charla Commins, CSJ, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Saratoga, Warren and Washington Counties (CCSWW), assumed leadership until Vincent Colonno was named CEO in 2011.

Vince has served as Commissioner of Aging as well as Commissioner of Social Services, both in Albany County. As CEO, Vince is streamlining human and community services across the Catholic Charities system while ever conscious of responding to new and emerging needs.

With God’s help and the energies of the communities in which we serve, Catholic Charities will continue to serve those in need, advocate for justice in societal structures and call all people of good will to join in these efforts - for the next hundred years and beyond.

100 Years of Catholic Charities 1917 – Bishop Thomas Cusack establishes the organization, including Masterson Child Development Center and Albany Catholic Family and Community Services. Work begins with welcoming orphans and assisting families with adoption.

1925 – The growing agency is renamed Catholic Charities 1926 – Catholic Charities becomes a critical avenue

of support for those in our community affected by the difficulties of the Depression and WWII.

1950 – Following WWII, Catholic Charities focuses on family-related programs including foster care, adoption, and family counseling services.

1972 – The mission of Catholic Charities is refined, serving as social justice advocates addressing the causes of poverty and dysfunction in society.

1974 – Sister Serena Branson, the first women in

the U.S. to head a Catholic Charities agency, expands services throughout the Dioceses.

1975 – Saratoga County Agency opens with Michael Nardolillo as Executive Director

1980 – Washington and Warren County Agencies open

1988 – Sister Charla Commins is appointed Executive Director of the Saratoga County agency

1995 – The Saratoga County agency hosts the first annual Saratoga Festival of Trees

1997 – Saratoga, Warren, and Washington agencies merge 2003 – Mary’s Haven opens, a partnership of Saratoga, Warren, and Washington Counties Catholic Charities and Community Hospice 2017 – Catholic Charities celebrates 100 years of Caring Beyond Believe

Medallions of Service

As part of the Centennial celebration, one hundred Centennial Medallions are being awarded to outstanding individuals for exemplifying meritorious service on behalf of the mission of Catholic Charities. Our community’s agency nominated the following persons to receive this honor for their outstanding commitments.

Though agencies were limited in our nominations, be assured there are many others, present and past, deserving of this honor.

Robert Flynn

was President of the Board of Directors of Catholic Charities of Warren and Washington Counties in the 1990s when the process to discern merging that agency with the Saratoga County agency began. His leadership skills and wisdom facilitated the Board’s recognition of the need to maximize resources for the benefit of both agencies. His astute articulation of the positive outcomes of merging, while not dismissing the challenges that change brings, reassured the concerns of both Boards. Bob remained on the merged Board for many years and subsequently served on the Catholic Charities Board of Trustees in Albany, lending his fiscal expertise and strong commitment to our mission.

Michael Nardolillo

is legendary in the Catholic Charities network. As the long-time director of Trinity Institute in Albany, he was on the forefront of the South End’s transformation and subsequent displacement of families, with the coming of the South Mall. He was the founding Executive Director of Catholic Charities in Saratoga County in 1975 and his experience and wisdom set the stage for successful growth and credibility for the years to follow. Following the premature and sudden death of his wife, Mike returned to Albany to be nearer to his six children. He then became the Executive Director of the Albany County Catholic Charities agency. Mike’s astute social work and political skills, infused with a faith-filled commitment to mission, were a model to the many he mentored in the Catholic Charities system.

J. Thomas Roohan

has been a long-time supporter of Catholic Charities.

He and his mother donated the land to enable the

agency to build Mary’s Haven, the area’s first Community Home for the dying. Tom single-handedly spearheaded the building of Mary’s Haven by engaging his many friends in the building community to contribute their time, talent, and treasure to design, build, and furnish this beautiful setting to care for the terminally ill in their most fragile stage of life. Mary’s Haven opened in 2003 with no cost to Catholic Charities and $100,000 in the bank and continues to serve the terminally ill and their families.

Additionally, large numbers of Tom’s staff at Roohan Realty are very involved with the Festival of Trees, the agency’s largest fundraiser, chairing committees, fundraising, finding sponsors, managing the many events involved, and more.

Tom has been generous financially as well as assisting with building issues in our Administrative office building. He is our Saratoga “go to guy” on many levels.

Sister Lauren VanDermark, CSJ

was a founding staff member when Catholic Charities came to Saratoga County in 1975. A skilled social worker, she specialized in gerontology and her work with the isolated, frail elderly became legendary. Her easy-going and calm

demeanor engaged others quickly. The most difficult and challenging situations often resulted in favorable solutions for her clients. Her expertise for assisting persons “to age in place” allowed hundreds to live their final years with dignity and grace.

Sister Lauren was also a member of the Diocesan Commission on Aging which she chaired for several years. After 25 years with Catholic Charities, she was called to leadership in her religious community, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet.

