THE WRITING ON THE WALL

Saratoga Signature Interiors The Writing on the Wall

It’s clear to see that many small businesses

are struggling to stay open despite this year’s devastating hit to the local economy.

“We closed our doors for three months and frankly, we were scared to death,” said Nancy Smith, owner of Saratoga Signature Interiors. While her staff was furloughed this spring, Smith continued to go into work, staying busy sorting fabrics, cleaning, checking the mail, and answering the phones. Because people were staying at home more, they were thinking about redesigning their interior spaces, which also kept her busy, but during this time, it was the sales of one of their most popular items that really allowed them to weather the storm.

Saratoga’s Signature Statue

Nothing says “Saratoga” like a custom-painted lawn jockey. Selling approximately 25 to 30 lawn jockeys to people around the country, they spelled survival for Saratoga Signature Interiors this year. “Honest to goodness, we would not have made it without that,” said Smith. Hand-painted by designer Dan Czech, in your choice of colors, these statues are popular not only among horse enthusiasts but serve as other sporting team mascots and can be emblazoned with corporate logos, as well. “We put a lot of detail into them. Everything is custom and they’ve gone way beyond just racing colors,” said Czech. The flexibility, kindness, and generosity of their landlord, Tom Mina, was also instrumental in keeping them afloat during the most difficult times, added Smith.

Decked-Out in Delightful Decor

As soon as they were given the go-ahead this summer, Saratoga Signature Interiors reopened the doors to their 3,000 square foot showroom located at 82 Church St. in Saratoga Springs. Filled with furniture, window treatments, lamps, art, décor and accessories, they not only have the items but the know-how to give your home its own signature style. Now decked out for Halloween, soon their display windows will transition over to a Thanksgiving theme before going full-steam into the Christmas season. This year, they invite you to visit Toyland, take a peek into Santa’s workshop and marvel at the oversized toys. The windows help attract locals and welcome all those who are new to town to stop in, said Smith.

Reliably Local

Now in their 28th year, Saratoga Signature Interiors has earned a reputation for being a reliable local retailer.

“You have to be, to be in business as long as we have. We have the smarts to help people and know the pit falls. People love coming here because they can see the furniture, try it, sit on it. They know we keep updated on what people want now and can offer it to them,” said Smith. The current climate means that delivery times from their manufacturers are delayed, still running almost twice as long as they normally would be for custom orders, but people are patient and willing to wait for what they want, she said. Saratoga is a town that offers a lot of choices. “When I started, I was the only designer in town. People speak highly of us and keep coming back but Saratoga is filled with designers now, and there’s enough business for everyone,” she added.