Michael Toohey, ESQ served on the Board of Directors of CCSWW for more than 15 years. His knowledge of the community, coupled with a penchant for critical thinking and a great sense of humor enlivened Board meetings and indirectly mentored newer members. When Mary’s Haven was being developed, he provided pro bono legal expertise in dealing with zoning, planning, and more. Mike and his wife Linda have been extremely generous to the agency, supporting program needs and agency events as well. Mike is often the eloquent voice of the Catholic Charities mission in the many professional and social circles he navigates. His passion and commitment embody the true meaning of giving back to one’s community.

and related family foundations will donate 7.5 million to local charities in 2017. They also sponsor the well-known Holiday Match Program, where Stewart’s matches all customer donations made in their shops from Thanksgiving through Christmas day. Stewart’s Holiday Match customers have helped the company contribute over 24 million to thousands of organizations since 1986. Many Catholic Charites agencies across the Diocese have benefitted from funding through the Holiday program. Locally, Stewart’s family foundation funding has also benefitted Mary’s Haven and many of the company’s vendors are

Getting There/ Parking:

Broadway will close once again from 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. from the Route 50 arterial to the Spring Street intersection for the festivities.

CDTA, a festival Gold Sponsor, is running FREE shuttle buses every 20 minutes from the Empire State College parking lot at 111 West Avenue on Saratoga Springs’ west side. You can also get the shuttle at the Silver Sponsor, NYRA Oklahoma track (just off Exit 14 of I-87) and the Weible Avenue Skating Rink parking lots on the east side of Saratoga Springs. The shuttles run from 4:30 to 10:00 p.m.

Octavo Singers at Victorian Streetwalk

T

Thirty members of the Octavo Singers will make their annual appearance as part of the Victorian Streetwalk, November 30 on the staircase in the lobby of the newly opened Adelphi Hotel. But instead of doing the usual holiday tunes, music director Curtis Funk did some research and found songs that were Victorian Era favorites.

“These are light, beautiful carols that have beautiful harmonies and are very listenable,” Funk said. “However, these songs are more complex than the usual Christmas carols. These don’t have predictable harmonies, but have more counterpoint or even a Renaissance polyphony, in that the lines of the four-part harmony move in different rhythms or direction.”

Among the songs they’ll perform are “Ding Dong Merrily on High,” the “Wassail Song,” and the “Boar’s Head Carol,” which dates from the 1300s when it was traditional at Cambridge University to slaughter a boar and then have a huge feast. Handel’s “Joy to the World” and a few other traditional songs will also be performed.

For people who aren’t familiar with the Octavo Singers, they’re the vocal group that sings Handel’s “Messiah” every year at Union College’s Memorial Chapel. This year the group numbers 105 singers and will perform at 7:30 p.m. December 9.

Compared to an undertaking as the Handel, Funk said, singing Victorian holiday songs is especially refreshing for his singers.

“These are fun - in that the songs take only about a minute and a half to sing vs. singing arias that last fifty minutes - and they’re not in Latin,” he said. “And with only 30 singers, it gives them a chance to break out to blend differently and to hear themselves.”

There will be two thirty-five minutes sets: one at 7 p.m. and one at 8 p.m.

Happy The first weekend in December my extended Holidays family and I meet up and from Saratoga march through the woods in search of the perfect TODAY Christmas tree. We all takes turns sawing it until it falls onto the snow. Our family dog even joins in and helps us tow it through the maze of tress and to our car.

- Casey Dolan, Mom of 2 -Schuylerville We love going up to Queensbury for the Twicwood Christmas lights. We sit in the car and listen to the music and lights choreographed to match.

- Miranda Farrell -Ballston Spa When our boys were young we always went to my mother and father’s house for Christmas and Thanksgiving dinner. We needed a tradition of our own so we started decorating the tree the Friday after Thanksgiving. We wanted to make a special dinner so we decided lobster would be a great treat and not like anything we normally eat on the holidays. We called our new tradition “Lobster and Lights!”

- Marybeth Leslie -Ballston Spa Wigilia is our Christmas Eve celebration. We all make pierogis together during the day and prepare all of the food for our Christmas Eve feast. This is a meatless meal and we must have 12 dishes of food. We set the table with an extra place setting in the event there is a person in need of food.

Before our meal we read the Christmas passage in the Bible and share oplatek (wafers) and give well wishes to each other. We then eat together. After dinner, we have dessert and open our Christmas presents. At midnight we go to Christmas Mass. This entire tradition is my favorite day of the year!! - Eva Millard, Mom of 1 -Saratoga Springs Reading the story of the first Christmas from the Bible and putting on our own little family Christmas pageant, complete with costumes and a baby doll Jesus, on Christmas Eve. - Challae Brooks -Ballston Spa Letting the kids help cook for our holiday meals. On Christmas Eve we would stay in our jammies all day and have a warm day at home full of cooking, watching movies and making cookies, then at night, we’d go around the neighborhood and play the "mine" game, picking out lights.

While many Northern folk try to “get through” the colder months, Eddie & Leann Fyvie have always embraced them. After meeting at Gaffney’s in May of 2008 the couple made Lake Placid their “special place” and took frequent trips to the quaint town nestled between high peaks. Famous for being home to the arena that housed the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey team’s win over the Soviet Union, Lake Placid is a haven for winter sports enthusiasts. The couple loves the town so much that it became the backdrop for their engagement and Winter Wonderland wedding at the Lake Placid Lodge in 2014 on 12/13/14…

Mason, who was born at Saratoga Hospital weighing 9lbs 4 oz, is a butterball of cuteness. Smiling and adorable he donned his Christmas best for me to take his very first Christmas photos! Needless to say he rocked the entire session!

What makes this time of year so special are all of those family traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation that bring people together. For me, my favorite memory is going to the Christmas Eve candlelight service with my maternal Grandparents. There was nothing like all the voices in the congregation singing carols while basking in the warm candlelight.

Leann and Eddie never miss a chance to watch “A Christmas Story” on TV. While they’re not planning to make baby Mason don Ralphie’s famed bunny suit from the movie… it will be playing in the background as they complete all their family Christmas firsts this year. Eddie is as smitten with baby Mason as Leann is and you can see it in his smile that he can’t wait to make both Leann and Mason happy this Holiday season.

Leann and her family have celebrated Christmas in Lake Placid for the last several years and they are so excited to share Lake Placid with Mason. “I love being with my family, and Christmas gives us so many reasons to be together” she said.

Seeing Christmas through the eyes of a child brings all the magic and wonder of the season to life. “Kids are so happy and excited this time of year and there is NOTHING more amazing than seeing a happy smiling child.” She cannot wait to watch Mason as they bake the family’s traditional chocolate chip cookies together for the first time.

As a child, Leann and her family would pack their car full and head off to church services on Christmas Eve. After, they would meander through town to gaze at all the Christmas lights. “Every year we would get up in the middle of the night and change the clocks ahead, so at 4 AM it would be 7 AM on the clock, that way we could open everything earlier.” Although, something tells me that her Mother knew all along–it still remains one of Leann’s favorite memories. Although they don’t purchase too many gifts, they cannot wait to stay up late wrapping all of Mason’s special presents.

Nothing is more fun than putting on the Santa “hat” on Christmas Eve for a parent!

This has always been Leann’s favorite time of year. “Everywhere you go people are happy and excited. Every place is lively and beautified with lights, decorations, and trees. It’s so nice to see people

n 2017, First Night Saratoga was voted to be the best annual event in the region! As one of the oldest and largest celebrations of its kind in the country, First Night Saratoga truly is the most affordable, accessible, safe and exciting way to spend New Year's Eve in the region. On Sunday, December 31st join over 15,000 revelers as Saratoga Arts’ hosts over seventy regional and touring performing groups in thirty venues throughout Historic Downtown Saratoga Springs. Starting with the 5k road race at Skidmore College at 5:30pm, culminating with the fireworks in Congress Park at midnight and packed full of live music, dance, comedy and magic in between, this event will be a highlight of your outgoing year.

The theme for First Night Saratoga 2018 is Light Up the Night and we have plenty of events lined-up that will let our city shine this New Years’ Eve. The Children’s Museum at Saratoga will kick off the evening by working with kids to create time capsules and a lantern to light the night ahead.

At the Lake Avenue School, families can enjoy the StarLab Planetarium, feats of bubble ingenuity by Jeff Boyer, the spectacular theater of the award-winning Broken Box Mime Troupe, reptiles, raptors and more!

The mainstage at the Saratoga City Center will feature our favorite mind-art acts, including Boston-based Scott Jameson whose juggling and balancing skills are unmatched. Watch as he pulls umbrellas out of thin-air and makes foam balls appear

the end of the evening, Sawyer Fredericks, the 2015 winner of “The Voice”, returns from his national tour to perform for his local fans! In addition to the WEXT stage, Saratoga Arts is proud to showcase a number of up and coming artists this year. In the Visitor Center, Brendan Eprile and Ashley Sofia will enthrall the audience with a slice of acoustic funk; in the Adirondack Trust Bank Angelina Valente and Katie Louise will offer up original songs backed by keyboard, and fiddle player Seina Shirakura and singer/songwriter Maddy Hicks will serenade the First Night throngs from the storefront window of Lifestyles of Saratoga. All these young artists have promising careers ahead of them, so make sure to stop by to say you heard them when!

Join Will Shakespeare in Temple Sinai for adventures full of merriment, sword fights, mistaken identities, star-crossed lovers, shipwrecks, musical numbers - and being chased by a bear - all in under 40 minutes! Jump on stage as a performer or sit back and enjoy the fun.

This New Years’ Eve is time to get moving! At the Military Museum the hottest local swing group, NitroJive, will let you showcase those dips and twirls and the popular country music DJ, Kevin Richards, will host a line-dancing party appropriate for all levels. Come to hear the music, watch the fun, or learn a few moves yourself- no partner necessary! Looking for something less structured? Check out the St. Peter’s Parish Center to move to the funk grooves of Collette & the Mudcats and the reggae of Robanic with the Caribbean Sound.
